twenty-first, which will help the Nazis, not only fight against the Partisans and the
Cetniks, but it will also have the opportunity to implement the joint anti-Jewish
extermination ideology of the Nazis and the Muslim Brothers, as they ended up
weaving their common hatred toward the Jewish people into an operational idea and
plan of action, which they started to implement in the Ustasha camps of extermination.
THE MUSLIM CONNECTION

The mufti went from place to place in the large Muslim agglomerations of Bosnia,
especially the cities, where in 1941 the Imams of the major Muslim communities of
Sarajevo, Tuzla, Banja Luka, and Mustar had issued fatwa decrees, a sort of religious
verdicts, forbidding the Bosnian Muslims to collaborate with the Ustasha government
of NDH, which had encompassed their country under German and Italian accord.
And in 1943, when he visited all those four cities, he convinced the local religious
leadership to come out in support of the Muslim recruits, thus mobilizing some
twenty-one thousand people to serve in the Waffen-SS Division Number Thirteen,
notoriously known as the Hanjar Division, which in Turkish and Arabic means simply
dagger, as a symbol of the war itself.

a genocide against the Jewish people in the Middle East , and in Europe to aid the Axis
powers against the Allies.

Kuntzels seminal innovation is that he traced the roots of the historical collaboration
between Islam (that he called Islamism) and Nazi ideology
and practice, and why in the postwar era, when Nazism was wiped out, it was Islam
that inherited that questionable clout and raised the banner of anti-Semitism as one of
the first items on its agenda. Kuntzel also claimed that it was not the Arab-Israeli
dispute that caused this anti-Semitic trend to gain strength, but on the contrary, it has
been the radicalization of Muslim anti-Semitism, as among the Hezbollah in Lebanon;
the Hamas among the Palestinians; the Muslim Brothers and their affiliates in
Pakistan, Africa, and Asia; and then al-Qaida and its Taliban and other sister
movements, which enabled them to dominate the Islamic discourse , aggravate the
already difficult hostility to Jews and Israel, and make that conflict all the more
intractable. It is not the Middle
Eastern conflict that causes virulent Islamic anti-Semitism, claims Kuntzel, but like in
Europe, it is the overt and covert anti-Semitism that sharpens the anti-Zionist and antiIsraeli attitudes worldwide. This is the reason why at the time, when Nazism was
universally condemned in Europe, west and east, except for the Axis powers, which
stood to gain directly from it, in the Arab world it not only won currency, but it was
regarded as both the savior of the Arabs from the yoke of British colonialism, and from
Jewish settlement in Palestine, which the Arabs/ Muslims considered exclusively
theirs. Moreover, they viewed in the Nazi final solution an ideal platform and blueprint
to reverse, not only to arrest, the Zionist great strides made in Palestine, that
Haj Amin went a step further by proving himself to the Nazis as a practitioner. First of
all, he lived in Berlin throughout the war and broadcast in Arabic over shortwave to
the entire Arab world, and in other languages spoken in the Islamic world, like
Turkish, Iranian, and Urdu, to try to enlist the support of much of the Muslim world to
Hitler and his Nazi enterprise. From the muftis point of view, perhaps the summit of
his achievements was his string of
meetings with the highest German hierarchy, to persuade them to scuttle any attempt
of any deal to rescue Jews from the German claws in Europe, and to make sure that
they were sent to their execution in the Nazi death camps. In that regard, he
participated directly and heartlessly in the decimation of thousands of Jews who could
otherwise have survived that fate , not least of all by fighting their entrance into
Palestine.
It was then and there that the Islamic connection to the Nazis and the Balkans began to
burgeon, and it was then and there that the seeds of modern Muslim radicalism were
sown, whence they would spread worldwide, under different appellations, to this very
day.
