can solve the slaying of a 12-year-old girl
more than five decades ago in northeast
Ohio.
Marion Brubakers body was recently
exhumed in Summit County to provide a DNA
sample and fingernail clippings for testing by
the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
Authorities say the girl was attacked and
killed as she rode her bike home in an Akron
suburb in the summer of 1962. Her body and
bike were found in a wooded area in Coventry
Township.
Detectives theorized then that sexual
assault was the motive for the girls strangulation death, although tests showed no evidence
of rape.
The Akron Beacon Journal reports that a
teenage boy who reported finding the body has

scratches. He was never charged.
Now 67, he was recently questioned again

Boggs

... a human resources director

BY JIM LANGHAM
DHI Media Correspondent
news@delphosherald.com

It was 37 years ago when

Donna Grimm approached
Linda Boggs about becoming part of the team of her
newly-formed organization, Community-Health

Professionals. At that time,

the widely-known health
organization was only 2
years old.
Donna approached me
and asked me if I would
work for her, recalled
Boggs. At that time she
was looking for an administrative assistant.

That was 1977. Linda

and her husband had moved
to Van Wert from Columbus
where she had received a
business degree from Bliss
Business College. My business teacher in high school
was an excellent teacher. He
encouraged me in that area
and my mother encouraged

me to get higher education,

recalled Boggs.
Boggs was originally
from Delphos and had graduated from Jefferson High
School. After she was married, she and her husband
had lived in Missouri and
Alabama before returning to
Columbus and then moving
to Van Wert.
Initially, Boggs had
served as an administrative
assistant. During that time,
she also concentrated on
more education pertaining to
her position. Twenty-years
ago, she moved into the
office of human resources
director and has been there
ever since.
I enjoyed working
for Community Health
Professionals, Boggs said.
I knew a lot about the
position. I enjoyed working with my co-workers and
Donna. She was a fantastic
visionary. I loved working
with the people that surrounded me.
I was a little apprehensive whether or not I could
handle this position at first,
but I had been here 17 years
at the time, long enough that
my knowledge of this place
had grown with me, continued Boggs.
For the past 20 years,
Boggs has been working
with employees to make sure
they receive all that they are
entitled to in their jobs. She

oversees benefits, workers

compensation, assists them
if they need to be off work
because of health needs and
is there for them if they simply need someone to talk to
about work concerns.
Boggs said that it is her
responsibility to make sure
that employees are satisfied
with their jobs. If issues
arise, she does what she
can to help them. If special
needs arise, she does what
she can to listen to them and
encourage them.
My heart is in this; I try
to be a good listener, Boggs
said. If they need someone
to talk to, I want this to be
someplace where they can
come and know that it is
going to be kept confidential. I try to work with them
if they have special circumstances.
If they have health
needs, I try to do what I can
to help that area of their life
while they recover, continued Boggs. They can be off
work and take care of their
health issues and then return
to their job.
One thing Boggs really
appreciates is the family
spirit within the organization. She noted that her
greatest fulfillment is to see
them work with their clients
and feel good about themselves and their job.

INFORMATION SUBMITTED

ALLEN COUNTY To prevent fatal

as well as serious injury crashes, local law
enforcement agencies in Allen County will be
out in full force from now until Jan. 4, looking for and cracking down on impaired drivers
this holiday season.
The financial cost of an impaired driving
arrest is high but they do not stop with the
obvious fines. An arrest for operating a vehicle impaired (OVI) will cost you court costs
and fines; attorneys fees; loss of vehicle and
impound fees; reinstatement fees for drivers
license and vehicle registration plates; loss of
work time due to court appearances and possible jail time; as well as higher insurance rates.
These costs, however, do not compare with
the loss of a loved one killed in a traffic crash.
The costs to families all across Allen County

will be sorely felt this holiday season.

