Montage
Description:
This project is an inspiration montage combining five separate images and a quote to showcase the
editing capabilities in Photoshop and the use of typography.

Date:
October 25, 2014

Course/Instructor:

Emily Kunz

Programs:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Inform audience about the spiritual message of Gods love for us and Christs sacrifice through a
scripture from John 18:37.

Process:
I formulated a plan on how I would showcase the main message of this image through a quoted scripture.
I found images on-line of the subject matter because I did not have any of my own. I started with an
image by Greg Olson entitled Worlds Without Number. I placed this at the bottom of my image of a
showcase of stars that I had found on line. I had to use two of the star images in order to create the look
that I wanted with the dark and light elements and so I blended these two images using a mask. This I
made into an 8.5 x 11 background in Photoshop.
I then selected another image by Greg Olson entitled No Greater Love, and placed it towards the upper
left of the page. I was then able to use a mask with different levels of opacity, a brush, and black paint in
order to create a blended effect into the background. I then added an image of Greater Love, by Darin
Ashby to create the rule of thirds and to add an additional focus to the message. I also used different
levels of opacity in order to blend the hand into the background. Finally, I placed the scripture in a
position where it is surrounded by the other images. Using two contrasting fonts and sizes, in order to
draw the focal point to the word truth in my design.

Programs:
Adobe InDesign/Adobe Illustrator/Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Inform audience about the company, Zen Travel, its purpose, contact information, and services available.

Process:
I set up an offset layout in Adobe InDesign. I split my layout into two sections on the back so that
the front page would fold over towards a design of a road sign with the tag line on the right of the
composition. The inside of the brochure contains the body copy separated by the fold of the brochure. I
used light green bars throughout the brochure to create repetition and flow. I chose several pictures that
tried to show the Triadic color scheme of Teal, Gold, and Violet. Several of the images are also dark and
have elements of varying gray colors.
For the images of the plumeria flowers on the inset, and the picture of the waterfall on the back of the
brochure, I used the quick selection tool in Adobe Photoshop to remove the background of the images. I
then used the refine mask dialogue box to smooth, feather, shift edge and apply contrast to the outline of
the two images. The changes I made helped to give a sense of depth to the flowers and helped to reduce
the unnecessary images in the waterfall picture. I then placed the two images into InDesign where I used
the text wrap option to wrap my text around the alpha channel of the plumeria image, but chose not to
text wrap the waterfall image so that my logo would fit within the image without distorting.
I created the logo in Illustrator using the pen tool to trace an image of a plumeria flower and a script text
and then I placed it into InDesign as the focal point of the front page and repeated the image as a part of
the contact information on the back page.

Letterhead
Description:
Letterhead for a business with a newly created logo.

Date:
November 8, 2014

Course/Instructor:

Programs:
Adobe InDesign/Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:
Inform audience of the company of Pirate Pandas Publishing. I imagine that this company could be used
in order to print childrens books, or adult books that are fun and upbeat.

Process:
I decided to try to use some alteration with my business and through some research decided on a Pirate
Panda idea. I created the logo using simple shapes and strokes in Adobe Illustrator. I also wanted to use
a cutlass as the main letter in the title, shaping it into a P. Once the logo was created, I opened a new
InDesign document and placed my logo into this document. I decided to start with my letterhead and
placed a large header of maroon and a brown footer in the design. I also placed grid lines and guides
to try to keep my edges at least .5 away from the edges. I typed in the contact information using
fictional data and positioned it on the right-hand side of the letterhead. I made the name a 10pt font in
order to contrast the 8pt contact information and the 12pt font of the title. I created a bamboo design in
Illustrator and placed this at a light opacity on top of the header and the footer to create visual interest.
On the second page I used the rectangle tool to create the front and back outline of my business card and
made sure that they were both at the required size of 3.5 x 2 by using the tool bar for the dimensions. I
then copied/pasted the logo and contact information onto this page. I placed the contact information on
one side with the bamboo as a watermark, and a watermark panda and logo on the other side. I kept the
logo and contact information about the same size as the information on the letterhead.

Event A d
Description:
This is a full-page event ad used to promote a fundraiser. This ad includes a full-bleed page as well as an
image that was scanned at high-resolution.

Date:
October 11, 2014

Course/Instructor:
Visual Communications 130 Section 11
Emily Kunz

Programs:
Microsoft Word/ PDF2JPG.net

Objectives:
To promote a fundraiser that would bring awareness to the community about breast cancer and raise
money for the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Centers Cancer Center. The money raised at this
fundraiser would go towards helping the women suffering with breast cancer in Eastern Idaho.

