Surah As Saba 13

Little are the Thanks

That We Give to Allah

In the name of Allah the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
Allah SWT has created this universe. The climax of His creation is the human being which
has superiority with clear distinction over other creation such as the animals, mountains,
the sky, the sun, the moon, stars, etc.
One of the most important points of the superiority of the human being over all the other
creation is the fact that Allah swt granted us the tongue. The tongue has the ability to
speak, communicate, express and explain different ideas in different ways.

No other creation has the ability or power that the human being has.

The Most Merciful

Taught the Qur'an,

Created man,

[And] taught him eloquence.

Surah 55 Ayat 1-4

In the ayaat above Allah SWT explains the importance of the gift of the tongue granted
to the human being so as to explain the most important miracle, the Holy Quran to the
human being.

[We sent them] with clear proofs and written ordinances. And We revealed to you the
message that you may make clear to the people what was sent down to them and that
they might give thought.
Surah 16: Ayah 44
1

O Messenger, announce that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you
do not, then you have not conveyed His message.
Surah 5: Ayah 67

In the above ayah Allahswt asks Mohammudsaw to explain the Holy Quran to human
beings through the opportunity of using the tongue.
------------------KEY
1. SWT---Pure, Flawless, Full of Glory.
2. SAW---May Allahswt send His Blessings and Mercy upon Him
3. AS--- May Allah SWTs Mercy be upon Him or Her

We should be grateful to Allah swt for granting us such a nice and wonderful gift through
which we can convey the message of Allah swt to humanity.

So have they not traveled through the earth and have hearts by which to reason and
ears by which to hear? For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the
hearts which are within the breasts.
Surah 22: Ayah 46

In this Ayah Allahswt says that people do not use the eyes of their heart to look at nature
and learn lessons from it. This is not because their normal eyes are blind, but the eyes
of their heart are blind.
People who do not believe in Allahswt do have eyes to see, but they cannot see the
signs of nature and the amazing universe around them to recognize their Creator. The
eyes of their hearts are blind, so they remain disbelievers.
When a dog sees that a car is coming, he moves away and saves his life. But this
seeing is different from the seeing of the heart. A heart sees facts, recognizes nature
and its usefulness. It also guides us towards the Real Creator of the universe, which
helps us believe in Him and leads us to a true peaceful life.
Thus we should be grateful to Allahswt for granting us real eyes which are beneficial to
this world as well as the life in the hereafter.

Then He proportioned him and breathed into him from His [created] soul and made for
you hearing and vision and hearts; little are you grateful.
Surah 32, Ayah 9

When a person uses all the organs mentioned in the above ayah properly, they play an
important role in their lives. For example, when they look around and observe nature
(which Allahswt has created) such as trees, fruits, vegetables, animals, birds, fish etc.,
then the person realizes its importance and purpose.
Thus, we should thank and appreciate our Creator who has granted us so many
different kinds of food for our sustenance.

Then do they not look at the camels - how they are created?

And at the sky - how it is raised?

And at the mountains - how they are erected?

And at the earth - how it is spread out?
Surah 88: Ayah 17-20

Unfortunately, we dont look around nor do we thank Allahswt for His generous gifts for
us.

Indeed, within the heavens and earth are signs for the believers.

And in the creation of yourselves and what He disperses of moving creatures are signs
for people who are certain [in faith].

And [in] the alternation of night and day and [in] what Allahswt sends down from the sky
of provision and gives life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and [in His] directing
of the winds are signs for a people who reason

These are the verses of Allah swt which We recite to you in truth. Then in what statement
after Allah swt and His verses will they believe?
Surah 45: Ayat 3-6
4

Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and
the day are signs for those of understanding.
Surah 3: Ayah 190

Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and earth, and the alternation of the night and the
day, and the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people,
and what Allah swt has sent down from the heavens of rain, giving life thereby to the
earth after its lifelessness and dispersing therein every [kind of] moving creature, and
[His] directing of the winds and the clouds controlled between the heaven and the earth
are signs for a people who use reason.
Surah 2: Ayah 164

All the verses above mention the signs of Allah SWT, to enable us to recognize His power
and mercy on us. By using the different organs granted to us by Allah SWT we can
appreciate and realize His Divine Power. We must believe in Him as our One and only
Creator, Sustainer and Nourisher. Although animals also have ears, eyes, a tongue
and heart, they do not have the sense or ability to look around nature nor to think about
the purpose of creation. Their main purpose of life is mere survival
In the following pages we will notice that there are several occasions in our life where
Allah SWT deserves our thanks but unfortunately we do not offer our gratitude to Him.
That is why AllahSWT correctly says in the Holy Quran that very few people among His
servants are grateful to Him.

