Pilgrim Road construction

plans presented at board
meeting
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
Signs of the pending reconstruction of Pilgrim Road
from near Park Boulevard to Megal Drive which will
occur from spring into fall next year are already present
in the village.
Tom Hoffman, village director of engineering services,
summarized the work that will be done as part of the project during a Dec. 1 presentation to the Village Board.
Hoffman noted that barrels have already started appearing along the road as utilities are relocating facilities prior
to construction. The project is scheduled to begin on April
21 and is slated to be completed by Nov. 25.
According to Hoffman, the project began initially as a
pavement replacement. However, as tax incremental
finance districts (TIFs) were approved nearby, new development generated by the TIFs will create additional traffic.
As a result, the focus changed to include capacity
upgrades, including added turn lanes and wider intersections.
Under the plans, a change will be made to the access
to Pilgrim Road for Wacker Neuson Corp. and HarleyDavidson. While Harley-Davidson currently has direct
access to Pilgrim Road, the plans call for having the HarleyDavidson and Wacker Neuson access be combined onto a
road called Megal Court, which will have access to Pilgrim
Road, with traffic on Megal Court being navigated through
the use of a roundabout. Hoffman noted that the roundabout was suggested by the companies.
With the change in the Harley-Davidson entrance, a

traffic signal on Megal Drive will be able to move more traffic.
In addition, a large detention basin will be added to
handle runoff from Pilgrim Road.
Further south, Falls Parkway will be improved so that it
will have two left turn lanes, one through lane and a right
lane. For southbound motorists seeking to turn onto southbound 41/45, dual left turn lanes will be added to dual
through lanes and a right turn lane.
Hoffman said that the grade of bridge will be raised
3.5 feet as part of the conversion of Hwy. 41/45 to an
interstate. In addition, Hoffman said the bridges will be a
little more decorative than they are now.
Concrete will be used for the road surface due to truck

Walsh Jewelers Chip in to Help Their Neighbors

Bud Walsh, of Walsh Jewelers in downtown
Menomonee Falls has found a creative way to
help families in need this Christmas. Beginning
in December, Walsh Jewelers is selling
Platinum colored cultured pearl earrings for
$5, and donating the entire amount, not just
the proceeds, to the Menomonee Falls Food
Pantry. My family and I are very grateful to
this community, which has allowed us to stay
in business for so long says Bud Walsh.
This is just a small way for us to be able to
help local families during this holiday season.
Every $100 donated to the pantry buys about
$1000 in food. It feels good to be able to help
make a difference. his wife Mary Pat adds.
Our supply of earrings is limited and I want
as many customers as possible to be able to
participate, so we have a limit of one pair of
earrings per person.

Local girl continues fight against

seizures, family in need of donations
BY NIKKI ACKERMAN
STAFF WRITER
In the three and a half years since
Hartford residents Brian and Nancy
Gehrung brought their daughter, Ava, into
their home from China, their lives have
been filled with lots of laughter and love.
She is sweet, happy, loving, funny,
described Nancy in an interview with the
Express News. She is a great kid who loves
to make people laugh.
The effervescent nature of the nine-anda-half-year-olda little person with the
same form of dwarfism as her adoptive
parentsmakes it especially hard for those
around her to watch her experience so
much pain from the near-constant seizures
that plague the girl.
She has experienced a lot of trauma in
her short life, said Nancy.
It was clear early on that Ava had neurological issues so soon after he adoption,
Nancy took her daughter for a CAT scan
that delivered devastating results.
Before we even got home from the
appointment, the doctors office had called
us, she said. Tests had revealed that Ava
had suffered a massive stroke at birth and
that had affected 75 percent of the left side
of her brain, and the Gehrungs were told
seizures would be a side effect.
A month later we saw her first seizure,
said Nancy. It was even worse than they
thought, she said, as a MEG scan that captured pictures of Avas seizures revealed
that the affected part of her brainthe
occipital lobewas continuously seizing.
In two and a half hours she had at least
200 seizures.
The Gehrungs decided surgery was the
best option and a year ago they attempted
a two-part process; however, Ava was only
able to make it through the first half of the
surgery due to an undiagnosed blood clotting disorder.
A second attempt at the surgery during
which doctors severed the part of her brain

