Web Page
Description:
A Web page designed to showcase a personal logo.

Date: November 22, 2014

Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Comm 130 Section 03
Programs(s)/Tool:
Sublime Text Editor 3, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe
Illustrator.

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web

page.
Write content to describe the process creating your logo
and how it appeals to a target audience.
Design a web page using HTML to display a logo and
content.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and
basicunderstanding of CSS.
Identify hex colors or web design.
Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as
one file.

Process:

I had a lot of experience in HTML and CSS prior to this

assignment. I used Sublime Text Editor 3 to mark up
the HTML. The layout is basic, but outlined very well. I
spent a small about of time adding classes and IDs to
some of the tags in order to get more specific styling.
The CSS sheet was built based on the tags I labeled
and additionally some of the components given in the
default CSS page provided for the assignment. I linked
the original logo and also added the hexagons I made in
illustrator to the page. What took the most amount of
time was positioning the paragraphs explaining me logo
over the top of the hexagons. I also made sure to use the
colors from my logo to color the shapes and I chose two
fonts that were professional and contrasting.

Business Card

Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Comm 130 Section 03
Programs(s)/Tool:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:
Create a new logo to it a company or personal image.
Design consistent layouts for a business card and
letterhead.Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.

Process:
I designed my business cards using the same logo on the
front and I reversed colors of the circles and put it on
the back. I then took the contact information and left
justified it along the circle with my name in larger point.
I added a line about Web Design and Development as
well for the business card info.

Letter Head

Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Comm 130 Section 03
Programs(s)/Tool:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:
Matching letterhead and business card designed using a
personally created logo.

Process:
I first created a logo consisting of the letters M and W as
well as some lines. I incorporated shapes and used the
pathfinder options to separate everything and add color
to the logo. I then placed the logo in InDesign, and started
my stationery project with it.
I first designed the letterhead and used the logo in the
upper left hand corner with a leading line across the
top of the page. I elected to use the same logo with a
transparency to create a watermark on the middle right
side of the page. I used my contact information as a
line at the bottom of the page. My font pt was 10 on the
contact info line to keep it clean.

Logos
Description:
Three logo variations for the same company.

Date: November 2, 2014

Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Comm 130 Section 03
Programs(s)/Tool:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:
Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal
image. Use the basic tools of Illustrator.

Process:

Initially, I sketched out some different designs and font

types to use for the logos. Then, I started to apply color
names to the sketches to try and get a good idea for what
color scheme I could use for each. I also hand drew the
skull knowing I would use it for at least one of the logos.
In Adobe Illustrator, I used several shapes including
rounded rectangles and circles to create the glove in logo
2. I also traced the skull I drew and used it in logo 3. For
the C in logo 2 and 3, I altered the lower case c from
the font Metal Macabre so that it was less dramatic and
then used the regular font in logo 3 for the remaining
letters. I used the red skull to contrast the third logo but
still be monochromatic.

Brochure
Description:
A two sided (duplex) folding brochure.

Date: December 6, 2014

Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Comm 130 Section 03
Programs(s)/Tool:
Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.Learn how
to wrap text around an image.Use paragraph styles in
InDesign.

Process:
Initially, I used Adobe InDesign to lay out the offset,
margins, and gutters. The idea for my design was that
the front would be as simplistic as possible with the body
copy being on the inside and back of the brochure. I
used a large image of an octagon and then used a black
rectangle with lowered opacity to give a filter to the
image.
I used Adobe Illustrator to design the logo. The
monochromatic scheme of the logo followed into the
overall design of the brochure. I used the star shape to
create the stars and I made the hammer from a series of
hexagons, rectangles, and stars. The font is Trajan.
I edited two of the gym images. I re-sized them and
changed the levels of the images. In order to complete
these edits, I used Adobe Photoshop.

Montage
Description:
An insperational montage made by the blending of two
or moreimages, and the use of typography.

Date: October 25, 2014

Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Comm 130 Section 03
Programs(s)/Tool:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Learn to manage Photoshop layers.
Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks.
Use filters.
Apply appropriate typography.

Process:
I first chose the quote and had the wording styles picked.
Then I looked for a background image and an image of
Christ that had similar coloring to blend easily. I layered
the Christ image and the paper background together,
initially using 100% opacity black brush and then
30% opacity black brush to get the two images to flow
together. I then set the type to the left with Christs view
leading to it. I added emphasis of drop shadow to key
words and contrasted the fonts. Finally, I adjusted the
overall opacity of the background as it was too dark to
match well with the image. To complete this task I used
only Adobe Photoshop.

Date: October 4, 2014

Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Comm 130 Section 03
Programs(s)/Tool:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate
typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic fier
layout.
Create a project folder with image, logo and
InDesigndocument to keep links intact.

Process:
I initially sketched out several designs in different
positions. I selected on sketch to follow for my current
design. My layout was developed in Adobe InDesign.
I used black bars at the top and bottom for and circles
for repetition, shape, asymmetry, and proximity. I also
used the direction of the circles and the direction of the
image for rhythm. The word Edge was enlarged to
give contrast and emphasis. It draws the eye as a focal
point to the text. I was given the image, logo, and content
for this flier. I wrapped the text from the left side of the
page to the right going around the image and the circle. I
aligned the text down the side of the image to give shape
and division.

Event Ad
Description:
A color full-bleed event ad to promote a fundraiser using
only Microsoft Word and a scanner.

Date:
Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Comm 130 Section 03
Programs(s)/Tool:
Microsoft Word

Objectives:
Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed designUse text boxes for layout in
Word.
Insert and edit images in Word

Process:
I scanned an image of a professional photograph done
of my son and then imported that into word. In word
I was able to give the oval shaped effect to have some
rounded edges in the design. I also used several lines to
do the bar weave on the left hand side of the design. It
was important to me to put some effect in my design to
show the ability of Word in this project. Since I didnt
have the design function of Word 2011 on a Mac, I stayed
somewhat conservative on the rest of the design. The
colors were based on the tone of fall and the baby
image.

Imaging
Description:
A personally taken photograph that has been edited/
formatted using Photoshop.

Date: October 14, 2014

Instructor: Ben Pingel
Course: Comm 130 Section 03
Programs(s)/Tool:
Adobe Photoshop, Cannon Rebel T3i Camera

Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills.Use a digital camera to
take a quality image, then download it.Size and crop
the image.Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and
saturation levels.Use a selection tool to isolate a portion
of the image.Desaturate the selected portion of the image.
Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image.

Process:
I planned to do a green monochromatic or brown
monochromatic color scheme depending on what type
of leaves I liked best photographed. I then set out to
Porter Park in the early morning to get the best light and
quality exposure. I used my T3i Rebel Cannon camera to
take the photograph. I used Photoshop to add the desired
elements and style to the image. I used the blurring
tool to give depth to the image and make the tree in the
foreground the focal point. I also used selective color
to try and create contrast between the leaves on the
tree and on the ground. The sharpness tool was used
to contrast the foreground from the background and
add definition to the shadowed areas. I produced an
11X8.5 layout with this image as well as the quote and
color swatches. The swatches were the repeating design
elements. In the swatches, I used color from the image to
create the rings of color in the wheel.