Allah SWT has not only granted us our food from the earth but also He has granted us
the ability to use sea and air for our needs as well. Day and night we run ships on the
sea for several purposes such as business around the world, transporting shipments of
different commodities, as well as in search for food such as fish and other seafood, a
good healthy meal.
These are all possible because of the mercy of our Creator who deserves our gratitude.

It is Allah swt who created the heavens and the earth and sent down rain from the sky
and produced thereby some fruits as provision for you and subjected for you the ships
to sail through the sea by His command and subjected for you the rivers.

And He subjected for you the sun and the moon, continuous [in orbit], and subjected for
you the night and the day.

And He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the favor of Allah
SWT, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust and
ungrateful.
Surah 14: Ayah 32-34

By His mercy Allah swt has granted us the unlimited choice and control which we enjoy
in our daily life.
We comfortably fly planes every day in a very short time from one country to another.
Similarly we drive a car comfortably in a short time from one city to another and many
times sail comfortably on the ships from one place to another. These are all things we
should be grateful to Allah swt for.
There are certain animals which Allah has granted us control over. We use them as
transportation and some we eat as well. For all these blessings, we should be grateful
to Allah swt.

Do they not see that We have created for them from what Our hands have made,
grazing livestock, and [then] they are their owners?

And We have tamed them for them, so some of them they ride, and some of them they
eat.

And for them therein are [other] benefits and drinks, so will they not be grateful?
Surah 36: Ayah 71-73
7

Apart from that, Allah SWT has also granted us the ability to invent a lot of things for our
daily use. Some examples the manufacturing of heavy equipment which we use for
agricultural purposes, construction of machinery for multi-story buildings, dams, bridges
and electric generating machines. There are several hundred types of equipment which
the human being invents and runs with full power and control to fulfill his needs.
The fact is that Allah swt is the real Creator of human beings and they, with the help of
Allah, are able to make all the above machines. So it is not the human being who
deserves the gratitude, but it is Allah SWT who is the real Creator of everything and
deserves our gratitude.

And that those who do not believe in the Hereafter - We have prepared for them a
painful punishment.
Surah 17: Ayah 10

Sometimes we have extra time where we just relax in bed or sit on the couch. Even
during these moments we should remember and thank Allah Why should we thank Allah
SWT?
For the many blessings granted to us by Allah SWT all the time. While lying in bed we
should think I am breathing properly by the mercy of Allah SWT which means my
respiratory system is working well, so I am alive and healthy. My heart is functioning
well, which means the circulatory system seems to be working well, and so on. Overall,
different organs of my body seem to be working fine, again with the help of Allah SWT
which is why I am alive and healthy and today. These are just a few reasons we should
be thankful to Allah SWT all the time. This remembrance and gratitude to Allah SWT is not
a waste of time. On the other hand we will InshaAllah see the reward of this from Allah
SWT on the day of judgment.
Another thing we should remember is that if someone brings us a glass of water or
juice, then the very first thing we should do is to thank Allah SWT. First quietly, in your
heart thank Allahswt because to begin with, Allahswt is the One with whose help and
permission that person was able to bring you that water or juice. Also Allahswt is the one
who gave health to the person who brought the water or juice to you. These are
8

examples of different ways Allahswt aids us. This aid occurs in any case, we may or may
not know in detail but Allah SWT knows all the details and deserves our gratitude for all
the hidden help He offers us.
Therefore, if a person helps you in any way, the very first thing to do is to thank Allahswt
entirely either quietly in our heart, or verbally (which is a better habit). Then it is
important to thank that person or people who helped you.
As the Prophet saw said :
"Whoever is not grateful to the people, he is not grateful to Allah swt."

