What is SMOKING?
is a practice in which a substance is burned and the resulting smoke breathed in to be tasted or inhaled.
What is CIGARETTE?
Cigarettes are the most dangerous form of tobacco. People breathe the smoke that contains over 200 poisonous
substances that enter their circulatory system and are carried to the bodys cells.
are primarily industrially manufactured but also can be hand-rolled from loose tobacco and rolling paper.
Other smoking implements include pipes, cigars, bidis, hookahs, vaporizers, and bongs. It has been suggested that
smoking-related disease kills one half of all long term smokers but these diseases may also be contracted by nonsmokers.
3 HARMFUL SUBSTANCES IN CIGARETTE
1. Carbon Monoxide
2. Nicotine
3. Tar
CARBON MONOXIDE
Carbon monoxide is a colorless poisonous gas with no smell. It is formed when we burn carbon-based fuels,
such as gas in cookers or petrol in car engines. Cigarette smoke contains almost as much carbon monoxide as it does tar.
Carbon monoxide sticks to our red blood cells in place of oxygen. This lowers our bloods ability to
transport oxygen and deprives our tissues and organs of this vital gas.
NICOTINE
Nicotine is one of the most abundant chemicals in cigarettes and it is what makes cigarettes so addictive.
Nicotine causes addiction in much the same way as heroin or cocaine. It is just as addictive as these
harder drugs which are why it can be so difficult to quit smoking.
TAR
Tar is the collection of solid particles that smokers inhale when they light a cigarette. It is a mixture of lots
of chemicals, many of which can cause cancer. When it settles, tar forms a sticky, brown residue that can stain smokers
teeth, fingers and lungs.

Because tar is listed on packs, it is easy to believe that it is the only harmful part of cigarettes. But some of
the most dangerous chemicals in tobacco smoke are present as gases, and do not count as part of tar. Cigarettes with less
tar still contain toxic chemicals and smokers tend to smoke them differently to get the same nicotine hit so the risk of
lung cancer from smoking low tar cigarettes is not any lower.
Why young people do starts smoking?
1. Young people are attracted to the image:
2. Because their friends and family are smokers
3. Peer influence/ pressure
4. Cultural Influences
Consequences of smoking:
1. Lung cancer
2. Heart Disease
3. Stroke
4. Stomach Cancer
5. Emphysema
6. Bladder Cancer
7. Throat Cancer
8. Cerebrovascular disease
9. Cancer of tongue, esophagus, larynx & pancreas, Gastro-duodenal ulcers
10. Cancer of the cervix and endometrium
11. Cancer of the urinary bladder
12. Still births, abortions
13. Neonatal deaths
14. Fracture of hip, wrist and vertebrae

How Smoking Affects Health?

1. Smoking Affects Fertility. Smoking affects the sexual performance of men and women, and causes fertility
problems. Women smokers who use hormone-based birth control methods such as ring, patch or pills, face increased
risk of suffering health issues like heart attack.
2.

Bad Skin. Smoking narrows blood vessels, which prevents adequate supply of nutrients and oxygen to the skin.
This is the reason why chain smokers look unhealthy and pale. Smoking also increases the risk of getting psoriasis,
which is a skin rash.

3.

Bad Breath. Regular smokers cannot avoid halitosis or chronic bad breath.

4.

Evil-Smelling Hair and Clothes. Stale cigarette smoke lingers on furniture, hair, clothes and inside cars. As a
result, smokers smell bad, which drastically reduces their attractiveness.

5.

Smoking Affects Athletic Performance. Regular smokers become laggards at sports as smoking impacts their
athletic performance. This is because smoking causes shortness of breath, decreased circulation and increased
heartbeat. Smokers also face greater chances of injury due to brittle bones. Their ability to heal is also affected.

6.

Less Immunity. Research reveals that smokers suffer more bouts of pneumonia, bronchitis, flu and colds. Certain
conditions such as asthma become much worse with smoking. Smokers also tend to eat less, which means they do
not get enough nutrients to maintain good health.

7.

Hookahs and Electronic Cigarettes. There are rumors going around that hookahs and electronic cigarettes are
safer than regular cigarettes. This is not true. Hookahs do not have filters. Hence they cannot filter out the harmful
chemicals in tobacco. Besides, hookahs are commonly shared, which increases the risk of spreading germs among
users. Electronic cigarettes contain toxins and carcinogens and do not have FDA approval. Basically, all nicotine
products are harmful, so stay away from all of them.

SIDE EFFECTS OF SMOKING

Smokers have a lower survival rate after surgery compared to that of non-smokers because of damage to the body's host
defenses, delayed wound healing, and reduced immune response.
Smokers are at greater risk for complications following surgery, including wound infections, postoperative pneumonia,
and other respiratory complications.

Periodontitis is a serious gum disease that can result in the loss of teeth and bone loss. Smoking is causally related to
periodontitis. This may be because smoking affects the body's ability to fight infection and repair tissue.
