Primary School teacher Megan Fromholtz
and Grade 1 students Jessica and Sam say
the new Art Space is a great place!

New space is the place

NEW LIGHTS and a spacious art
room at Bacchus Marsh Primary
School is inspiring students to
think outside the box, after an art
show was held in conjunction with
the official opening last week.
The $150,000 art room, which was
fully funded by the school, features windows with interesting
shapes, a red brick feature wall and
large sliding doors opening onto a
kitchen garden.
Visual art teacher Megan Fromholtz said the school was really
proud of self-funding the art room.

Its one large room adjoined to

the old principals house. Its connecting the old and the new. In between the rooms theres a gallery
space. The design of the space is
really inspirational.
In the summer students can take
their easels outside to paint, Ms
Fromholtz said.
Moorabool Mayor Paul Tatchell
attended the opening and said the
Bacchus Marsh Primary school
sets the standard in providing a
holistic education for our young
people.

The new art facility is a remarkable achievement, driven by a team

of dedicated people under the leadership of Principal Ian Wren.
Cr. Tatchell said the fact that it was
funded internally showcases the
can do attitude of the school.
The facility compliments the existing building and provides the
perfect atmosphere for imagination and creativity. The art show
complimented the opening and
displayed a mixed genre of traditional art and technology.

Its always good to meet good

people, he said.
Ms Fromholtz said the new art
space was rustic with nice modern
light fittings made by one of the
parents from old fence wire.
The kids will be inspired working in the space. Its bigger with lots
of light.
She said currently hanging in the
gallery was Grade 5 students work
using wet and dry felting based on
the Ned Kelly series by artist Sidney Nolan.

The students worked with me in

the art room and then created QR
codes for their work on the computers. Scanning the art and having the information come up on
iPads really appeals to the younger
generation and the older generation are enjoying learning the new
technology.
Were hoping outside artists will
come along and use the opportunity to hold exhibitions here out of
school hours. There might also be
opportunities for after-hours art
classes to be held here.

into the front of the truck.
The truck was doing
80kph-90kph, the car was
probably doing 140kph.
The truck driver tried to
swerve, but the car ended
up hitting the truck and
went under the front of it
and the truck tipped over,
rolled over, it was absolutely
destroyed.
When it flipped the cabin
was completely pushed in
- there was a hole that was

made when the truck tipped

over in the windscreen, and
he crawled out of the truck
through that little hole surrounded by jagged glass.
He went straight to the
car and the other bloke was
dead.
The truck driver remains
in hospital and is suffering
trauma.
Not only did this person
want to take his own life,
the implications of this are
pretty horrific. I understand
people have all sorts of issues but if he wanted to take

innocent person and to sacrifice someone elses life and
to traumatise that person is
absolutely wrong, she said.
Ms Dellios explained that
usually there are two drivers in the truck and she is
thankful that both were not
at the time of the collision.
Police are investigating
both of the incidents and
will prepare a report for the
Coroner.
The fatality has not been
added to the road toll.

Police are investigating a

potential murder suicide
which has left an innocent
Bacchus Marsh man traumatised and in hospital.
The incident began at 4am
on Sunday 14 December
when a car collided with a
truck on Hopkins Road in
Truganina, and the single
male occupant of the car was
killed.
Police investigating the
crash were led to conduct a
welfare check on a house in
Corey Close, Deer Park, later
that morning, where the
body of a woman was found.
It is believed that the woman is the wife of the deceased
male.
Investigators said the death
is being treated as suspicious but at this stage they
are not searching for anyone
in relation to the death.
The truck was owned by

Fruits of Life and owner Belinda Dellios explained that
her brother in law was driving the truck involved in the
collision.
He was just helping us out
on the day and was on his
way to pick somebody up to
go to a Farmers Market and
was just doing his normal
thing, then all of a sudden

What the children really saw

AN exhibition that focuses

on literacy has been put
together by local school and
kindergarten children and
is on display at Lerderderg

The exhibition theme is a
childs impression of the
Best Start Literacy Trail,
held in Bacchus Marsh in
September.
Best Start (a partnership
of
local
organisations)
gave each school and
kindergarten a camera so
children could capture
their own impressions of
the Literacy Trail. Their fun,
quirky, creative photos offer
visitors to the exhibition a
unique interpretation of the
day.

