John the Baptist Paves the Way for Jesus!

ohn the Baptist enters in our Christian

consciousness as the fire-blazing
messenger from God the Father, oozing
with passion, super-charged with the Holy
Spirit, and sent on a mission by God the
Father to mankind to prepare the way for
the coming of His Son, Jesus Christ.
Throughout Biblical history, when God
the Father speaks to a person or group of
people, he speaks through his messengers
or prophets. John the Baptist was this
messenger, this prophet, whose ministry in
the desert became the forerunner of Jesus
own public ministry. We find this turning
point in the Gospel according to Mark in 1:18. The Gospel of Mark is acknowledged by
Church scholars as the first of the canonical
Gospels to be written.
From the prophet Abraham after the
fall of Adam and Eve, John the Baptist is
the last in the long line of prophets sent
by God the Father to proclaim to mankind
the coming ministry of Jesus. God, through
John, sends His people faith and hope, and
they are to be made new. John announces
that with Jesus coming presence among
them, their salvation is near.
Mark portrays John as a voice in
the desert who cries: Prepare the way of
the Lord, make his paths straight. Mark
reveals that this story of John has already
been foretold in the Old Testament, in the
books of the prophets Malachi and Isaiah,
who, says: Look, I am going to send my
messenger before you; he will prepare your
way.
As this voice in the desert, John is
overflowing with passion through the fire of
the Holy Spirit. He is jolting in his presence,
all the more to jolt the people from their
complacency. John comes to us to jolt us
from the safe comfort of our modern lives.
John jolts us into recognizing Christ Jesus
when the opportunity to proclaim Him
comes in our daily situation.
John starts his ministry as he appears
in the desert, proclaiming a baptism of
repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The
entire Judaea and all the people of Jerusalem
were going to him and were being baptized
by him in the River Jordan as they confessed

their sins. Here, the evangelist Mark points

out that the people were going to John en
mass, not as individuals, but as groups or
communities.
Taking off from this communitarian
action of the people of Judaea, we take
note of its peculiarity from that of last
Sundays Gospel, where the emphasis was
on personal watchfulness and alertness,
which Jesus called on His disciples to abide,
and is a very personal interior response.
For this second Sunday of Advent,
Mark in 1:1-8 invites us to go farther in
our interior disposition by preparing
Jesus path in our hearts and by purposely
undergoing a baptism of repentance for
the forgiveness of sins. This baptism calls
for us to draw inner strength from the core
seat of our spirit as a personal response
towards celebrating Advent in the spirit of
community life.
In this baptism of repentance, God
is inviting mankind to take on a new
direction in their lives, a new perspective
as Christians, to take on their Christianity
in the spirit of community life, as expanding

communities of believers. The great Doctor

of the Church, St. Therese of the Child Jesus,
said it all so appropriately: We do not go
to heaven alone, by our lonely selves. When
we go to heaven we also bring along those
within our circle of influence.
In our present-day situation, we
find this community spirit in the lives of
our kabarangayans who compose our
Magagmay nga Kristianong Katilingban; in
our own families; among our officemates in
the company we work for; or in the various
church organizations that we belong to.
These modern communities are mirrors
of the early Christian communities of
Marks time.
In this new liturgical Year of the Poor,
our Advent preparation becomes even
more meaningful, because as communities
of faith, we are challenged to help the poor,
who are poor not only in material things,
but also are poor in spirit.
We prepare ourselves for this baptism
of repentance by preparing our hearts
and minds, in fact, our entire beings, for

What Can Waiting Do For Us?

ow do you like the season of Advent?

Do you find it wonderful and spiritually
meaningful?
The season of Advent is a time of waiting
for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is
a period of time where we actively prepare
ourselves for His arrival in our lives.
Waiting is essentially part and parcel
of our human existence. We wait for the
answers to our prayers. We wait for the
return of a beloved from work or trip
abroad. We wait for things to be finished
or done. We wait for the time when we
can be out of the office and go home to our
loved ones. Some of us would wait for the
coming of a visitor.
Indeed, among our other activities, we
wait. This is what we do every day!
Why do you think God wants us to
wait? Why is waiting an essential part of

our journey?
In waiting, we realize that we are not in control
of everything in our life. God Is. Though we want
that things be done as soon as possible, or want
that people change immediately so that problems
in relationships will cease, we dont have the power
to make things happen according to what we want

