Whirlegigg is the middle English word for a contraption that

Destroy, Trample, As Swiftly As She

Destroy, trample, as swiftly as she, was commissioned by the
Tredegar Town Brass Band. This dramatic, virtuoso score
contrasts episodes of visceral energy of pounding rhythms
and wild flutter tonguing and brassy angular themes with
the ominous stillness of calmer moments suused with the
unique sound of four flugel horns.

Fanfares and Love Songs

Fanfares and Love Songs was commissioned by the National
Childrens Brass Band of Great Britain for performance on 25th
July 2009. Its three movements contrast the extrovert and
lyrical qualities of the traditional brass band. The fanfare with
which the work opens involves the whole cornet section. The
second movement is reflective in mood, beginning somewhat
pensively on muted brass, and building to an emotional
climax before subsiding back to a distant pianissimo chord.
The finale is a fast dance, which with a final recapitulation of
the opening fanfare drives on to a breathless close.

Another Worlds Hell

Another Worlds Hell was commissioned in versions for
brass, wind and fanfare bands by the Socit Cantonale
des Musiques Vaudoises and the Association Cantonale des

1932 science-fiction novel Brave New World, which describes
in unusually close detail the music that is being played at a
dance. This is Dobsons interpretation of the imagined future
music that Huxley dreamed of.

Infernal Ride
Infernal Ride is mercurial and virtuosic, reflecting the mad-cap
chase of Ichabod Cranes final ride on his horse, Gunpowder,
in the story by Washington Irving, namely The Legend of

the music forward, only briefly stopping for breath. The work
closes with flourishes in rapid succession, perhaps with the
hapless Ichabod meeting his unfortunate end!

Vranjanka
Premiered on 6th November 2005, at the RNCM International
Wind Festival, Vranjanka is loosely based on the traditional
folksong ano Duo. The melody is extant in two versions,
one in 7/8 and one in 3/4. Hesketh chooses the version in
7/8 and has extended the melodic ideas of the original with
new material. The musical form of the piece is as follows; a
fairly slow introductory section where the theme is only
hinted at but never heard and a faster second section cast in
a set of variations on the folksong. These are not variations
in the traditional sense, with clearly marked beginnings and
endings, but ongoing developments of the various melodic
material in the folksong with original material growing out
along side. Vranjanka was commissioned by Timothy and
Hilary Reynish in memory of their son William.

Whirlegigg
Whirlegigg is the middle English word for a contraption that
continuously spins. A great fascination with many inventors
of the medieval period was to develop a perpetual motion
machine constantly turning and giving o energy. This idea is
particularly apt for this piece. A simple ternary structure gives
ample opportunity for both boisterous and reflective material
with gyrating accompaniment figures never far away. The
machine almost stops near the end, but finally musters one
last burst of excitement and energy to bring the work to its

A Thames Journey follows the river Thames from its origins, as

a few drops of water in Wiltshire, to the point where it meets
the open sea at Greenwich. Hess draws upon many musical
links along the Thames, such as an old Wiltshire melody,
morris dancing in Oxfordshire, boating songs from Berkshire
and street songs in London. With such rich and diverse sources
of music across several counties and centuries, this has quite
understandably become one of Hesss most popular works to

Der Aufstand
Der Aufstand (German for riot) is not a descriptive work, nor
is it solely based on the riots of 2011. It does, however, draw
on the idea of opposing forces and escalating anger. The
work falls into two contrasting sections that are linked by
a series of repeated, screaming chords. A slow build drives
the first section from a single pitch to a blazing orchestral
tutti. The second section is a fast and wild series of fanfares
and driving rhythms that ultimately cannot be sustained. In
many ways this mirrors the first. Both sections open on single
tones (Bb and E) and grow to a climax of brass and hammered
chords. The first performance took place on the last day of the
2012 Olympic Games. Der Aufstand is a noisy antithesis to the
celebratory fanfare.