Over the past decade, 103 people died in
tragic crashes in Allen County. During 2013
alone, seven people died as a result of a traffic crash and so far in 2014, eight people have
died. This holiday season, families all across
Allen County will be mourning the loss of a
loved one to a traffic crash.
The underlying reasons for many of these
deaths include impaired driving, speed and
failure to use seat belts. Local law enforcement officials want to stop this unnecessary
loss of life.
Allen County Sheriff Sam Crish said, If we
catch you driving impaired, we will arrest you.
No exceptions. No excuses. We will be out in
force to get impaired drivers off the road. We
want everyone to play it safe. If you plan to go
out drinking - always designate a non-drinking
driver or find a different way home.

BRIEFS
AAA: 3.8M Ohioans
expected to travel
for holidays
COLUMBUS (AP) Auto
club AAA predicts a recordhigh number of Ohioans will
travel at least 50 miles from
home during a 13-day holiday period that begins before
Christmas and ends in the new
year.
It estimates more than 3.8
million Ohioans will make such
trips between Dec. 23 and Jan.
4, mostly by road. Air travel
also is forecast to increase a bit.
AAA says economic
improvements and relatively
low gas prices contribute to
the expectation of more travel. Timing is also a factor:
Christmas Day and New Years
Day fall on Thursdays this year,
making the holiday travel period a day longer than last year.

Farmers voice
concern over
flood-control plan
FINDLAY (AP) The
head of an agency overseeing a plan to reduce flooding along the Blanchard River
in northwestern Ohio says a
firsthand look at the area has
helped him understand the
problem.
Army Corps of Engineers
commander Lt. Col. Karl
Jansen of the Buffalo District
met recently with farmers in the
Findlay area to hear their concerns about the flooding plan.
The Army Corps is proposing to construct a ninemile channel that would divert
floodwater from a creek away
from Findlay and build a levee
to keep water from spilling
over into the city.
The Hancock County Farm
Bureau is against the idea
because it believes the project
will take up too much cropland and bring more flooding
to the fields.
Farm bureau leaders have
said that cleaning up the river
will help reduce the flooding,
but Army Corps has said that
will not make much of a difference, The Courier newspaper reported.

COLUMBUS (AP) A group formed

by Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine
will recommend changes to the way Ohio
trains officers after several fatal policeinvolved shootings that sparked protests in
the state and across the country.
DeWine wants the 16-member task force
to focus especially on training for use-offorce situations and for officers dealing
with racially diverse populations in their
communities. He also singled out determining whether Ohio officers are trained
well enough in recognizing when they are
dealing with an active shooter.
Are peace officer candidates getting
enough hands-on, in-the-field training?
Are students being tested for the right set
of skills? DeWine asked the group, the
Attorney General Advisory Group on Law
Enforcement Training, at its first meeting
Thursday.
Are the 66 police academies across
Ohio doing a good enough job training
officers? How do we know? he said. Is
there consistency in training among the
academies?
Two recent fatal police shootings in
Ohio started with reports of people with
guns: the death last month of a 12-yearold boy carrying a pellet gun in Cleveland
and a 22-year-old man carrying an air rifle
this summer in a suburban Dayton WalMart. Both cases involved white officers
shooting blacks.
The announcement of the panel came
two days before a man with Ohio connections fatally shot two New York City police
officers after vowing in online posts to kill
cops and invoking the police-involved
deaths of a New York man and an 18-year-

old from Ferguson, Missouri.

In his opening remarks, DeWine laid
out the basics of police training in Ohio. A
look at how its done:
Training is overseen by the Ohio
Peace Officer Training Commission, a
nine-member group appointed by the governor and consisting of a public representative, two sheriffs, two police chiefs, one
state criminal investigator, a state highway
patrol officer, an FBI agent and a state
Education Department official.
The commission determines topics
for police officer training in Ohio and sets
the minimum hours currently 605 of
basic training to become certified.
The commission and the attorney
general oversee the states police training
academies in London in central Ohio and
Richfield in northeastern Ohio, which provide advanced training for already certified
officers.
The commission certifies 66 police
training academies in Ohio that provide
basic training, ranging from community
colleges to major city police departments
such as Cincinnati, Columbus and
Cleveland and the state patrol.
The commission establishes minimum qualifications for academy instructors.
Group member Vincent Peterson is pastor of a church in Akron and a long-time
probation officer in Trumbull County,
perspectives he hopes will help him see
all sides.
It has nothing to do with race, it has
nothing to do with law enforcement as to
whats right, said Peterson, who is black.
Right stands by itself.

