2. Flexible coupling : Bushed pin coupling, Universal coupling, Oldham coupling
2. List the types of keys and its purpose.
Key is used to prevent the relative motion between the shafts. Types: Flat, Saddle, Tangent
3. Compare Protected type and Unprotected type coupling.
a) Unprotected type flange coupling:- In an unprotected type flange coupling each shaft is keyed to
the boss of a flange with a counter sunk key, and the flange are coupled together by means of
bolts. Generally, three, four or six bolts are used.
b) Protected type flange coupling:- In a protected type flange coupling the protruding bolts and
nuts are protected by flanges on the two halves of the coupling, in order to avoid danger to the
workman.
4. What is meant by coincident plane?- A plane is a flat, two-dimensional surface. A plane is the
two-dimensional analogue of a point (zero dimensions), a line (one dimension) and threedimensional space
5. What is meant by derived curve?- The graph of the derivative of a function of one variable
whose graph is the given curve.
PLUMMER BLOCK

2. List the materilas used as bearing materails.
Ceramics, Chrome Steels, Stainless Steels, and Plastics
3. Calssify the bearings. - Roller bearings, Sliding contact bearings
4. Lsit the advantages of plummer block comparing with other bearings.
Longer service life, higher operational reliability, quicker mounting, minimal maintenance,
simplified replacement
5. List the parts of plummer block. - plummer block consists of a cast iron Block Base, gunmetal
bearing bottom & top halves, a cast iron cap and two mild steel bolts.
SCREW JACK
1. Mention the name of thread used in screw jack. - Screw thread
2. Expalin the use of screw jack. - It is commonly used to lift heavy weights, such as the
foundations of houses, or large vehicles.
3. Expalin the function of tommy bar in screw jack.
A short bar put through the shaft of a socket spanner or box spanner to provide extra leverage.
4. List out the parts of screw jack. - Tommy bar, screw, nut, washer, body, cup,
5. Explain the mechanisim available in screw jack
Screw jack is used in applications where linear motion is required. Lifting of any load, pushing
or pulling of mechanical equipment, adjusting of tight clearances of mechanical parts can be
done by screw jacks. Mechanical capacity of screw jacks is between 5kN and 2000kN. Jack
screws can be used as linear motors, linear actuators, or mechanical lifts depending on type of
motion.
LATHE TAIL STOCK
1. Discuss the function of lathe tail stock .
It used in conjunction with a rotary table on a milling machine.
2. List the materils used in lathe tail stock parts. - Mild steel, Cast iron
3. List the operations performed in lathe tail stock
Turning and Related Operations, Drilling and Related Operations, Milling, Machining & Turning
Centers
4. Drilling can be performed using tail stock. Dicuss.
The tailstock of a lathe can be used for drilling, with the aid of a drill chuck attachment. The drill
chuck has a more taper shaft which can be push into the shaft of the tailstock, locking it in
position.
5. List out the different styles of center points used in a lathe tailstock.
Live center and a dead center being the two most commonly used. A live center point consists of
a steel body containing a bearing-equipped center point that allows the point to spin with the
rotating stock. This avoids any burning of the stock and makes for a more stable spin of the
workpiece. The dead center point is a steel point that is locked solidly into the lathe tailstock and
does not turn.
UNIVERSAL COUPLING
1. Define. Shaft coupling. - Coupling is used to connect the two or more shafts.
2. Define. Universal coupling.
Coupling that allows parts of a machine not in line with each other limited freedom of movement
in any direction while transmitting rotary motion
3. List the applications of universal couplings.
Aircraft, appliances, control mechanisms, electronics, Instrumentation, medical and optical
devices, ordnance, radio, sewing machines, textile machinery and tool drives.
4. Lsit the advantages of universal coupling comparing with other shaft couplings.
1. Protects driven component by serving as a mechanical "fuse" - an inexpensive replaceable
plastic midsection shears under excess load
2. Protects support bearings by exerting consistently low reactive forces, even under large
misalignments 3. Zero backlash and moderate torsional stiffness
5. List the Rigid couplings unsed to coonect the shafts. - Muff coupling, Clamp coupling, Flange
coupling
MACHINE VICE
1. Discuss the applications of Machine vice . - Drilling, milling, planning
2. Machine vice body is made up of cast Iron. Discuss. - For heavy duty machining process
3. Discuss about swivelling type machine vice.
The swivel vice is used to mill an angular surface in relation to a straight surface without moving
the work piece from the vice. In construction it may be considered as plain vice which is
mounted on a particular base graduated in degrees. The base is clamped on the table with the
help of T.bolts.
4. List the materials used in Machine vice for various parts.- CAST IRON, MILD STEEL
5. List the other kinds of vise.
Hand vises, Machine vises, Cross Vises, Off-center vises, Angle vises, Sine vises,
STUFFING BOX
1. Discuss the function of Stuffing box.
A stuffing box is an assembly which is used to house a gland seal. It is used to prevent leakage of
11fluid, such as water or steam, between sliding or turning parts of machine elements.
2. List the types of stuffing box. - Horizontal and vertical.
3. Discuss the function of gland in stuffing box.
A gland is a general type of stuffing box, used to seal a rotating or reciprocating shaft against a
fluid. The most common example is in the head of a tap (faucet) where the gland is usually
packed with string which has been soaked in tallow or similar grease
4. List the parts of the stuffing box.
Gland, stud, bush, body, nut
5. List out the applications of stuffing box.
Boats, steam engines
CROSS HEAD
1. Discuss the function of Cross head.
A crosshead is a mechanism used in large reciprocating engines and reciprocating compressors[2]
to eliminate sideways pressure on the piston.
2. List the materials used in Crosshead.
Cast iron for body, mild steel for rod end and cover plate.
3. List out the applications of Crosshaed.
Internal combustion engine, Steam engines, Marine engines
4. Discuss the function of crosshead in 2 stroke engine.
The crosshead pin connects the piston rod to the connecting rod. On either side of the crosshead
pin are mounted the crosshead slippers. The slippers run up and down in the crosshead guides as
the piston and rod are reciprocating and prevent the top of the connecting rod from moving
sideways.
5. Discus the function of Crosshead Lubrication in Marine Diesel Engines.
The crosshead on a slow speed 2 stroke is a difficult bearing to lubricate effectively. The load is
continually downward and because the con rod swings about the pin, changing direction each
stroke, true hydrodynamic lubrication cannot take place. Instead the lubrication starts as
boundary, and as the rubbing speed increases, a hydrodynamic film is built up. As the rubbing
speed decreases the lubrication becomes boundary once again.
SAFETY VALVE
1. Discuss the applications of safety valves.
Oil and gas industry, petrochemical industry, energy industry, heating and air conditioning
industry
2. Explain the working principle of lever safety valve.
A safety valve is a valve mechanism which automatically releases a substance from a boiler,
pressure vessel, or other system, when the pressure or temperature exceeds preset limits.