Thus, Germany identified its interest as lying with the Arab world, which was the most
dedicated and vocal in its opposition to the idea of a Jewish state. In consequence,
many Arab students were invited to study in Germany, German companies took in
Arab interns, Arab political leaders were invited to attend the annual marches and
processions of the Nazi Party, and senior Arab military officers were invited to attend
maneuvers of the Wehrmacht. In Berlin an Arab Club was founded, which became a
center of propaganda for Palestine and against the Jews, and later a center for the Arab
and Muslim broadcasts under the Nazi regime during the entire extent of the war. The
Nazi Ministry of Propaganda, via its representative in Jerusalem, Dr. Franz Reichart,
maintained close relationship with the mufti, and channeled monies to Arab media and
agents.
In the years 1939 1945, his station near Berlin, which broadcast round the clock
Arabic music, Islamic programs, news about the war viewed in Nazi eyes, and an
incessant flow of German propaganda, was the most listened to in the Arab world. The
muftis involvement in the programs became predominant since he moved to Berlin
after the Baghdad fiasco in 1941 and stayed there until the final Nazi rout. In 1940, he
worded the draft of a joint German-Italian proclamation recognizing the right of Arab
countries to solve the Jewish
problem in the same fashion those two Axis powers did, and from 1942 onward, he
was involved in the permanent presence in occupied Athens of a special SS unit, which
stood ready to move to Palestine and undertake the extermination of its Jews, with
local Arab help, after the victory by Erwin Rommel in the Western Desert came to
pass, which seemed a certainty. In 1943, when Himmler initiated, both as a propaganda
measure and as a means to obtain the release of twenty thousand German POWs, an
idea that would allow the rescue of five thousand Jewish children from German
crematoria, Haj Amin, who believed in his ruthless and cruel Allah, fought that
decision tooth and nail, and succeeded in abrogating it by interceding with Himmler,
his
close friend, and so he could add to his bloody credit the gassing of those innocent
victims of the Nazi-Muslim hatred of the Jews. The blood-thirsty mufti, who hardly fit
the conduct that is expected of a cleric, did not stop there. When he got word that
Bulgaria, Romania, and Hungary consented to allow Jewish children and their
guardians to find shelter in Palestine, he wrote to the Bulgarian foreign minister and
prevailed upon him to prevent the emigration of Jewish children from his country to a
place where they would escape any supervision upon them. He suggested sending
them instead to a place like Poland, where they could be more closely watched. The
emigration permits were abolished, the kids were exterminated, and the Palestinian
hero could add another
feather to his headgear.

In the fall of 1942, Himmler asked Hitler for the green light to recruit one BosnianMuslim SS division, to deal with the Partisans and other Yugoslav dissidents, so as to
free German troops for the foundering Russian front. By Christmas of 1943, some
hundred thousand Bosnians, almost 10 percent of the total, had been killed in the war,
and a quarter million more were displaced, mainly by Cetnik Serbs. Himmler
fantasized that he could capitalize on those data to mobilize the Bosniaks, in addition
to the fact that he thought they were by nature and training very obedient to their
superiors, due to their fearlessness and eagerness to die as shahids. Himmler and his
ilk also theorized that Bosniaks, who were the
descendants of the ancient sixth century Goths, had shown their bravery in World War
I as part of the Austro-Hungarian army. Himmler thought to capture and revive that
inherited spirit in the new Bosnian SS division, in order to battle against and destroy
the growing threat posed by Tito and his awesome and successful Partisans. In
February 1943, the plan was approved by Hitler, and Himmler appointed Arthur
Phleps, the commander of the Seventh Waffen SS Division, in charge of the
recruitment process, which was unprecedented among non-Germans. Karl von
Krempler, a SS officer who was regarded as an expert on Muslim affairs, was
nominated as the actual recruiter, under Phleps orders. The Waffen SS (or armed SS
troops), which had started with three
battalions when they were founded to replace the SA that was eliminated by Hitler
when he thought that its commander threatened his own leadership of the Nazi Party,
had grown to thirty-eight divisions (most of them ethnically German, and some
notoriously manned by Latvians, Hungarians, and Bosnians), who were an armed
branch of the Nazi Party, which operated as an elite security force in the conquered
territories. They committed many war crimes and their leaders were tried in
Nuremberg after the war. Already in 1942, the Waffen SS was becoming a sort of
Foreign Legion in the German armed forces, as more and more foreigners joined in.
