Gift exchange dos and donts

Chanukah, Christmas and New
Years Eve are right around the corner.
That means neighborhoods, buildings
and stores will soon be awash in holiday splendor. Social schedules will be
full, and men and women everywhere
will shuffle to complete their holiday
shopping.
Grab bags are a staple of this season
of giving, and the following are a few
dos and donts to ensure participation
in gift exchanges is fun and friendly
for all involved.
DO set a gift amount limit. Holiday grab bags are more about having
fun and exchanging a little something
with friends and family members than
walking away with amazing prizes. Establish a spending limit so everyone
receives a gift of roughly the same value and no one feels slighted or left out.
DONT exceed the spending limit. It
can be tempting to spend more to make
your gift appear more impressive. But
overspending defeats the purpose of
the gift exchange. Grab bags typically
are anonymous, so being overly generous will not win you any style points.
DO make it a game. Tossing gifts
in a bag only to have others reach in
and grab one is certainly effective. But
the concept can be even more fun if
you make a game out of it. Try passing wrapped gifts around in a circle to
a holiday song. When the music stops,
the gift you are holding is the one you
open. Experiment with your own variations to make gift exchanges more
fun.
DONT let anyone see the gift you
bring. The idea is to keep things as se-

that appeal to all ages when necessary.

When the exchange has ended, allow
participants to swap gifts if they want
to.
DO expect some grab bag gifts to
be gag gifts. Such gifts are entertaining and may make up the majority of
the grab bag gifts. Keep your sense of
humor and youre likely to enjoy grab
bags a lot more.
DONT regift items to use as grab
bag picks. Should the person who gave
you the gift participate in the grab bag,
he or she can trace that gift back to you
and may be offended.

Excellent Eggnog

Holiday gift exchanges are all about

having fun and exchanging a little
something with friends and family members than walking way with
amazing prizes.

cretive as possible so as not to sway

the selection of presents.
DO ensure your gift is unisex. Unless you know specifically that only
men or women will be opening the
presents, select items that will appeal
to both genders. Food, gift cards, music, or home staples make great grab
bag gifts.
DONT forget to consider ages as
well. Gift exchanges may include both
children and adults, so include gifts

Ingredients
8
large eggs, preferably organic
2 cups superfine sugar
8
ounces brandy
8
ounces rum
4
ounces bourbon
1
quart milk
Freshly grated nutmeg for garnish
Directions
Separate the egg yolks from the egg whites, setting the whites aside for
a moment. In a large mixing bowl, beat the yolks with a hand mixer until
completely combined. Add the sugar and beat until it reaches a creamy
consistency. Add the brandy, rum and bourbon, and then the milk, beating
well. In a medium-size mixing bowl, beat the egg whites with a hand mixer
until soft peaks form (be sure before beating the whites that you have
cleaned and thoroughly dried the beaters). Fold the egg whites into the
yolk-sugar-alcohol mixture. Refrigerate the mix until well chilled (at least
3 hours). Stir to recombine as needed. Serve the eggnog in mugs, topping
each serving with some nutmeg. Serves 8.

Make the most of poinsettias

The poinsettia is one of the most popular potted flowers in the United States.
It is likely that at least one of the colorful
plants can be found in nearly every household and business during the December
holiday season. Horticulturists with Iowa
State University Extension and Outreach
tell how to select and care for poinsettias
for a perfect holiday display.
What should I look for when purchasing a poinsettia?
Poinsettias are available in red, pink,
white and gold. Variegated and marbled
poinsettias are also available. The colorful part of the poinsettia, commonly referred to as the plants flowers, are actually modified leaves or bracts. The true
flowers are yellow to green, button-like
objects located in the center of the bracts.
When selecting a poinsettia, choose a
plant with dark green foliage and brightly
colored bracts. The true flowers should be
shedding little or no pollen. Avoid poinsettias with wilted foliage, broken stems
or few leaves. Also, check the plant for
insects. Obviously, no one wants to bring
an insect-infested poinsettia into the
home.
How do I care for a poinsettia?
When purchasing a poinsettia, place
the poinsettia in a plant sleeve before
transporting the plant home. Exposure
to freezing temperatures, even for a brief
moment, may cause the leaves to blacken
and drop. Once inside the home, remove
the poinsettia from its sleeve and place
it near a sunny window or other well-lit
area. However, dont let the plant touch
the cold window pane. Also, keep the
poinsettia away from cold drafts or heat
outlets. Poinsettias prefer temperatures
between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
The water needs of a poinsettia can be

