DATE: 11-09-2012
SEMESTER: VII

TOTAL: 50marks
TIME: 1 hrs

PART - A (5 X 2=10 MARKS)

1.

What is an Accumulator and Types of Valves?

Accumulator is an energy storing device.
1.DCV
A) SPOOLVALVE ---- USES LINEAR OR ROTARY SPOOL
B) POPPET VALVE --- USES CIRCULAR BALL
2.NON RETURN VALVE
3.FLOW OR SPEED CONTROL VALVE
4.PRESSURE CONTROL VALVE
5.SOLENOID VALVES

2.

Define Bearing Life with suitable formulas.

Thus defined as the number of millions of shaft revolutions that 90% of the bearings are
expected to exceed before failing.
For Ball Bearing
For Roller Bearing

3.

Explain the term Pole, Throw, Bouncing, Debouncing.

4.

What is an Induction & Synchronous Motor

Induction Motor which runs slightly slower than the supply frequency.
Synchronous Motor can rotate exactly at the supply frequency.

5.

State some Mechanical Actuation Systems

Linkages, cam, Gears Trains, Rack and Pinions, Chain & Belt Drives &Bearings

Poles no of separate circuits for a same switch.

Throws No of individual contacts for each pole.
Bouncing:
The current oscillation during open or close (mechanical contacts) is called Bounce

PART B
1 A). Explain

working of hydraulic and pneumatic system in detail

(8)

Hydraulic System

Pneumatic System

OR
B) What is Cylinder Sequencing? Explain with a suitable example

(08)

Many control system employ pneumatic (or) hydraulic cylinders as

actually elements and require a sequence of extensions and retraction
of the cylinder to occur.

2 A) i) Explain with neat sketch Process Control Valve & types of Valve Bodies

(08)

Control the fluid flow rate in a plant or system.A pressure signal is given from the controller
from the top to the Diaphragm.
Gauge Pressure = Input Pressure - Atm: Pressure

ii) Explain the types of Bearing & Bearing Selection with LOAD-SPEED
Characteristics

(08)

The function of a bearing is to guide with minimum friction and maximum accuracy the
movement of one part relative to another.
1.Journal bearings
a)Plain Journal
b)Hydro dynamic Journal
c)Solid Film
d)Boundary Layer
2.Roller & ball bearings

OR
B) Sketch and Explain the following
1. DCV
A) SPOOLVALVE ---- USES LINEAR OR ROTARY SPOOL VALVE

(16)

A spool moves horizontally within the valve body to control the flow. In fig a, the air supply is connected to port1
The port 3 is closed. The device is connected to port 2, and device is pressurized. In fig. b when the spool is
moved to the left, the air supply is cut off. Port 2 and port 3 are connected. So the air in the system connected to port
2 is allowed to go out to the atmosphere through port 3.

B) POPPET VALVE --- USES CIRCULAR BALL

2. NON RETURN VALVE

3 .PRESSURE CONTROL VALVE

There are three types of pressure control valve.
1. Pressure regulating valves.

2.

Pressure limiting valves.

3.

Pressure sequence valves.

3. i) Explain the Solid Switches & Mechanical Switches with Example

1.

Diode.

2 .Thyistors and triacs.

(08)

3 .Bipolar transistors.

4.

MOSFETs

ii) Explain the speed control of D.C Motor with open & closed Loop System
Open loop system:

(08)

Closed Loop System:

OR
B)i) Explain the switching circuit for Full & Half Step Bipolar stepper Motor

(08)

ii) Explain the types of A.C Motor & Methods of Speed Control in Detail
1. Squirrel cage induction rotor.
2. Slip ring (or) wound INDUCTION rotor

Control of A.C Motor:

1. The speed control of A.C motor is more complex than the D.C motors.
2. The speed of the A.C motor is determined by the frequency of supply.
N= 120 F/P Where, N = speed in rpm.
F = frequency
P = no. of poles.
3. Therefore the control of A.C motor is based on the variable
frequency supply.
4. The change in the frequency can be achieved by two methods.
A. using a converter and an inverter.
B. using cyclo converter.
Using a converter and an inverter:
1. The three phase A.C is rectified to D.C by a converter.
2. Then it is inverted back to A.C. again but at a frequency that can be
selected.
Cyclo converter:
1. It is used to operate slow speed motors.
2. This converts A.C at one frequency directly to A.C at another
frequency without the intermediate D.C conversion.
