Writing a Proposal
1

Keep language clear and simple; easy to understand what the aims and the outcome by any
one with background in biology

Repeat key points 4-5 times in the text, written differently

Quote key individuals in the field - they may review the proposal

The best way to learn is to write one

Read successful awards in same or similar fields

Consult with other experts in that field

Have experienced investigators read yours

Find out whether awards were made in recent years in this or similar field

Make sure your literature survey is complete

More Principles for Grant Writing

Proposal
1

Must outline the long term goal of the investigation

Indicate how the short term goal - this proposal fits in the
long term goal

Finish by outlining precisely what will be accomplished at

the end of the funding period

Identify 3-4 key points that are the essence of the

proposal. Repeat them 3-4 times in different places in the
text worded differently.

To be highly Competitive:

The area of investigation must be at the cutting edge the

next piece of information everyone is waiting for - needed to
complete the picture

In the BMS field there is a large gap between the amount of

scientific information generated in the last 2 decades and
direct benefits; translational research is needed to convert
this knowledge into a useable product that benefit
patients/humanity

Hypothesis Driven
The research must set out to prove or disprove a
hypothesis, or several
The specific aims/objectives of the research must be
alined to address them

Must specify what is unique/innovative/how will this

solve the problem being addressed
Extensive relevant literature review (must include all
prominent investigators in the field)
