Artist Residency Facilities Specialist


Part-time, up to 30-hrs/week (includes employer paid health benefits)

Montalvo Arts Center is seeking a skilled and energetic new team member for our international Lucas
Artists Residency Program. Reporting to the Residency Director, this position is a Jack-of-all-trades
general maintenance specialist, responsible for the daily operations and upkeep of the residency complex
including the grounds, equipment and buildings, and support for resident artists and various related
programs.
Built in 1912, Villa Montalvo was the country home of Senator James Duval Phelan. Opened in 1939 as a park
and center for the arts, today the Lucas Artists Program hosts more than 60 artists per year from around
the world to spend time on our 175 acre property exploring their creative practice.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Repair and maintain residency grounds, studios, offices and other areas including gallery and
storage areas.
Set up and maintain studio equipment and appliances, including computers/printers.
Basic carpentry repairs. Painting, both interior and exterior.
Maintain adequate lighting throughout the residency pathways.
Basic utility maintenance, and become familiar with all utility routing and cut-offs.
Conduct regular studio inspections and promptly prepare vacant units for re-occupancy.
Adheres to day-to-day operational policies and procedures. Completes daily work logs.
Serves as a member of the safety and emergency response team. Makes decisions and
communicates with users of the facility and emergency personnel in an emergency situation.
Participate in emergency standby schedule for evenings, weekends and holidays.
Provide support for Artistic Program and Events as needed.
Occasional janitorial duties may include leaf blowing, raking, power washing, transport trash and
waste to disposal area, and related duties. May assist in custodial work including cleaning commons
areas, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, windows, etc.
Maintains a professional demeanor and generates positive working relationships with artists,
guests, vendors, staff and volunteers.
Perform other duties as required.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

Two or more years of experience in general maintenance and repair.


An interest in working in a creative environment.
Basic carpentry and electrical skills.
Ability to prioritize tasks and manage tight time deadlines.
Cooperative, positive, patient, flexible and willing to work with others.
Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, under direct or indirect supervision.
Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Bilingual Spanish-English
a plus.
Valid CA drivers license and clean driving record required. Must have reliable transportation.
Continued
CPR/First Aid certification required within 60-days of hire.

knowledge of art handling/installation; and/or experience in electrical repairs to appliances, circuits
and fixtures.

Working Conditions & Physical Tasks:

Job functions performed both indoors and outdoors. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is
regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle,
or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop,
kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift
and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision,
peripheral vision, and depth perception. Some local travel necessary; valid drivers license and access to own
vehicle required. Employee will operate/drive a golf cart on hilly terrain. Position requires regular
evening/weekend availability. Background check required.
Salary: $16-17 per hour, non-exempt, DOE. This position is eligible for employee health benefits including
medical, dental, vision, 401K retirement plan, as well as pro-rated vacation, sick and holiday time.
