Grade five Myrniong teacher Lydia Lacy said Write As Rain was a competition held

either write a short story or poetry piece, no more than 500 words long.
All of our students participated and nine students had their works published
throughout the book, Ms Lacy said.
They loved participating just to be able to have their names published in the book and

Young people in Moorabool
will now have the chance to
be recognised with awards
in their own right.
The
Moorabool
Youth
Awards will be held as part
of National Youth Week celebrations in April each year.
A motion to hold the awards

was put to the Wednesday 3
December meeting of council by East Ward Councillor
Allan Comrie, following the
recommendation made in a
report prepared by council
staff.
Last year council adopted
the 2013-2016 youth strategy,
which includes the introduction of an awards program
to recognise significant contributions made by young
people in the community.

He achieved a professional
career high on November 23
when he was equal runnerup with Adam Scott at the
Australian Masters, then he
finished tied 10th at the Australian Open in Sydney on
November 30.
Younger decided to capitalise on his momentum and
was a last minute entry into
the NSW PGA Championship held last week, where
he was considered the one to
watch.

prize purse up for grabs,
but a win at the NSW PGA

Abbatoir to relocate

A block of land in Parwan
will be rezoned to accommodate the eventual move
of the abattoir from Bacchus
Marsh.
A block of land in the industrial estate was originally
earmarked as the new location, however drainage and
other water issues mean that
the block adjacent would
better suit as the location of
the abattoir but it first had
to be re-zoned by council to
allow the move.
The motion to re-zone the
block of land was successfully put to the Wednesday 3
December meeting of council by East Ward Councillor
Allan Comrie.
We had to change the zoning from one block of land
because it cant be used because of water issues - flooding and the nearby swamp
so rather than try and go
through that, theyre swapping to another block of land
next door, then theyll eventually shift their abattoir out
there.
It has been on the books for
a long time.
Julie Lancashire, for the applicant, attended the meeting and said not only does
it provide an opportunity to
relocate the abbatoir, but it
also provides opportunity
for other agribusiness.
The applicant owns both
parcels of land, so is just a
land swap, she said.
Councillors voted unanimously in favour of the
motion.

Ignoring the process
East councillors show

bad governance

Two additional nominees
have been appointed to the
inaugural Moorabool Recreation and Leisure Strategic
Advisory Committee amid
controversy.
A report prepared by
council officers assessed 14
nominations from community members to sit on the
committee and provided a
confidential score for each,
ultimately recommending
six.
However the Wednesday
3 December meeting heard
an alternate motion by East
Ward Councillor Tonia
Dudzik to add two more
members despite the two
members not necessarily
having higher scores than
some of the remaining

nominees.
Appointed were Pat Griffin,
Rod Ward, Noel Stanley, Simon Hooper, Shane Dunne,
and Patricia Binks.
East Ward Councillors
Dudzik, Edwards, Comrie
and Spain voted against
Councillors Tatchell, Sullivan and Toohey to add two
more members to the committee - Marg Scarff and
Darran Fowlie.
These two are just as good
as the other six chosen.
These two have a lot to offer;
why in the world would we
turn down good volunteers
that have so much to offer.
It embraces what they can
add to the committee, Cr
Dudzik debated.
Councillor Sullivan argued
that councillors adopted the

terms of reference to appoint
six nominees in August
this year and was voting to
change the decision before
the committee had even met.
We have set the process,
you dont change horses mid
stream.
Councillor Toohey also argued against the change of
process.
Are these two more qualified than the other six who
did not make it? Why did
they get picked and the others didnt?
We should be deferring,
this is ad-hock and disrespectful. It is not good due
process for the other six
who have virtually been cast
aside.
Councillor Comrie agreed
The dreaded Lerdy
that the proper process was

