Job purpose
To develop, co-ordinate and implement the Student Community Plan to enhance the
engagement within the University and with local community through collaborative
working with internal and external stakeholders.
To co-ordinate activity to promote social responsibility and good citizenship by
students living in both Halls of Residence accommodation and off campus and to
work with and empower students to maintain good relations within local
communities. To identify trends pertaining student civic responsibility that lead to
pro-active approaches and initiatives with partners across and outside of the
university
Roles & Responsibilities
To co-ordinate the development and implementation of the Student Community Plan
in collaboration with key internal and external stakeholders
To actively promote the values of being a responsible citizen to Kingston students
through innovative campaigns and community organising
living in the local
community (including halls of residence, headed tenancy and the private rented
sector) through the implementation of an induction programme and to offer
guidance on how to be a responsible and courteous neighbour inc. Education on
noise pollution, parking, garden maintenance, safety and security, recycling and
rubbish disposal etc.at all stages of the student lifecycle.
To work in conjunction with the Community Enquiries and Complaints Officer to
identify trends in local community issues. To collaboratively find innovative and
proactive solutions to those issues.

To identify sources of external funding and collaborations for student civic


responsibility projects
To continuously identify and create meaningful interactions and relationships with
students, professional services and faculty staff and community partners that will
increase collaborations, including during the Welcome period and at local
community events.
To promote civic responsibility throughout the student body and spread greater
understanding of issues arising on and off campus through liaison with the local
community including: RB Kingston-upon-Thames councillors and officials,

representatives of local community and resident groups and the Metropolitan Police
and to take part in local meetings/gatherings as necessary.
In partnership with students, to represent the University at local council, community
and resident meetings on student related issues in order to develop a stronger
sense of identity and social responsibility across and between the student and wider
community.
To organise events and initiatives that promote civic responsibility which are
considered to be beneficial to students, the University and the local community
To recruit, train, develop and supervise interns and student organisers working on
student civic responsibility projects and initiatives
To produce regular reports/management information data for the University in order
for trends in student civic responsibility to be recognised, analysed and where
necessary remedial action to be taken, in order to ensure a positive relationship
between students , the local community and the university is maintained and
strengthened.
To conduct research and gain feedback through various methods on Kingston
University and local community issues and trends. To undertake research across the
HE and community sector on civic responsibility initiatives.
Development
To take advantage of training and professional support as agreed with the University
To undertake regular training and continuing professional development in order to
keep abreast of changes and developments in the field of advising students and to
ensure compliance with professional competency frameworks;
General
To fully utilise student service online systems e.g. StudentHUB, in logging, managing
and tracking student enquiries
In conjunction with colleagues from Student Services Engagement & Enhancement
Group develop a series of student civic and community initiatives Kingston
University.
To promote and publicise the services and functions of Student Services throughout
the University.
To play a proactive role in all department-wide initiatives and developments to
enhance and improve the student experience.
To identify students who may be at risk of harming themselves or others and to
invoke emergency procedures or referrals where necessary, ensuring that duty of
care responsibilities are discharged at all times
To deal with all matters sensitively and discretely at all times abiding by relevant
confidentiality and data protection policies.
To represent Kingston University at regional and national events and professional
interest groups in order to influence local and national policy and decision making
regarding student support services in post 16 education
At all times to help maintain a safe working environment by attending training as
necessary and to carry out responsibilities with due regard to the University Equal
Opportunities and Health and Safety Policies
To undertake any other reasonable duties responsibilities as may be reasonably
expected as part of this role and in line with the grade

Knowledge & Qualifications
1. First Degree or equivalent
2. Postgraduate / professional qualification
3. Substantial knowledge of student community issues
within a higher education context
4. Substantial knowledge and practice of various aspects
of civic responsibility and community issues/ relations ,
and the needs of local communities
5. Experience of supervising teams of volunteers or paid
staff
6. Experience in student community relations, local
government or further/ higher education
7. Knowledge of current issues affecting further and higher
education and local authorities in line with government
