SAVE FUEL

In your car:
1. Don't speed. When you drive at more than 90 kilometres an hour, your fuel
efficiency decreases.
Cars are most fuel efficient when operating between 60 and 70 kilometres per
hour.
2. Plan your route. Combine errands and try to avoid heavy traffic areas and
road construction to
save fuel.
3. Watch your weight. Remove unnecessary items from your car. An extra 100
pounds can
increase your fuel and usage costs by two per cent.
4. Turn it off. Shut off/unplug all power-sucking accessories, such as phone
chargers, air
conditioning and the radio, before turning off your car. This decreases the
engine load for the next
time you start your vehicle, and will use less gas.
5. Reduce idling. Any more than 10 seconds of idling uses more fuel than
restarting the engine. If
you're not stopped in traffic, turn off your engine.
6. Check your tire pressure. Under-inflated tires reduce fuel efficiency. If every
light-duty vehicle in
Canada had properly inflated tires, we could save a total of about 643 million
litres of fuel a year.
7. Make the most of your transmission. For manual transmissions, shift gently
but quickly into
higher gears, where your engine works more efficiently and uses less fuel. For
automatic
transmissions, use the overdrive gear at high speed to reduce your engine's
workload, which saves
fuel and cuts down on engine wear.
8. Get regular tune-ups. Ensuring your car is in top shape will reduce the
likelihood of repairs, and
will save fuel.
9. Use other options. Carpool, walk, bike or take public transit.
10. Work from home. Talk to your employer about working from home one day
a week, or more if
possible, to help reduce your use of gasoline.
11. Don't be an aggressive driver. Hard breaking increases fuel consumption by
up to 40 per cent.
12. When driving on the highway, use cruise control. This saves on fuel by
keeping your speed constant.

49 Ways of Saving Water

1. Never put water down the drain when there may be another use for it such as
watering a plant or garden, or cleaning.
2. Verify that your home is leak-free, because many homes have hidden water leaks.
Read your water meter before and
after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read
exactly the same, there is a leak.
3. Repair dripping taps by replacing washers. If your tap is dripping at the rate of
one drop per second, you can expect to
waste 2,700 gallons per year which will add to the cost of water and sewer utilities,
or strain your septic system.
4. Check for toilet tank leaks by adding food colouring to the tank. If the toilet is
leaking, colour will appear within 30
minutes. Check the toilet for worn out, corroded or bent parts. Most replacement
parts are inexpensive, readily available
and easily installed. (Flush as soon as test is done, since food colouring may stain
tank.)
5. Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily. Dispose of tissues, insects and other such
waste in the rubbish bin rather than the
toilet.
6. Take shorter showers. Replace you showerhead with an ultra-low-flow version.
Some units are available that allow you
to cut off the flow without adjusting the water temperature knobs.
7. Use the minimum amount of water needed for a bath by closing the drain first
and filling the bath only 1/3 full. Stopper
bath before turning water. The initial burst of cold water can be warmed by
adding hot water later.
8. Don't let water run while shaving or washing your face. Brush your teeth first
while waiting for water to get hot, then wash
or shave after filling the basin.
9. Retrofit all wasteful household taps by installing aerators with flow restrictors.
10. Operate automatic dishwashers and clothes washers only when they are fully
loaded or properly set the water level for
the size of load you are using.
11. When washing dishes by hand, fill one sink or basin with soapy water. Quickly
rinse under a slow-moving stream from the
tap.
12. Store drinking water in the refrigerator rather than letting the tap run every
time you want a cool glass of water.
13. Do not use running water to thaw meat or other frozen foods. Defrost food
overnight in the refrigerator or by using the
defrost setting on your microwave.
14. Kitchen sink disposals require lots of water to operate properly. Start a compost
pile as an alternate method of disposing
food waste instead of using a garbage disposal. Garbage disposals also can add
50% to the volume of solids in a septic
tank that can lead to malfunctions and maintenance problems.
15. Consider installing an instant water heater on your kitchen sink so you don't
have to let the water run while it heats up.
This will reduce heating costs for your household.