not followed, and explained
why the two members were
added.
We felt they had the expertise to be able to handle it.
We can sometimes do this
in council.
Councillor Spain explained
why he voted in favour of
adding the two members,
saying that deferring a decision on the two additional
members would be wasting
time and resources.
Details of the officers assessment and the scores of
each of the 14 nominations
were provided in confidence to Councillors on 28
November 2014. Thus all
Councillors were aware of
the officers assessments and
were able to make their own
assessments. Of course, officers and Councillors must
make some value judgements in determining a
score for each nomination.
Likewise, value judgements inevitably are in-
volved
in
determining
whether the final composition and size of the Committee enables the diversity criteria to be met and achieves
Councils objectives.
Ultimately it is Councillors,
acting
collectively
upon, but not necessarily
constrained by, Officers advice, who appoint Committee members by means of a
resolution.
In my opinion, Council
is quite entitled to resolve
to increase the number of
Community representatives.
And of course it is Council
who has the authority to
appoint, by resolution, the
members of the Committee.
Councillor Tatchell explained why he voted
against the addition of the
two members.
Whilst I acknowledge
Council can adopt resolutions contrary to parameters
set by previous resolution, I
think the practise is obtuse
to the process. I am con-
cerned that despite officers

following a procedure directed by Council in terms
of the selection process, the
goal posts were moved, and
two members were added
without consideration of
the remaining six people
being part of the secondary
process.
Impartiality is the cornerstone of good governance;
I voted accordingly without prejudice to any of the
applicants.
A division was called, so
that the official record will
reflect that Councillors
Dudzik, Edwards, Spain
and Comrie voted for the alternate motion while Councillors Tatchell, Sullivan and
Toohey voted against.
Cr. Toohey said on the record he will resign from
this committee as per the
charter, leaving only Crs
Spain and Edwards as representatives and the west of
the shire with no voice.
KERB CHATTER

What are the most important issues that your

council should be concentrating on, and why?

A man in his 30s was airlifted from the Lerderderg State
Forest last week and owes
his life to three hikers.
The Greendale man was lost
for three days in the rugged
terrain, telling police he had
gone for a walk on Wednesday 3 December
The man was not prepared
for bushwalking, only having his wallet with him and
no phone, a Victoria Police
spokesperson said.
However he was found at
about 1pm on Saturday 6 December by a group of hikers
who were well prepared
and the rescue was then conducted with the assistance
of the SES and Ambulance
Victoria.
The man had collapsed in
the Lerderderg Gorge and
was close to dying.
He was wearing a high-visibility work shirt, jeans and
work boots and had no food
or water.
A paramedic who attended
the scene said that the mans
blood pressure was dangerously low, his core temperature was just 26 degrees and
his blood sugar was so low
he was drifting in and out of
consciousness.
The paramedic credited the
hikers with saving the mans
life.
The hikers wrapped his
legs and waist in a garbage
bag, gave him clothing for
warmth and phoned emergency services.
The hikers gave an accurate description of their location using park maps and
marker pole numbers. One
of the hikers walked out
to the nearest access road
to meet rescuers. He then
guided paramedics carrying
equipment, as well as Police, in down a steep rugged
walking track which was
made more treacherous by
recent rain.
SES Rescue arrived at the

top of the track and were
ready to walk in to stretcher
the man out. Half way down
paramedics made the call
that the terrain was far too
steep and dangerous to try
and carry the patient out
so we called in the rescue
helicopter.
Upon reaching the patient
we found him in a bad way.
The ambulance helicopter
dropped in a MICA paramedic to the team which was
working on a narrow track
on the ridge of a forested
hill, from where the man
was airlifted to the Alfred
hospital.
Paramedics and police
then had to hike up and
out the two kilometre track
with gear to our vehicles. It
was a great team effort by all
concerned.

Moorabool seats covered in red

IT WAS a Labor trifecta for
residents of Moorabool with
the Labor State Government retaining its seats in
Buninyong, Macedon and
Melton at the election on November 29.
Geoff Howard won his
seat in Buninyong convincingly with 43.6 per cent of
first preference votes (+2.7%
swing) ahead of Liberal
candidate Ben Taylor with
35.1 per cent of votes (-7.4%
swing), Greens candidate
Tony Goodfellow on 10.9 per
cent (-0.4% swing) and Nationals Sonia Smith with 6.2
per cent (+5.5% swing).
Mr Howard said one of the
key issues he would focus
on first was the predicted
severe bushfire threat to Victoria this summer.
I want to talk to CFA staff
and volunteers about issues that they see as being
relevant and working with
relevant ministers to ensure
were properly resourcing
our CFA, Mr Howard said.
There are a broad range of
issues in terms of community facilities. Ill be endeavouring to get support where

possible to map out a plan
to deliver on the publicly
funded commitment to deliver a sewage solution for

