Welcome to Keystroke Magazine. This article defines the Cisco IOS Keystroke
Shortcuts and cable connections to create a Putty to Cisco Console Session.

In the following examples do not include the quotes.
1. Cisco cable will have an RJ45 jack on one end and a 9 pin "D" Type
serial connector at the other.
2. The serial connector connects to you laptop serial port. If you don't
have one Purchase a usb to serial adapter.
3. Plug in the RJ45 connector of the cisco serial cable to console (cons0)
port in the rear of the cisco device labeled "console".
4. Go to Device manager
Left Click
"Start"
Right click
"My Computer"
Left Click
"Properties"
Left Click
"Hardware Tab"
Left Click
"Device Manager"
Scroll to
"Ports"
Left Click
"[+] Ports
|_____USB Serial Port (COM#)
your system assignx a COM # where the "#" is in the above example.
Write down that COM #
5. Setting up Putty or Tera Term
6. Set putty, or tera term up with the following settings:
a. under "Basic Options..." Select serial
b. @ Serial Line: Type "COM#" whatever you COM# is
c. In the "Category" box on the Left Select "Serial"
d. Speed: 9600
e. Data bits: 8
f. stop bits: 1
g. Parity: none
h. flow control:none
i. Left Click "Open"

If the following comes up

Then you type the following without the quotes.
"enable"
Router>enable

{You are now in "privileged exec mode" this line

is not a screen out put}

The above means the router is ready for you to begin configurations
low level configs or start global configuration