Memory Byways, Journeys

The book of poetic and pictorial pieces was launched
on November 30 at the Lerderderg Library and Mayor
Tatchell said the book provided a rare insight into
the devastating effects of
dementia.
The poetry contained in
the book gave a sense that no

from us, nothing can take
away who we are.
The things that define us
as people remain impenetrable defiant of physical loss.
The soul remains faithful to

Season reminder to take care

By Jessica Howard
The Bacchus Marsh State
Emergency
Services
is
warning Moorabool Shire
residents to be careful on the
roads this Christmas, after a
recent multiple vehicle crash
in Parwan.
SES volunteers arrived at
the scene of the crash, situated on the Bacchus MarshGeelong Road, on November
30 to find a three-vehicle
collision with one vehicle on
its roof, having rolled, said
Deputy Controller of Operations Bill Robson.
In total, nine patients were
assessed from the three vehicles with most transported
to hospital. Whilst no persons were trapped, SES vol-

unteers assisted Paramedics

[in treating] the large number of patients, he said.
Police, Ambulance and CFA
also attended.
Mr Robson said this was the
third serious collision in two
weeks which SES volunteers
had attended in the Balliang/Parwan area.
We encourage all motorists to take care on the roads
as the holiday season approaches. Take your time
whilst travelling on the
roads, take regular breaks
and stay alert, he said.
Our volunteers are, as always, on call 24 hours a day,
7 days a week, however we
are hoping for an incident
free holiday period.

Commuters need training

RESIDENTS living near the

Ballan Railway Station are
fed up with commuters who
park along Atkinson and
Fisken streets.
Atkinson Street resident
Annette Hunt said many
commuters were parking
directly outside her house,
in front of her bins on collection day, and sometimes
overlapping her driveway,

rather than using empty car

spaces at the stations eastern
carpark.
The worst thing is when
they park in front of our
bins. Our bins havent been
collected at least four times.
Council has offered us tip
vouchers, but what if we
didnt have a trailer? Mrs
Hunt said.
Sometimes I cant reverse

out of my driveway because

the cars are parked so close
to the edge of my driveway,
or are overlapping it.
The excuses you get from
the people parking there
are usually, were running
late. But the new carpark
(east of the station) is never
full. Its silly. That carpark
is just as close as here and
its got lighting and security

cameras.
Fisken Street residents
have the same problem as
us. People actually abuse us
if we ask them to move.
Its just pure laziness. They
admit theyre running late.
A couple of times cars have
been left here for a whole
weekend or a week.
Mrs Hunt said the loss of
amenity for residents of Atkinson and Fisken streets
was getting worse. Weve
lived here 23 years and are
now thinking of moving
just because of the parking
issue.
Nothing is enforced and
thats the problem. The
(Moorabool Shire) compliance officer I complained
to said nothing could be
done. If they kept an eye
on it and did their job then
we wouldnt have an issue.
Our neighbour has already
moved because of it. Theyre
not listening to us, she said.
Its a big safety issue. There
are young kids in this street.
I cant allow my grandkids
outside because people dont
care. Were liable coming out
of our driveways if we cant
see because of these parked
cars and we hit a stationary or moving car, or even
a person. The cars block our
vision.
She said police could only
book people who parked illegally, and there was no signage to prevent people from
parking next to or over her
driveway.
Mrs Hunt received an email
from Moorabool Shire Council on December 4 which
said the issue was being investigated by civil engineers
and they would get back to
her.
At the time of going to print,
Moorabool Shire Council
hadnt responded to enquiries made by The Moorabool
News.

HELLO
ABU
DHABI

Its all about you!

Recover from Christmas with a new 2015 resolution: to make
your holiday plans a reality.
WRITTEN BY HELLOWORLD TRAVEL EXPERTS

he party season is on our doorstep

and before you know it the Christmas
gatherings and New Years celebrations
will be over and it will be back to work
time, so what better way to start off 2015 than
with a holiday already planned!
Every now and then, you need to give
yourself a chance to have a full rest and
recharge of your batteries. Be it at a luxury
retreat, on a mini-break with some friends
or at your own spa getaway, make 2015 the
year you go all out and treat yourself.