Swearing an oath against
family violence, more than
80 Moorabool residents have
come together to mark White
Ribbon Day.
An official ceremony held
at the Lerderderg Library on
Tuesday 25 November also
saw Noelle Dickson tell the
story of her daughter Sarah
Cafferkey, a young Bacchus
Marsh woman murdered by
Steven James Hunter, now
serving a life sentence for
the crime.
Mayor Paul Tatchell was
this years White Ribbon
Day Ambassador.
White Ribbon is about men
taking a stand against other
men, and taking a direct approach in advocating against
the very thing that separates
man from beast; its up to all
of us to get directly involved
in selling the message that
violence against women is
not only unacceptable, but
will not be tolerated in the
Shire of Moorabool - in fact,
anywhere!
If women are experiencing violence or are witness to violence I implore
them to speak out and seek
help, there is a way out.
Some women are tolerat-
ing violence to protect their

children for fear of having
nowhere to go - I plead with
these women to actively seek
the help that is available.
It is up to all of us to break
the cycle - lets name and
shame these men of weak
character, and get involved.
It just might be the circuit
breaker that saves someones

life.
I take this blight on society
personally and I implore all
men to do the same - violence against women is a disease, the cure lies in people
taking a stand.
One in three women will
experience physical, emo-
tional or sexual violence by

a person known to them
throughout their lives.
The current cost of domestic
violence is $15.6 billion per
year estimated to be higher
in consideration of unreported violence.

AVENUE OF HONOUR WORKS
Moorabool Shire Council will be undertaking aerial inspections and tree pruning works in
the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour from Monday 1 December 2014 to Friday 12
December 2014.
These important tree works will be undertaken as part of the ongoing commitment to the
Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour Strategic Management Plan.
Council is periodically undertaking these works to limit the risk to public safety and extend the
life of the trees within the Avenue of Honour.
Works on the trees will be conducted Monday to Friday only during the hours of 8.00am and
5.00pm.
Trafc and other disruptions will be kept to a minimum. Efforts will be made to ensure trafc
disruptions and road closures are minimal, with the primary objective ensuring the safety of
workers, pedestrians, motorists and the general public.

FIRE PREVENTION UPDATE

Council ofcers have been inspecting properties throughout the Shire since late September
and its pleasing to see that there has been considerable effort made to prepare the Shire for
the coming Fire Season. Moorabool Shire has a high number of extreme and high risk areas
within its boundaries and residents need to be aware of the risk posed by wild re. Emergency
authorities have noted that there will be an above average risk of re in grasslands and forests
this season.
Council has issued over 200 Fire Prevention Notices to date to property owners to clear their
blocks for the coming Fire Season. Initial inspections are continuing. Property owners issued
with a Fire Prevention Notice must complete the work by the date specied on the notice and
ensure that their property is maintained for the Fire Season.
Council will commence re-inspections on 8 December 2014.
Property owners who have failed to carry out the work specied in a Fire Prevention Notice risk
heavy nes and will be required to repay the costs of any work carried out by council to comply
with the directions on the notice. The penalty for failing to comply with a Fire prevention Notice
has increased to $1476.00 this season. Additional slashing costs will also be charged.
EXPRESSION OF INTEREST
Bacchus Marsh Racecourse and Recreation Reserve Committee of Management - Chairperson
and Community Representatives (Volunteer Positions)
Council is seeking expressions of interest from community members to undertake the
independent chairperson role and the community representatives role for the Bacchus Marsh
Racecourse and Recreation Reserve Committee of Management.
The Chairperson is responsible for leading the Reserve Committee of Management including
the allocation and management of reserve usage, providing strategic direction for reserve
maintenance and development and is the key liaison with Council.The community representative
positions represent the community on the Committee of Management along with a delegate
from each of the reserve user groups.

