Georeferencing
Atleasttwolayersneeded:
1) Layerthatneedstobegeoreferenced,and
2) Alayerthatisalreadygeoreferenced,whichyouwilluseasabasemap.
OpenArcMap&TurnontheGeoreferencingToolbarandtheEditorToolbar
1. OpenArcMap
2. SelectView/Toolbar/Georeferencing
AddControlPoints
ViewLinkTable
3. Afterselectingcontrolpoints,zoomintooneofthemsoyoucanplaceyour
mouseasaccuratelyaspossibleonthepoint.
4. UnderGeoreferencing,uncheckAutoadjust.
5. ClickontheAddcontrolpointsbutton.
6. Clickontheidentifiedpointonthemapimageandmovethemousesomewhere
abitfurtheraway.Thenclickthemouseagain.Youllseealinebetweenagreen
pointandaredpoint.Thegreenpointisatwhatsreferredtoasthesource.
Theredpointisatwhatsreferredtoasthetarget. Ifyouwantedtowarpthe
imagesuchthatitoverlaidwithadatalayeryouhadaddedtoArcMap,thered
pointwouldneedtobeplacedatthecorrespondingpointoftheexistingdata
layer.
7. Thegreenpointisatwhatsreferredtoasthesource. Theredpointisat
whatsreferredtoasthetarget.Ifyouwantedtowarptheimagesuchthatit
overlaidwithadatalayeryouhadaddedtoArcMap,theredpointwouldneedto
beplacedatthecorrespondingpointoftheexistingdatalayer. However,inthis
example,youarenotwarpingtheimagetooverlaywithadatalayerinArcMap.
Rather,youllneedtoprovideArcMapthetargetcoordinatevalues.Todothis,
clickontheviewlinktablebuttonontheGeoreferencingtoolbar.Changethe
mapxandmapyvaluestoreflecttherealworldvaluesreadfromthemap.
8. Repeatsteps6and7forallofyourcontrolpoints.Ifyoumakeamistake,youcan
deleteacontrolpointbyselectingtheappropriaterowinthetableandpressing
theDeletekeyonyourkeyboard.Inthisexample,thefinaltablelookslikethis:
9. Whenyouhavefinishedenteringcontrolpointdata,clickonOKtoclosethelink
table.
10. SelectGeoreferencing/Rectify.Inthenextwindow,changeanyofthedefaultsif
desired.Whentherectificationprocessisfinished,youwillseethat.tifand*.tfw
fileshavebeencreated.
11. SelectGeoreferencing/UpdateDisplaytoviewyourresults.Nowyoushouldbe
abletooverlayotherdata(providedthosedatausethesamecoordinatesystem).
CreateNewShapefile.
1. ClickontheArcCatalogbotton.
2. OnceArcCataloghasopenednavigatetothefolderwhereyouaresavingyour
workinthecolumnontheleft.Clickonthefolderthatthenewshapefileshould
bestoredin.ThengotoFile\New\Shapefile.
3. IntheCreateNewShapefilewindow,youcannameyourshapefile,andselectthe
typeofshapefileyouwanttoadd.ClickontheFeatureTypedropdownboxand
clickonPolygon,thenclickOK.
EditingYourShapefile
1. SelectView\Toolbars\EditortobringuptheEditorToolbar.

ClickontheEditorintheEditorToolbar.
InthedropdownmenuclickStartEditing.Awindowwillpopupandlistthe
layersavailableforediting.Clickonyourshapefile,andclickStartEditing.
ClickontheSketchToolnexttotheEditorButton,andbegindrawingyour
shapefile.ThisisverysimilartocreatingalinedrawinginMicrosoftOffice
programs.Clickthemapwhereyouwantthebeginningoftheshapetobe,and
thencontinueclickingateachcornerorwhereyouwanttoplaceavertex(a
pointcapableofmanipulation).
Whenyouarefinishedaddingyourlastvertex,rightclickandchoosefinish
sketchordoubleclickingthemouse.

6. GototheEditorButtonandclickSaveEdits.
7. Whenyouvefinishedaddingyourlastpolygon,gototheEditorButtonandclick
StopEditinginthedropdownbox.
LoadTheTerrainData
1. Clickonthe
icontoaddtherasterdata.
2. Inthedialogbox,navigatetothelocationofthedata;selecttherasterfile
smdemcontainingtheDEMforSanMarcosandclickontheAddbutton.
3. TheaddedfileislistedintheArcMapTableofcontents.Youcanrecolorthe
rasterbygoingtothethemesProperties/Symbologyandchoosinganewcolor
ramp
4. SaveyourArcMapdocumentwhereyouwantyourresultsfilestoappearas
SanMarcosBasin.mxd

3. DEMReconditioning
ThefunctionneedsasinputarawDEM(orLevelDEM)andalinearfeatureclass
(e.g.rivertoburnin)thatbothhavetobepresentinthemapdocument.
1) SelectTerrainPreprocessing\DEMManipulation\DEMReconditioning.
2) Selecttheappropriateinputdemandlinearfeature(streamstoburnin).The
outputisareconditionedAgreeDEM(defaultnameAgreeDEM).
3) EnteraStreambuffer:thisisthenumberofcellsaroundthelinearfeaturefor
whichthesmoothingwilloccur.
4) EntertheSmoothdrop/raisevalue:thisistheamount(inverticalunits)that
the linear feature will be dropped (if the number is positive) or the fence
extruded(ifthenumberisnegative).Thisvaluewillbeusedtointerpolatethe
DEM into the buffered area (between the boundary of the buffer and the
dropped/raisedvectorfeature).
5) Enter the Sharp drop/raise value: this is the additional amount (in vertical
units)thatthelinearfeaturewillbedropped(ifthenumberispositive)orthe
fence extruded (if the number is negative). This results in additional
burning/fencing on top of the smooth buffer interpolation and needs to be
performedtopreservethelinearfeaturesusedforburning/fencing.
6) ClickOK.Uponsuccessfulcompletionoftheprocess,theAgreeDEMlayeris
addedtothemap.
4. SelectTerrainPreprocessing\DEMManipulation\FillSinkstocreateHydroDEM
layer,namedbydefaultFil.
5. SelectBatchPointGeneration(gaugingstation)
1) Enterthebatchpointfeatureclass.
2) FillinthefieldsNameandDescription.