Wake up and smell the

coffee roses

Kick-start your New Year health routine

with a cleansing getaway. Wean yourself
off caffeine, sugar or other vices all while
getting a healthy intake of guided exercise,
chances to clear the mind with meditation
and a full eight hours sleep each night.
Whether youre trying to kick a habit, start
a new one or just want some general R&R,
a getaway to a health retreat should be on
your 2015 to-do list.

Hello spa-time

If youre not fussed on a detox, perhaps

a spa retreat is more your cup of fully
caffeinated coffee. Spend time relaxing
a in a Jacuzzi with some champagne,
followed by a full body massage, facial and
manicure. Nothing will make you feel more

totally relaxed than scented candles, spa

music and a fluffy bath robe. By the time
you head home, youll be kneaded and deknotted and ready to take on the world.

Reconnect with yourself

Many retreats have a no phones policy

that, though it might take some getting
used to, is one of the best ways to truly
feel refreshed and recharged. A report out
of the UK released this year suggests we
spend more time consuming media on tech
devices than we do sleeping, so its little
wonder that were overwhelmed and often
feel burned out. Take a chance to get away
and switch off your devices and believe us,
youll feel refreshed in a way you havent for
years. Instagram, emails and snapchat will
all survive without you checking in on them!

Make it a mini-break

Grab the girls and head to the Big Smoke,

for a weekend of guilty pleasures. Think
morning massages, followed by late nights
of drinking and dancing. It can be hard to
organise catch-ups around school, kids
and annual leave but with a bit of forward
scheduling four months is a good start
and by booking everything early, it really
is a cinch. The girls hardly need much
convincing to join you!
It cant always be about you, but in 2015
make an indulgent escape dream a reality.

Flower show blooms

Ballan Red Cross Annual Flower Show

Forrest Gump said Life

is like a box of chocolates.
You never know what you
are going to get. The same
could be said for a flower
show with the weather playing an important part for
exhibitors.
Despite the lack of rain, the
overall enthusiasm of exhibitors did not wilt.
Red Cross member Leone
Fabre said the Christmas
displays showed a clear passion from exhibitors.
They certainly put a lot of
work into them.
Guest speaker Jim Leahy entertained the large
crowd with singing and
storytelling.
Everyone was talking
about him after the show. He
has been one of the best we
have had, Ms Fabre said.
With the support from a
small town and volunteers
we raised a clear profit of
$2,800. Pretty amazing I
think for one day!

GORDON artist Marlene
Gilson is telling the story of
her people and aboriginal
history at Melbourne Museum with her exhibition Past,
Present and Future.
The Wadawurrung elder
and her daughter Deanne
Gilson have created over
30 pieces of art, including
paintings, sculpture and ink
drawings, which capture
significant milestones in
aboriginal history, including
John Batman signing a treaty with aboriginal people in
Melbourne.
Both artists distinctively
explore colonial records of
the goldfields of Ballarat and
settlement of Melbourne,
celebrating the Koorie story
that is embedded but not always acknowledged in these
histories.
Im telling their stories, our

Aunty Marlene and her
daughter were both short-

listed in the 2014 Victorian

Indigenous Art Awards in
August, where Deanne won
the Australian Catholic University Acquisitive Award,
and on December 5 Aunty
Marlene won the Koorie

It was for a painting I did

of a cricket match at Coranderrk, she said.

We have had a good

Aunty Marlene said it was

Fiskville
to come
under fire

THE new Victorian Government will hold a parliamentary inquiry into health
concerns at the Fiskville CFA
training centre.
Last Tuesday Premier Daniel Andrews announced that
when Parliament resumes
a Joint Parliamentary Committee would be established
to conduct the inquiry.
The inquiry will study pollution, contamination and
unsafe activities at Fiskville
between 1970 and today.
It will also cover the sites
effects on the health of employees, residents and visitors during that time.
We need a full and frank
inquiry to answer every
question, honour every
worker and reassure every
family, Premier Andrews
said.
Its time to put this right.
I promised an inquiry
and now Im establishing
it, because I support our

firefighters.
Slater and Gordons principal lawyer, Julie Clayton,
said the inquiry was a step
to finally getting some answers for Fiskville victims
and their families.
Ever since concerns about
the Fiskville site gained public prominence in 2011, our
clients have been dealing
with the uncertainty of not
knowing exactly what they
were exposed to on the site
and what kinds of health impacts this might cause into
the future, Ms Clayton said.
We are pleased that the inquiry will consider compensation options to overcome
this unacceptable situation,
and will continue to advocate strongly for a fair outcome for our clients.
The committee will provide
an interim report by June
2015 and a final report by
December 2015.