Process:
I used an image that I found in More magazine. This image was an 8x12, full page image that originally
had a glass case and the name of the artist listed. Using Microsoft Word, I used the many different
options found in the program in order to create a clean-cut image. After several attempts using different
methods, I settled on removing the background of the image. This made it possible to make the main
focus of the page to be the rose and to remove the glass case. This also made the process of adding a
title box and the other content boxes much easier without having to worry about the image of the glass
getting in the way. I also created a box around the event ad that would give a slight difference of color to
the background that I had added in order to create contrast. I also placed the body copy at an angle that
would help to make that information stand out. I placed the place, date and time at an angle as well, in
order to create flow.
After several color schemes, I settled on a plum color that came from the rose, and the triadic colors of
teal and a light gold for the text and accents around the image. I used Microsoft Word, a HP Photosmart
Premium Scanner, and PDF2JPG.net in order to convert the PDF I created into the JPG image.

Photo Design
Description:
This project was designed in order to demonstrate good photography and editing skills. It was also
designed in order to show how to correctly incorporate color into a poster layout using a compatible
color scheme.

Date:

Course/Instructor:

Emily Kunz

Programs:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Inform audience about the importance of the scriptures by replicating a window looking outside towards
a mailbox photograph that I had captured, edited, and altered.

Process:
I decided to take a quality photograph of a neighbors mailbox with good light, sharp focus, and a nice
composition using an Olympus SZ-12. I then imported the image into Photoshop and edited the image
using light levels, sharpness, saturation, and color balance. I created a 8.511 layout that would include
my photo, text and repeating design elements. I found a quote that would highlight he use of a mailbox
in my image. I researched ideas online that could include all of the elements that I needed to replicate the
appearance of a window so that it would appear as though the audience is looking outside.
I placed the image inside a red background that I had created a textured effect using a high opacity
in order to help create the shadows and lines of a window. Using the colors from the color wheel and
matching them to the photo using the eyedropper, I placed a frame over the image of the mailbox with
the same textured look and varying levels of opacity to replicate window panes. I also added small
details to replicate locks on the window. Using a light gold from the color wheel, I created a border
where the window would appear open in order to create a focal point as to where the quote would lay. I
used a dark brown from the image using the color picker and then changed the color and font of the word
scriptures in order to create a focal point.

Logo
Description:
A project of three varying logos for the same company.

Date:
November 1, 2014

Course/Instructor:
Visual Communications 130 Section 11
Emily Kunz

Programs:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:
Create three varying logos for a combination Bookstore and Bakery.

Process:
Several processes went into these designs using Adobe Illustrator. The formulating stage was important
in order to find quick designs after researching logos online and after critiques. After creating the details
of a bookworm, I placed it behind a title of The Bookery. I also added a subtitle of Bookstore and
Bakery in order to clarify the message that I was trying to convey and added a cherry to balance the
design. The second design incorporates two illustrations of chocolate chip cookies that developed and
changed over time in order to represent the Os. The last logo is one that has undergone many changes
in order to showcase an open book with a cherry on top.
I wanted to create a different feel with each design in order to have a variety of styles from which to
choose. I chose a playful title font for the first logo with a strong modern font for the subtitle. The
second logo included an enlarged B with a balanced title in an old style font. This was complemented
by a sans-serif font. The last logo had rounded corners and it was suggested to use a rounded and sans
serif font for the title. I then used a modern font for this subtitle. All of the logos were designs with color
styles from the color wheel found in the Visual FOCUS textbook.

Programs:
Notepad++/Adobe Photoshop.

Objectives:
Inform audience that The Bookery is a place where people could come to eat, socialize, or to find a
quiet place to read and purchase new books.

Process:
After I marked up all my content and inserted my image using Notebook++, I attached a CSS document
that had been provided for us to my HTML. I then used the colors from my logo as the colors for my
web page. I found these colors by opening Photoshop and using the eyedropper tool in order to find
the Hex # for my colors. I also changed my fonts to Book Antiqua and went onto Google Fonts to find
a sans-serif font. I was able to find and download Nunito. I declared some backup fonts just in case the
viewers browser didnt have these fonts. I also used padding around the logo and text so that they would
not be too close to the edge of the web page. I created a textured background color in Photoshop and
inserted it into my CSS. I also increased the size of my web page width in order to add more room and
also created decorative corners and rounded edges.

Flier
Description:
This is a flier that promotes a leadership conference for graduated students to be held on October 21.
This flier also gives the information needed in order to help students register for the conference online
and before space is no longer available.

Date:
October 4, 2014

Course/Instructor:
Visual Communications 130 Section 11
Emily Kunz

Programs:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:
Inform audience about a leadership conference for graduates that would like to gain a new perspective on
becoming leaders in their fields.

Process:
The process began with four sketches of different contrasts in order to open up the many possibilities for
this flier. After I chose one sketch to compile, I used Adobe InDesign to create a composite using the text
given and the title and logo that I chose. I decided to add a focal point of the images on the right hand of
the flier in order to draw the eye towards the information on the left of the page. The large title at the
top of the page also helps to lead the eye down to the text as well.
The draft that was created was then critiqued by several individuals to gain different perspectives. The
suggestions that were given were then implemented as needed in order to help produce a final product
that hopefully better appealed to the audience as a whole.
