Director of Nalco industries
Steve Donovan
Dear Steve:
I am writing to express my strong interest in the summer 2015 Technical Sales Internship. I was informed of
this opportunity at the PSU Fall Career Fair. When I decided I wanted to pursue an internship in industrial
engineering, naturally the first place I looked was my favorite company Nalco Industries. With a growing
interest for businesses to be greener, Nalco clarifies water, conserve energy, prevent pollution, separate liquids
from solids, and prevent corrosion in cooling systems and boilers. As someone with family who lives over the
Marcellus Shale Deposits, it refreshing to see companies aiding my loved ones.
I am a Penn State student Industrial Engineering. I have taken one I.E courses so far, with five scheduled to be
completed before the summer. The one class is an engineering finances course. In the courses I have taken, I
have learned about the engineering Economy Principles and methods for analyzing the economic feasibility of
technical alternatives leading to a decision or recommendation. As someone applying for the sales positon, I
fully understand the need to have customers invest and purchase your products. Courses later to follow are
manufacturing, statistics and management course, all of which contribute to becoming a better technical
salesman.
I have had leadership experience and possess the ability to learn quickly. I believe the knowledge I already have
in the engineering as well as my experience interviewing potential job candidates and training new employees
would make me a very valuable addition to the technical sales of Nalco Industries. For the last Three years I
have been a part of a Sales team at our countys leading Garden Nursery. The last two years my sales team and I
have broken past store records for sales. Other than Nursery Sales I have increase philanthropy funds for my
fraternity by contacting local businesses and attracting more students to events.
Through this letter, I hope to show you that I have foundational knowledge to work as an industrial engineer to
be a technical sale intern. I have attached a resume for your review, which outlines my academic and
extracurricular pursuits. I hope you agree that my qualifications seem to be a match for this internship. I would
greatly appreciate if we could sit down and talk about any potential possibilities for job opportunities. My phone
number is 484-680-6562, and I can also be reached at my email Midisanto93@gmail.com.
I look forward to speaking with you. Thank you for your consideration.
Best Regards,
Matt DiSanto

"Be good, and if you can't be good, be safe." Your company develops, manufactures, and distributes protective

Memorandum
To: Professor Leslie Mateer
From: Matt DiSanto
Subject: Analysis of Cover Letters and Resumes
Date: 9/26/2014
The purpose of this memo is to provide information and context for the job opportunities provided by Nalco
Industries, a subsidiary of Ecolab, and MSA, the safety company. I will also specify details in my resumes and
cover letters to show what makes them different and why they will help me get the job. The document is
organized into three different sections. The first section will be the Audience Analysis, where I explain the
companies I am applying for and their background. The second section will be the job description where I
explain the jobs offered and why I am a good fit. The last section will be a Rhetorical Analysis on my resumes
and cover letters.
Audience Analysis
Nalco Industries Technical Sales Engineer
Nalco Industries, a subsidiary of Eco Lab is one of the largest water sanitation companies on the planet. They
provided fuel additives, oilfield chemicals, and flow assurance services to energy companies. The Company
specializes in boilers and water treatment products. The company has many different offices spreading across
the US allowing for most employees to pick where they live. The company has been looking to hire recently
now that the 3D TRASAR technology system (boiling, cooling, and membrane technology) which helps
customers to conserve water has been beating all competitor products. My confidence, optimism, sales
experience and engineering background fits in perfectly with this company.
MSA: the Safety Company Plant Operations Co-op
MSA, the safety company is the leading provider for air-purifying respirators, gas detectors, and head protection
gear, all sold under the MSA Safety Works brand. The Company specializes in Fire Safety equipment, used by
almost every firefighter in the nation. The Company is known to be very friendly with the CEO knowing most
of the interns. The Company is looking to open a third plant outside Pittsburgh to develop a new products and
increase production. This is due to the closing of their ballistic helmet division production line which was sold
in order to raise money to hire more employees and research new products. My leadership experiences as my
house manger closely relate to some issues that the Plant Operations Co-op would deal with, making this a
perfect fit.
Job Description
Nalco Industries Technical Sales Engineer
The job offered at Nalco Industries is a Technical Sales Job. The job would entail that I would complete a
couple weeks of paid training to learn about their products and manufacturing processes. I would travel weekly
to other factories, and work plants examining different devices such as boilers, assembly lines, and engines.
After examining the machinery, I would recommend products that Nalco industries produces and attempt to
make sales with a team of different specialist such as accountants and electricians to assist in the sale.
MSA: the Safety Company Plant Operations Co-op
The job offered at MSA is for Production Supervisor. The job entails hands-on experience within MSAs
Cranberry Facility, specifically in the Custom Products area. The Custom Products group develops unique gas
detection solutions when standard products are not capable of meeting customer requirements. Custom
Products is a standalone organization; engineering, supply chain, and production are co-located working very
closely together on each project. The Co-ops will work in teams with senior engineers of the course of six
months on many different projects which includes, testing, production, and distribution of products.
Rhetorical Analysis

Nalco Industries Technical Sales Engineer

Resume #1
In order to customize my resume in order to fit the needs for the Technical Sales internship at Nalco, I had to
rearrange my resume to showcase my sales skills, and sales experience. The resume sates the objective which
explicitly explains that I am looking for the Technical Sales Internships for the summer of 2015. I purposely
quantify as much data as I can to relate to sales. I added a bullet about breaking a sales record at work to
emphasize that not only do I have experience but I have talent as well. I put my sales job as my first point to
show emphasis on that experience.
Cover Letter #1
The purpose of this cover letter was to let the director of Nalco Industries know of my interest in the Technical
Sales Position. I let him know I have personal connection to Nalco by explaining how their products have been
helping my family immensely. I do this to appeal to his emotional side, and show I have interest in the company
succeeding. I go on to explain my course load to let him know that I am capable of the new hire training, and
that I have prior knowledge before the training. My last big point in the letter is related to my sales experience,
where I explain my teams record breaking sales weekends at Main Line Gardens. I end the letter letting him
know I want an interview and give him multiple ways to contact me.
MSA: the Safety Company Plant Operations Co-op
Resume #2
For the most part of my resume for MSA the safety company is very similar to my first one, but I alter it so it
appeals more towards a management job rather than a sales job. I take away some of the quantified info but
alter to sound more like I managed than I sold. I put Engineering design class as my first bullet point because it
relates more to the Plant Operations internship more than the Nursery Salesman job. I still keep some
quantifiable data on their but I replaced a lot of action verbs with, instructed, taught and coached.
Cover letter #2
The purpose of the MSA the safety company cover letter is inform the director of my interest in working for
their company. I start off by letting them know that their products have impacted my life in a large way. This
shows I have interest in the company succeeding. I have kept a decent amount of the information the same
except I talk about my experience as a house manager to show I have operations experience. I use an example
from a device that they would have in their factory to let them know my familiarity with the device. I end the
letter with a thank you and a request for an interview with my information so there is no confusion towards the
next step in the hiring process.