and desire. Persons and things are not

robots that can be manipulated by remote
controls. They undergo processes which
we must learn to respect and understand.
When we are confronted with this reality,
we emerge helpless, hoping that in this
helplessness, we shall learn to entrust
everything to the Lord Who Is in control
of everything.
Let our prayer be: Lord, thank you
for this process of waiting. I have learned
that You, my Creator, are in control of
everything. Let me surrender everything
to You, believing that persons and things
become beautiful in Your time. I put my
trust in You as I wait for the beautiful
things You promise to happen in my life.
Make me realize that I am not waiting
alone for You are with me now until the
end of time. Amen.

the coming of Christ into our lives, and

by acknowledging the sinful acts that
we deliberately commit, knowing that
these displease God, Who Is all loving,
merciful, and kind. We also prepare
ourselves by drawing on Gods grace in
this baptism of repentance to extend
our evangelization and charity to our
particular communities. At the core of
this baptism of repentance is our spirit
of humility, for which John the Baptist is a
perfect model..
Mark describes John as one who
wore a garment of camel-skin and lived on
locusts and wild honey. His get-up made
him look odd but humble, for that was
what he really was in his heart - humble
and retreating from self-promotion. The
immensity of his trail-blazing mission to
proclaim the arrival of his Master Jesus
and his preparation of Gods people for
Jesus coming ministry is in such stark
contrast to his humble appearance.
Humility was at the core of John the
Baptists spirit. John is a perfect model of
the person who is humbly waiting for the
promised Redeemer, Who Is Jesus, the
Son of God. John is a perfect model for
the modern man who is humbly grateful
of all that God bestows on him, materially
and spiritually.
Thus, John proclaims Jesus in all
humility, referring to his cousin Jesus

coming ministry, as he declares:

One mightier than I is coming after
me. I am not worthy to stoop and
loosen the thongs of his sandals. I
have baptized you with water; he will
baptize you with the Holy Spirit.
As we continue on our Advent
season in this second Sunday, we go
on to light the second purple candle
of our Advent wreaths as physical
manifestation of the spiritual
preparation that is fired by the Holy
Spirit in our hearts.

I remember the days when we had a series of

trainings as members of the Jaro Evangelization Team
(JET) which was held at the Jaro Convent sometime in
1993. For thirteen straight weeks, we were drilled on
evangelization techniques and had to memorize a set
of Biblical verses that were part of our evangelization
conversations with people whom we met, including
those within the parish. We also had faith-sharing
sessions for our own personal spiritual development.
We were organized into prayer-warriors to keep us
equipped prior to going out to the barangays for
evangelization. We also taught catechesis to kids
at Desamparados. The Jaro Convent is a spiritual
power-house for us, parishioners, and we are deeply
thankful to our priests for such richness of grace.

he Parish of Our Lady of

Candles held a despedida
dinner last November
28, 2014, at the La Isabelita
Hall, for Fr. Ronald de Leon
who will be the new chaplain of
Sta. Barbara Sanitarium. It was
a joyful celebration for a son
who selflessly served his parish
in a humble way. The dinner
was well-attended by parish
personnel and staff, officers of
the tri-council, St. Elizabeth of
Hungary Kinder School staff and
personnel, head and members
of the different ministries and
religious organizations, laborers
of our Candle Factory, Candle
Light staff, youth and BAC
coordinators who rendered a
special song especially composed
for Fr. Ronald. Also in attendance
were Msgr. Gene C. Velarde, Fr.
Nathaniel G. Gentizon, and Fr.
Joenick S. Territorio.
The dinner also served as a
welcome to Fr. Randy Doromal.
Concurrent to being the director
of the Archdiocesan Commission

on Family Life, he will be

the new Parochial Vicar or
Assistant Priest of the parish.
Fr. Randy was ordained in 2007
and hails from Guimaras. Having
Fr. Nathaniel and Fr. Randy
Doromal as parochial vicars,
they call this an invasion of
Guimarasnons in the parish.
Some food during dinner
were shared from the different
barangays of the Parish of Jaro.
We give our heartfelt
thank you to Fr. Ronald for the
memories and for the chance to
work with him.
Welcome Fr. Randy and
were looking forward to a
fruitful partnership in serving
the Parish of Jaro.

flower,

together makes this world a
beautiful garden.
I can see the spark of
eagerness in the eyes of each
child aspiring to become a good
altar-server. I am happy that
they are really making their
best to serve correctly during
the Mass. It is also important
that they are enjoying while
learning not only the flow of
the Mass but also they are
learning to build friendship
with one another.

workshop last November 29,
2014, held at St. Elizabeth
of Hungary Kinder School,
Jaro Cathedral Compound.

