BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
Germantown Police Chief Peter Hoell
reminded motorists on the basic steps to drive
safely last week during the one-year anniversary of a multi-car crash along Hwy. 41/45.
There are by far more motorists who do use
good driving skills than not. They drive for the
conditions, are courteous to other drivers and
generally make a good effort to drive safely
and responsibly, Hoell said in a post on the
Police Department Facebook page. But sometimes these good drivers make mistakes, mistakes which can cause a crash.
On Dec. 8,2013, multiple car crash incidents occurred in two portions of southbound
Hwy. 41/45. The first crash scene was in
Menomonee Falls over a 3.5 mile portion of the
road near Arandell Schmidt and the HarleyDavidson plants. A 63-year-old Franklin man
died in that accident.
A short time later, Germantown Police investigated crashes on Hwy. 41/45 near County Line
Road and near Lannon Road. The first report was
received of a multi-vehicle crash near County Line
Road at 12:07 a.m. Twenty vehicles were
involved in that accident and there were two nonlife threatening injuries.
Approximately 15 minutes later, police
responded to a 50-vehicle crash near Lannon

Friends of Nature
N88 W15483 Main St., Menomonee Falls
262-253-9889 SUN 9-5; M-F 9-9; SAT 9-7

Friends of Nature Celebrates 23 Years

riends of Nature recently celebrated its 23rd Anniversary.

Established by Doug & Lynn Wilde in
1991 it has grown over the years from
1,000 sq. ft. to 12,000 ft. in the recently remodeled Pilgrim Village in
Menomonee Falls. They added a second location in Slinger in 2000 and
purchased Landmark Supply in
Cedarburg in 2005.
With the remodeling of the shopping
center we also spruced up the inside of
the store, adding new carpeting, ceiling tiles and lighting This past October,
new windows and doors were installed
to enhance the overall appearance of
our storefront.
Friends of Nature prides itself in
having an extensive selection of holistic
dog and cat foods. There have been

many new foods introduced into the pet

industry over the last few years and we
try our best to pick the cream of the
crop. There is no one best food. Our
advice is to buy the best food you can
afford. Our staff is trained to help you
make a decision based on the nutritional needs and life style of your pet.
We have limited ingredient foods,
grain free foods and many brands of
frozen pet foods. We cant possibly
stock every brand of food available but
we can special order most of them and
usually have it for you in a week or
less.
Friends of Nature also has a huge
array of treats. We seek out as many
American made treats as possible.
Given the recent recalls on food and
treats it is extremely important to read

the labels to see where the items are

sourced and made.
Since Friends of Nature is a full service pet specialty store we have the feed
and supplies for every type of pet such
as birds, reptiles, fish and small furry
critters. We also carry fresh water tropical and salt water fish.
Friends of Nature is also known far
and wide as the place to go for wild
bird seed, feeders and accessories.
We have the largest variety of wild bird
seed in three counties and hundreds of
bird feeders. We also have squirrel
and wildlife food.
We have a knowledgeable and dedicated staff to help you make an
informed decision on your pet or
wildlife purchases so dont hesitate to
ask for their help.

Tip of the Week: Securely anchor your Christmas tree so it doesn't tip and fall, causing possible

...Six miles of Hwy. 41/45 in Germantown

From page 1
Road. There were 12 non-life threatening
injuries from that accident. Six additional
crashes occurred north of Lannon Road.
There were no fatalities for the crashes that
occurred in Germantown.
I remember on Dec. 8, 2013 standing
on US 41 just north of Holy Hill Road trying
to divert traffic off of US 41, Hoell stated in
his Facebook post. The wind and snow
were blowing, the icy snow was crunching
under my feet, and some of the vehicles
coming towards me were clearly driving too

fast for the conditions.