that is seizing from the healthy areas was

made at Childrens Hospital Nov. 3.
The surgery itself went smoothly with
no complications, but the recovery has
been slow and painful, Nancy said. Im
guessing it will be about four to six months
before she is really back in action, and
hopefully there wont be any more surgeries
after this.
It has been a long journey for the family.
Married for six years, the Gehrungs
decided to adopt Ava after seeing her on
the Little People of America adoption website. Nancy already had two grown childrenCollin and Shannon OConnell, 21
and 19, respectivelybut wanted to start a
family with Brian.
They adopted Ava and we never
looked back, said Nancy.
Despite her strugglesemotionally and
psychologically Ava is about four years
oldthe girl brings much joy to the family
and has many gifts, her mother said.
Because the right side of Avas brain is
strong, she is extremely creative. She loves
to pick up odd things and make beautiful
art out of them, Nancy described. She is
a huge fan of Disney princesses and she
loves everyone in her family so much.
The surgery appears to have been a
success, which is exactly what the
Gehrungs wanted, but the medical bills
remain. Also, with Brian undergoing back
surgery and possibly missing up to six
months of work at the Menomonee Falls
Post Office, the familys finances will likely
be a struggle for the near future.
The community has been incredibly supportive through everything, Nancy said.
Family friends Bob Howe and GloriaJean Siegel-Howe held a fund raiser for
Avaat which more than $5,000 was
raisedat Trysting Place Pub in
Menomonee Falls in September.
It was so humbling for us, said Nancy.

traffic on the route, Hoffman said. He said
a decorative element of poured concrete
will be used for the crosswalks.
Also as part of the project, access for
Cleveland Avenue will be limited to a right
turn in, right turn out, eliminating left turn
access from the road.
Hoffman said there are four funding
sources for the project. Hoffman said the
state Department of Transportation will pay
for all costs from Cleveland Avenue to the
Harley-Davidson driveway. The agency will
also pay for improvements to Main Street.

through the surface transportation program
(STP) in which the DOT will pay 80 percent
and the village will pay 20 percent.
The village will pay all the cost of the
Megal Court construction. Hoffman said
that for that portion of the project, the village received a $205,000 transportation
enhancement assistance grant from the
state as part of the addition of 41 jobs
through the expansion of the Wacker
Neuson facility. If the jobs are maintained
for seven years, the grant will not have to
be repaid.
Hoffman added the village cost of the
project will be paid through the eighth TIF
district.

Commission supports two

additions for hospital
The Menomonee Falls Plan Commission
supported a change last week in the conditional use permit for Froedtert Health
Community Memorial Hospital for two
additions.
According to a staff report prepared for
the Dec. 2 commission meeting, Community
Memorial is proposing an addition on the
northeast side of its facility at W180
N8085 Town Hall Road that will serve as a
small clinic and will provide patient admission testing, waiting rooms and education.
The second addition will involve the expansion of the existing emergency room on the
southeast side of the building, which would
include a covered patient drop off and pick
up area and a small parking lot with handicap parking.
No one spoke at a public hearing on
the request and the request was supported
by the commission, with Village President
Randy Newman abstaining from voting.
The commission also supported a

request from Wacker Neuson Production

Americas LLC to amend the conditional use
permit to allow outdoor storage and testing
of machinery and equipment at N92
W15000 Anthony Ave. The company
requested the change to allow for testing
inside a company building and storing
between 100 and 150 skid steers outside.
The fully built skid steers would be on the
east side of a building, 450 feet from the
nearest residence and not visible from residences or from Pilgrim Road.
While village staff recommended that
outdoor activities at the site not exceeds 75
decibels at the property line (the sound of a
toilet flushing, according to the staff report),
the commission recommended the noise be
limited to 65 decibels at the property line.
Both items will go to the Village Board
for final consideration

It was wonderful, but weird to have people
giving us money. Through that event, the
parents were able to get Ava a motorized
wheelchair and now they are looking to
make ramp modifications to their home.
Nancy, who is not able to work as she
cares for her daughter, said any help is a
blessing.
Any donation is welcome and appreci-

ated, she said. There have been a lot of

expenses not covered by insurance.
Checks can be made out to Brian

The family also has a youcaring.com

wish to make a donation online. The name
of her fundraiser there is Friends of Ava