16. Insulate your water pipes. You'll get hot water faster plus avoid wasting water
while it heats up.
17. Never install a water-to-air heat pump or air-conditioning system. Air-to-air
models are just as efficient and do not waste
water.
18. Install water softening systems only when necessary. Save water and salt by
running the minimum amount of regenerations
necessary to maintain water softness. Turn softeners off while on vacation.
19. Check your pump. If you have a well at your home, listen to see if the pump kicks
on and off while the water is not in use.
If it does, you have a leak.
20. When adjusting water temperatures, instead of turning water flow up, try
turning it down. If the water is too hot or cold,
turn the offender down rather than increasing water flow to balance the
temperatures.
21. If the toilet flush handle frequently sticks in the flush position, letting water run
constantly, replace or adjust it
Saving Water Outdoors
22. Don't over-water your lawn. As a general rule, lawns only need watering every 5
to 7 days in the summer and every 10 to
14 days in the winter. A hearty rain eliminates the need for watering for as long as
two weeks.
23. Water lawns during the early morning hours when temperatures and wind
speed are the lowest. This reduces losses from evaporation.
24. Don't water your street, driveway or sidewalk. Position your sprinklers so that
your water lands on the lawn and shrubs
... not the paved areas.
25. Install sprinklers that are the most water-efficient for each use. Micro and drip
irrigation and soaker hoses are examples
of water-efficient methods of irrigation.
26. Regularly check sprinkler systems and timing devices to be sure they are
operating properly. It is now the law that
"anyone who purchases and installs an automatic lawn sprinkler system MUST
install a rain sensor device or switch which
will override the irrigation cycle of the sprinkler system when adequate rainfall has
occurred." To retrofit your existing
system, contact an irrigation professional for more information.
27. Raise the lawn mower blade to at least three inches. A lawn cut higher
encourages grass roots to grow deeper, shades the
root system and holds soil moisture better than a closely-clipped lawn.
28. Avoid over-fertilising your lawn. The application of fertilisers increases the need
for water. Apply fertilisers that contain
slow-release, water-insoluble forms of nitrogen.
29. Mulch to retain moisture in the soil. Mulching also helps to control weeds that
compete with pants for water.
30. Plant native and/or drought-tolerant grasses, ground covers, shrubs and trees.
Once established, they do not need to be
watered as frequently and they usually will survive a dry period without any
watering. Group plans together based on
similar water needs.
31. Do not hose down your driveway or sidewalk. Use a broom to clean leaves and
other debris from these areas. Using a
hose to clean a driveway can waste hundreds of gallons of water.

32. Outfit your hose with a shut-off nozzle that can be adjusted down to fine spray
so that water flows only as needed. When
finished, "Turn it Off" at the tap instead of at the nozzle to avoid leaks.
33. Use hose washers between spigots and water hoses to eliminate leaks.
34. Do not leave sprinklers or hoses unattended. Your garden hoses can pour out
600 gallons or more in only a few hours, so
don't leave the sprinkler running all day. Use a kitchen timer to remind yourself to
turn it off.
35. Check all hoses, connectors and spigots regularly.
36. Consider using a commercial car wash that recycles water. If you wash your
own car, park on the grass to do so.
37. Avoid the installation of ornamental water features (such as fountains) unless
the water is recycled. Locate where there
are mineral losses due to evaporation and wind drift.
38. If you have a swimming pool, consider a new water-saving pool filter. A single
backflushing with a traditional filter uses
from 180 to 250 gallons or more of water.
General Water Saving Tips
39. Create an awareness of the need for water conservation among your children.
Avoid the purchase of recreational water
toys that require a constant stream of water.
40. Be aware of and follow all water conservation and water shortage rules and
restrictions that may be in effect in your area.
41. Encourage your employer to promote water conservation at the workplace.
Suggest that water conservation be put in the
employee orientation manual and training program.
42. Patronise businesses that practice and promote water conservation.
43. Report all significant water losses (broken pipes, open hydrants, errant
sprinklers, abandoned free-flowing wells, etc.) to
the property owner, local authorities or your Water Management District.
44. Encourage your school system and local government to help develop and
promote a water conservation ethic among
children and adults.
45. Support projects that will lead to an increased use of reclaimed waste water for
irrigation and other uses.
46. Support efforts and programs to create a concern for water conservation among
tourists and visitors to our state. Make
sure your visitors understand the need for, and benefits of, water conservation.
47. Encourage your friends and neighbours to be part of a water conscious
community. Promote water conservation in
community newsletters, on bulletin boards and by example.
48. Conserve water because it is the right thing to do. Don't waste water just because
someone else is footing the bill such as
when you are staying at a hotel.
49. Try to do one thing each day that will result in a savings of water. Don't worry
if the savings is minimal. Every drop
counts. And every person can make a difference. So tell your friends, neighbours
and co-workers to "Turn it Off" and "Keep it Off".