More recently, a four-vehicle crash
occurred on Hwy. 41/45 on Dec. 1, just
north of Holy Hill Road in which a 44-yearold Milwaukee man was killed.
In his Facebook post, Hoell said that six
miles of Hwy. 41/45 go through the village.
In 2013, police responded to 604 accidents. As of the end of the September 2014,
Hoell stated police responded to 450 accidents, a 10 percent increase from 2013.
Hoell noted that in Germantown Hwy.
41 and Hwy. 45 merge just north of Holy
Hill Road. Just south of Holy Hill Road, the

POLICE BLOTTER
The following report was taken

was involved in an altercation with another

Retail theft
A male subject was taken into custody for retail theft-second offense at 8:50
a.m. Nov. 28 at Fleet Farm, N96 W18200
County Line Road.
A male subject was cited for retail
theft at 12:35 p.m. Nov. 28 after stealing
hunting equipment from Fleet Farm.
A male subject fled Walmart, W190
N9855 Appleton Avenue, without paying

for a 60-inch television set Nov. 30.

road goes over a railroad track while it also

changes direction.
The high number of accidents on US 41
are primarily due to aggressive driving, inattentive driving, and poor driving skills, while
traveling in a heavily used traffic area.
Aggressive driving habits include driving too
close to other vehicles, driving too fast for
conditions, unsafe lane changes, speeding,
and road rage, Hoell stated. Inattentive
driving is another major cause of crashes
and can involve driving too close and too
fast while trying to look at cell phones or
other electronic devices. Then there is the
driver we have all witnessed, the person
with poor driving skills that appears suddenly out of nowhere and is driving too fast,
aggressively changing lanes without signaling, following too close and braking hard
behind someone driving slower than they
are.

When reached for comment last week,

Hoell stated that the village police have primary jurisdiction over the six miles of road in
the village but that it is also patrolled by the
State Patrol and the Washington County
Sheriffs Department. The Germantown
Police Department have received grants for
traffic enforcement from the state
Department of Transportation (DOT).
According to Hoell, last year his department
received $60,000 in grants from the DOT, a
figure which has dropped to $20,000 this
year.
Hoell said speeding is the most common
violation along Hwy. 41/45, but added that
if an officer observes a violation a stop will
be conduced.
We receive a fair number of cell 911
calls from other drivers reporting road rage
or possible impaired drivers on US 41,
almost daily, he said.

County Board approves agreement

for medical examiner services
The Washington County Board last
week approved an intergovernmental
agreement with Waukesha County under
which Waukesha County will provide
medical examiner services for Washington
County. The agreement will cost
$206,000 for 2015 with a 2.5 percent
escalator clause over the next four years.
Under the five-year agreement,
Waukesha County Medical Examiner
Lynda Biedrzycki will serve the same position for Washington County.

Circulation
circulation@discoverhometown.com

Waukesha County provided forensic

autopsy services for Washington County
for the past seven years.
In presenting the item for consideration, Washington County Administrator
Joshua Schoemann said Biedrzycki has
provided consultation and expertise for
Washington County, including testimony
in court cases in Washington County.
Schoemann added the intergovernmental agreement will also include
Walworth County, which will have medical examiner services provided by
Waukesha County.
Schoemann said the agreement is a
$60,000 increase over the previous
agreement with Waukesha County for
autopsy services. Schoemann said the
new agreement is much more expansive
than that.
I think what is happening is were
increasing our level of service substantially at an extraordinarily discounted rate,
Schoemann said.
With the agreement, Waukesha
County will be able to add a third forensic
pathologist to its staff.
Rob Schafer, the current medical
examiner for Washington County, and
other department staff will stay on board
and perform day to day operations while
being trained and supported by the skills
of a forensic pathologist.

