PENN SQUALL 40 Service and Maintenance

Service and Maintenance of a Penn Squall 40

Very similar Service instructions to the Penn Fathom with some minor differences.
This is a reel designed for Offshore use. It has a free floating Spool spindle - a spool shaft independent of the spool - resting on ball
bearings located inside the spool. Similar concept to the Penn Torque, which also has no centrifugal braking system; making it
essentially impossible to cast. Out the box, the spool spins for 3 minutes...
This is a an excellent candidate reel to have some Stat Mags fitted to make it controllable for use in SurfCasting.

Remove the LH Side plate...

(For a more in depth tutorial on servicing the Spool bearings and shaft, refer to the Fathom Tutorial..

Inside the LH Side plate. Ratchet and spool bushing.

Bearing retainer in the RHS Frame

Remove the handle and Star Drag..

Remove the washer, Drag spring, and Drag spring washers x2

Remove the RHSide plate, taking note the 2 different lengths of screws

Inside the RH Side plate...

Remove the Drive gear and Drag stack

Underneath the Drive gear is a small Drag washer

The Ratchet Gear and single Dog pawl

Remove the Ratchet gear, dog pawl, Yoke, springs and Pinion gea

Screw retained Drive shaft and Yoke plate

Unscrew the Retainer plate and remove the Drive shaft

The Drive shaft bearing is retained by a large screw

Inside the Side plate is another bearing retainer. Unscrew, service the bearing and replace.

All parts can be cleaned in Benzine, relubed and replaced.

Replace the Ratchet gear and Dog pawl

Proper HT-100 Carbon Drag washer

Replace the Drag washers and Drive gear. Don't forget the Bottom Drag washer (under the Drive gear).

Inspect the RH Side plate inside. The Clutch spring needs to engage the recess in the frame. On this particular reel, the Clutch
spring was half out.

Remove the Cast Control knob and service the parts....

Clean and replace.

The Anti-reverse bearing and inner sleeve...

Replace the RH Side plate...

Note that there are 2 different lengths of screws!

Replace the washers and springs in sequence

Interesting that the Squall doesn't have a Drive shaft bearing at all!? The DrAG Springs rest directly upon the Anti-reverse Inner
sleeve

Replace the Star Drag and washer, and finally the handle.

Small Stat Mag conversion

An impossible reel to cast!
Cut a thin metal strip and bond into RHS plate with Pratleys Quickset.

Added a wide Rare earth magnet - 12mm x 8mm x 2.5mm thick

From 3 mins freespool to 5 seconds with 1 magnet. Will be interesting how easy this reel is to cast with the conversion
Thanks to Isivuba for the use of his reel. Hope you can cast it now!