Yo Cool Frozen Yogurt

contributes to community
The following story was provided by Yo
Cool Frozen Yogurt in Menomonee Falls.
Yo Cool Frozen Yogurt, located at
N78 w14579 Appleton Ave. in
Menomonee Falls, is a self-serve dessert
store with 87 rotating frozen yogurt flavors, 47 toppings, 25 syrups and much,
much, more. At Yo Cool you build your
own dessert treat creation. Once your
masterpiece is finished you bring it to the
counter to have it weighed and youre on
your way. With exactly what you were
hungry for.
Yo Cool Frozen Yogurt was created to
give back to the community and state that
has provided founders with a positive life.
Its goal is to continuously pour all of
the profit back into the community and
promote positive change for everyone.
We want Yo Cool to be an interactive
force in the community, not just by donating, time and money, but to help the community grow and flourish in a healthy and
productive manner. Responsible citizenship is our favorite expression.
Besides donating money to charitable
causes Yo Cool has created a place for
children, families and friends to meet and
share ideas, get caught up and dream.
Years back families sat down to eat dinner
together and share their day. So many
families have limited time to get together.
We provide a place for families to get
together and talk, if just for a limited time.
Yo Cool does events with schools,
school sports teams, churches, community
centers, government organizations, charitable groups and more to help raise
money for good causes.
Yo Cool has only been open one year
and some of the places we have done
events for, and/or donated time and money
are: Shady Lane Elementary School, Falls
Baptist Church, Kiwanis Club, St. Pauls
Church, St. Marys Church, Childrens
Community Center, Girls Scouts, 4-H Club,
Boy Scouts, Ben Franklin School,
Menomonee Falls High School and North
Middle School, Blessings in a Backpack,
PGA Golf Organization, countless young
peoples sports teams, Waukesha Countys
Parents Who Host, Lose the Most,
YMCA, Riverside Elementary School, countless personal/charitable events for families
and children
Yo Cool is also committed to help fam-

ilies learn to eat healthy and learn about

good nutrition.
Yo Cool is hosting childrens events,
such as Santa Clause visits at no charge
and no purchase required so families have
time to gather and have fun together.
Bricks4Kiz is an event where kids learn to
build their own creations with LEGOS
bricks at Yo Cool Frozen Yogurt.
Jaid, a nine year old singer, songwriter, recording artist, has performed at
Yo Cool to the delight of kids of all ages.
One of the founders, Paul Armitage,
owner of Service Heat Treating in
Milwaukee, has given of himself entirely to
help the community financially, Yo Cool
would not be possible without Paul, and
with his time. No one could give more than
he continues to give to help the community
and state. Alex Hoffmann is co-founder
who manages the store, and is also a driving force to help provide positive change
in the community.
Alexs son, Shay, died of a drug overdose at the age of 21 on July 1, 2013. He
suffered from schizophrenia before he
died Alex has been speaking on addiction
and mental illness at Heroin Summits,
recovery centers, schools, churches, and
many other venues. He has met with
Governor Walker twice on the issues and
testified in Madison on addiction legislation. He has contributed to legislation on
addiction written by Rep. John Nygren.
He has met with Senator Alberta Darling,
the Department of Corrections, the
Department of Justice, the Center for
Healthy Minds, and many other groups
and agencies to curb that very serious epidemic in society and our community. He
has written a Ten Page White Paper on
addiction and mental illness which he continue to share with anyone who is interested. Alex is also a member of the Addiction
Resource Council of Waukesha County.
Yo Cool is about helping individuals,
families and children in our community in
an attempt to have a positive influence in
every way possible. In summary, Yo Cool
Frozen Yogurt is a vehicle to help anyone
in need, in our community and state. Our
motto is, Help Yourself at Yo Cool, by
helping us help others.
Rest assured, if you choose to eat
healthy at Yo Cool, you are also contributing to help your community and state.

The oldest John Deere Riding Lawn Equipment
dealer in southeast Wisconsin, family-owned and.
operated L&R Lawn Equipment & Repair, located
at 19915 W. Main St. (Hwy 74) in Lannon, features an extensive variety of outdoor power
equipment and repair services.
"We pride ourselves on personalized service
and are able to specialize in products for the residential and commercial lawn care, snow and
landscape market," said Steve Seder, son of owners, "We want to find our customers the right
equipment, for the right job, for the right price".
The business offers lawn and garden tractors
along with zero-turn and walk-behind mowers,
along with a full range of snow blowers. They also
carry a wide range of handheld equipment such
as trimmers, blowers and chainsaws, and sell all
the parts, accessories and service for their own as
well as other manufacturers products. In addition,
L&R sells portable and home standby generators,
power washers, landscape equipment, log splitters and battery powered equipment. They provide factory parts and service, including warranty

on most brands of outdoor power equipment.

