SYLLABUS FOR FALL 2005

Instructor: Dr. Betty Edelman

(972)883-4291, bedelman@utdallas.edu
GR 4.202C – Office hours – Monday 3:00pm to 4:00pm
TA: Elva Granado, GR 4.810, eag041000@utdallas.edu
Office hours – Monday and Wednesday 4:30pm to 5:30pm

Prerequisite: College Algebra MATH – 1300, or MATH – 1306, or MATH – 1314

Abstract: This course is designed to introduce students to basic statistical methods for the
design and analysis of psychology experiments. Subject areas include: measurement,
graphs, descriptive statistics (e.g., mean, median, mode, variance, standard deviation),
elementary probability, simple correlation and regression, distributions (e.g., normal, t,
Chi-square, F), and inferential statistics (e.g., hypothesis testing, criterion, sources of
error, power, effect size, and an introduction to analysis of variance and factorial
designs).

Course Requirements:
Required Materials
- Required textbook
Aron, A. & Aron, E. N. (2003), Statistics for Psychology, Third
Edition, Prentice Hall
- Required homework forms (see next page for directions)
- A simple pocket calculator.
Optional Materials
- Online study guide that accompanies text – www.prenhall.com/aron
- Copies of lecture transparencies are available (see next page)

Attendance is required for all classes. If tests are missed, no make-ups will be
provided unless you supply a medical certificate or other documentation for a
necessary absence. If you know ahead that you must be absent, supply a note in
advance and, if justified, necessary arrangements will be made. If you are absent
it is your responsibility to obtain class notes from one of your classmates. If a test
is missed, and the absence is not excused, the grade given will be 0. Homework
will be graded and assignments not turned in will also result in a grade of 0.
Homework must be turned in on time, on correct form, and stapled.

Research Exposure Credits: Because this is a core course you must complete 2
research exposure credits by November 29. Follow the instructions on the
research exposure credits form. If you do not complete this requirement on time
you will receive an incomplete (X) for the course. Your course grade will be
posted when you have met the requirement. If you have concerns or questions
about these credits contact Kent Mecklenburg (972) 883-2360 or
kentm@utdallas.edu
Evaluation: – All tests are open book and open notes

• 5 tests (70%)
• Homework assignments (20%) – must be turned in on time
• Attendance (10%)

The attendance grade is computed as the percent of classes attended. There are 28
classes. If you attend 26 classes (93% attendance) your attendance grade is 93.
Absences due to illness, sports participation, or other serious emergencies will be
excused if you supply a written note (or email) and documentation.

Homework must be done on correct form:

Homework forms may be downloaded from the following website
www.utdallas.edu/~bedelman/general.html
Select PSY2317, select homework for correct chapter and print the form.
Forms will be available in Word and PDF formats.
Put your name on each page and staple pages before turning in.

Alternatively you may purchase homework form copies at the copy center located
in the front of the UTD bookstore.

Copies of the transparencies used during the lectures are also available on the same
website for downloading or can be purchased at the copy center.

Grade Assignment Policy:

Grades will be assigned based on your numeric average computed from the three parts
listed above (tests, homework, and attendance).
• 93 – 100 = A
• 90 – 92 = A-
• 88 – 89 = B+
• 83 – 87 = B
• 80 – 82 = B-
• 78 – 79 = C+
• 73 – 77 = C
• 70 – 72 = C-
• 68 – 69 = D+
• 63 – 67 = D
• 60 – 62 = D-
• Below 60 = F

I do not provide extra credit work.
