Women in Engineering Dinner

I joined SWE to narrow down my career path

and because of these experiences I am readying
to graduate with an impossibly limitless future.
SWE does not manufacture engineers, but
allows bright young women to discover how
engineering can challenge their passions and
mature their dreams into goals.
During this year of my
presidency, I sincerely
hope you had similar
experiences and are
encouraged to continue pursuing them with
our next president,
Samantha Schneider.
It has been a privilege
to lead the Drexel
chapter and my best
wishes to the new
Board of Directors,
who are already working hard to ensure an
even more inspiring
2015. You will all do
extraordinary things.

Letter from the president

Four years ago I became a member of Drexel
SWE because I didnt fully understand how to
be an engineer. I thought that by joining SWE, I
would network, attend workshops, and acquire
mentors in order to learn what a good engineer did so that I could mold myself into one.
Looking back, I realize my experience has been
far from that.
I went from nervous, timid, disengaged
member to chair, then on to director, before
finally becoming president, and in that short
time I saw myself completely transform. Admittedly, I do still get nervous, but no longer is it
before I raise my hand in class, but to walk
across a stage and accept a national award on

Membership Committee:
GEneral Body Meeting

On Tuesday 10/28, Drexels Chapter of Society

of Women Engineers held their Fall General
Body Meeting in the Mechanical Engineering
and Mechanics Seminar Room. In the meeting,
five members of the Drexel SWE board presented on some background of the organization,
lessons learned from National Conference,
upcoming events, benefits of both chapter and
society level membership, and details about
open chair positions to twenty student members. Students asked questions about different
positions and how to get involved in attending
and planning events.

history of the Drexel SWE chapter, upcoming

events and opportunities for involvement.

Wellness Committee:
Toned Tuesday

As Wellness Committee, we devote ourselves to

helping girls balance their time with academics
and social life. Its very challenging for college
students to prioritize their schedules correctly
and live a healthy lifestyle. A weekly event that
weve been having for almost a year now is
Toned Tuesdays and Wellness Wednesdays.
These are voluntary workouts that the wellness
committee bases around you and your
strengths. Depending on who shows up, they
tell us what they want to work on, improve, or
learn more about and we throw together a one
hour workout that we do together!

Healthy Living Seminar

Another great event the Wellness Committee
put together was the Healthy Living Seminar.
We had five amazing women who are in the
engineering industry come and speak to us
about how they try their best to live a healthy
lifestyle.

General Body Meeting

After the SWE board presented, the Drexel

Chapters Advisor, Alisa Morse Clyne, spoke on
her journey as an engineer. She spoke about her
involvement in SWE and her experience as a
founding member of the Stanford Chapter of
SWE. She went on to explain her research on
Biomechanics in the department of Mechanical
Engineering and Mechanics at Drexel University. She encouraged students to get involved in
research and offered her help and support to
those students wishing to connect with professors.
At the end of the meeting, two Drexel SWE officers led a fun activity where teams of three to
four members raced to identify types of candy
based on their slogans. The winning team successfully identified all but one of the types of
candy and was then awarded with some delicious candy. In all, it was a successful event that
informed new members of the

Drexel SWE members and professional speakers

These women in engineering varied in ages and

careers. They explained how they handle having
a family, being a professional engineer, working
out, eating healthy, having down time, how to
not be stressed and slow things down to learn to
enjoy life. Its not easy being an

engineer and having a life outside of it! It was

comforting for everyone who came to see that
you can have many hobbies outside of your academics or career. It was a great event because it
was more focused on mental wellness instead of
physical wellness. We definitely want to repeat
an event based around mental wellness again
soon because mental is just as important as
physical wellness!

company. The application process for Spire was

also discussed in good detail, followed by an
active question and answer session, where
students asked many questions and received a
lot of information about STEM field jobs and
about what Spire does specifically.

Professional Development:
workshop with spire

Spire, a satellite and space company, conducted

a workshop on Thursday, October 9th, to provide information to Drexel students about the
company and to discuss several topics that
would appeal to students who will be looking for
a permanent job soon. Fourteen students
attended the event and two employers from
Spire were present to discuss both the business
and the engineering aspects of the company,
which made for a very great discussion on the
various facets of Spire.

Q&A Session

This workshop done with Spire was very successful and the students gained a lot from it. It
was very intimate, thorough, and interactive,
allowing the students to really understand what
Spire employers are looking for and what other
employers look for when hiring. The event was a
great start to the various professional development workshops planned for the rest of the
term!

Evonik Oil Additives info session

On Thursday, October 23rd, Evonik Oil Additives held an information session and Pizza
Social to introduce the company and to get to
know the attendees. Evonik Oil Additives is a
chemical engineering company and one of the
worlds leading specialty chemical organizations. Twenty-two students attended the
session and eight employers/co-op students led
the session and interactive workshop.
A brief presentation was given to introduce the
students to the company and detail what different processes Evonik is involved in, as well as
what the most local site does. A workshop was
then conducted to discuss two topics: a male
society and the work/life balance. Everyone was
divided into two groups and the groups
discussed both topics alongside the employers,
which was a great learning experience for the
employers as well as the students.

Spire presents to Drexel students

The workshop began with a presentation of the

company, its vision and mission, and what is
currently done on a day-to-day basis. Then, several matters were discussed regarding aerospace and working in STEM in general. Some of
these topics included: working at a large company as opposed to working at a startup; how
aerospace is the upcoming technology sector;
important skills to develop to be a more competitive candidate for STEM jobs; applying lean
development practices to hardware. This was a
very informal and interactive session where
students could gain some insight into what is
available for them if they choose to work for this

Both benefitted from hearing what this generation thought about those topics and how it
differed from what the employers thought.

which collaborated with both the Society of

Women Engineers and the National Society of
Black Engineers. This event had a turnout at
full capacity, with over forty student attendees
ranging from various engineering majors and
academic years. As a company, Lockheed
Martin focuses on global security and aerospace, working to solve some of the most challenging and exciting engineering, information
systems, and software development problems
in the world.