Pay to play threat

Dudzik has threatened to
block school children from
accessing Masons Lane reserve unless a state primary
school pays $1200.
In emails originally leaked
to The Ballarat Courier, Cr
Dudzik Chairwoman of
the Reserves Committee
of Management made the
threat to Bacchus Marsh Primary School.
Unless you want a fence
built blocking access or a
shed or storage container

placed in front of the gates
so you can not access the
grounds I suggest you
reconsider.
The school, which supervises its children on the reserve
because the school itself has
limited play areas, had refused to pay up.
Cr Dudzik also said that the
Committee was likely to be
angry if the school did not
pay $1200 per year.

representatives
had a conversation with the
School Principal recently to
get a better understanding
of a range of management
challenges and access needs

The discussion was positive and is continuing. We
are confident that an arrangement addressing the
needs of the major stakeholders can be put into place

shortly.
Mayor Paul Tatchell said
that it needs to be recognised that the Reserve is
public land.
I am sure there is a common sense compromise in
there that will allow this
process to move forward.
This argument should be
about common sense, not
money.
I think it has been blown
out of proportion and it
needs to be put into a context

of whats best for the kids and Id be very disappointed
if they dont have access to
the area.
Mayor Tatchell said he does
not believe that the school
should be forced to pay.
In my view, no. Public land
is public land - it belongs to
the people so if theres other
user groups on there then
there needs to be a common
sense consensus on whats
fair and reasonable. They
dont use the buildings, they
dont use the equipment, basically all theyre using is the

green space.
Have we really got to the
point where we have to pay
for grass? If people have to
pay to use a park, then weve
got it wrong.
Cr Dudzik said negotiations
are continuing and there is
no conflict between Bacchus Marsh Primary School
and the Masons Lane Committee of Management.
Principal Ian Wren declined
to comment on the issue.
New age to increase

club numbers

months will help smaller
communities get the numbers needed to field teams,
says Central Highlands
Football League president
Eddy Comelli.
Mr Comelli said a two-year
trial granted by the AFL
Goldfields
Commission
to change Under 14.5 and
Under 17.5 junior football
age groups to Under 15 and
Under 18 would give each
CHFL club an extra few
players.
In the last couple of years
clubs have only been able to
make numbers from exemptions weve given the players
and clubs. This has basically
formalised the process, Mr
Comelli said.
Its always been an issue
getting enough players to
field sides. By raising ages by
six months it gives each club
an extra few players.
Bungaree Football Club
president Darren Rix said
last year more than half
the CHFL clubs struggled

to get numbers for Under
14.5 teams and a many also
struggled in the Under 17.5
age competition.
This year we had 12 permanent U14.5 players and
we had to go into Ballarat
and get kids who werent
getting a game with the
Ballarat Football League to
come and play for us. I know
at least another eight or nine
clubs struggled, Mr Rix
said.
Most of the clubs are rural
based and we havent got the
numbers that they have in
Ballarat.
Mr Rix helped start the Under 12s CHFL competition
in 2008 and said within two
years every club in the CHFL
had an Under 12 team.
Before that we needed to
keep the age group down a
bit because kids were starting football in the U14.5
competition when they were
only nine or ten-years-old.
Once the U12s got going
there was probably no need
to keep age groups down,

he said.
He said the 14.5 years age

cut-off meant half the players who were in Year 9 would
go up while half would stay
down, splitting up player
groups and friends.
Based on figures supplied by Rod Ward (AFL
Goldfields regional general
manager), with the new age
cut-off 55 kids in U14.5 wont
need to go up. That averages
to three players per club, he
said.

council, the motion to endorse the charter was judged
to pre-empt proper process
and was voted to be deferred
until a future meeting.
West Ward Councillor Tom
Sullivan successfully argued
that a point in the charter

stating that council should
consult with young people
on issues should be expanded to include the whole community, asking if it means
that council will not consult
with any other group.
Councillor Dudzik responded by saying that she
was against censoring the
dreams and aspirations of
young people.
However Councillor Sullivan explained that it is a
matter of process that the issues of young people be put

to the whole community.
My objection is not against

youth or the people who
drafted this it should go
out for consideration to the
broader community, it is the
process.
Councillors voted in favour
of Councillor Sullivans motion to defer the charter,
which will go before council
at a date to be fixed.

