Hospital Background
The Golden Jubilee National Hospital is a NHS National Waiting Time Centre made of up two distinct parts
the Golden Jubilee National Hospital (GJNH) and the Beardmore Hotel.
The Hospital is based AT Clydebank, near Glasgow and is Scotlands flagship hospital for reducing patient
times and receives national referrals, and having the advantage of being a planned care hospital with is no
Accident and Emergency department, patient care is never impacted upon .

The Anaesthetic Department


The Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine here at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital has
an international reputation as Major Centre of Excellence within the fields of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care and
Pain Medicine.
The Department has an ever-increasing role within the GJNH providing active support for Outpatient Preadmission Clinics and assuming the lead roles in both Critical Care and the Acute Pain Service.
The primary areas of interest for the department are:
Target-controlled intravenous anaesthesia.
Monitoring depth of anaesthesia.
Thoracic epidural anaesthesia and pain relief.
Regional anaesthesia for lower limb surgery.
Transoesophageal echocardiography a two dimensional cardiac imaging technique.

The West of Scotland Heart and Lung Centre


The West of Scotland Heart and Lung Centre is now fully operational at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital
in Clydebank, receiving its official Royal Opening in June 2008.
The centre has centralised the Cardiothoracic (heart and lung) services of Glasgows Western and Royal
infirmaries, with the Thoracic (lung) services from Hairmyres Hospital in a single site, which is spread over
three inpatient floors of the Golden Jubilee, in a modern, purpose-built centre which include seven theatres
and four cardiac catheterisation (cath) labs, special x-ray rooms for diagnosis and treatment of blood vessel
blockages around the heart.
This facility is a Centre of excellence delivering high quality patient care through good management and the
concentration of resources, skills and expertise.
The Services offered at the Heart and Lung Centre includes:
All adult heart and lung surgery for the west of Scotland, including all bypasses, heart valve surgery
and other complex procedures.
Three of the countrys national services the Scottish Advanced Heart Failure Service ( including the
heart transplant unit), the Scottish Pulmonary Vascular Unit and the Scottish Adult Congenital
Cardiac Service.
Interventional cardiology services, including complex pacemakers and
1. Angioplasty - when a balloon and/or a small metal coil (stent) is used to open narrowed
areas in the arteries of your heart.
2. Angiography when a fine tube is passed via the artery (large blood vessel) in your leg or
wrist directly to your heart.
3. Electrophysiology uses electrical currents to check for, and diagnose, heart disease.
With the West of Scotland Regional Heart and Lung Centre being on one site, this provides a number of
benefits for patients:

potential to conduct research leading to innovation and improvements in patient care.

The facilities offered by this new centre are:

37 critical care beds


- 19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds
- 18 High Dependency Unit (HDU) beds
14 cardiology day beds
eight coronary care beds
eight cardiology ward beds
87 heart and lung ward beds
nine beds for national services
500 staff including over 300 nurses and access to over 60 consultants as well as additional medical
staff, physiotherapists, radiologists, cardiac physiologists, support and admin staff.

The projected annual activity that this new centre will undertake is:

1500 heart operations, including 50 adult congenital surgical procedures


2500 lung and oesophageal operations
120 cardiac resynchronisation therapy procedures
7500 cardiology procedures
15 transplants
250 advanced heart failure procedures.