Dear Dr. Winter, I have spaces between my teeth

and I have always been self-conscious about my smile.
I am a college student so I am financially limited. Is
there anything that you can do to help me with my
problem?
Dear John, it can often be intimidating to go to a
dentist when you dont know all of your options but we
would love to see you for a no charge consultation. If
your teeth are in a good position but you simply have
some spacing we may be able to use white fillings
called bonding to close your gaps. This may all be
done in one or two visits and can often last 5-7 years or
longer. Then when you are in a different economic
position we could replace the bonding with porcelain
veneers. These veneers are thin white porcelain pieces
that cover your tooth and can often change the shape
and color of your teeth resulting in a much prettier
smile.
If you have a jaw that is too large for the size teeth
you have, then perhaps crowns may be needed to try
and improve the overall height and width of your teeth.
Again transitional bonding can help determine what
the best solution is for your situation. If orthodontics
could solve your problem this also can be discussed. It
is always better to move teeth to close spaces then to
add materials that will eventually require replacement
assuming your tooth size is acceptable.
Dear Dr. Winter, could you tell me about the
difference between Snap-On Dentures and miniimplant dentures? I am limited financially but I cant
stand my dentures! They pop up during eating and
talking all the time and I need some way to stabilize
them. I read the testimonials on your website and
watched all the videos and I am convinced these
options will help me.
Dear Peter, regular sized implants are always
preferable to mini-implants. That is because there is a
greater surface area on larger implants and they hold
on to your bone better. Also traditional implants that
are 3.0 mm in diameter or larger can have the tops or
chimneys changed in order to UPGRADE to a fixed
bridge in the future. Mini-implants do not have an
upgrade path. That means that if you decide to invest
more time, effort and money in the future to have teeth

that stay in all the time, the mini-implants would
need to be removed and larger implants placed.
The article on Upgradeable Dentistry
explains this concept on the website:
www.hamptondentalassociates.com where you can
see that any implants will improve your situation!
The ability to use larger implants will allow us to use
larger attachments that have the ability to hold your
prosthesis even firmer then the mini-implants. Both
choices will be way better then using denture
adhesive! I invite you and our readership to come in
for a free consultation to see if Snap-On dentures or
Mini-Implant dentures are right for you! My goal as
a dentist is to help everyone to get rid of their
dentures and move back to fixed teeth. These two
choices are wonderful ways to begin that journey.

Richard B. Winter D.D.S. M.A.G.D. D.I.C.O.I. D.A.B.O.I./I.D.

Board approves books sequels following student presentation

The Germantown School Board
approved additional instructional materials
Nov. 24 after several students from Kennedy
Middle School made a presentation requesting to read sequels to books that were
already in class.
At the start of the presentation, Director
of Teaching and Learning Brenda O'Brien
said the six sixth grade students previously
made a presentation at the committee level
asking to purchase the sequels. She said the
discussion came out of ideas for reading and
writing.
"They were very excited about what they
had wanted to continue that learning,"
O'Brien said of the students' request.
O'Brien added that the students learned
about the process of presenting items for consideration first at the committee level and
then at the School Board.
At the start of the presentation, one of the

students said the students were part of a

book club and everyone loved their book
and are requesting for the books they were
reading
"We are begging for the sequels so we
can continue reading and learning," one of
the students said.
When the students were done reading
the books they wrote down seven learning
targets, which included restating the plot,
identifying the theme with text evidence,
identifying internal and external conflicts,
recognizing the major conflicts in the book
and showing how they were resolved, analyzed static and dynamic characters and
explained character changes and the relationship to the theme.
After the books, the students used various ways to show how the learning targets
were met, including making Powerpoint presentations, papers, movies, while one class

created a game. The students the presented

a list of sequels they were requesting, including From Novelt to Nowhere by Jack
Gantos, Catching Fire and Mockinjay by
Suzanne Collins, Everwild and Everfound by
Neal Shusterman, Among the Imposters and
Among the Betrayed by Margaret Peterson
and Everest: The Climb and Everest: The
Summit by Gordon Korman.
Board member said five to six books
would be requested for each class.
Suggested new learning targets included
comparing and contrasting characters, con-

nections to world events and developing new

characters and writing from their perspective.
The board approved the request for the
additional materials.
Superintendent Jeff Holmes said he previously heard about the presentation and
commended the students for coming to the
board with their proposal
"I love that the students are taking ownership of their own learning and bringing this
forward," Holmes said. He later added the
students "are a great example for others."