Can modern science be

threatened by nature?
As with the previous two
weeks, this week I continue
the philosophical bent. This
piece has to do with how
we humans cope with our
natural world.
In relation to nature, religion has often been accused, especially in light of
the present environmental
crisis, of trying to control,
or even extinguish, the wild.
The Genesis account within
the Christian tradition especially has been seen as
promoting a type of control
as man is commanded by
God to subdue the Earth
(Genesis 1.28). Jay Griffiths
in Wild An Elemental
Journey (Jeremy P. Tarcher
Penguin, New York, 2006)
expresses this criticism well
when speaking about the
early Christian missionaries in South America, The
missionaries hated the feral

shagginess of the Amazon,

and early Christian monks
considered that the groves
and thickets harboured the
devil.
But what about science and
its approach to nature and
the wild? Can modern science also be threatened by
nature? In the current modern persons understanding,
science is seen as the great
liberator. Owing to the Enlightenment period, so it
goes, science arose and liberated us all from the magical thinking of the past. But
what are the consequences
of this rise of science to the
wild in nature and in humankind? If parts of the
Christian tradition can be
accused of contributing to
the environmental crisis we
presently face, has science
improved things in this regard? Perhaps science could

itself be all about controlling

nature and the wild, both
within and without.
Derrick Jensen in Dreams
(Seven Stories Press, New
York, 2011) quotes from Richard Dawkins who by any account is one of the most familiar names in the science
world today. Jensen quotes
Dawkins from What is
True? in The Devils Chaplain (New York: Houghton
Mifflin, 2003) where he says,
Science boosts its claim
to truth by its spectacular
ability to make matter and
energy jump through hoops
on command, and to predict what will happen and
when. This writer asks, is
making matter and energy
jump through hoops simply
another way of saying conquer or subdue the earth?
Science, as understood and
promoted by Richard Dawk-

ins, is seen by Derrick Jensen

as modern societys way of
controlling the natural and
the wild, of subjugating all
in order to control and rule.
In this sense can we say that
nature and the wild are as
much a threat to modern
science as they were, and
possible still are, to Western
religions?
This attitude of defeating
and controlling nature and
the wild that is proposed by
Jensen as the central feature
of modern science is especially evident in the following section from Dreams
where Derrick Jensen again
refers to the writing of Richard Dawkins. Jensen writes,
What bothers me most
about Richard Dawkins is
that the world he describes
bears scant resemblance
to the world I inhabit. His
world is nasty, meaning-

less, and full of suffering.

For example, he (Dawkins)
writes, The total amount
of suffering per year in the
natural world is beyond
all decent contemplation.
During the minute that it
takes me to compose this
sentence, thousands of animals are being eaten alive,
many others are running
for their lives, whimpering
with fear, others are slowly
being devoured from within
by rasping parasites, thousands of all kinds are dying of starvation, thirst and
disease. (Quoted by Jensen
from Richard Dawkins,
Gods Utility Function in
River Out of Eden: A Darwinian View of Life, New
York: Basic Books, 1995, 85)
From this brief description it
is little wonder that Dawkins
is keen to make matter and

energy jump through hoops

on command. If nature and
the wild cause so much suffering per year in the natural
world that it is beyond
all decent contemplation
then it needs bringing under
control.
In contrast to this view Derrick Jensen writes, (Dawkins) could just have easily
written: The total amount
of joy per year in the natural
world is beyond all decent
comprehension. During the
moment that it takes me to
compose this sentence thousands of animals are lying in
the sun, others are making
love, moaning in ecstasy,
others are nursing their
young, playing with others
of their kind, playing with
others of other species.
What is your opinion?