Different Types of Pollution and Methods of Control

APRIL 21, 2014 BY PRIYAVRAT SHARMA

The intermixing of contaminants into the natural resources leading to their

degradation is known as pollution. The problem of pollution has always been a
major issue all around the globe and the need for proper steps to prevent and
overcome it has been increasing and has also found some voices in the recent
times. The ever increasing rate of pollution has caused severe damage to the
ecosystems as can be seen from the rising global warming. Also, the pollution
enhances human diseases and the death rates of various animals and plants
leading to an imbalance in their population. The growing rate of industries
and a higher rate of consumption of fossil fuels gives rise to this undesirable
pollution. Constant efforts to bring about the decrement of this pollution so as
to ensure a healthy environment is the need of the hour.
Pollution is a concept whose proper understanding requires the understanding
of many other related concepts. While studying about pollution, we are going
to deal with a number of terms related to chemistry. Different gases, minerals
and compounds will form an active part of our discussion about pollution.
Hence it would be a good idea to have some basic knowledge about the
concepts of chemistry which will aid our study of the different types of pollution.
This great course about the basics of chemistrywill help you in getting familiar
with the basic concepts and will enable you to understand the things being
discussed here in a better way.
Here we are going to discuss the different types of pollution and how all these
types differ from one another. We will study all these factors in detail and will
also study about how we can prevent the pollution of the natural resources. We
will try and understand how the pollution is caused and this in turn will help
us in understanding how this pollution can be prevented and controlled.

Air Pollution :
Air pollution is the contamination of natural air by mixing up of it with many
different contaminating particles including chemicals, harmful fumes etc. This
type of pollution always behaves as a potential risk, leading to respiratory

infections, heart diseases, strokes etc. Other health effects due to air pollution
include asthma and cardiac conditions.
The pollutants for air pollution are divided into two categories. The first type of
pollutants known as primary pollutants are those which are produced from a
certain process like the smoke emitted from the vehicles. The second type of
pollutants are termed as the secondary pollutants and these are the ones which
are generated due to the reaction of primary pollutants with natural air.
Different pollutants affect the air in different forms. Like the reaction of sulfur
oxides and nitrogen oxides results in the production of acid rain. The vehicles,
from their exhaust systems, give out the component of carbon monoxide which
has an adverse effect on the atmosphere. The ground level ozone which is the
basis of certain regions of stratosphere can also act as an air pollutant which
in high concentrations aids in the generation of smog. Coal is another source
which contaminates the air. If the burning coal gets mixed up with the smoke
from some other sources, it results in the generation of smog which is also a
major type of air pollution.
Lack of ventilation inside the houses can also lead to health issues resulting
from air pollution. For example, the pesticides and other chemicals, brought
into use extensively in the homes, are required to be properly exhausted from
the house, but this cannot be achieved as a result of improper ventilation. The
same is inhaled by the inhabitants and thus leads to health issues. Air
pollution is present everywhere and it is very important to protect yourself from
the ill effects of this pollution and to remain healthy. Thiscourse about the 5
pillars of optimal health will give you some great and highly useful
information about living a healthy and happy life.

Water Pollution :
It is defined as the constant addition of pollutants to the water bodies
resulting in contamination of the water. This makes the concerned water
unfavorable for the use for both humans and commercially and is left as a
waste only. The contaminated water when mixed with a bigger water body
results in the adverse impact on the aquatic species. The major role played in
the contamination of water is by the various industrial chemicals and wastes
that are thrown into the water body without adequate treatment and thus
contaminating the water. The high temperature fluids adversely affect the
thermal state of the water and lead to the discoloration of natural clean
water.
The list of the contaminants of water also includes many other particles such as
detergents being generated by the industries and also from the households
which get readily mixed with the water bodies. Testing the extent of water
pollution can be done in a number of ways including the physical testing
which means to analyze the temperature, solids, concentration and other
factors for a particular sample of water. You can check out this well-written
blog post about the types of water pollution to get more information about this
highly dangerous type of pollution.

Soil Pollution :
Basically, the soil pollution refers to the mixing up of soil with the materials
which are potent enough to affect the natural soil when mixed up with it in
more than adequate proportions. The addition of the contaminated particles
to soil happens both due to the human and natural activities in which the
former plays a major part.
The most important factor leading to soil pollution is the ever increasing
number of construction sites in todays world. The harmful chemicals which are
used in these construction activities harm the environment both during the
construction and also after the construction has been completed.
The other factors leading to soil contamination include the landfill and
illegal dumping that is usually carried out in the outskirts of urban areas due
to which the waste decomposed intermixes with the nutrients present in the soil
in the initial phases and leads to its depletion.
The contaminated soil directly affects the human health either through the
direct contact with it or by the inhalation of harmful soil contaminants which
are vaporized. For example, the nitrate particles are highly dangerous to be
dumped under the soil cover and thus are first mixed up with the ammonia to
reduce their impact, but even after this the resultant mixture leads to highly
dangerous health hazards. It is very important to stay protected from these
hazards and to remain healthy. This course about how to achieve the perfect
health will help you in understanding the concept of perfect health and the
important steps that need to be taken to achieve it.