The Thirteenth Mountain Division, named Hanjar (dagger in Arabic), was recruited in
Croatia (which included then Bosnia as part of
the Ustasha state), Serbia, Hungary, and Romania , with the mission to battle against
the Partisans. Some of the recruits were Volksdeutsche, namely the small German
community in occupied Serbia, whom Himmler had included in the compulsory
military service that all Germans were obliged to undergo. From 1943 , as the situation
on the war fronts worsened , more foreign divisions were recruited to the Waffen SS in
France, Scandinavia, the Ukraine, and Galicia. In September 1943, as the Allies
invaded Italy and the Germans had to rush reinforcements to hold the line of defense,
recruitment of foreigners was scaled up to allow the creation of the Twenty-Fourth
Division made up of volunteers from Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, and the Ukraine.
In March 1943, the German officer
Von Krempler, accompanied by the Croatian Alija Suljak, traveled for eighteen days
through eleven Bosnian counties, making use of Islamic symbols, like green banners
sporting crescents, against Suljaks best judgment, who would have preferred the use
of Ustasha symbols. In Tuzla they met the local Muslim leadership , and in Sarajevo
they were introduced to Rais al-Alami , the chief Imam of Bosnia, without the
presence of anyone from the Ustasha authorities. Much to the dislike of the Croats,
who demanded Kremplers removal because he also recruited Muslim deserters and
Catholics from the Ustasha army, his standing in the SS permitted him to ignore those
reservations about his service and to pursue his operation. In the summer of 1943, the
Jerusalem mufti was
invited to lend his help to the recruitment of the Muslims of Bosnia, and he was flown
from Berlin to second Von Krempler in his endeavor. The main obstacle that the mufti
met in his encounter with Bosnian Muslims was the fact that back in 1941, when the
Ustasha state was founded, the Imams of Sarajevo, Tuzla, Mustar, and Banja Luka had
prohibited their followers from collaborating with the Fascist state under whose aegis
they were now placed. But using his clout as the mufti of the third holiest city in Islam,
Haj Amin, who now also boasted his close collaboration with Hitler and Himmler,
succeeded in convincing the Bosniaks to reverse their position, and to join the new
Thirteenth Waffen SS Division that was in the making, since it was a Muslim military
unit
intended to operate in the interest of Muslims. The Croat-Ustasha foreign minister,

Mladen Lorkovic, suggested that the new unit be dubbed SS Ustasha Division, so that
it be known as a Croatian, with Bosnian, Krajinan, and other contingents. Interestingly,
the head of the state, Ante Pavelic, was opposed to forming a Muslim division per se,
for fear that it might lead to Muslim demands for independence after the war, while he
regarded Bosnia as an integral part of the Ustasha state. At the end, the division was
baptized as the Thirteenth Mountain Croat Hanjar Division, in spite of the fact that
only 10 percent of its recruits were Catholic. The mufti demanded that the division be
designed to defend Bosnian Muslims and prohibited from
leaving Bosnian borders, a limitation that was later ignored by the Germans once they
obtained his blessing for its recruitment. In 1944, another SS division, Kama , was
established, probably in the wake of the steady thinning of the German ranks, due to
the rumors that Hanjar would leave Bosnia to fight for the Nazis elsewhere. In
consequence, mass desertions ensued, sometimes of entire companies with their
weapons, and Kamas new recruits were used to fill the ranks. The division in fact was
sent to occupied France for training, and at the end of 1943 to Germany, to end up in
February 1944 in Bosnia once again. It counted more than 21,000 recruits at its peak,
2,800 of whom were Christian Croats and the balance Muslims. Every battalion had its
own Muslim chaplain an Imam
and all the signal personnel were German. One battalion was made up of Kosovar and
Sanjak Muslims; it was transferred back to Kosovo in April when the Twenty-First