128 INGLIS STREET, BALLAN

When your kids are demanding their own bedrooms, that old-fashioned
kitchen is getting on your
nerves or your house needs
a major overhaul, a difficult
decision awaits: to renovate
or relocate.
Renovating an existing
home offers the chance to
create the house you want
in the location you know
and like. It avoids upheavals
such as changing childrens
schools or settling into a new
community. But the difficulties are obvious: the disruption, the need to temporarily
rent or live in a building site,
the expense and potential
for cost overruns, the work
involved in planning permissions, design and project
management.
Buying a new home may
seem easier. But it brings
its own challenges, not least
of which is finding the ideal
home in your preferred location. As well, it entails
selling your existing home
for the right price and coordinating moving from one to
the other, preferably without
renting in the interim.
Its a difficult choice, and
one of those occasions when
making a list of priorities
can help.
Start by asking yourself
what you want most: is it to
stay in your current location?
Is it to live in a home which
meets all your requirements
and fulfils the wish list you
have been compiling for all

those years?
If the answer is yes, ask
yourself whether all the
downsides of a major renovation from potentially
months with no kitchen
and/or bathroom to choosing everything from light fittings to drawer handles are
worth it to achieve your location and dream home goals.
If you decide that the end
result is worth it, start interviewing architects to obtain
costs for your renovation and
ensure that what you want is
achievable with the funds
you have. Thoroughly analyse your finances, including meeting with your bank
manager and accountant, to
ensure you can raise those
funds, plus contingency.
It is also time to talk to a local real estate agent to ensure
you will not be overcapitalising your home. If the cost of
your renovation will take the
amount spent on your home
above the ceiling price for
homes in your area, it may
be time to rethink. Even if
you plan to stay long term,
assuming you will eventually be in profit, overcapitalising is not a good idea.
Sometimes selling unexpectedly is necessary and if the
house is overcapitalised, you
may lose money.
If you think the upheaval of
a renovation is not justified,
or you are undecided about
it, an estate agent can help.
Have your home appraised
is the amount it is likely
to sell for enough to buy the
home you want? What are
the chances you will be able
to buy the home you want
in your desired area for the
amount you will have?
There are many important
questions to be asked and
considered. Weigh all the
factors involved, decide
your priorities, draw on the
professionals for advice, and
talk to friends and family
who have renovated about
what was involved.

computer, increasing the amount of RAM is possibly the Email

most effective way of boosting speed and handling power.
Your computer uses Random Access Memory (RAM) to
hold program code and process instructions that you
give your software when computing. When you turn your
computer off, RAM loses the data that was used during

Darley
Cricket Club
Results Round 6
The First XI hosted Mt
Clear at Darley Park, winning the toss and electing
to bat, however they could
not string a partnership
together and were bowled
out for 76. With 47 overs left
in the day, Mt Clear began
their run chase, and looked
to be in trouble early at 3/25.
Mt Clear finished the day
on 8/102. Sajith Rupasingha
3/37, Matthew Cape 2/16,
and Brian Wheelahan 2/28
the highlights with the ball.
The Second XI lost the toss
and bowled first, wasting
no time getting the first two
wickets without conceding
a run. Wickets continued to
tumble frequently and Mt
Clear were bowled out in the
35th over for 86. Jason Spence
3/18, Hayden Jamieson 2/10,
and Ben Longhurst 2/20
were highlights as was Corey Beatons first 2nd XI wicket. Unfortunately Darley
also struggled with the bat,
and were bowled out for 54
in reply. With 11 overs left in
the day, Mt Clear began their
2nd innings and were 2/30 at
stumps.
The Third XI won the toss
and batted, posting 135. Brad
Roberts 69 and Zak Butters
15 batting at number three in
his first ever senior game for
the club were the highlights.
Mt Clear finished the day at
1/77 in reply, however quick
wickets could shift the game
back in Darleys favour.
The Fourth XI won the toss
and batted first, and like the
other grades struggled to
string a partnership together, and were bowled out for
just 59. The woes continued
with the ball as Mt Clear
quickly amassed 159 without loss, declared with 17
overs to go for the day. Darley batted extremely well in
the second dig, with Lachie
Wheeler the highlight of the
day amassing 62* out of Darleys 1/70 total at stumps.
The Under 16 Gold side had
a great win over Mt Clear in
their one day match on turf
at Darley Park. After winning the toss Darley sent
Mt Clear into bat and got a
quick wicket early with the
visitors at 1/18. However Mt
Clear fought back to be 2/50,
but quick wickets again saw
Darley back in control as they
restricted Mt Clear to 6/78cc
off 25 overs. Joel Barnes 3/7
off 4 was the highlight. Darley finished the day on 7/91
at stumps off 24 overs for a