Pharmacies see shortage

in flu medication
COLUMBUS (AP) Ohio pharmacies are experiencing
shortages of an antiviral medication that helps reduce symptoms of the flu at a time when the illness is on the rise.
The Columbus Dispatch reports that nearly 1,000 people
have been hospitalized statewide as of Dec. 13.
Those who are trying to ease their symptoms at home with a
medication called Tamiflu might have trouble getting it at their
pharmacy right now. The newspaper reports that the head of
the Ohio Pharmacists Association says the demand for Tamiflu
appears to be overwhelming the supply at the moment.

Hobbit goes out on top

Wedding

NEW YORK (AP) While Hollywood continued to wrestle with the fallout of the Sony hacking scandal, the weekend
box office offered the solace of a moviegoing truism: Hobbits
sell.
Peter Jacksons final installment of his six J.R.R. Tolkien
adventures, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,
debuted with $56.2 million over the weekend and $90.6 million since opening Wednesday, according to studio estimates
Sunday. For an industry reeling from the cancellation of The
Interview and terrorist threats against moviegoers, Middleearth provided reliable refuge.

KALIDA Jeffersons
boys basketball team might
not have had much left in the
tank Saturday night at The
Wildcat Den of Kalida High
School.
After all, they were just
coming off an overtime loss
the night before to archrival Columbus Grove in
Northwest Conference action.
Perhaps it showed in the
shooting 27.1 percent
as the visiting Wildcats fell
50-39 to the host Wildcats in
non-league action.
We have nothing left;
were running on empty
and we have no answers. I
thought we had a good game
plan but Kalida does a great
job of forcing your role players to step up, Jefferson
coach Marc Smith explained.
Coach (Richard) Kortokrax
has the program he has

because the players execute

the game plans very well; I
give all the credit to them and
wish them luck.
Coach Kortokrax
acknowledged
Jeffersons weariness
and what his crew had
to do.
No doubt, having
an emotional game against
an archrival the night before
played into it. At the same
time, we knew that making others other than (Trey
Smith) and (Jace Stockwell)
beat us was a key to our success, he explained. On our
part, we made progress with
finding a rotation; we got
contributions off the bench
when we needed them. We
are far from a finished product, though.
Jefferson (4-2) was 13-of48 from the field including 1-of-9 behind the arc.

Lady Wildcats, that was as close as they
could get. New Bremen answered with a

the horn for a 31-25 edge entering the
finale.

healthy senior, Devin
Kortokrax, netted 17

Jeffersons man-to-man.
Kalida (4-1) canned a
healthy 44.2 percent (19-of-43,
including 3-of-13 downtown).
Both teams started off
slowly from the field with the
Jeffcats putting Drew Reiss
(alternating with Josh Teman
- 3 steals - throughout the
game) on Kortokrax and the
Wildcats using their triangle,
combining on 6-of-22 shooting (3-of-9 for Delphos). The
guests led 7-2 on a basket by
Smith with over five minutes showing but they went
on a drought the rest of the
canto, missing their last six
shots and adding two miscues

(6 for the game). Meantime,

Kalida eventually tied it at
7-7 on a mid-range jumper by
Kortokrax at 2:01.
Brady Laudick came
off the bench and buried a
3-ball 30 ticks into the second stanza, giving the hosts
the lead for good. Delphos
finally broke its drought on
a Dalton Hicks baseliner
at 6:12. Kalida maintained
a lead between three and
eight the rest of the half,
with Stockwell canning two
singles at 50.9 ticks to get
Jefferson within 19-15.
Jefferson hung around in
the third period but could
never get below a deficit
of four. Slowly but surely,
Kalida began to add to its
lead hitting 8-of-14 from
the field with Kortokrax
getting loose for seven points.
Their lead stood at 37-28 on a
drive by Grant Unverferth (4
assists) at 7.1 ticks.