Albanian Waffen SS Division was created. In September 1943, when the Hanjar were
in training in Villefranche, France, one unit took German hostages, executed five of
them and rose in mutiny, arguably believing that if most of the division joined them
they could switch sides and declare their loyalty to the Allies. But under the impact of
their Imam, who claimed that they were misled, they reversed their position;
however, in the skirmishes that ensued some twenty of them were killed. As a result,
eight hundred of the recruits, mostly Christian Croats, were released as unfit for
military
service and were dispatched to Germany for labor service. Only three hundred
Catholic servicemen remained in the division when it returned to Bosnia. Those who
refused to work were sent to death camps where they perished. Himmler granted the
Iron Cross to the Imam who helped quell the mutiny. When Villefranche was liberated
from the Nazis in 1944, one of its main streets was named Avenue des Croates, and
every September 17 the city commemorates the Croat Uprising. When the Tito
government asked after the war that the name of the memorial be changed to the
Yugoslav Uprising, the French refused on the grounds that they were duty bound to
preserve the historical truth. When the division operated within Bosnia, it was told
that its mission
was to retrieve Muslim Albania from its occupiers (Italians at that time). In mid 1944,
as Titos fortunes in the war were rising, and the Nazis seemed headed to a total rout,
he announced a sweeping amnesty to all members of the division who would desert it.
Romania had, in the meantime, switched sides and joined the Red Army, which had
crossed the borders of the Balkans in their anti -German sweep throughout Eastern
Europe. On September 17, the Partisans seized Tuzla, occasioning a massive desertion
from the Ustashas Twelfth Brigade to the Partisans. On October 20, the Red Army
entered Belgrade, but the divisional Imam led a new mutiny of some one hundred
Muslims in Bosnia. In November, the division had grown half-German due to the
desertions of the Bosniaks. In May
1945 the rest of the division surrendered to the British, who incarcerated them in
Rimini, Italy, as POWs. Later in 1947, the Communist regime court-martialed some
members of the division, but few were convicted. The division passed into history and
became a remote, if unpleasant memory. For those who are fascinated or amused by
historical fortunes, ironies, improbabilities, and strange turns of event, we reserve the
tale of several odd developments. The Hanjar Division was revived during the Bosnia
War (1992 1995), and Nasser Oric was appointed its head when surrounded by the
Serbs in the Srebrenica enclave in eastern Bosnia. In 1994, all units under Orics
command were named the Eighth Operative Group, and he was
All in all, it is claimed by some estimates that at least a couple of hundred thousand
people: Serbs, Jews, Gypsies, and Croat dissidents were arrested, incarcerated, and
exterminated there. The Ustasha Police was in charge of the operation, and it
channeled its victims there from all parts of the Ustasha state: Zagreb, Sarajevo, and
smaller towns across the country.
Some Ustasha soldiers were Muslim and joined the Ustashas in order to earn more
money. At the beginning , some of them took the job innocently, but then they were
trained to be cruel to the prisoners and would be rewarded for their mistreatment of the
inmates.
For that purpose, the Nazis sent their star Desert Fox, glamorous general Erwin
Rommel, to North Africa, planning to oust the British from Suez and Egypt, cementing
the Italian position in Libya, ensuring the rule of Vichy France in North Africa, and
defending their alliance with the Arabs of the Middle East, both via direct contact with
the anti-British movements in Egypt, Iraq, and Palestine, and concocting with the
Palestinian mufti, Haj Amin al-Husseini, a detailed plan for the extermination of the
Jews of Palestine, as part of the final solution. Husseini, a close relative of Yasser
Arafat, who was later to entertain similar ambitions, moved to Berlin during the war,
met with Hitler and worked relentlessly to turn his satanic dream into reality.