Boys basketball

Germantown routs Bay in

conference opener
The Germantown boys basketball team
struggled early against Whitefish Bay
before an 11-2 run in the second quarter
broke the game open on the way to a 8761 win Dec. 5.
A basket by Isaiah Johnson gave Bay
an 18-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
That lead was erased when Germantown's
Kyle Theis was fouled while converting a
layup at the start of the second quarter,
with Theis converting the layup.
"I was just waiting for a spark. We have
shooters on the team and we had open
shots, we just didn't hit them in the first quarter. Second quarter, we kind of came
around a little bit and made some shots,
Germantown Coach Steve Showalter said.
"To start the third quarter we came around
with great energy, ready to play."
A layup by Theis at the 3:32 mark started the 11-2 run, as Germantown led 34-24
at halftime. A nine point run early in the

third quarter gave the Warhawks a 47-27

lead following a basket by Conner
Edmonds.
Germantown held on to a double-digit
lead in the fourth quarter even as three
players had three fouls.
"It was easier to manage fouls with a
25 point lead, believe me," Showalter said,
adding how he was challenged to manage
fouls during the first half of the season
opener against Kettle Moraine.
"Luckily, we didn't get in too much foul
trouble until the game was out of reach, he
said.
Showalter said his team needs to
improve in rebounding following the Bay
contest, while he praised his squad for their
unselfishness against the Blue Dukes.
Our ability to look for each other is our
saving grace, that's what makes us tough to
beat, relatively," Showalter said.

Boys basketball: Chargers rally

past Slinger
Hamilton gradually built on its lead
against Slinger Dec. 9 before holding on
for a 55-44 win.
The Chargers held a 9-8 lead after the
first quarter and opened up a seven-point
lead after a basket by Nate Fies gave
Hamilton a 19-12 lead at the 3:55 mark of
the second quarter.
A six-point run gave Hamilton a 52-32
lead with 4:06 remaining but the Owls converted three three-point baskets to reduce
the gap. Zach Jasinski led Hamilton with 14
points.
Afterward, Hamilton Coach Andy
Cerroni noted that Assistant Coach Dan
Heckman told his team about "piling up
good possessions" on both offense and
defense.
"Offensively we didn't have any big,
big run but we were efficient. Defensively,
we had some stops and we strung some
stops together in row to get a little lead,"
Cerroni said.
Cerroni said his team did struggle
against Slinger's press but his team was
able to get a few turnovers and extra possession with their pace.
Afterward, Hamilton had a 4-0 record.
The Chargers were to begin Greater Metro
Conference play against Hamilton Dec. 12.

30: Menomonee Falls limited Franklin to
single-digits scores in the first three quarters.
Jake Stauffacher and Dontrell Handy were
the leading scorers in the game, with both
scoring 12 points. Afterward, Menomonee
Falls had a 3-3 record. Menomonee Falls
was to open the Greater Metro Conference
season against Wauwatosa East Dec. 12.

Girls basketball:Second half surge

lifts Germantown past Grafton
The two halves of the GermantownGrafton girls basketball game Dec. 6 could
not have been more different.
A close lead turned into double-digit
win in a matter of minutes at the start of the
third quarter, as Germantown won 60-40.
Both teams struggled to score in the first
quarter, as Germantown didn't get on the
board until the 5:02 mark, as a basket by
the Warhawks Taylor Higginbotham made
the score 3-2 in favor of Grafton. Grafton
held an 8-5 lead at the end of the quarter
and a 23-22 lead by halftime.
But Germantown scored the first 13
points of the third quarter to take a 35-23
lead by the 5:14 mark. A layup by Val

Meissner gave Germantown 46-26 lead by

the 2:39 mark of the third quarter as
Germantown maintained the lead for the
rest of the game. Higginbotham led all scorers with 28 points. Germantown improved
its record to 4-0 overall.
Dec. 9, Divine Savior Holy
Angels 51, Menomonee Falls 40:
Madison Grzesiak and Karly Volz both
scored 13 points for Menomonee Falls.
Afterward, Menomonee Falls had a 1-3
overall record.
Dec. 6, Hamilton 61, Milton 32:
Hamilton's Taylor Klug led all scorers with
17 points, as the Chargers improved their
record to 2-1 overall.
