MILLION ON FPSO UPGRADING

ith the FPSO sector growing at a phenomenal
rate, Bumi Armada and SBM Offshore are
shelling out close to $170 million to upgrade its
current FPSOs. Keppel Shipyard has secured the Floating
Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) upgrading
projects SBM Offshore and Bumi Armada.

The first project is from SBM Offshore to refurbish and

upgrade an existing FPSO vessel, FPSO Xikomba. Work
on this FPSO unit is expected to be completed by the third
quarter of 2013.
Xikomba will be leased by Eni Angola S.p.A for 12 years
for the development of Block 15/06, offshore Angola.
FPSO Xikomba is jointly owned by SBM Offshore and
Sonangol, Angolas national oil and gas company.
Long-term business partnerships are key to our
performance, our ability to deliver and our ambition in
furthering our lead in the FPSO market. The award of the
FPSO Xikomba is another milestone in this deep longterm relationship, said Bruno Chabas, Chief Executive
Officer of SBM Offshore.
Keppel Shipyards scope of work on FPSO Xikomba
comprises life extension, refurbishment and upgrading
Continued from page 1

of existing topside modules and turret mooring system

as well as the installation and integration of new topside
modules. The FPSO vessel will subsequently proceed to
Angola for completion.
For Bumi Armada, Keppel Shipyard will modify and
upgrade FPSO Armada Claire. This includes refurbishment
and life extension works as well as installation and
integration of topside modules. Work is expected to be
completed by the fourth quarter of 2013.
Upon completion, FPSO Armada Claire will be deployed in
the Balnaves Field, north-west Australia.
With the trust and collaboration of committed
and capable business partners, we have grown and
enhanced our fleet of quality FPSO vessels. The Armada
Claire project is our tenth major collaboration with
Keppel Shipyard, and we are confident that it will be
professionally executed. said Hassan Basma, Executive
Director and Chief Executive Officer of Bumi Armada.

FPSO IN ASIA
PACIFIC: THE NEW
ENERGY FRONTIER

THE BRAZILIAN
SAMBA HAS ITS
IMPACT!!

At the end of 2011, there were 139 active

FPSOs across the globe with 94 companies
holding equity stakes in them. In terms of
total FPSO-based crude oil and natural gas
production capacity, Petrobras, ExxonMobil
Corporation and Total S.A. are the
dominant companies in the global market.
These companies together contribute about
29.2% of the global FPSO-based oil and
gas production capacity.
The Brazilian national oil company
Petrobras is the largest market player
globally, in terms of FPSO-based oil and
gas production capacity, with 703.59
MMboe of the production capacity. The
total equity-weighted FPSO-based crude
oil and natural gas production capacity of
Petroleo Brasileiro S.A. accounts for about
13.5% of the total production capacity of
FPSOs globally.
For 2012 to 2015, Brazil has planned the
largest FPSO-based crude oil and natural
gas production capacity expansion among
all the countries.
Therefore, based on current statistics,
Brazil, which currently has the largest
FPSO-based crude oil and natural gas
production capacity, is expected to continue
to be the market leader in the FPSO
industry in 2015.

In 2001 there were just 120 floating

production units operating worldwide.
A decade later this figure has increased
to 250 units, according to research by
International Maritime Associates (IMA),
and more are set to come online in the
coming years.
South-east Asia alone currently
accounts for 33 of the projects in
the pipeline, while Brazils vast ultradeepwater reserves account for 47,
providing many opportunities for
this technology - already suited to
deepwater exploration - to advance even
further.
Jim McCaul, head of IMA, described
the opportunities for future growth
within the sector as hugely positive,
explaining: Global demand for oil
continues to grow, the market is again
threatened by MENA supply disruptions,
oil prices have pierced $100 and
virtually every major field operator has
announced plans to increase offshore
E&D expenditures.
Current FPSO Projects
Evidence from Asia would certainly
seem to back up McCauls point that
investment in FPSO is taking place on an
increasingly significant scale.

Bumi Armada completed its third FPSO,

Berhad, earlier this year and it was
promptly sent on assignment in Vietnam.
The 22-month project converted a
SuezMax tanker into a 55,000 bbls per
day FPSO, which has now been put into
action on the Te Giac Trang field, located
around 100km off the coast of Vietnam.
Hassan Basma, executive director and
chief executive officer of Bumi Armada,
said: This FPSO has been specifically
designed to process difficult crude with
a low wax appearance temperature and
to withstand, sustain and remain moored
under 100 year return environmental
conditions including cyclones and
tsunamis prevalent offshore Vietnam;
this too in shallow waters of less than
43 metres.
Ezra has also recently sent an FPSO
to offshore Vietnam to operate on
the Chim Sao oil field, around 350km
offshore.

SITE VISIT TO SBM OFFSHORES

FPSOS IN KEPPEL
SHIPYARD, SINGAPORE

Even though listening to expert opinions in a conference is definitely rewarding,

nothing beats the experience of being onboard an FPSO itself. For the first
time in thirteen years, the FPSO Congress is proud to elevate you to a whole
new level of conferencing experience.
Registered attendees will be visiting SBMs FPSOs currently getting converted
in Singapore. The attendees will be taken onboard the FPSOs to get a realistic
feel of practical challenges encountered during vessel conversions. The visit will
be facilitated by an SBM representative on the conversion methodologies being
implemented. Come onboard a platform created to share best practices and to
initiate new ideas amidst key industry stakeholders; not in a conference room,
but on the vessel itself!!

THE A Z OF A TURRET
MOORED FPSO
Rationale:
As field and subsea infrastructure continue to get complex, choice of the right type of
mooring and riser system is very critical. It is no secret that a variety of factors have
to be considered before narrowing down on the right solution. The main purpose of
the proposed workshop is to give to the attendees a good understanding of the basis
necessary for the selection of the station keeping facility for the FPSO. Every available
option will be described; their pros and cons will be discussed. Examples on state of art
turret systems will also be presented.
Discussion Points:
} Examining the Turret vs Spread mooring systems and the impact of field
specifications on the choice of the same
} External vs Internal Turret Which one is better and when?
} Permanent vs Disconnect able turret moored FPSOs How reliable is the disconnect
and reconnect sequence?
} What are the associated optimised riser solutions available?
} Addressing the impact of subsea infrastructure interface on the choice of mooring
system
} Listing the recent technological upgrades available in the industry for turret moored
FPSOs
} Developing an operation and maintenance framework to ensure hassle free
productivity

DEVELOPING A HOLISTIC
CORROSION MANAGEMENT
FRAMEWORK FOR THE FPSO
Rationale:
Corrosion control design and management for a Floating Production Storage and
Offloading installations (FPSO) is a challenging endeavour. FPSOs generally operate
in quite corrosive conditions. There are significantly increased challenges to design and
operate FPSOs in these corrosive conditions. Environmental factors such as relatively
high ambient temperatures, humidity and cargo temperatures are bound to have a
huge influence on the corrosion vulnerability of the vessel. Therefore selecting a cost
effective corrosion control design that addresses both the fabrication and operational
aspects is tricky. This workshop will analyse the various forms of corrosion that could
impact the FPSO and focus on specific strategies to mitigate the same.
Discussion Points:
} How to select a cost effective corrosion protection system based on a combination of
corrosion margins, coating systems and cathodic protection
} Devising an operation inspection, maintenance and repair strategies for the selected
corrosion protection system
} How should the approach for choice of a corrosion mitigation system vary between
newbuild FPSOs vs. existing vessels (conversions)
