Technical Photography is a course that will introduce students to a variety of professional opportunities in photography and
related fields through hands-on practice, workshops, demonstrations and lectures. The course will include training in color and
black and white darkroom operation, design, and equipment maintenance and will include a series of introductory and
advanced level technical workshops. These workshops will cover lighting techniques, camera formats, photography set
design, studio or on location portraiture, and digital photography. Based on availability, guest speakers from the field will
present topics relating to commercial and fine art photography. Students will also complete photographic-based work in
preparation for a group exhibition scheduled MARCH 17-APRIL 14 2006. To be shown in conjunction with the
DISTANCE/TRACE exhibit.
In general, this course is similar to a photography studio apprenticeship. Self-motivated students who perform well in this
course may use it as a reference for further work in the field of photography and studio based arts.
Costs for the course will vary somewhat depending upon the scope of individual student projects. Estimate $250.00.
**Each student should have an automatic (with manual override) or manual 35mm camera.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS-EVALUATION CRITERIA:
EVALUATION CRITERIA: -Simplicity is essential for integrity & elegance.
Evaluation will be based on attendance, participation in class workshops, critiques, presentations and class assignments.
Students are required to apply practical applications of theories learned in class through darkroom production time, image
production and will also complete production reviews (class critiques and individual meetings with instructor). All students are
required to complete the following assignments:
1. At least one print (color or black and white) for the Tech Photography Exhibit in the March 17-April 14 2006 (the exhibit print
must be exclusively prepared for this exhibit). The print might be an extension of one of the assignments.
2. Prints and critical discussions for four visual assignments.
Topics will include print interpretations on various themes culled from a list of topics discussed during class. As a group we will
determine the favored themes. Starting theme will be shoots representative of the (1) 5 senses. Sight, Sound, Touch, Taste
and Smell. Other projects are: (2) Private vs Public photos, (3) Self-reflection, (4) Power of the small
3. Quizzes on darkroom procedures, film, camera and lighting operations.
4. An audio, visual presentation on one of the following subjects chosen by the student: a single photographer's portfolio, a
photography agency group or a graphic design/advertising company's campaign work.
5. Weekly darkroom lab management and production meetings.
6. Participation and commentary in the Techphoto Forum.
Attendance: UTD students enrolled in art courses must attend the prescribed three hours of class per week. This
arrangement of scheduled time is designed to accommodate the UTD student population. Most studio courses offered by
universities require six hours of contact per week. Hence, attendance during the stipulated three hours is necessary. Also,
students need to participate outside of class time--at least those three remaining hours-if not more-in order to finish
assignments in a timely manner.
Missing more than 3 classes is grounds for failure in the course.
