and that knowledge cannot be a substitute for self-remembering.
The proper function of our intellectual center is to describe and
classifY phenomena, although the descriptions we give to objects
are not the objects themselves. When this activiry hinders selfremembering, it is wrong work.

Men number four must limit the time they think about ideas,
because self-remembering readily disappears behind words. Harriet Beecher Stowe advised people to stop thinking, and be content
to be, and indeed, taking in the impressions about one can be
miraculous enough.
Formatory mind tries to reduce a subject to one all-embracing
statement. It desires one definition of self-remembering, as though
one's higher centers were a limited experience, but self-remembering has many facets. Taste the wine, look at the flowers, hear the
music. It is strange that it is always quite close, although it assumes
many forms. It is external consideration, non-identification,
non-

Omar Khayyam said, "One thing is certain ... and the rest is lies."
Self-remembering is the eternal truth that masterfully confronts
the eternal lie.
Mr. Ouspensky observed that we are accustomed to unreality. Mr.
Gurdjieff entitled one of his last works Life is real only then, when
"[ am. "For us and for him this means that life is real only when
one is remembering oneself.
Self-remembering has no momentum; one must make effort,
moment to moment. When the third state appears, experience it
instead of simply talking about it-it is your self, your soul,
Mendelssohn's "Song Without Words."
You cannot talk your way our, or eat your way out, or laugh your
way out, or cry your way out; but you can remember your way
out. Remember yourself a little at a time.
If you are remembering yourself and other people can't see it, then
you're remembering yourself successfully. If false personality acts
as if it is self-remembering, you are diminishing yourself.
Human nature generally does not see the obvious, which is why
esoteric truths have frequently been presented in the form offairy
tales. Fairy tales often begin with the statement, "Once upon a
time," indicating that the stories are unfolding in time, and end
with a prince and a princess (Wodd 6 and Wodd 12) living
"happily ever after," that is, in eternity-immortality.
The development of one's level of being is proportionate to the
maturity of one's king of hearts. Self-remembering must originate
in the king of hearts, because we can't rely on accidents to produce
consciousness. We all need as much help as we can get, whether
from our own efforts, the law of accident, or Influence C.
Dante Alighieri said that a tiny spark may burst into a mighty
flame. The method to use is self-remembering. Yet there is nothing
more elusive than self-remembering and we must, in our feeble
way, return to it when we can. A neutral state is not a vegetative
condition, but a state of non-attachment thaffepels imagination;
it is a state of remembering oneself. The moments we vividly
remember in our lives are the moments of self-remembering. Even
so, self-remembering has degrees; if you are traveling in a foreign
country, you may be present to hundreds of trees without remembering most of them. Where there is memory, where there is
divided attention, there is your self.
Our moments of memory constitute our lives. If one reviews one's
life, the moments one truly remembers reveal that one's higher

Feeling guilry about our good luck in having met the schoolthat, too, is not self-remembering. In right order, one is not
affected by anything outside of oneself. It is curious that what we
must call self-study is not actually the study of one's self, but the
study of the machine's peculiarities. What one observes is not
one's self, whether it is positive or negative. What observes is one's
self.
Awakening is an emotional process and friction must be emotional. The suffering we experience must be real because the states we
create are real. It isn't pleasant to verifYthis, and yet it is a blessing.
Friction can seem like a curse until we begin to realize the great
idea behind it. What is that great idea? Immortality. Can anything
compare with that?
