The intended audience of this video would be Scientists, doctors, researchers. The
discourse communities that this video would be brought to would be animal activists
groups, animal protection agencies and organizations, and debate teams.
2. What does the audience already know and what do they want to know?
-
Animal testing has been around since approximately 500 BC and has helped with
advancement of human kind by medicine and treatments for illnesses. As the testing
and research continues, human health and the chance to survive illnesses that in the
past were death sentences improve. What the audience would like to know is, what
are the ethics of animal testing? Where is the line drawn for these tests? Why is there
no alternative to animal testing?
3. How much time will the audience spend with each genre?
-
The amount of time needed for this genre would be about 20 minutes. This is due to
the video being 16 minutes long and then taking a few minutes after to reflect over
the different points and views that were brought up.
The purpose of this video was to persuade the audience that animal testing is or isnt
justified. This video is persuading because many different views, beliefs and
perspectives are brought forth by the speakers that try to prove that one side is wrong
as well as the chance that any of the arguments made may resonate with the audience

and bring them to a side. This video was also to entertain the audience by being a live
broadcasted debate.
5. How formal/ informal is the language?
-
The debate is spoken in a formal language not only because it is being broadcasted
live by the BBC network but because the debaters are those of scientists, researchers,
priests and others of higher education and reputation.
There is not specialized vocabulary used, everything that was said was said in terms
that the general public would be able to understand.
7. What other language features do you notice (text, type, font, color, visuals, etc.)?
-
The genre establishes its credibility with the audience by having speakers of high
reputation like Prof. John stein (Oxford functional neurosurgery group), Kaila
Eglington (Dr. Hadwen trust for human research), Tom Holder of research and many
others contributing a variety of professional point of views.
Some emotions that may be stirred up by this genre may be anger, the audience may
or may not agree with facts or claims made by the speakers.

There is no evidence presented in the video to support claims. What they use to
support their information is there title and there experience.
The debate starts off with the oxford professor (Prof. John Stein) explaining why he
thinks animal testing is justified from a scientific point of view. Then one by one
others put their input in the matter starting from scientific to idealistic, to religious
and realistic points of views.
2. Are there limitations placed on the information because of the genre? Does it have more
freedom to express what it needs to because of the genre?
-
The only limitations there would be would be foul language because it is a televised
debate. Although this genre gives a lot of freedom for the speakers to express
themselves. You can see the emotions in the way they talk, what they say, how they
say it, and how they verbally and formally attack one another.
The structure facilitates its purpose by constantly stating the pros and cons on the
topic. The pros being what humans have gotten out of this research, what could
happen in the future, and the cons being the concern for animals and the ethics.