Altar Servers (JPMAS) officers

their investiture in January,
2015. This team-building
activity was facilitated by the
JPYM Officers headed by Miss
Julie Ann Blancaflor and Cecil
Nieves of the JPMAS council.
The morning session
was about what Teambuilding and its purpose is.
An activity called Following

Instructions was also given so

that the aspirants will be taught
that listening is very important
as an altar-server. The activities
were about knowing their
selves together with their new
brothers. During our lunch, we
all witnessed how loving and
supportive our parents were.
They prepared a bountiful table
for us. As we enjoyed eating, their
presence and accommodation
reminded us that they were the
reasons why we are here in the
Church; to serve God and His
people.
In the afternoon session, a
game called Treasure Hunting
really tested them on how
they cooperate in this ministry
and how well they know their
weaknesses and strength. After
which, we prepared our selves
for the Mass. During the Mass,
each aspirant received a Cross
which symbolizes the person of
being a servant of God and of His
people.

Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) call
for spiritual preparation before the Popes
Apostolic Visit to the Philippines, the youth of
the Archdiocese of Jaro are organizing a free
recollection in the form of a prayer-concert
on Dec. 6, 6:30 p.m. at the Jaro Metropolitan
Cathedral.
Inspired by the pastoral letter issued by
CBCP president Archbishop Socrates Villegas,
the Vicariate of St. Peter Youth Ministries, in
collaboration with the National Shrine of Our
Lady of Candles Parish, organized the musical
concert, entitled Mercy.
We have discerned and planned to
make Mercy as an overarching theme of
the concert. As the pastoral letter says, Let
us make mercy and compassion our national
identity. Trust in Gods mercy is part and
parcel of our traditional Filipino Christian
culture. Let us make the practice of mercy our
gift to the Pope when he comes to visit us,
said Russel Louie Palmares, Youth Shepherd
of the Vicariate of St. Peter.
According to the youth leader, the
event will be preparative, catechetical and
unifying.
First of all, it is preparative. It is meant
to be a prayer-led and meditative concert to

deepen [in] the hearts of the faithful the love and

reverence to the Holy Father Pope Francis, the
Vicar of Christ, in consonance to his upcoming
Apostolic Visit to the Philippines in January,
2015, Palmares explained.
He said the second objective of the program
is to be catechetical, which means it aims to
inspire mercy and compassion, to help people
be more generous to those in need.
Palmares said concrete ways to do this is for
people to carry out the corporal and spiritual acts
of mercy, especially with the CBCPs declaration
of the Year of the Poor.
Third, it is unifying. It is meant to gather,
celebrate and affirm as one Vicariate through

t has been over a year since superstorm Yolanda devastated part of our
Archdiocese, particularly the Northern
Iloilo parishes. Just like the many others
who responded immediately to affected
communities, the Jaro Archdiocesan Pastoral
Secretariat (JAPS), being the pastoral arm
of the Archdiocese, brought limited relief
goods as we did not have funds for disaster
response. Our inadequacy led us to tiny
Naborot Island, the only island barangay of
the parish of San Dionisio where we piloted
the REBUILD Project which is considered as
our faith-response with the commitment to
help them rebuild their lives, their hopes and
their community.
The task was not easy and is far from
done, but we have already witnessed some
inspiring transformation. And more than

what we probably gave, we received more as we

learned a lot along the path of rebuilding.
This young experience is captured in a
documentary film by TM Malones, described by
the Film Development Council of the Philippines
as a new breed of film director. JAPS and REBUILD
Project are blessed when TM Malones, who is an
Ilonggo, took as his personal advocacy to document
the project implementation since the start. While
the process of rebuilding continues, Director TM
Malones had documented enough to make the
film Dapya sang Paglaum which captures the
rebuilding efforts from his own perspectives.
The documentary premiers on December 8,
2014, to open the week-long Ilonggo Film Festival
(CineKasimanwa) at SM Cinema 1, at 3:30 p.m. The

the rest of the faithful in the archdiocese to

With Mary as our model of mercy,
we hope that the concert will not just be
entertaining but essentially catechetical
and evangelical. We encourage especially
the students and other young people to
take part in this activity, Palmares said.