Play pod unites fun

Primary School have an impressive new toy to fill their
recess and lunchtime play
with exciting games.
Its a novel idea taking a
shipping container, having
it sprayed in the schools colours, fitted with a roller door
and delivered to the playground for just $5000.
It houses outside play
equipment so that it can stay
out of the weather and
where it has been put.
You cant leave that stuff
outside because it ends up
on the roof over the weekend, explained Principal
Julie Ferguson. So I started
an online search and found a
company that repaints shipping containers and puts in
a roller door.
We pack everything up
in there - weve got monitors and house captains that
put it all away, it only takes
a couple of minutes. Its a
shemozzle in there, but the
kids go and pull it all out
every play time.
The play equipment inside is designed so that the
students can have problem
solving play, creative play
and open ended play.
I brought in pieces of
Christmas coloured fabrics
and they dress up in it or
wrap them around things,
one is green and that becomes the water around the
boat.
I got a couple of old oars
and they pull each other
around in the old baby
bath people have donated
tents and picnic baskets and
dried flowers, giant pots - the
students build spaceships
out of them, cubbies, they
have mini stilts, boats, a family made a steering wheel on
a stand and that becomes a
driver for the ship.
I was at a plumbing place
on the weekend and bought
black plastic tubing, the
students talk to each other
through it, and theres a teepee and the students had
pipes going out of the window of the tee-pee around
the corner and they were
talking to each other.

old pipes, they build things
with those or they put them

Staff as well as parents have
been sourcing the materials for the play pod, with
donations from the community welcome of any equipment that is not sharp or
dangerous.
Another benefit is that the
play pod sees the children
bonding.
It caters for the whole

school and its really interesting how they play differently with the equipments
- theres dress-ups and they
can have tea parties, and
teddy bear picnics - the play
has completely changed, this
has taken off, the little ones
are playing with the big ones
and children who dont normally play together are playing together.
The popularity has been so
explosive that grades now
take turns each day with the
play pod.

A group of Moorabool Shire

farmers grew more than
their usual crops last month,
as part of the 2014 Movember Challenge.
The Balliang Food and Fibre Group are a collection of
young, and young at heart
farmers from the Balliang region who gather together to
discuss ideas based around
sustainability and farming.
The group of 11 men decided to take part in this years
Movember Challenge in order to help raise awareness
for mens health.
Group member, Chris Sharkey said the initiative was
a great way to get everyone
together, and raise money in
the progress.
Farmers are probably
some of the worst to be effected by mental health, and
unfortunately there are a lot
of suicides in rural Australia. We spend a lot of time on
our own so we thought we
could get everyone together

and have a bit of fun while
raising money, he said.
The group raised a total of
$2, 275, with a number of
donations received from corporate companies such as PJ
Harvesting and Landmark
Bannockburn.

said although the team
didnt have a Movember goal
to begin with, they could
now use this years total as a
benchmark for 2015.
We just thought we would
put it out there and see how
we go, so hopefully we will
back it up next year, and now
that we have a target we can
hopefully beat it, he said.

Humans are the newest age

As promised last week,
this writer, in leading up to
Christmas, will get philosophical. It is hard at this
time of year to get philosophical as there are so
many Christmas things to
do. Isnt that just one of the
biggest problems? How long
can we keep celebrating
Christmas by buying and
buying more? Anyway, back
to the philosophical bent.
It is very hard for a scientist
to become a philosopher. It
seems science is science and
philosophy is philosophy.
Anything in between is considered as New Age. Well
this weeks person of interest is Brian Swimme. The
following quotations are his.
Brian Swimme is a professor at the California Institute
of Integral Studies, in San
Francisco, where he teaches
evolutionary cosmology to
graduate students in the
Philosophy, Cosmology, and

Consciousness
program.
He received his Ph.D. (1978)
from the department of
mathematics at the University of Oregon for work with
Richard Barrar on singularity theory, with a dissertation entitled Singularities
in the N-Body Problem.
Swimmes primary field of
research is the nature of the
evolutionary dynamics of
the universe. Swimme might
call himself a mathematical
cosmologist a real scientist.
His published work includes The Universe is a
Green Dragon (Bear and
Company, 1984), The Universe Story (Harper San
Francisco, 1992), written
with Thomas Berry.
Unless we live our lives with
at least some cosmological
awareness, we risk collapsing into tiny worlds. For we
can be fooled into thinking
that our lives are passed in