FORT JENNINGS For the past

2 1/2 seasons, Kalida girls basketball

Saturday afternoon, the 5-10 junior

missed just one shot on the day in leading the LadyCats to a 65-32 Putnam

The win improved Kalida to 1-0
in the PCL and 4-2 overall, while the

measure.
Ive been on Kylie for 2 1/2 years
now to shoot the ball more, Huber said.
She is so passive and its a good trait
to have, I guess, to be unselfish, but
at some point you have to realize youve made every shot you
have taken you have to shoot the
ball a little more. We have other
people that are capable of scoring
as Jackie (Gardner) is capable of
driving by anyone and Nicole (Recker)
is capable of penetrating and kicking
(the ball) out, so you have to be able to
step out and seek those shots you can get
when that is happening.
Osterhage scored the first five points
of the game as she dropped in a short
jumper, then stepped back and hit a
3-pointer. After Alyssa Louth scored for
the Musketeers, Osterhage hit another
three giving Kalida an 8-2 lead. Erin
Osting hit a basket for the Musketeers
before Joni Kaufman ended Osterhages
run of points for Kalida hitting a three
of her own before Osterhage was fouled
and hit the second of two free throws for
a 12-4 Kalida lead.

Ft. Jennings scored four straight points

as Hannah Clay grabbed a miss and scored
and Keri Eickholt hit two free throws.
Katelyn Siebeneck had the LadyCats
up 15-8 before Hannah Clay grabbed
another offensive rebound for the
Musketeers and scored making it
15-10 after eight minutes.
After a close first quarter, the
LadyCats broke the game open in
the second quarter outscoring the
Musketeers 21-5. Osterhage scored the
first nine points, which included a three,
of the second quarter that gave Kalida
a 24-10 lead before Gabby Clippinger
ended the run with a free throw with
3:32 left in the half.
Kalida then went on a quick 9-0 run as
Cathy Basinger had four points, Osterhage
two and Siebeneck hit her second three of
the game. The Musketeers didnt hit a field
goal until there was less than a minute left
in the quarter as Kylie Jettinghoff scored.
After a 3-pointer by Gardner, Clippinger
scored again for the Musketeers making
the halftime score 36-15.

Raiders take down Lincolnview
By Kevin Wannemacher
DHI Media Business Manager
kwannemacher@timesbulletin.com
HAVILAND Wayne Trace put all five starters in
double figures and the Raiders used a pair of critical

runs to pull away from Lincolnview for a 75-58 victory

on Saturday night at the Palace.
Ethan Linder led the way for the Raiders with 20
points and six rebounds while David Sinn added 14
points and seven boards. Corbin Linder, Luke Miller
and Cole Shepherd chipped in 13, 12 and 10 points,
respectively.
We had good balance tonight, commented Raider
head coach Jim Linder. Everybody contributed and
we did a good job of seeing the floor and finding the
open guy.
The Raiders opened the game with 10 straight
points, getting a 3-pointer by Miller along with two
Corbin Linder baskets and a bucket from Ethan Linder.
However, the Lancers answered with a 10-2 run of
their own to trim the deficit to 12-10. Hayden Ludwig
and Justis Dowdy each hit 3-pointers for Lincolnview
with Chandler Adams and Dowdy adding two free
throws each.
We didnt do a good job of coming out and attacking, noted Lancer head coach Brett Hammons. We
wanted to keep them from being able to set up their
press but we didnt do a good job of being aggressive
and taking the ball at them.
Wayne Trace got a pair of baskets late in the first
quarter from Cole Shepherd to post a 16-12 advantage
after eight minutes of action.
Lincolnview (2-3) rallied to tie the contest early
in the second quarter, using a bucket from Adams