advantages of going to the Popes
general audience during the winter,
is that the crowds arent as big, which
means one has a higher chance of actually
greeting Pope Francis and maybe even
chatting with him for a bit.
You gave me Communion. Do you
remember?
Even though it was cold and windy, one
group made it a point to bring their humor
and props to see the Pope. And he, took
notice.
The weather isnt that great. Its a bit

gloomy. But youre brave and when the going gets

tough, the tough get going. Lets move forward.
As part of his catechesis, the Pope talked about
his trip to Turkey and the need for all governments
to respect religious freedom.
Ive expressed the need for Christians and
Muslims to work together for solidarity, peace and a
peaceful coexistence.
One of the most moving and also painful
moments of the trip, he said, was his meeting with
young refugees, who fled from the Islamic State. In
Turkey alone there are over 1.5 million refugees.
My last meeting...it was beautiful, but also
painful. That last meeting was with a group of

young refugees. It was very important for

me to meet with a group of refugees from
the Middle East. It was also a way for me
to express my personal closeness and that
of the Church. It was a way to recognize
Turkeys hard work and their hospitality.
Strengthening the ties between the
Catholic and Orthodox Church was also a
major theme of the visit. In fact, the Pope
met with Patriarch Bartholomew several
times throughout the trip.
Towards the end of his audience, the
Pope encouraged Christians to prepare
spiritually for Christmas.

Mother who always intercedes for us?
As we celebrate the Solemnity of
the Immaculate Concepcion, we venerate
Mary who was immaculately conceived in
the womb of her mother, St. Anne. We believe
that Mary was preserved from any stain of sin
because of her role as Mother of our Savior,
Jesus Christ.
The proclaimed dogma of the Roman
Catholic Church states that the most
Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instance
of her conception, by a singular grace and
privilege granted by Almighty God, in view
of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of
the human race, was preserved free from all
stain of original sin. The doctrine teaches
that from her conception Mary received the
sanctifying grace that would normally be
infused with Baptism after birth. Hence, she
has always been freed from original sin since
her conception.

Angkan ni Vicente Celebrates 145th Year Foundation

Ferrer Seminary celebrated its 145th
Foundation. Those who came were not
only the graduates of the minor seminary
but also those who were enrolled and had
been under the seminary formation even for
a day, a week or a month only. They were the
Angkan ni Vicente.
The
seminarians
in-charge
of
registration and I were at the front pasillo
when Archbishop Jose S. Palma, D.D., of Cebu
Archdiocese, popularly known among the
angkans as JoePal, arrived. We welcomed
him warmly, feeling so happy that he was
back in the seminary everybodys second
home. At 10:00 oclock in the morning, the
Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was celebrated.
Archbishop Palma was the main celebrant
and at the same time the homilist with
Fathers Napial, Galon, Esperancilla, Silva,
Tacardon M., Billones, Angostura, Serania,
and Archbishop Angel N. Lagdameo as the
concelebrants.
Archbishop Palma expressed his joy
in being back at the seminary. He said
that, All of us, angkan ni Vicente, have