political entities such as the
state or the nation; or that
bottom-line concerns of life
have to do with economic
realities or consumer lifestyles. In truth, we live in the
midst of immensities and we
are intrinsically woven into
a great cosmic drama.
Humans and yeast are kin.
They organise themselves
chemically and biologically
in nearly indistinguishable
patterns of intelligent activity. Our kins include the living companions on Earth,
all the planets and stars and
every galaxy.
Self-expression is the
primary sacrament of the
universe. The universe, as
modern science is discovering, is celebratory at its very
core. Generosity of being,
that is evident in every supernova as it explodes scattering its riches throughout
the universe, is all around

us.
The desire to share and to
serve as a source of goodness is real, or innate basic.
We dont have to learn it. The
desire to pour out goodness
is just the way things are.
Ultimate generosity. The ultimate realm of generation
is emptiness out of which all
things came. Ultimate Generosity retains no thing.
For 400 years modern scientific knowledge has enervated, crippled, or destroyed
each and every traditional
cosmology from all the civilisations of Earth.
Allurement is that which
drew Shakespeare to write,
and draws us to his writings,
and drew Stephen Hawking
to study the initial primeval
fireball. The whole Cosmos
is caught up in this allurement as stars are drawn into
existence by allurement, giving birth, then drawing others into existence.

Modern Cosmology teaches
that sensitivity is not a human invention but is part of
the universe. I am absorbing
the moon as I watch it and
were it not for the moon itself I would not be moved.
Brian Swimme talks of
the genetic sequence of
molecules captured remembered - by the DNA in
all cells. Re-membering is
something that the universe
does.
Bring electrons, protons
and neutrons together in
the right conditions and helium appears. Everything
in the Universe is subject to
what Swimme calls unseen
shaping.
Brian
Swimme
makes
the claim, based on recent
discoveries in science that
the human species thrives

best when at play. (Interestingly of late, Swimme
uses the word imagination rather than play as he
feels that Westerners dont
take the word play seriously enough. However, I
still think the word play
is suitable as it carries so
much meaning especially
for us Australians who love
our play). He states, in fact,
that the true habitat of the
human is adventurous play.
Play, fantasy, the imagination, and free exploration of
possibilities: these are the
central powers of the human
person.
The human species is the
youngest, freshest, most immature, newest species of all
the advanced life forms on
the planet. We have only just
arrived.

Scouts go bush
The 1st Ballan Scout Group
held a family camp in the
Wombat Forest at the end of
November.
The camp focused on teambuilding, leadership and
initiative activities for the 6
7-year-old joeys, 8 11-yearold cubs, 11 14-year-old
scouts and 15 17-year-old
venturers.
Activities included archery,
bush hut building, low rope
courses, bushwalking and
cooking up bush tucker.
Scout Koryn said: While
at camp I liked doing the
service work. Through service, the 1st Ballan Group

helped the Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre to prepare their
camp for students with special needs from a variety of
Victorian Special Schools.
The Scouts group took on
the challenges of building
bush huts for them to sleep
in one night and lighting
campfires without using
matches.

When it comes to emergencies, Moorabool is in safe

hands.
Council received a perfect
score of Best Practice for all
24 criteria in a recent audit
of compliance of its Municipal Emergency Management Plan, judged against
the Ministerial emergency
management
planning
guidelines.
To
acknowledge
the
achievement, SES Regional
Manager Stephen Warren attended the December council meeting to present Mayor
Paul Tatchell with a Certificate of Audit.

Planning Committee to ensure a plan is in place to respond to, and recover from,
emergencies.
The MMEM planning committee is convened by Moorabool Shire Council and its
membership includes representatives from Victoria
Police, CFA, SES, VicRoads,
DEPI, Ambulance Victoria,
Red Cross, DHS and the Water Authorities
To test a shires preparedness level, an audit of the
MEMP is conducted by a
regional panel of experts
consisting of representatives
from VicSES, Victoria Police
and Department of Human
Services. The audit process
tests the validity of the plan

and the three year planning
process undertaken in its
development.
Seven of the questions
judged best practice were legislative requirements while
other measures assessed the
characteristics of the Shire,
preparation and maintenance of a plan, appointed
Council officers, meeting
of the Emergency Management Planning Committee,
frequency and records, contact directory maintenance,
presentation to Council,
distribution of amendments,
linkages to other plans and
that a community emergency risk assessment has been
undertaken.
Detailed sub plans for emergencies including flood,
animal management, and
recovery are also supplied to
the audit panel to substantiate the planning.