to knot the game at 22-22 with 4:12 remaining in the

half. The Raiders, though, responded with a 15-5
run to close out the half and post a 37-27 lead at the
intermission.
We worked our way back and then they came
right back with that big run there in the second quarter,
Hammons continued. We had a stretch where we didnt
make good decisions and they took advantage of it.
When you are playing good teams, those are the things
we have to clean up.
Wayne Trace (5-0) again widened the margin in the
third quarter.
Leading 43-36, two buckets each by Sinn and
Miller and a pair of Ethan Linder free throws pushed the
advantage to 53-36.
I thought our defense was pretty good especially
in the second half, noted the Raider head coach. We
gave up some 3-pointers in the first half but we did a
better job of finding their shooters in the second half. We
were able to take advantage of some turnovers and turn
them into points, too.
The Lancers closed within 62-53 on a Dowdy
3-pointer at the 3:09 mark but Wayne Trace sealed the
victory at the free throw line.
Wayne Trace hit 13 of 17 free throws in the fourth
quarter, getting 8 of 10 by Ethan Linder and a pair each
from Justin Speice and Corbin Linder.
Lincolnview finished the night with 17 turnovers
compared to Wayne Traces 11.

Blue Jays spoil Wills homecoming

By LARRY HEIING
DHI Media Correspondent
news@delphosherald.com
DELPHOS The St. Johns Blue Jays defensive pressure
spoiled the homecoming of 1996 alum and current Fremont
St. Joseph coach Jonathan Will Saturday night at the Vatican
with a 69-34 drubbing.
I wanted my kids to experience the atmosphere of Delphos
St. Johns and the tremendous support of the Delphos community, Will explained. The Jays are a fun team to watch this
year with their chemistry and will have a incredible season.
Its great to come home but we knew coming in that with the
defense of the Blue Jays wed struggle to score.
It was the Jays offense that sparkled to open the game as
Tyler Conley landed a bank shot and struck again after an
offensive rebound with a putback. Andy Grothouse missed
a 3-point attempt from the top but got his own rebound and
drove the lane for the layup. Alex Odenweller popped a triple
and Coach Will called timeout down 9-0. Grothouse continued
the Jays opening run with a hoop-and-foul. Fremont finally
got on the board with a triple by Lucas Michael but Grothouse
answered with another bucket while being fouled on the drive.
A rarity occurred next: back-to-back 5-second calls. Evan
Hays kept the St. Johns offense in high gear with an assist to
Timmy Kreeger for the bucket and a steal resulting in a coastto-coast layin as the Jays led 24-11 at the break.
Rebounding by the Jays sparked the offense to open the second stanza as Grothouse put back another offensive rebound
of his miss. Austin Heiing pushed the ball ahead to Hays after
a rebound for the fast break and scored again with a 6-footer
in the paint. Sophomore Robby Saine landed a triple from the
corner, Kreeger assisted Grothouse for a basket and coast-tocoast buckets after steals by Grothouse and Odenweller sent
all the Jays starters to the bench. Kreeger rounded out the
first-half scoring with an offensive rebound and bucket and a
pair of free throws as the Jays led 44-16 at the half.
After Grothouse scored on the inbounds play to open the
third quarter, the Crimson Streaks scored the next four points
with a bank shot by Parker Stierwalt and free throws by Kyle
Veleba. Hays fueled the offense, finding a cutting Conley for
the hoop. The Jays lead reached 30 as Conley scored on the
inbound lob.
St. Johns outscored Fremont 12-6 in the third quarter as
head coach Aaron Elwer emptied his bench.
Free throws highlighted the fourth quarter as the two teams
combined for 20: the Jays converted 6-of-12 and Fremont
6-of-8. In between trips to the foul line, Saine drilled his second triple of the night, Buddy Jackson found Owen Baldauf
for the layin and Tyler Ledyard hit a bank shot for the impressive win.
We wanted to set the tone tonight with a good start and
we did just that with a 12-0 lead, Elwer said. We struggled
in our first three games; when we got the lead, we couldnt
put the game away. We did a good job tonight of extending
the lead and our bench got some valuable on-the-floor experience.
St. Johns had two players in double digits as Grothouse
netted 21 points and Conley chipped in 10. They shot well
from the floor, netting 52 percent of their shots, along with
11-of-19 from the free throw line (57.7%).
Fremont struggled against the aggressive man-to-man
defense of the Jays, shooting only 32 percent from the floor.
The Crimson Streaks converted 10-of-18 shots (55.6%) from
the line.
The Blue Jays also dominated the glass, grabbing 30
rebounds compared to 18 for Fremont.
St. Johns improves to 4-0 on the season and will travel up

