1) What happens when fuel is burnt with air?

1) Oxidation
2) Reduction
3) Distillation
4) Combustion
2) What is Low calorific value?
The heat value after deducting the heat of vaporization for the moisture
content in the combustion product.
3) What is the use of Steam?
1) For power generation
2) Process steam
3) To drive rotating equipment
4) Domestic heating
5) Desalination
6) Refrigeration
4) What is Circulation ratio?
It is the ratio of water steam mixture to the steam at the outlet of riser.
5) What is Excess air?
Practically there is no system to ensure perfect union of the air and fuel
with 100%theoritical air. it is essential to supply excess air ,freely
available for combustion to take place. This excess air must be held at
practical minimum to reduce the stack heat losses.
6) What is Pulverized fuel firing?
This is generally adopted in coal fired boilers of large capacity. Coal is
ground in mill and transported to the furnace as coal air mixture and burns
in suspension. The air used to carry the powdered coal is called primary
air.
7) What do you mean by Boiler failure?
It refers to any incident that disturbs the operating ability of boiler.
8) What do you mean by load control range?
It is the load in which the automatic control system of the boiler responds
quickly to the load variation without the interference of the operating
personnel.
9) In which cases does the water level fall out of sight of the water gauge?
1) Failure of the BFW supply.
2) Momentary fluctuation due to extraordinary changes in load.
3) Neglect of the operator.

10) What may happen due to low water in the boiler?

It may be anything from leakage to explosion of course it depends greatly
upon the type of boiler, the rate of combustion and just how low the water
level is.
11) In the case of high water level what will happen?
It may lead to carryover of BFW and cause priming.
12) How will you detect priming?
It is indicated by rapid fluctuation in the outlet steam temperature.
13) What will you do when there is rapid fluctuation in the outlet steam
temperature?
1) Rate of steam generation is to be reduced.
2) Water level, if abnormally high, is to be checked.
3) Alkalinity and TDS of BFW are to be checked.
4) Investigation of the condition of the drum internals, when opportunity
comes, is to be carried out.
14) What will happen to the superheater in the case of starvation?
The superheater coils will get overheated and this may result in warping
of tubes or in extreme cases, tube failure.
15) What are the consequences of overloading a boiler?
1) Affect the design circulation velocity.
2) Result in higher flue gas temperature.
3) Bring about higher superheated steam temperature that may lead to
superheater coil failure by bulging or overheating.
16) Why is it not advisable to run a boiler at part load?
Constant running of a boiler at part load will cut short its due to rapid wear
and tear.
17) What are the reasons for black smoke emission through the chimney of a
spreader stoker?
1) Incomplete combustion of fuel in the furnace and disintegrated carbon
particles being released without being completely burned in the
furnace.
2) Carryover of coal fines due to excess of its percentage in the coal feed.
3) Low supply of secondary air that would otherwise complete the
combustion.
18) How many methods are there for the preservation of boilers?
1) Preservation by wet method.
2) Preservation by dry method.