Along with John Deere, the company's manufacturers include Toro, Husqvarna, Exrnark,
Generac and Briggs. They are authorized and
trained to service every product they sell. .
Owned and operated by Randy and Rosie
Seder and their family since 1971, they strive to
offer the personal service only a local small business can provide. This close-knit history shines
through in the companys one-on-one approach to
clients, said Seder. "L&R is dedicated to providing
the sales expertise and support to every one of
our customers, both residential and commercial",
he said.
"Our sales staff at L&R all has the same expertise and experience in product knowledge, service,
parts and accessories." explained Steve, noting
that the company's employees "put their training
where their products are". "Our expertise is in the
products we sell, we try to test all our new equipment at our own homes and businesses", he said.
As extra insurance, customers can test drive
products before making a purchase on their cus-

tom landscaped test mowing yard. The "John

Deere Promise" is a 30 day money-back guarantee that you will love your new tractor or Deere
will replace, trade to a new model, or buy-back
the unit. No questions asked! John Deere is offering $500 off all their Select Series tractors made

Habit for Humanity Restore opens in Germantown

A new one stop shop for furniture, appliances, cabinetry and construction and building supplies just opened
in Germantown.
The Habitat for Humanity ReStore, the ReStore affiliate
of Habitat for Humanity of Washington and Dodge
Counties, opened last September at W188N10707
Maple Rd., Germantown, Wis to much excitement.
"Its the only store in the world that helps build homes,"
ReStore Manager Bernie Hletko said.
Indeed the ReStore is the only retail store that actually
helps people get brand new, affordable housing as all
the profits go straight into Habitats home construction
and home repair programs.
But thats not all. The ReStore takes donations from the
public and nationwide businesses and offers them to customers at half off of retail. Imagine finding a brand new
Anderson window at half cost. They even offer free pick
up for donations.
"Its amazing what youll find at the ReStore," Hletko
said. "It has everything and the kitchen sink."
With the profits from their three ReStores as well as
grants from various organizations such as Thrivent
Financial, Habitat for Humanity of Washington and
Dodge Counties is currently building their 31st home. In
collaboration with that the affiliate has helped to repair
numerous homes through their "A Brush With Kindness"
program.
"The way the ReStore works with the affiliate is not
something you see everyday," Hletko said. "To see such
collaboration and such a willingness to help other people
is amazing. Ill be hard pressed to find another nonprofit
that is set up like Habitat. We are one of a kind because

at the end of the day

we will do anything to
help these people."
So what is a Habitat
house? How do people qualify for one?
Executive Director
Russell Wanta said that
a Habitat home is an
affordable house built
completely by volunteers that through the
power of partnership
and a zero interest
loan is made available
to people that demonstrate a strong need.
"We like to partner
with people in the community that need a hand up in life,"
Wanta said. "Through 250 hours of partnership and
financial commitment to us we are empowering these
deserving people to own their homes and be an active
part of the neighborhood and the community."
Wanta said the ReStore is one of the most crucial ways
they make these affordable homes possible. He added
that the secret to all of Habitats success is "average people that are looking to make a difference in their communities."
"We are 100% volunteer powered," Wanta said.
"Everyone you see out there with the exception of the
build site supervisors is a volunteer. Without these wonderful volunteers, we would be left scratching our heads

wondering what to do."

Volunteers are a necessary portion of the Habitat
model.
"The volunteers are what make the store, they are one
of our greatest assets and we are always looking for
more," Wanta said.
If you want to volunteer or would like more information
about Habitat for Humanity of Washington and Dodge
Counties, email marketing@hfhwashco.org or call 262338-0690.
If youd like more details on the Germantown ReStore
or would like to schedule a donation pick up contact
Bernie Hletko at 262-255-7470.