Wednesday night that saw Buettner
defeat Jack Huffman of LCC 8-4.
On Saturday, it took overtime before
Buettner notched two back points to
defeat Huffman 3-1 in the match featuring a pair of state qualifiers from last
season.
It was also Buettners second Allen
County championship, having won the
title at 152 during his sophomore season. Spencervilles Caleb Sutherland
finished fourth.
Foust won the title in the 182-pound
bracket with pins of Logan Emerick
(Allen East) in 5:15, Tyler Shobe (Bath)
5:54 and Dylan Pletcher (Bluffton) in
3:00 during his domination of the round
robin. Foust improves to 12-1 and is the
second title of the season after winning
at Lincolnview last weekend.
All of our wrestlers worked hard
all week and performed well today,
said Jefferson front man Mike Wilson.
That dedication at practice paid off as
we got a lot better in just a week since
Lincolnview.
St. Johns senior Alex Haunhorst
defended his 2013 title with a 10-1
major decision over Baths Trey Terry at
170 pounds.

Osterhage with 10 points and
six rebounds.
Keri Eickholt led the
Musketeers with six points
and Louth had five points.
Jettinghoff grabbed six
rebounds for the Musketeers.
Fort Jennings won the
junior varsity contest 24-18.
The Musketeers are back
in action today as they host
Crestview, while Kalida is
back in action Tuesday at
home with Columbus Grove.

After giving up 10 points

the opening quarter to the
Musketeers, the Ladycats
allowed just 22 points the
rest of the game as they held
the Musketeers to a 12-of-53
shooting day, 0-of-15 from
three-point range, and they
forced 18 turnovers.
Our defense played well
at times. You look at the score
and say we won by 30 points
but as coaches we are seeing
the little things we didnt do
at times, Huber said. We
did get a lot of deflections out
there today; credit Jackie and
Joni out there. Jackie runs
around out there getting her
hands on a lot of balls and
disrupting their offense more
than anything. We talk about
active hands all the time and
you might not turn them over
but if they are trying to run
a certain set you can disrupt their timing. We definitely want to be a little more
aggressive on defense.
Kalida continued to pull
away in the third quarter with
an 18-9 scoring edge, then
closed the game with an 11-8
run in the fourth quarter as
they were able to substitute

This has been the story
of our season all along,
Fort Jennings coach Rhonda

DEAR ABBY: I am a soldier in

Afghanistan who is single with few friends,
if you would even call them that. We work
24/7. No days off, no breaks. Its not an easy
life. You would not believe how nice it is to
receive a message from family or friends.
Dont get me wrong, I have a loving family
who support me and everything I do. When I
first got here, Id get a message from them at
least once a week. But now that I am seven
months into a 12-month deployment, it has
been almost two months since I have gotten
anything.
Now, I know if I reach out and send a
message -- which I have done -- Ill get
replies, but am I wrong for not wanting to
have to do that? Is it wrong to wish that I could
come in, relax, and find a message waiting for
me? I know they love me and are busy with
their lives, but sometimes it seems that I am
forgotten. It would be comforting to know
someone is thinking about me. Any day now
could be my last. -- DEPLOYED SOLDIER
DEAR
DEPLOYED
SOLDIER:
Because youre feeling lonely and forgotten,
its important to let your family and friends
back home know how you feel. They are not
mind readers. You say you heard from them
in the early months of your deployment. But
have you reached out to them recently? If you
havent, they may assume you are being kept
so busy that you are unable to stay in touch
with them. The surest way to get what you
need is to communicate -- and that applies to
more situations in life than this one.
DEAR ABBY: I am a senior in high school
in Texas. Everyone has decided which college
they want to go to and what they want to be.
I have no clue. It is frustrating, because when
adults ask what my plans for the future are
and I say I dont know, they look at me like
Im stupid.
I feel 18 years isnt long enough to figure

