5 Kindergarten Go Math Lesson

Go Math Lesson: 4.8
Objective: Students will be able to create and record all 9 sets of the fact family of 8.
Common Core Standards:
K.CC.B.4 understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to
cardinality.
K.CC.B.5Count to answer "how many?" questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line,
a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a
number from 120, count out that many objects.
K.MD.B.3 Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category
and sort the categories by count.3
K.OA.A.1 Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings2 ,
sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.
K.OA.A.2 Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g.,
by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.
K.OA.A.4 For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given
number, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a drawing or equation.

Introduction: Good Morning boys and girls! Who can tell me by raising their hand what fact
family we have been working on? Yes youre correct_____________! Everyone repeat after me:
Weve been. Working on. Creating the fact family of 8! Hmmm now Ive got a tricky
question for you Raise your hand if you can tell me how many family members we have in our
fact family of 8. ______ Thank you for the quite hand how many family members are in our fact
family of 8? __________ Excellent! You are correct there are 9 family members in our fact
family of 8. There is always one more family number then the number we are building. So raise
your hand if you can tell me how many people are in our fact family of 7 (family weve
previously worked on). ) ____________ Thanks for the quite hand! How many in our family of
7? Yes youre correct there is 8 members in our fact family of 7. I want you to turn to our
neighbor and QUITELY wisssssssper to your neighbor how many family members are in our fact
family of 8. While students do this I will be setting up the smart board lesson and turning on the
projector.

Ok 1,2,3 eyes on me. Thank you for quickly sitting in body basics! One token in the jar for that
stellar work. Before we start our interactive math lesson lets warm up our noggins with our
daily mental math problem. I had 8 turkeys on a fence and two turkeys in the field. How many
turkeys in total? Show me five if you think you know the answer. __________How many turkeys
total? Correct! I think our super smart brains are ready for some 1ST GRADE MATH! You think
we can do 1st grade math??? Me to
Core Instruction: Complete interactive board Go Math Lesson and call on students to come up
to the board. Now that we have finished our smart board lesson I want all of you to grab a white
board and marker and make a circle around the carpet.
I will play a game with students by placing a ring in the circle and dropping pompoms over the
circle. Before the game review with students if fact families can have twins (no) **While
learning how to write addition problems students and I have created body motions to write the
word problems and remember essential parts. These actions will be implemented into the
lesson*** We make a plus sign by crossing our arms and we make an equal sign by putting our
arms in two horizontal lines.
We will count how many landed inside the circle and outside the circle then we will record the
numbers as a word problem. I will explain to students that we will write the number of pompoms
in the inside of the circle first then the number of pompoms on the outside next. The pompoms
will be called turkeys to follow up with previous work with fact families and to assist students
with their seatwork. Students will take turns dropping pompoms over the circle and I will call on
a different student to tell me how to record this word problem (if they forget to tell me to write a
plus sign or equal sign I might signal with my hand motions). Once a student tells me how to
write a problem I might ask a specific student or the whole class does this look right? Students
will record each problem on their individual whiteboards.
HOLY BUCKETS! Look how many family members weve made so far. Lets count and see how
many we have. Make sure we have 8. Do we have them all thumbs up if yes thumbs down if no.
____________ do we have them all? Yes ________ youre right because we have 9 problems
recorded.
****Explain Seatwork
Independent Work:
*****At this time I will pull small groups by like ability to continue working on shake and spill
and building the fact family of 8.
Students will be given 8 cut out square pictures of a turkey and a sheet of paper with a fence on
it. They have to create theyre favorite equation of fact family of 8 and glue down _____ turkeys
on the fence and ______ turkeys in the field. And then right the problem. Their work must be
checked and correct before they may go to math centers. The turkeys on the fence will be their
first number and the turkeys in the field are their second number.
Example student work:

5+3=8
Assessment: Throughout this lesson I will be able to assess students in a multitude of ways such
as:
Small group participation and understanding
Independent work
Temperature checks
Answers during whole group instruction