determined with your finger. Check the

potting soil daily. When the soil surface
becomes dry to the touch, water the plant
until water begins to flow out the bottom
of the pot. If the pot is wrapped in decorative foil, punch a hole in the foil at the
bottom of the pot for water drainage and
place a saucer underneath the pot. Discard the excess water which drains into
the saucer. Today, most poinsettia growers and florists use molded plastic pot
covers rather than foil. When watering
these plants, carefully remove the poinsettia from the pot covering, water the
plant in the sink, then drop it back into
the molded pot cover. Improper watering will negatively impact the poinsettias
health and appearance. Over-watering
may cause yellowing of the lower leaves,
leaf drop and the sudden death of the
plant. Under-watering may cause curling
of leaves and leaf drop.
If given good care, poinsettias should
remain attractive for several weeks, well
after the Christmas and New Years Day
holidays.
Is the poinsettia poisonous?
The poinsettia has long been regarded
as poisonous. However, research conducted at various institutions has shown
the poinsettia is not poisonous. While
the poinsettia is not poisonous, it is not
intended for human or animal consumption. Individuals are still advised to keep
the poinsettia out of the reach of small
children and pets.
One potential health problem associated with the poinsettia is dermatitis or
an irritation to the skin. When a poinsettia stem is cut or broken, milky sap oozes
from the wound. Some individuals may
develop a skin irritation if the milky sap
comes in contact with their skin.

2 tablespoons minced fresh ginger root
2 limes, juiced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon soy sauce
teaspoon white sugar
teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
2 pounds large cooked shrimp, peeled, tails on

Chocolate Peppermint Cookies

Ingredients
4
ounces semisweet chocolate, broken up
cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
1
cup sugar
2
eggs
1 cups all-purpose flour

teaspoon salt
2
tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1
teaspoon mint extract
4
ounces white chocolate, broken up

teaspoon vegetable oil

12 starlight candies, crushed, or 1/3 cup crushed candy canes
Directions
Heat oven to 325 degrees. Butter two large baking sheets. Place chocolate in microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 1 minute, then stir until
smooth. Let cool 5 minutes. Beat butter and sugar in a large bowl until
blended. Beat in cooled chocolate. Add eggs and beat until smooth. Stir in
flour, salt and cocoa powder until a soft dough forms. Beat in mint extract.
Drop dough by tablespoonfuls onto prepared baking sheets. Bake for 18
minutes or until dry on top. Transfer to wire rack to cool. While cookies
cool, combine white chocolate and oil in glass bowl. Microwave 30 seconds, stir; then microwave another 30 seconds. Stir until smooth. Spoon
about 1 teaspoon white chocolate onto each cookie, then top each with
1/2 teaspoon of the crushed candies. Let stand to harden for 30 minutes.
Store airtight up to two weeks. Makes 2-1/2 dozen cookies.

Has gift wrapping become a lost art?

Have we become a society that is too
busy for gift wrap? When a birthday arrives or the holidays come around in full
force, where do most people turn? To the
ultra-convenient gift bag, that's where.
Gift bags have largely taken over the
party aisles at most stores, where rows
and rows of gift bags in all shapes and
sizes are not uncommon. If you're trying to find a roll of wrapping paper, good
luck. For birthdays, anniversaries and
even baby showers, paper designs have
essentially become obsolete.
It's true that wrapping paper seems
to make a rebound come the holiday
season, when stores begin to devote
aisles of space to holiday supplies. But
even when shiny foils and smiling Santas beckon customers from the tightly
packed rolls, many people still choose
gift bags.
Gift bags do have many advantages.
They are easily portable, generally inexpensive and come in some very clever
designs. They're also touted as a "green"
product because they can be reused.
But there are plenty of people who
feel that the elimination of intricately
wrapped presents takes some of the
magic out of the holidays. Carefully
wrapped gifts show that a person put
in time and effort to present a gift in a
way that is sentimental and personal.
Although it may take mere minutes to
pry away the paper and find a treasure
inside, there's something to be said for
paper-wrapped gifts. It means the giftgiver sat down, pondered the paper design and carefully chose the bow or ribbon with the recipient in mind.
Before you eschew wrapping paper
for a gift bag this holiday season, think
about all of the advantages to spending

some time and reacquainting yourself

with the art of gift wrapping. Here are
some reasons to save the gift bag for another time.
* Wrapping can be green, too. Wrapping paper can be reused if it is carefully
removed from a gift. You also can create
your own wrapping paper by decorating
brown postal paper with a rubber stamp
or having children color their own special murals. Don't overlook newsprint as
wrapping as well.
* Paper is more cost-effective. You are
bound to get more bang for your wrapping buck by choosing wrapping paper.
Although there are scores of discount
stores that sell low-priced gift bags, often the quality isn't the same, and the
handles could tear after one or two uses.
Wrapping paper per inch is definitely
more affordable than gift bags, particularly when purchased on sale.
* Wrapping paper lets you be creative.
Cover a box with a patchwork of different paper scraps, choose to stagger colors of paper with boxes towered one on
top of another or tie on the biggest bow
you can find.
* Paper is traditional. Look back to
the classic stories of yuletide and you
are bound to find images of Santa Claus
pulling wrapped boxes out of his enormous gift sack. Also think about how department stores used to (and some still
do) offer complimentary gift wrapping.
* Wrapped gifts travel better. When
carrying your bounty of gifts to friends
and family, carefully wrapped boxes
tend to stand up to travel better than
gift bags. No one wants to receive a gift
bag that has been wrinkled and crushed
into some amorphous shape. Plus, wilted tissue paper can be off-putting.

