General

3.1.1

Serious accident duue to Manuual accidennt are extrremely rarre, howeveer back injjuries are the greatest
single cauuse of sickk leave. Spprains and strains arre the resuult of excesssive or inncorrect usse of bodilly
force; succh injuries can lead too permanennt disabilitty.

No personn(s) shouldd be requirred to lift ccarry or moove any load which, by reason of its size and weighht
is likely too jeopardizze their heaalth or safeety.

Handling Techniqu
ues

Good handling ttechniquess are essenntial in the preventionn of injuryy from mannual handliing operatiions. The ccorrect
methood of liftinng is to use the stroong leg annd thigh m
muscles annd to mainntain the nnatural shaape of thee spine
througghout the lift.
The foollowing ppoints shouuld be emphhasized in training prrograms

Plan the Lift:-Wheree is the loaad to be plaaced? Use any approopriate hanndling methhod. Do yoou require aassistance to carry thhe
load? Make suree that theree are no obbstructionss to the lift
ft. For a lonng lift, succh as grounnd to shouulder heighht,

Method off Lifting:

1. Do not jerk keeep properr control off the load.


2. Moove the feett. When tuurning to thhe side do nnot twist thhe trunk.
3. Keeep the loadd close to tthe trunk foor as long aas possiblee.
4. Keeep the heavviest side oof the loadd next to thee trunk.
5. Putt down, and then adjuust. If you required cchanging thhe positionn, but put iit down firrst, and theen
slidde it into thhe requiredd position.