all that out. I am an introvert, and I would

really like to open up a cute little cafe in New
York when I am older. But every time I tell
someone this is what Id like to do, they ask
how Im going to make money at it. Theyre
right -- I cant make a living off a coffee shop,
especially with the high cost of living in New
York.
Im lost and dont know what to do. I have
less than a year to figure things out, and its
starting to stress me. Please give me some
advice. I need a friend. -- LOST IN TEXAS
DEAR LOST: You not only need a
friend, you also need a counselor to help
you find direction. If there isnt one at
your school, consider discussing this with
a career counselor at a nearby university or
community college. Some courses in business
administration would be valuable for you so
you can learn the nuts and bolts about running
a business and avoid common mistakes that
might cause yours to fail.
Some classes in commercial cooking
would also be helpful. If there isnt a trade
school nearby that offers them, consider
working for a year or two in the restaurant
industry to see how it functions. Many of the
best chefs in the world started out that way,
and you will learn quickly if this is something
you really want to pursue.
P.S. Being an introvert doesnt have to
stop you, if you partner with someone whos
a people person to work the front of the shop
and teach you the art of schmoozing.

that
the

fibromyalgia
are
explained by these
psychological
conditions. I think
the
evidence
increasingly indicates
that fibromyalgia is
an illness with real
underlying physical
causes.
A
characteristic
feature of fibromyalgia
is pain and stiffness
that occur in specific
spots along the body,
called tender points.
The area between the
shoulder blades and
the bottom of the neck
tends to be the most
painful. In people
with
fibromyalgia,
only certain spots
are tender; pushing
on other parts of the
body does not cause
pain. (Ive put an
illustration of tender
points
along
the
body on my website,
AskDoctorK.com.)
When we feel pain
-- any type of pain -it is because certain
nerve endings are
stimulated.
Those
nerves send chemical
signals to a part of
the brain where pain
is felt. Doctors
and scientists are
beginning to unravel
the chemistry of
pain. People with
fibromyalgia
have

levels

pain-sensing
chemicals in the brain

To manage the
pain, doctors often
recommend over-thecounter pain relievers.
Examples
include
acetaminophen
(Tylenol), ibuprofen
(Motrin,
Advil)
and
naproxen
(Aleve). A doctor
may also prescribe
a muscle relaxant
or
antidepressant
to
relieve
pain.
Doctors also often
treat the condition
with these drugs:
cyclobenzaprine,
amitriptyline
and
gabapentin.
In recent years, the
FDA has approved
three drugs to treat
fibromyalgia. One is
pregabalin (Lyrica), an
anticonvulsant drug.
The other two are
antidepressant drugs,
duloxetine (Cymbalta)
and
milnacipran
(Savella).
But medications are
often ineffective. Nondrug treatments are
more likely to help.
Heat and massage, for
example, can provide
short-term pain relief.

Born on

Jackson was named

The mouse living
in a church has few
resources for food
and warmth -- unlike
the mouse living in
a farmhouse, where
people unknowingly

course, the mouse.

