Transformer Oil Cooler BETA and CETA

The Coiltech transformer oil cooler concept, type OFAF, including the products
BETA and CETA, have many benefits some of them listed below.

Pre-engineered with simple ordering key

Two size versions - type BETA and type CETA

Different sizes within each cooler type

Wide capacity range

High cooling capacity and compact design

Low sound level - different fan speeds

Low energy consumption

Horizontal or vertical installation design

Carefully cleaned inside by oil flushing

Different materials

Reliable computer program for correct selection

Short and precise delivery time

This brochure contains information on the technical description of both cooler types.

General
The BETA and CETA transformer oil coolers are of
OFAF type (Oil Forced, Air Forced) and are delivered
as fully factory-assembled units.
The difference between the two coolers concerns the
size. CETA is larger than BETA.
The cooler consists of a casing with a finned tube
heat exchanger with one to four fan units. The heat
exchanger is carefully cleaned inside by oil flushing.
The cooler is designed to withstand vibrations,
shocks, seismic forces and thermal movements.

Finned heat exchanger

Cooler with 3 fans

The finned heat

exchanger has
removable headers
made of anticorrosion coated
steel. Rubber Orings arranged
between the headers
and the tube plates
provide an effective
seal.

Removable header with sealed oil connection

The finned coil body is normally made of

aluminium, making it highly resistant
against corrosion. The continuous
arrangement of the coil fins and the
wide fin pitch provide a good resistance
against clogging.

Continuous fins

Plugged vent and drain connections are provided at

each header.
Vent / drain nipples

Before delivery from works, each cooler is carefully cleaned inside by transformer oil
flushing with on-line particle counter to ensure requirement of cleanliness for power
transformer application. The oil connections are sealed off and tightend during
shipment.

Fan unit

Fan unit

The fan unit has a direct driven axial fan. The

impeller blades are made of aluminium and
the hub is made of anti-corrosion coated
steel. The impeller is dynamically balanced.
The fan is driven by a totally enclosed, threephase, squirrel-cage, induction motor having
protection class IP55 and F-insulation. The
motor is delivered with open drain holes. The
fans are available for different speeds,
depending on the acoustic requirements.

Safety switch
Each motor is cabled to a lockable safety
switch for secure service. The switch has a
normally open auxiliary contact.

Casing

The casing of the heat exchanger is made of hot dipped galvanized steel. The fan
deck and fan ring is made of aluminium. It can on request be outside painted for
color matching (option).
The casing is provided with lifting holes as
well as brackets, in order to fit the cooler to
the transformer. The fan protection guard,
covering the fan outlet, can easily be
removed when inspection of the fan and the
motor is required.

Cooler with painted casing on pallet

Packing
The transformer coolers are
delivered bolted to a wooden
packing, but separate wooden
boxes can be arranged as an
option. A protective plastic
wrapping covers the fan inlets
and the motors. The oil
connections of the heat
exchanger are covered with
sheet metal protections.

Electric cabling
For an easy electric power supply connection, the fan motors can be cabled from
each safety switch to one common terminal box at the factory (option).
The connection box is made of
stainless steel and has a venting
membrane at the bottom. The cables
are of standard type FKTA-T (PVCinsulated and steel wire armoured)
and the terminal blocks are of make
Phoenix, "tropical safe".

Extra cables with

their terminal blocks
for connection of oil
circulation pump
motor and/or an oil
flow indicator can be
provided as well as
cable rail (option).

Oil pump
Transformer oil circulation pump type
VMOA can be supplied by Coiltech. The
pump has an integrated motor and is highly
efficient, cooled and lubricated by the
transformer oil, robust, reliable and
maintenance free. The sound level is low as
well. The pump comes in two different sizes
and with different flow rates.

Sizing and Selection

The BETA and CETA transformer oil coolers are available in a wide range of
combinations. We refer to our own advanced and accurate computer selection
program in order to select and size up the correct cooler. The result is verified and
confirmed by an independent heat test. The program generates a result print-out
and a dimensional drawing of the selected cooler.

Cooling capacity example

The below tables show some examples of cooling capacity for different coolers and
conditions but with same mean oil temperature rise and ambient temperature.
Depending on cooler size and oil flow rate, turbulator inserts might be used to get
better relation between oil tube velocity and oil pressure drop.
Both cooler types can be run with lower or higher oil flow rates than indicated. By
changing number of oil passes and/or using turbulator inserts or not, suitable oil
pressure drop is obtained. We refer to our computer selection program for detailed
and correct selection and data.