Benedons looks forward to serving

Menomonee Falls for many more years
It's been six years since Benedon's moved into the
Falls from the Colonial Plaza to the current location at N85 W16158 Appleton Avenue, next to BelAire flowers and Chen's Chinese restaurant.
We're proud to part of this great community and
have made great friends and acquaintances, here,
and look forward to the next 6 years and more.
The staff now includes Chuck, Sam and Judy
Benedon and Brandon Dearth.
Chuck is a diamond dealer and jewelry manufacturer by trade for over 35 years. He's a skilled
guitarist, likes politics and law.
Sam is an outstanding musician, specializing in
guitar while also playing multiple instruments. He's
built numerous guitars and does set up and repair on
some instruments. He's a "gear-head" with extensive
knowledge in vintage gear.
Judy is a former grade school teacher whose
organizational skills help Chuck keep the place
together. She's the real boss and office manager.
B randon, a "picker" since childhood, specializes
in coins and currency and other specialty items.
Last year, we got our Federal Firearms License
and currently provide loans on guns, along with the

other things we've been doing, here.

We are the only licensed pawnbroker in
Menomonee Falls and there are very few in the
entire metropolitan area, and the ONLY Firearms
pawnbroker in southeast Wisconsin. We know that
there are many businesses that advertise online and
in the yellow pages under the pawnbroker headings, but are not pawnbrokers, at all. They simply use
the term in a way that is wrong and misleading, to
bait you in to sell your valuables. Pawn is a collateral based loan, plain and simple. If it's not a loan,
it's not a pawn. Selling your things is simply "selling."
In some circles, it might be called "hocking."
We hold four federal, state and local licenses,
three bonds and are insured. This is not something to
take lightly when selling your valuables. As an example, a retail jeweler is only required to have a second hand dealer's license to buy your products no
bonds or further licensing required. Pawnbrokers
with licensing like ours, at Benedon's, withstand federal and state background criminal checks and the
state bank license requires yearly reporting to the
Department of Financial Institutions banking division
and a clean financial history.

Benedon's is helpful and very loose with information that other dealers won't give you. If you want to
know the real cost of things, stop in and ask!
Particularly, with jewelry, the markups can be large,
and the appraised values even more out of control.
As Chuck likes to say, "Dont be a victim of retail theft
by the retailer!" Don't pay too much for things you
can get elsewhere for less. Come in and let us help
you, since, We also sell things, too!
Chuck has been a wholesale diamond dealer
and jewelry manufacturer for most of his career.
Prices at Benedon's are well below any competitor.
We don't stock a ton of stuff, but if we have it, you're
guaranteed a bargain.
Right now we are looking for: Rolex watches,
Omega watches, large diamonds.
Here are some sample Christmas deals.
Compare and save: o1.71ct Marquise diamond ring
with Triangle side stones: $6.500; o1.76ct Princess
cut (H-VS1) diamond ring : $12,500; o2.19ct Round
diamond "Halo" engagement ring: $6,500; o1.03ct
Round diamond "Halo" engagement ring: $3,800;
oRings and other nice jewelry items, new and refurbished from $50 on up.

Girls basketball: Early lead

lifts Preble past Chargers
The Hamilton girls basketball team was
unable to recover from an early deficit
against Green Bay Preble Nov. 29, as the
Chargers lost to Preble 62-54 at the
Brookfield Central Thanksgiving Shootout.
Preble held a 18-12 lead after the first
quarter and held on to a lead of between
six and nine points during the second quarter. A basket by Macy Williams with 54 seconds left in the third quarter cut the Preble
lead to 39-34 but Preble answered with a
basket on the other end with 4 seconds left
in the quarter. A three point basket by
Sammy Hagenow at the 6:27 mark of the
fourth quarter made the score 43-37 in
favor of Preble, but Hamilton could not get
any closer.
Afterward, Hamilton Coach Bill Scasny
indicated that his teams defense was a
concern, as they did not block out or seal
lanes to the basket for Preble.
Back to the drawing board, Scasny

said.
Scasny also said seven turnovers contributed to Preble taking an early lead.
One day to work on it, then we got a
game on Tuesday (Dec. 2), so weve got to
keep moving on, Scasny said.
Hamilton got its first win of the season
Dec. 2, as the Chargers topped Kenosha
Tremper 58-38. Klug led Hamilton with 24
points.
The Germantown girls basketball team
opened the season with two wins. The
Warhawks topped Brookfield East Nov. 21,
67-48. Kenzie Schmitz led Germantown
with 20 points. On Dec. 2, Germantown
opened the North Shore Conference portion of its schedule with a 72-23 win over
Port Washington.
The Menomonee Falls girls basketball