$27,000 funding from Moorabool Shire Council over the
next three years.
The Strawberries and Cherries Festival will receive
$5000 per financial year and
the Harvest Festival will
receive $4000 over the same
timeframe under a Moorabool Shire Council existing
major tourism event grant.

BACCHUS Marsh boy Jarryd Martin has putted his

way into the top 30 junior
Victorian golfers.
The 12-year-old became
Victorias equal 27th best
junior primary school golfer
on December 1 at the Victorian Primary School Golf
Championships.
Martin competed for St Bernards Primary School at a
local nine-hole competition
at the Bacchus Marsh Golf
Club in November, winning
with a score of 40 and earning him a spot in one of 14
regional qualifiers.
The Grade 6 student then

went on to compete at Medway Golf Club in Braybrook
where he scored another 40
and qualified for the Victorian finals.
Of the 3303 students who
took part in primary school
qualifying events throughout Victoria, the top 110 descended on Kooringal Golf
Club last week to challenge
for the Primary School State
Final title over 18 holes.

checked and agreed by two major
recreation companies show that
it can be profitable with a catchment of 25,000 people, and we
will continue to work towards it.
Fortunately all the East Moorabool Councillors, have been very
supportive and continue to work
with us to get it done. We wait for
the new funding models from the
Federal Government and expect
to be high on their list seeing they
cut the promised money from the
previous government. It is disingenuous of the Moorabool News
to publish this story without all
the facts, and Cr Toohey has al-
monstrably under- funded; we

have over 19,000 people now and
that will double by 2041.

Dear Editor,
Meanwhile, a Bacchus Marsh resident

has appeared in court on one charge of
drug trafficking.
The 66-year-old man appeared in the
Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court on
Friday, December 5, after being found
with close to 10 pounds of cannabis in
his vehicle.
On Tuesday, February 4, the accused
was seen attending a Clyde Street address in Maribyrnong, where he allegedly exchanged over $4000 for two pounds
of the illegal drug.
After returning home to Bacchus Marsh,
the man was intercepted in Gell Street,
where a total of 9.84 pounds of cannabis
was found in the boot of his vehicle, the
court heard. The offenders defence lawyer stated that his client had made full
omissions, and that there was no intention for further sale of the drug, as the
defendant only used it to treat a number
of mental and physical health issues.
However without any appropriate evidence to support the statement, the case
was adjourned until mid-January.

serious damage in the form of
a crack; the maintenance costs
are horrendous due to the aged
technology.
Comparing an aquatic centre
in Wagga with one in Bacchus
Marsh is mischievous at best.
The scale of the Wagga facility
mirrors the population, and the
yearly cost quoted includes the
loan repayments.
Pools are predominately funded
by both State and Federal funding and the running costs are absorbed by the ratepayer. The commercial reality is you cant build
this type of infrastructure on the
back of the rate payer, in fact you
cant build towns on the back of
the ratepayer.
All sides of the Parliamentary

circus should hang their heads in
shame including our own. Bacchus Marsh has been treated with
contempt in terms of sensible
infrastructural investment. The
concentrated growth in Bacchus
Marsh defies the State average
when you consider the diversity
of this Shire.
There needs to be a united front,

and a community consensus that
separates the wants and needs;
the road map needs to be clear
and concise; we need to reject the
Council becoming a departmentalised version of State and Federal over-governance.
I am disappointed in the article

in the paper; it is divisive, unsubstantiated, and ignorant to the
serious infrastructural shortfall
in Bacchus Marsh.

Avenue took on ladder leaders Ocean Grove, keen to
be competitive against very
good opposition. Scores
were virtually level at the tea
break with Avenue matching
Ocean Grove shot for shot.
After the break Ocean Grove
took the lead, however Avenue were not prepared to lie
down with Andrew Myers
rink getting the advantage
over their opponents. The
game was in the balance
up until the final few ends,
however Avenue could not
pull off an unexpected win.

Division 3 - journeyed to
Victoria in what has not been
a happy hunting ground
in recent times, however
Avenue through playing
consistent bowls were able
to outlast their opponents,
winning three of the four
rinks.
Division 5 - hosted Sebastopol in what some thought

would be an easy game for
the home side, given the
opposition was mid ladder
and Avenue in second place,
however as often happens in
bowls this is not the way the
game turned out.