Doby did not play

Hobbit

Bench

Aided by popularity on Imax screens, The Battle of the Five

Armies dominated the pre-Christmas frame with a five-day
haul similar to the franchises previous entry, The Desolation
of Smaug, even if its actual debut weekend was notably less
than both prior Hobbit movies. In its second week of release
overseas, Warner Bros. Five Armies added $105.5 million to
bring its two-week global total past $350 million.
Jeff Goldstein, head of domestic distribution for Warner
Bros., said the healthy weekend of moviegoing was a welcome
respite after an upsetting and so disturbing week.
Not only did we do business in places that I would expect,
like the West Coast, we did business everywhere in the country, Goldstein said. We didnt see that on the prior two
Hobbits.
Another final installment in a trilogy, Night at the Museum:
Secret of the Tomb, opened in a distant second place. The Fox
comedy, which features Robin Williams final performance,
took in $17.3 million, well off the pace of previous franchise
entries. The franchises previous debut was $54.2 million for
2009s Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.
Sony Pictures, which on Wednesday shelved the Dec. 25
release of the North Korea satire The Interview following
hacker threats of violence against theaters showing the film,
unveiled its other holiday option. The studios Annie remake,
starring Quvenzhane Wallis as the titular orphan, opened with
$16.3 million.
It was nice shot in the arm, said Rory Bruer, head of
distribution for Sony, who declined to discuss issues related to
The Interview. Were focused on Annie, he said.
Last weeks top film, Ridley Scotts Moses epic, Exodus:
Gods and Kings, tumbled to fourth place with $8.1 million in
its second week. The Fox release slid a dramatic 67 percent.
Heading into one of Hollywoods most lucrative weekends
of the year, the Christmas box office will be without its top
comedy option in The Interview, directed by Seth Rogen and
Evan Goldberg. The film had been expected to take in about
$25-30 million.
With one major release now out of the mix, that will leave
more room for the Disney musical Into the Woods, Angelina
Jolies World War II tale Unbroken and The Hobbit.
Theres a huge opportunity there, said Paul Dergarabedian,
senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. Theres
enough product out there to give it a very satisfying, Christmas
holiday leading into the new year. Yeah, we are down one film,
but its a nice mix of films out there.
On Sunday, David Boies, a lawyer for Sony, said on NBCs
Meet the Press that The Interview will be released. The
studio has been criticized by many, including President Barack
Obama, for dropping the film following data leaks and intimidations from hackers the FBI has said came from North Korea.
How its going to be distributed, I dont think anybody
knows quite yet, Boies said.

Since Burchfield has been working in the county prosecutors office, he will not be able to fully assume the case load in
Common Pleas Court directly after taking office. Those cases
that came through the prosecutors office while Burchfield
worked there will require another judge to hear. According
to Current Judge Charles D. Steele, Since Judge Burchfield
comes from the prosecutors office it will be necessary to have
other judges take care of all cases pending in the prosecutors
office until Judge Burchfield takes office. It could take several
months for all those cases to go through court. Even after that
there could be cases coming back like motions for judicial
release and probation violations from cases that occurred when
Judge Burchfield was in the prosecutors office.
Steele confirmed that he has been appointed as a visiting
retired judge by the Ohio Supreme Court, so he and Judge
Kevin Taylor will be handling cases until Burchfield takes
over. Once Burchfield takes the bench, he will be handling the
newly filed cases.
The situation is not unique for a newly appointed judge. I
had the same situation and used visiting judges when I first
took office, Steele stated.

Killer of 2 NYC
officers had long
criminal history

NEW YORK (AP) The

gunman who fatally ambushed
two police officers in their
squad car had a long criminal
record, a hatred for police and
the government and an apparent history of mental instability
that included an attempt to hang
himself a year ago, authorities
said Sunday.
Moments before opening fire, Ismaaiyl Brinsley
approached people on the street
and asked them to follow him
on Instagram, then told them,
Watch what Im going to do,
Chief of Detectives Robert
Boyce said.
A portrait of the Brooklynborn gunman emerged as bigcity police departments and
union leaders around the country warned officers to change up
their routines and insist on extra
backup a day after Brinsley
carried out what he portrayed
online as retaliation for the slayings of black men at the hands
of white police.
Brinsley was black; the
slain officers were Asian and
Hispanic.
Investigators were trying to
determine if Brinsley had taken
part in any protests over the
deaths of Michael Brown and

Eric Garner, whose names he

invoked in his online threat, or
simply latched on to the cause
for the final act in a violent
rampage.
They said he traveled frequently between the South and
New York, where he fathered a
child in Brooklyn, and had been
in the city earlier in the week.
Brinsley, 28, had at least 19
arrests in Georgia and Ohio,
spent two years in prison for
gun possession and had a troubled childhood so violent that
his mother was afraid of him,
police said. He ranted online
about police and the government
and expressed self-despair and
anger at himself and where his
life was, Boyce said.
Boyce said Brinsleys mother believed he had undiagnosed
mental problems and may have
been on medication at some
point, but detectives were still
trying to determine if he had a
mental illness.
On Saturday afternoon,
Brinsley approached a squad
car from behind in Brooklyns
Bedford-Stuyvesant section and
fired four shots, killing Officers
Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu.
He then ran into a subway station and committed suicide.
