ENGLISH
SECTION A

Q1. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below it:
Sound never really made sense except when it was coupled with
words. Nothing in the world is so relaxing as listening to music. The mind moves
to a different plane, never touched by anything else but the notes of the tune
being heard. So enamoured are we by that sound that we wish to hear it again
and again, till we can play it over in our minds without the assistance of an
external device. Even animals respond to the rhythms and tunes of a melodious
piece of music almost instinctively, without the prompting of the master. While
the regular repetition of sounds in music is what gives us pleasure, nothing is
more irritating than listening to an sound which is constantly repeated. The
strange thing is that, though there may be a gap in the comprehension of words
and their meanings, the message of music is clearly conveyed.
This brings us to the a few strange facts. Communication is held to be
chiefly responsible for the making and breaking of many a career and
organisation. Each organisation spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on
setting up appropriate communication channels and improving these
communication skills in their employees. However, Helen Keller was not able to
see or hear. She learnt language through the vibrations caused by each sound.
So unique and intense is this vibration that she could finally build a fairly large
vocabulary and went on to translate our books into Braille. Braille, another tool
often used by the blind, depends on touch for its interpretation. But what of the
dolphin trainer who communicates with his animal through sounds? How did he
learn that language? What school taught the dolphin how to communicate with
his master? Or even stranger how do animals learn the human language and
respond to words used by their human masters or companions? The Gita says
that the world was created by a sound Om and that Sound is God and God is
the Sound. The other holy books hold a somewhat similar view. And there in lies
the clue to all the answers.