Drexel Students take notes and listen attentively

This activity was followed by a raffle. This

workshop highly relied on the audiences input,
which it received because everyone was always
participating and offering opinions. There was
a lot of enthusiasm in terms of the company
and the activity, which sparked interest in
many of the students to ask questions.
This Evonik information session and Pizza
Social informed and excited everyone because
it was all very engaging.

Fun raffle and social with Evonik

The questions and answers were also helpful

because the panel that Evonik had consisted of
everyone from a co-op student to an employer
with a lifetime of experience at this company.
Overall, this session left the employers and the
students satisfied, and it kept the momentum
of the professional development workshops
going!

Lockheed Martin Tech workshop

Lockheed Martin held an informational Technical Workshop on Thursday, October 14th,

Lockheed Martin speakers and presentation

At this event, both the company speakers held

the titles as Technical Managers. They focused
on some of their current and new technologies
being used in our highly competitive, high
technology, worldwide marketplace. They each
first presented their interactive audio-video
presentation, and then transformed the setting
into a discussion with the attendees. Moreover,
they educated the students on the necessary
skills to be successful in the technical positions
at Lockheed Martin, many of which apply
mathematical and physics knowledge. Among
the areas of application for their technology
were: Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Finance.
Towards the end of the event, a brief Question
and Answer session took place, during which
many of the student attendees also had the
opportunity to address their questions in a
one-on-one basis with the speakers. At the
conclusion of the event, Lockheed Martins
campus recruiter shared with SWE the job
description for an open full-time position. This
job description was then shared with all our
members to apply as interested, and gain
further insights into the position by continuing
correspondence with the campus recruiter.

networking committee:

following weekend of WE 14. We shared past

event ideas and overall was a successful collaborative event. SWEFL Danielle Schroeder said
"It was wonderful to be able to meet with another collegiate SWE group to gain more ideas for
this upcoming Winter Term. I even met one girl
who also be attending the Collegiate Leadership
Institute at WE 14, so it was great to have a
friendly face when attending that program."
This was an effective event and plan to hold
future events like these as it becomes closer to
Region E conference.

mentorship meet & Greet

On October 18th, the Drexel SWE Freshman

Mentorship Program had its annual Mentor
Mentee Meet & Greet. The Freshman Mentorship Program was established, last year by the
Networking Team, in order to make the transition from high school to college much easier for
Freshman girls. The goal is to provide each girl
with a mentor early on in her college career,
who will guide her on the right path in becoming a strong and confident engineer. This event
gave mentors and mentees the opportunity to
mingle and learn more about each other. It
included delicious snacks and three rounds of
Minute to Win It games. The games consisted
of Candy Elevator, This Blows, and Separation
Anxiety. Each mentor-mentee pair teamed up
to work through these team building activities.
In the end, the winners were Aakansha Nangarlia and Alyssa Norbury, who received a $25 gift
card. We would like to thank all the mentors
and mentees who were able to attend this event
and make it a success. We would also like to
thank the current mentors for their hard work
and dedication to make this program a success.
If you are currently a Freshman female who
would like a mentor, please visit the Mentorship
tab on the Drexel SWE website for more information.

Public Relations & professional

development collaboration:
college-to-career program

The College-to-Career Readiness Program

works to create an interactive experience for our
members to help them prepare for interviews,
co-op, or any other professional environment.
This program provides opportunities to members to have their resumes and cover letters
reviewed by officers, as well as be able to schedule mock interview sessions with them.

The Sunday before National Conference, October 19th, Drexel SWE officers met with a few
Penn SWE officers at Yogorino to discuss the

Networking at Yogorino!

College-to-Career Website

Additionally, every week, two challenging interview questions are posted on Facebook and
LinkedIn, and members provide example
answers and feedback on how they would tackle
them. So far, the bi-weekly posts have also
included other preparation tips, such as preparing for a 30-second pitch for career fairs and
writing thank you letters after an interview. The
College-to-Career Readiness Program website
is under progress and will contain a collection of
Professional Development tips for resumes,
cover letters, interviews, and many more. Keep
a look out for the website in Winter term!

Women in engineering welcome dinner

Following her presentation, attendees were

encouraged to network and complete the trivia
quizzes on their tables.

The Women in Engineering Welcome Event

was held on Friday, September 26 during Welcome Back Week, the first week of fall term. The
goal of the dinner was to bring together new
students, current students, alumni and faculty/staff members in an effort to provide networking and mentoring opportunities. There
were over 112 attendees and others who stopped
by the Bossone atrium to see what was going on!

Trivia and networking session!

Answers to the quizzes were announced and

raffle baskets were awarded. Victoria Cahn,
Manager of Outreach Programs in the Office of
the Dean for the College of Engineering, said of
the event, "I was really impressed with the turnout at the Welcome Dinner. It was great to see
so many students come out to support women
in Engineering. It was also inspiring to listen to
the board members talk about how much SWE
has meant to them and how they are giving back
by serving in leadership roles." In case you
missed the fun, here are some of the trivia questions!

Attendees listen attentively to Drexel SWE President

The event served as a celebration of the history

of Drexel SWE through the center piece on each
table -- photographs and biographies of Drexel
SWE alumni, women engineers, and their supporters, who helped found the Drexel section.
Each of the Drexel SWE officers introduced
themselves and described their interests and
pathway at Drexel. They also described opportunities to be involved with future activities
such as outreach workshops, the mentorship