comfortable win.
The Under 17 T20 side took
on Melton West to amass
8/199cc off their 20. Jye Stephenson 3/35 off 4, Brandan
Foley 2/15 off 2, and Drew
Locke 2 catches were the
highlights. Ryan Orr 44 and
Jack Watkins 38 were the
highlights with the batting,
however the young Lions
were unable to reign in the
big total set by West Melton,
and finished with 6/117cc off
20.
Under 16 Blue hosted top
side Ballan at Civic Hub
Oval, and after winning
the toss sent the visitors in.
The young side bowled extremely well against a talented opposition to restrict
them to 7/130 off 25. Baidon
Leonard 2/8 and Callum
Margrain 2/11 were the pick
of the bowlers. Darley were
bowled out for 54 in the 21st
over.
The Under 14s had a well
fought win away against
Ballarat/Redan at Alfredton. After winning the toss
and batting, Darley amassed
3/106cc off their 25 overs.
Blake Colley 30* and Liam
Cornford 24* were the highlights in a great team effort
with the bat. Tight bowling
by the young lions saw the
home side restricted to 6/90
off their 25 sealing another
great victory for this outfit.
Under 12 Cubs played their
match against Eynesbury.
Eynesbury won the toss and
batted first finishing their
innings on 5/99 over the two
days played.
Lane Havelberg 1/5 off
4, and Ben Taylor 1/4 off 3
and Rockey Hoey 2 catches
led the way. Darley managed a whopping 2/179 off
their 40 overs to set up the
big win. Jaylan Altray 25*
and Ben Taylor 25* were the
highlights.
Under 12 Pride hosted
Melton South and batted
first after winning the toss.
There were four retirements
as Darley set up a big target
of 7/155 off 40 overs. Lachie
Oakley 25* was the highlight
of the innings. 15 players
shared the bowling duties in
another great team performance to keep the visitors
to 8/91 off 40. Jeremy Walker
2/1 off 3, and Brodie Ward
2/8 off 4 were the highlights.

Pacing Cup
debacle in
Ballarat

Victorian harness racing

received an unwanted kick
in the guts when last Saturday nights Ballarat Cup
meeting was decimated by
scratchings, due to variations in sulky specifications
especially the feature event
of the evening - the $100,000
(Group 1) Petstock Ballarat
Pacing Cup where six of
the ten runners were late
scratchings.
This matter has been documented all through the media in the early part of the
week, however the most
important issue was INTEGRITY, with thousands
of dollars being lost to the
industry through the wagering dollar.
It has been suggested that
the issue should have come
to a head prior to the Ballarat fixture, as discussions
had been ongoing since the
previous Wednesday or
Thursday.
Maybe common sense
should have prevailed, with
HRV advising all trainers at

Sell it Local for Less

the meeting by around midday, that a certain type of

sulky could not be used on
the night.
Arrangements could have
been made for alternate
sulkies to be provided, with
enough notice.
Who knows what the backlash will be over this issue,
however whatever way one
looks at it, harness racing
may never recover.
One must feel sorry for the
Ballarat Club who had nothing to do with the happenings that occurred on the
night.
On a more positive note,
seven year old Western Terror/Corzanello gelding Im
Corzin Terror was victorious
in the big event over 2710
metres, giving part-owner/
trainer Amanda Grieve her
biggest moment in the sport.
Driven a masterly race by
Chris Alford, Im Corzin Terror, one of only two runners
off the front line, led virtually throughout to score by
1.1 metres from the almost
unbackable favourite and
Cranbourne Cup winner of
the previous week Terror
To Love (one/one last lap)
which ran on all too late,
with Uncle Wingnut third
after facing the open for the
final circuit. The mile rate
1-59.7 (last half a slashing
53.9 quarter 26.9).
