There is a lot of great info in this book. However, so far I've only seriously studied up to Ch 5 and
I've seen a lot of typos, many of which affect the understanding you might gain from reading that
certain section. Myself and a co-worker have come across multiple mislabeled diagrams and
examples, and contradicting statements. It can be quite frustrating to study with this book. The last
thing I came across that prompted me to finally write this review was a "Do I know this already?"
quiz question that blatantly tells you to choose two answers on a multiple choice, only to flip to the
back of the book to the answers section and find only one option as the answer! I actually think its
not referring to the same question! These are small things, but they add up, and are very annoying. I
have found many more errors in this book, but I won't go into them all. The errors I have found so far
only make me wonder how many I didn't notice, or didn't know enough about to know that they were
wrong, which could potentially be a lot since I'm trying to learn a good portion of this material for the
first time! I am convinced that this book might have been briefly reviewed, but not very well,
technically speaking, and not to the detail level I would expect from a "Certification Guide" published
by the company issuing the certification.
I am wondering why it is that so very many of the books in this series (Cisco) have so many errors.
Is it that they are in a rush to push the product, or is it just too expensive to fix them? I have spent
hours now in triple checking my work because the results don't agree with what a given book says. I
really don't think there is an excuse for this, particularly and especially for technical books that
demand extraordinary accuracy. Would you tell your manager that "Oh, that's not my answer - I
must have made a typo in my report" and not expect some consequences?

This is a great book. However, you really need to have a great understanding of CCNA concepts
first. It assumes you've pretty much mastered all facets of the CCNA. Also, you will need to find your
own labs and do a million of them. If you're planning on taking the exam after just reading this book
you're probably going to fail.
Right now I am studying for my CCNP Route exam , and THANK God , I didn't use this book as my
only resource, because after consulting in international forums, and Cisco forums, I know FOR
SURE, this book alone wouldn't help me at all.. it will bring more confusion than clarity to the already
complicated concepts..
On the whole a fairly good book in my opinion. It helped me pass my ROUTE exam. It's not the
clearest of Ciscopress titles, and there were a lot of errors in the published version (although most of
these have been picked up - the book contains a weblink to the errata details - definitely download
this). Glad to see I'm not the only one who finds IPv6 addresses difficult to write/read! Practice
questions and memory tables are good.
The Kindle version of this book does not include the CDROM or the Boston Exam Environment BEE
activation key(normally found on a piece of paper in the CDROM case on the hard version) which
are usefull revision tools. I bought the Kindle version but have now had to buy the hard version as
well. Some of the illustrations are not very clear due to quality issues on the Kindle version. I am
using Kindle for PC which will make the text larger but will not enlarge the illustrations. I used the
Windows screen magnifier which did not improve the situation as the images are of poor quality to
start with. Otherwise not a bad Kindle book if you buy the hard book as well. Make sure to download
the errata and highlight all issues before reading.
When I first picked up the CCENT book by Wendel a few months ago I was dismayed by his
technical writing but after a few chapters I fell in love with it and embraced his style. Now studying
for CCNP, I find the level of detail perfect and although, as mentioned in a previous review, the book
does introduce some concepts early on that are not fully covered until later, it doesn't do so in a way
that's distracting but rather peaks your interest.
I've also read Implementing IP Routing (ROUTE) after completing this book and I found it boring,
with long chapters (100+ pages) that were just dragging. It truly made me appreciate Wendell's no
nonsense, technical, to the point writing that treats you as an intelligent student. I still recommend
reading both books as there are a few gems in the later that Wendell doesn't mention in his book,
something that seems to be true for all three exams in the current CCNP curriculum - esp SWITCH.
One study source is simply not enough to pass the exams.
Having let my original CCNP lapse a few years ago, I'm thankful the new CCNP books place more
emphasis on the practical implementation and less on the long-winded verbose format that many
Cisco books suffer from. Mind you, at 700+ pages it's still a slog. I'd recommend setting up the
scenarios in each chapter via test kit or GNS3 within each chapter to make the exercises much
more interactive and solidifying.