Noise Pollution :
Noise pollution is the generation of sounds that are irritating and have a high
pitch as compared to the hearing capabilities of humans. The basic sources of
this sort of pollution are the machines that are extensively found in the
industries and the transportation systems. Also, the loud noise created by loud
music and other building activities can also contribute to this pollution
leading to cardiovascular effects and other undesirable health effects for the
humans. The need for preventive measures for noise pollution has always been
there and this in a way has resulted in the emergence of hybrid vehicles which
are less noisy than other contemporary vehicles.
The concept of noise pollution is a very unique one, as sound is something
which has the capability to have both good and bad effects on the health of
humans. Undesirable noises, in the form of noise pollution, can cause many
health problems, but at the same time some soothing sounds can have a
positive effect on the mental as well as physical health of the humans. Here is a
great course about the the positive effects of sound on human health, and this
course will help you in understanding how sound can be a highly positive
influence for the mind and the body if it is controlled properly.

Thermal Pollution :
The increase in the temperature of a water system by any means is termed as
thermal pollution. The basic source of this type of pollution is through making
use of water as a coolant in industries which includes the disposal of heat
generated by the industrial processes to the water and thus resulting in the
increase of temperature of this water.
The worst impact of this sort of pollution is witnessed in the aquatic systems
where the level of dissolved oxygen is readily decreased by the abrupt increase
in the waters temperature and thus harming the life of aquatic species. The
reduction in the oxygen level of the ecosystem is also witnessed due to the
reduced lifespan of the primary producers.

Pollution Control Methods :

The control of the emission of various particulates into the environment so as
to bring down the level of the pollution is termed as pollution control. The
main steps that can be followed in this regard include recycling and reusing
the products that can be used a few times so that the waste produced from them
does not deplete the environment. Also the waste water that is to be thrown into
the water bodies from the industries should be treated first to bring down its
hazardous nature which poses a threat to the aquatic natural species.
Moreover the amount of raw material that is to be used should be used in an
adequate quantity so that it results in low generation of the waste amount
which is mixed with the environmental agents later. Apart from these, proper
noise and smoke precipitators should be used to bring down the amount of
lethal smoke and noise produced to help protect the environment. Here is a
great blog post which discusses some other very effective and useful methods to
help and keep our environment clean and pollution free.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Mobile Phone Technology

by ADM2 on APRIL 5, 2013

Mobile phones have altered our way of life to an unbelievable degree. Anytime some old
member of a family applies tales regarding prior modes of communication like beepers,
postal letters and telegrams, the children of Twenty-first century feel really surprised. It
would appear that the people relevant the stories regarding telegrams fit in to a few
other planet. So, its a fact that the cellular phone technology has started a new period
on our planet, that has uprooted the old fashioned lifestyle entirely.

However, it doesnt mean this technologies has no effect on people adversely. Every thing
on the planet earth has two attributes; advantages and disadvantages. The same will
go true for the phone technologies. The technology is effective as well as
disadvantageous. In this article, the advantages will be considered towards the
disadvantages in order to obtain a accurate understanding of the effects of mobile
phones on individual life.
The Advantages of the Technologies

It is said that phones possess turned the world into a global town. The declaration
appears precisely true. Residing in one part of the world, we can talk to our family
members residing in an additional corner of the world effortlessly.

The cell phone technologies have speeded up small and big companies. The business
events around the world can communicate with one an additional in a few of mere
seconds. They can offer and determine quickly. Consequently, the business world has
been enhanced to a astonishing extent due to fraxel treatments.

Its created individuals in contact along with one an additional. In this way,
mobile phones possess urged individual conversation.

To provide a network for communication, lots of individuals are needed to handle

the duties. Hence, many jobless people have obtained good work for all of them due
to fraxel treatments.

The Disadvantages of the Technologies

The finest disadvantage of it is this technologies have impacted the natural method
of human interaction badly. Individuals stay hectic using their tissue even when
sitting in a team of other people.

There are many tales about the people who fulfilled accidents because of to keeping
focus on their own mobile phone while driving. Therefore, this is one of the greatest
disadvantages of these types of devices.

Mobile mobile phones are used by criminals to inform one another about their filthy
ideas. And, their own crime strategies are invented by using this technologies in the
majority of cases.

Mobile phones also have increased up street offences and breach of moral ideals. Lots
of immoral, so-called love tales discover their existence through the misuse of this
technology.

A few apparent hearing and brain diseases possess appeared because of to the
excessive use of these devices. Furthermore, eyesight problems are also observed
among many crazy mobile users.

Therefore, we can see which mobile phones are not only helpful, however they are also
dangerous. Nicely, it will not be wrong to say that not one of the technologies is harmful
by nature, this will depend on us whether we utilize it favorably or even adversely.