given something beautiful to our home, as an

appreciation of our faith. All of us received
something beautiful from our home. We
should speak about it - to transmit the good,
the beautiful, and the true and to put these gifts
at the service of one another, to speak and to
share this something that is good, with others.
Archbishop Palma further said: Reaching
out to people especially of different cultures,
and especially the poor, is a great challenge
for us. Think of the many dimensions of our
culture: the pakikisama, hospitality, utang na
loob and others. These dynamics of our culture
can help us, Catholic Filipinos, in reaching out
sincerely. Every dialogue makes us reach out
and realize the value of words in the spirit of
sacrificing for religion. Another point is to
be understanding in diversity. Perhaps we
must put more emphasis on the relevance of
reaching out through dialogue. Other points
he emphasized were the following: Live simply
so that others will simply live; direct program
to the poor; advocacy must be in terms of
legal system; and have a good dialogue with
the youth. Although we are all frail, imperfect
human beings, our strength depends on the
Lord. We do the best we can in the merits of
the Lord and Mama Mary!
Before the final blessing, Angkan Alex
Porras thanked everybody, the priests, lay
alumni and the faculty.
Present among
the lay alumni were Atty. Vicente de Asis,
Frank Guzman, Angel de Leon of Taytay
sang Kauswagan, Pablo Araneta and other
small-brother angkans. After lunch the good
Archbishop left for Cebu.
After our hearty and tasty meal, we did
not leave our table immediately. We gathered
together and enjoyed the reminiscence of the
angkans of their past at the St. Joseph Junior
Seminary, where they spent their high school
or the so-called seminario minor. They spent
their time remembering how kulit they were;

With this Solemnity, we celebrate Gods

love and faithfulness. How our Father really
desires to save us. The birth of our Blessed
Mother signifies the dawn of our salvation.
God gradually fulfills His promise of our
redemption.
Let us thank the Lord for the gift of our
Blessed Mother. Through her, Jesus was born
so that we will be saved.
Moreover, we renew our devotion to Mama
Mary. As our Mother, she never abandons us.
She will always take care of us. Let the prayer
entitled Memorare be our wonderful offering
for our Blessed Mother on this day and always:
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled to
thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy
intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this
confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my
Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand,
sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word
Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy
mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

The whole day was spent for bonding. In the

n December 8, we will be celebrating the feast of Mary Immaculate,

our most Blessed Mother, the instrument of God, who, through the
Holy Spirit, conceived Jesus, the only Son of God, Who was sent by
the Father to save the world from the evil effects of sin.
When the fallen angels got jealous of Gods love for men, they
devised all kinds of evil in order to deprive us of Gods kingdom. God had
no choice but to send Jesus to redeem us from the clutches of sin.
With our Immaculate Mothers acceptance, she became Jesus
mother, Who was born in a stable in a cave in Bethlehem on the cold night
of Christmas.
Our Messiah became an instrument of redemption. His examples
of obedience to the Father and His love for us who are His brothers and
sisters, make December 25 a very important date in the course of our
existence.
Jesus through examples and teachings was able to gather a group of
apostles and disciples, who implemented Gods commandments and the
seven sacraments which produce saving graces to those who follow and
live them.
Today, the clergy and the nuns are doing their utmost to become
messengers of salvation. They leave their homes and spread Gods word
from the mountains to the metropolis. They find comfort in preaching
the tenets of salvation forgetting comfort and braving danger if only
to become the faithful messengers of God. They do not have permanent
places to stay. But there are convents for our priests, who are shuffled
from one place to another.
This last week of November, Fr. Ronald de Leon, left Jaro for a new
assignment, Sta. Barbara. He will be doing his job in a new environment,
and he will be using utmost psychology in implementing the Word of
God in his place of responsibility. We will surely miss his leadership and
Christian influence, his good humor and his humility. However, we have
to understand the values that are cherished by our priests, the rules he
has to follow and the places he has to go. We are saying so long to fr.
Ronald, but not goodbye.
This December is full of memories for me. Last December 3, my sonin-law, his son, and I, heard Mass at the Jaro Cathedral at 12:15 noon. It
was a death anniversary Mass for my eldest daughter, Ma. Carmeli L. Uy,
who left this world last year. There were only the, three of us, since the
rest were in their jobs in school since it was a school day. When the Mass
was over, many of our friends were there; Carmelis former classmates
and co-teachers. They told me that they have read the Mass schedule in
last weeks issue of Candle Light. Another December gift or me. The Mass
was officiated by Fr. Joenick Territorio who is assigned at the Chancery
of Jaro. He said it very clearly and his homily was simple, but touching.
Let us all pray for December to be free from typhoons and other
natural calamities. Let us also pray that our government authorities will
prohibit the firing of firecrackers that are done any time even late at
night, and are thrown anywhere, even in public places.
Let us not think of ourselves alone. Let us also think of others. We
must always consider our safety and peace.
God loves and helps those who help themselves. Let us make our
devotion to Him stronger and firmer and trust more in His concern and
love for us. Feel your heart now. He is there!