Division 8 - travelled to
Webbcona and played on a
tricky synthetic green. It has
previously been reported
that this team experiences
the most changes of any
Avenue team, however the
team still manages to keep
winning. Led by strong
performances from Oscar
Mauffs side (21 shots up) and
Octogenarian Stan Cummings rink (15 shots up)
and Ron Millingtons rink (3
shots up). Avenue were able
to secure wins in three of the
four rinks, (with the fourth
rink tied) in another impressive display.

Little Athletics
Unfortunately due to the inclement weather, Little Athletics
was cancelled last Saturday. Little Aths will return with a
twilight meet to be held on Friday evening, commencing at
5.15pm. A special visit from Santa during the meet, is sure to
be a highlight for the members.
Bacchus Marsh will have 17 teams representing the Centre
at the State Relay Championships to be held at Lakeside
Stadium on Saturday. Athletes will be competing up against
the best teams from across the state.
Registrations are now open for the following State Events:

Saturday 31 January and Sunday 1 February, 2015 at Moe.
Western Metro Region Track & Field Championships
Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 February, 2015 at Werribee.

Darley Cricket Club

Results
Senior Coach Terry Moloney was beaming as Darley recorded five wins from
the six matches due to finish
over the weekend with just
the Under 14s accepting a
draw after being washed out
on Saturday morning.
The First XI returned to Ballarat High School needing
just 6 wickets to finish off
Coronet Citys second innings, who resumed at 4/39
and still requiring 97 runs
to make Darley bat again.
Ryan Ali struck early with
the home side at 5/45 there
appeared to be no resistance
with steady wickets falling
up until the tenth wicket,
which lasted for 34 runs and
at one point looked like forcing the Darley top order to
pad up again, however Coronet City were bowled out
for 122 giving the team an
innings and 14 run outright
victory.
The Second XI could not
get on Darley Park at all on
Saturday, but enjoyed the
reward of obtaining a first
innings result from the week
before.
The Third XI had the toughest task of all, after declaring
on 342 last week, Coronet
City were well positioned
when they resumed on
1/116, and continued to bat
well requiring just 80 runs
with 6 wickets in hand at
the tea break. Youngster
Daniel Hynes struck with
two quick wickets after tea
and the game turned back
in Darleys favour as Hynes
4/88 and skipper Beau Jamieson 3/55 finished off the
home side for 315.
The Fourth XI declared
their innings closed before
the start of play at 2/109 (in
reply to 91), however slow
but solid batting by Coronet
City made getting wickets
difficult for the home side.
After tea the wickets came
but so did the runs, and Coronet took the unusual step
of declaring at 7/130, giving
Darley the opportunity for
an outright result if they
could chase down 113 runs
in 10 overs. Ben Gould was
the pick of the bowlers with
3/54 on day two, whilst big
hitting from Darren Hynes

(22) including a monster six
wasnt enough to bring home
an outright win, the home
side finishing on 3/58cc at
stumps but very happy with
their first win of the season.
Juniors
Under 16 continued their

bye round whilst Under 16
Blue returned to Russell
Square to defend their 200
day one total. The Blues were
also seeking their first win
for the season, and toiled
hard with the ball all morning. The young side worked
well as a team and are learning fast, managing to secure
their first victory of the season bowling out East Ballarat for 168 in the last over.
The Under 14s were unfortunately not able to get any
play underway on Saturday
morning following a very
evenly poised day one total
of 5/78 and will share the
points with Wendouree who
were due to resume on 5/76.
The Under 12 Darley Roar
hosted Ballan, and are in a
great position after day one
finishing on 1/137 in reply
to Ballans 4/64. Ryan Densley had a day of it with 23* a
wicket and a run out, whilst
Will Johnson 27* and 1 wicket, and James Martindale 25*
batted extremely well.
Darley Pride have a lead
of 22 runs when they resume on 3/63, but will do so
with two less wickets after
Melton South finished on
1/41. Maintaining the lead
but keeping wickets in hand
will ensure yet another Darley win, whilst we also look
forward to a great result
from the Darley Cubs game
against the new Eynesbury
outfit.

on Mt Clear, Under 16 Blue
host Ballan, the Under 14s