Family stories a Great Gift Ideas

There is no better time to begin a

tradition of family storytelling than
during the holidays.

Studies have shown that sharing

family stories may be as beneficial to
children as reading to them; in fact,
storytelling may even provide additional bonuses.
When parents tell detailed family
stories to their children, kids tend to
view their family as stronger and may
have higher self-esteem, lower levels
of anxiety or nervousness, and fewer behavioral problems, said Laura
Froyen, an early parenting specialist
with the University of WisconsinExtension. Kids whose families regularly tell family stories tend to be
better storytellers themselves, which
can positively influence school performance.
There is no better time to begin a
tradition of family storytelling than
the holidays, according to Froyen.
Often holidays stand out in our
minds when time has faded other
memories. Families can draw on holiday memories not only to cement
family values and traditions, but to
connect children with their familys

past, she said. At the holidays, stories can serve as a chance to reconnect
with more distant family members
and to show how important each family member is.
Tweens and teens whose parents
engage in storytelling have a deeper
understanding of their family history, and as a result, feel more secure
in their own identity. These teenagers
also tend to have better coping skills
and feel less anxious and depressed.
Froyen pointed out that not every
story needs to be completely positive.
Stories can be a great way to teach and
to show that everyone makes mistakes. Just be sure to make the lesson
of the story clear for young children,
said Froyen.
Froyen said she found many lessons in stories told to her by her parents. I still like hearing them as an
adult, especially now that Im a parent, she said. This is one of the great
things about stories--you can tell the
same one over and over, and still find
something new, as both the teller and
the listener.
If family storytelling is new to you,
Froyen suggested some activities to
get started:
Put everyones names in a hat and
then have each family member draw
a name and tell a story involving that
person.
Instead of asking what everyone is
grateful for at Thanksgiving, ask each
person to describe a memory that
they are grateful to have, or a lesson
they are grateful to have learned.
Have everyone tell the story of
the best gift (birthday, holidayit
doesnt matter) that theyve received.
Be sure to encourage details like how
they felt waiting for the gift, when
they realized what it was, who gave
it, how they thanked the person who
gave the gift, etc. Parents and children
alike may be surprised by the answers.

Traditions of Three Kings Day

Christmas celebrants realize that the holiday season does not end on Dec. 26 or
even Jan. 2. For many people, Christmas and New Years Eve are merely a prelude to
the real celebration to come on Three Kings Day.
Three Kings Day, or Da de los Trs Reyes, is celebrated on Jan. 6 to honor the wise
men who visited and brought gifts to Jesus Christ. Also known as the Epiphany, the
holiday marks the end of the Christmas season for many practicing Christians.
Very little is known about the kings, or magi. These kings, who are only mentioned once in the Gospel of Matthew, are never named. The story says they hail
from the east and are guided to the manger by a mysterious light in the sky. They
begin a journey to bring gold, frankincense and myrrh to the newborn king. Unbeknownst to many, the popular song The 12 Days of Christmas actually marks the
12 days following Christmas, ending on the Feast of the Epiphany, and not the 12
days preceding Christmas Day.
Many traditions are associated with the Epiphany. Celebrants in Mexico serve
Rosca de Reyes, an oval-shaped cake that symbolizes a crown. The cake has a small
doll inside that represents baby Jesus and the hiding of Jesus from King Herods
troops. Herod ordered his soldiers to seek out and murder all male infants born in
Bethlehem in retaliation of the prophecy that a messiah would come and become the
new King of Jerusalem.
Roscas can be made with dried and candied fruits to symbolize the jewels that
adorn real crowns. Whoever receives the plastic doll in his or her slice of cake is expected to throw a party on Di de la Candelaria (Candlemas Day), which occurs each
year on Feb. 2.
Unlike in the United States, where gifts are typically exchanged on Christmas Day,
much of the Latin community exchange gifts on the eve of Jan. 6. Puerto Rican children have been known to gather grass or straw in shoeboxes for the kings horses or
camels. Some families display carvings and artwork of the three magi atop camels.
Many celebrants participate in Three Kings Day parades and festivals. Family
gatherings and parties that would rival other special holidays are common as well. A
special meal consisting of corn tamales and hot chocolate may be served, while others may enjoy black beans, picadillo and yucca.
Who were the kings?
While the Bible does not indicate how many kings visited Jesus on the Epiphany,
based on the number of gifts offered, historians believe there were three. Historians
and theologians believe these kings were Babylonians, Persians or Jews from Yemen.
In the Western Christian church, the kings go by the names of Melchior (a Persian
scholar), Caspar (an Indian scholar) and Balthazar (an Arabian scholar). The kings
also were said to have distinct physical characteristics. Caspar, who brought the
gift of gold, was the oldest and sported a long, white beard. Middle-aged Melchior
brought the gift of frankincense, while Balthazar, who brought myrrh, is believed to
have been a dark-skinned young man around the age of 20.
