Course Description
This course emphasizes the development of cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and
endurance, and flexibility. Activities will include: hi-low impact aerobics, step, circuits,
interval training, sports drills, kick-boxing, walking, etc., with muscular strength and endurance
activities and stretching. Intensity levels can be modified to accommodate all levels of fitness.

Course Objectives
1. The student should understand the general concepts of physical fitness.
2. The student should be able to figure minimum and maximum target heart rates,
approximate caloric needs and expenditures, and have a general knowledge of nutrition
as it applies to physical fitness.
3. The student should understand what constitutes aerobic and anaerobic activity and how
each type of training applies to physical fitness.
4. The student should understand how to maintain fitness through participation in various
activities.
5. The student should satisfactorily complete the fitness assessment tests and written
examinations.

General Course Outline


Weeks 1-3 Fitness assessments, introduction to various aerobic workouts, introduction to
fitness concepts and monitoring exercise heart rates
Weeks 4-6 Continuation of aerobic workouts, nutrition and weight management,
Mid-Term Exam
Weeks 7-10 Continuation of aerobic workouts
Weeks 11-12 Repeat fitness assessments, review for test, Final Exam

Evaluation Letter Grades


Attendance 50 points 97 - 100 = A 77 - 79 = C+
Mid Term Exam 20 points 93 - 96 = A 73 - 76 = C
Final Exam 30 points 90 - 92 = A- 70 - 72 = C-
Total Points 100 points 87 - 89 = B+ 67 - 69 = D+
83 - 86 = B 63 - 66 = D
80 - 82 = B- 60 - 62 = D-
Attendance and Participation
You will be allowed three (3) absences before your attendance grade is affected. For each
absence thereafter, five (5) points will be deducted for each absence. YOU WILL NOT BE
ALLOWED TO MAKE UP ABSENCES, SO USE YOUR THREE ABSENCES
CAREFULLY.

If you miss the Mid-Term Exam you must contact the instructor within one week of the exam
date in order to complete a make-up exam.

If you arrive more than fifteen minutes late to class it will count as a tardy. Two tardies will
result in one absence or a loss of five points (5 points) being deducted from your total grade. If
you arrive more than twenty minutes late to class, you will be counted absent.

If you attend class, you are expected to participate. Full credit (5 points) for each class will only
be given to those who attend and participate the entire class period. Lack of effort, enthusiasm,
or desire to improve will result in a deduction of points from your total grade.

Class Etiquette
You are expected to dress in appropriate workout attire in order to participate in the workout.
No street clothes, denim, boots, or sandals will be allowed. If proper attire is not worn, you will
not be allowed to participate and you will be marked absent from the class.

You will be expected to help with the 'set up' and 'take down' of equipment for certain workouts.

NO CELL PHONES IN USE DURING THE CLASS PERIOD.

Drop/Withdrawal Policy
If at any time you wish to drop this course, you must initiate the action yourself. The instructor
is not responsible for dropping the student, and if the student fails to withdraw from the class, the
instructor will assign a grade accordingly.

Exercise Precautions
You will be guided through an aerobic program that includes warm-up, cardiovascular activity,
muscular strength, muscular endurance, and how to properly execute the exercises involved.
However, there is an individual responsibility for following exercise precautions. If you have
refrained from regular physical activity for a long time, have recently had surgery, are forty or
more years of age, are obese, or have specific limitations, you are advised to consult with your
physician before starting this program.

Progress gradually and sensibly in your workouts. If you are unsure about a particular
discomfort or pain, please consult your physician. If you experience chest pains, palpitations,
excessive shortness of breath, or persistent light-headedness, stop exercising and consult with
your physician before you continue with your exercise program.
Syllabus Addendum
Each student in this course is expected to exercise independent scholarly thought,
expression and aptitude. This addendum to the course syllabus is provided to
assist you in developing and maintaining academic integrity while seeking
scholastic success.

General Comments:
• All academic exercises (including assignments, essays, laboratory experiments and reports,
examinations, etc.) require individual, independent work. Any exception(s) will be clearly
identified.
• Be sure your name or identifying number is on your paper.
• Complete and turn in academic exercises on time and in the required format ( hardcopy,
electronic, etc.).
• Retain confirmation of document delivery if submitted electronically.
• Retain all research notes and drafts until the project or assignment has been graded.
• Obtain written authorization from your instructor prior to submitting a portion of
academic work previously submitted for any academic exercise. ( This includes an individual
or group project submitted for another course or at another school.)

Essays and Significant Papers:


Be prepared
• To present periodic drafts of work in process
• To correctly and completely reference all sources of information using the citation format
prescribed
• To turn your completed assignment in timely and in the prescribed manner (electronic,
hardcopy, etc. )

Examinations:
Be prepared
• To leave all personal belonging at the front of the room or other designated location (this
includes cell phones, turned off of course, and beverage containers)
• To present your UTD Comet Card
• To remove your cap or hat
• To remove the batteries from any electronic device (e.g. calculator)
• To exchange blue books or bring them early as required
• To change seating
• To sign out when exiting the testing room
• To be escorted for lavatory use

All episodes of suspected scholastic dishonesty will be reported according to


University policy. Students who violate University rules on scholastic dishonesty
are subject to disciplinary penalties, including the possibility of failure in the
course and/or dismissal from the University. Since such dishonesty harms the
individual, all students and the University, policies on scholastic dishonesty will be
strictly enforced. Penalties that may be assessed for scholastic dishonesty may be