"

"
Jami` at-Tirmidhi
Apart from that Allahswt says in the Holy Quran that in any case whether you thank
Allahswt or not, it does not make any difference to Him. Neither will it increase His power
and position nor will it decrease it.
If we thank Allahswt it will be for our own sake, and if we do not it will not affect anyone
but ourselves because Allahswt does not need anything from us nor from anyone else. In
conclusion it makes no difference to Allahswt but it does make a difference to us.
As Allah swt says:

And We had certainly given Luqman wisdom [and said], "Be grateful to Allahswt." And
whoever is grateful is grateful for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever denies [His favor]
- then indeed, Allahswt is Free of need and Praiseworthy.
Surah 31: Ayah 12

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase
you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.' "

And Moses said, "If you should disbelieve, you and whoever is on the earth entirely indeed, Allah SWT is Free of need and Praiseworthy."
Surah 14: Ayah 7 and 8

Allahswt also says in the Holy Quran that He has granted human beings, a tongue, ears,
eyes and heart. He will ask him whether he used those organs properly, according to
Islamic way of life or not.

And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight
and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
Surah 17: Ayah 36

Then, on that Day, you shall be asked about the delight (you indulged in, in this world)!
Surah 102: Ayah 8

There are different ways to thank Allahswt. You can thank Allahswt quietly in your heart or
verbally by uttering some nice words of gratitude to Him.
Another way to thank Allahswt, (which is the best way) is by performing two rakahs of
prayer just for that purpose.
10

Besides all the different ways to thank Allahswt mentioned above, we should also realize
that there are many occasions in our daily life where we are extremely blessed by
Allahswt. We should thank our kind Creator for them.
Allahswt by His blessing, grants us and our families health, food, shelter, a car, job,
clothing etc. We use them every day but do we ever think of thanking Allahswt for
showering those blessings upon us?
The more we thank Allahswt the more we will get in return InshAllah.

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase
you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.' "
Surah 14: Ayah 7

Imagine if someone gives you a gift and you dont thank that person, how will that
person feel about you? In the same way when Allahswt by His mercy, grants us so many
things every day without us even asking, how will Heswt feel about us? That is why
Allahswt says in the Holy Quran that He has given us so many blessings but we are
ungrateful to Him.

It is Allahswt who created the heavens and the earth and sent down rain from the sky and
produced thereby some fruits as provision for you and subjected for you the ships to sail
through the sea by His command and subjected for you the rivers.

And He subjected for you the sun and the moon, continuous [in orbit], and subjected for
you the night and the day.
11

And He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the favor of Allah
SWT , you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust and
ungrateful.
Surah 14: Ayah 32-34

In the above Ayaat Allahswt tells us that He has given us everything we asked for but we
are still unjust and ungrateful to Him.
Besides the above mentioned unlimited blessings Allah swt has granted us, there are
some other specific times in our daily life in which we should offer our thanks to Allah
swt. We can do this in the form of Dua which is the Sunnah (tradition) of our Prophet
Mohammudsaw. For example when we start eating or drinking, and after we complete
our meal we should recite a dua. Likewise when we go out and return home safely,
when we sleep and wake up daily. Also when we enter the washroom and exit, when
we look in the mirror, when we start and when we drive our car, when we enter the
masjid and when we come out of the masjid etc etc. (Such Duas are found in the Quran
books of Ahadees---the sayings of Prophet Mohammud). Apart from the above Duas
there are several other occasions where we should thank Allahswt and recite the Duas
which our beloved Prophet Mohammud used to recite regularly. If we do not recite them
it is as if we are spending our life in the disobedience of our Creator as well as our
Prophet Mohammud saw. On the other hand if we follow the sunnah we will be obeying
and pleasing our Creator.

May Allahswt help us and guide us to the straight path Ameen.
May Allahswt send His mercy and blessings on our Prophet
Mohammud forever and ever Ameen.
