Vineland Public Schools students prepare to decorate a tree at

the upper level of the Landis MarketPlace, one of 21 businesses
to be spruced up by district students on December 5.

ore than 400 students from all Vineland

Public Schools and area youth organizations worked together to brighten downtown businesses for the holiday season, according to
John Procopio, coordinator of the project. The
event, now in its sixth year, is intended to establish
and build strong relationships between the schools,
students, businesses and community as a whole,
according to Procopio.
The students descended on the downtown district on Friday December 5, working on decorations
to beautify Christmas trees and present them in an
array of 21 business storefront windows. A contest
was also part of the project, and each school's tree
will be judged based on several criteria. Prizes will
be awarded to the winners.
We would like to thank Vineland Economic
Development and Wal-Mart for helping us in coordinating the donation of 25 pre-lit Christmas Trees,
said John Procopio. We greatly appreciate the support of the Vineland Board of Education for providing transportation to insure the success of this
project.
We are also very grateful for the assistance of
the Vineland Downtown Improvement District
(VDID) as well as all the participating businesses for
helping make this event a continuing success," said
Procopio.
Following their work in the downtown businesses, the students were treated to pizza and soft
drinks at the New Police Athletic League Building,

n the spring of 2012, the Cumberland Homeless

Shelter embarked on a major project of rehabilitating their 40-year-old building #2. The shelter houses individuals who are homeless and helps
them as they search for permanent housing.
Over the past 20 months, a team of volunteers
worked weekends, demolishing the interior of the
building where they found mold and termites. Once
cleared they installed new drywall, ceiling tiles, windows, insulation, floor tiles, and doors. All new electrical and plumbing lines were also installed. The
interior and exterior received a new coat of paint.
Construction was finally completed and the
new building was dedicated on December 15 and
is now ready for clients.
The shelter capacity is now doubled to 112 beds

We said a prayer for you today

And know God must have heard
We felt the answer in our hearts
Although he spoke not a word
We didnt ask for wealth or fame
I know you wouldnt mind
We asked for priceless treasures rare
Of a more lasting kind
We prayed that hed be near you
Now that youve gone away
To grant you holiday blessings
And His light to show your way
We asked for happiness for you
In all things great and small
But that youd know His loving care
We prayed for most of all
Merry Christmas, Mom and Dad
Missed more than words can say

The Eagles Nest: Once Upon

a Time in Sicily
In a story full of
adventures, romance,
and intrigue, Vineland
resident Carmelo Ciro
vividly evokes his
childhood in Partanna,
a small and remote
Sicilian mountain town
overlooking Greek temples and the Mediterranean Sea. It is the
late 1950s, a time when Sicily was a rigid,
closed, and male-dominated society. In an
ancient setting of great natural beauty,
inhabited by unforgettable people and
ruled by myth and ritual, Carmelo comes
of age and finds his identity.
Carmelo grew up in Sicily and came to
America at the age of 16. In 1977 he graduated from Montclair State University, after
spending a semester at the Universit De
Poitiers, in France. In 1982 Carmelo was

College Recognized by White

House for Community Service
Cumberland County College has been
named to the Presidents Higher
Education Community Service Honor
Roll. The award is the highest federal
recognition an institution of higher education may receive for its commitment to
community, service learning and civic
engagement.
Each year since 2006, the President of
the United States recognizes the nations
colleges and universities that support
exemplary community service programs
and raise the visibility of effective practices in campus-community partnerships.
This is the first year Cumberland
County College has applied for the distinction. Cumberland logged more than
7,000 service hours in 2012, including
international service to Belize, Hurricane
Sandy relief efforts, Earth Day activities,
and 177 students and staff members joined
in the colleges annual Martin Luther King
Jr. Days of Service. Thirty-nine service
learning courses were offered to more
than 400 students.
The Presidents Honor Roll recognizes
higher education institutions in four categories: General Community Service,
Interfaith Community Service, Economic
Opportunity, and Education. Cumberland
County College, Bergen Community
College and Raritan Valley Community
College are the only three community colleges in New Jersey to receive the distinction this year.

This award is a formal recognition of

the hard work of our students, faculty and
staff who have embraced the concept of
service and civic engagement, said CCC
President Dr. Thomas Isekenegbe. I am
very proud.
One of the goals of the Presidents
Higher Education Community Service
program is to increase public awareness of
the impact that campus service has on
communities and the nation. Cumberland
County Colleges commitment to forming
collaborative relationships throughout the
county resulted in the addition of a service learning component to many of its
course curriculums.
Cumberland County College encourages its students to learn that public service is necessary to strengthen the community. The service learning component is
one of the ways Cumberland County
College instills a sense of civic pride and
social responsibility, while nurturing
dynamic relationships. Following involvement in the service learning experience,
students often choose to continue serving
their communities long after their college
years.

Womans Club of Vineland Active in Community

The Woman's Club of Vineland, a
member of the General Federation of
Women's Clubs collected about 20
bags of non-perishable food and over
$500 during their November business
meeting. Norene Ritter, the chair person for this project along with club
members Dolores Misiewicz and
Josephine Pagano, packed up the
food and took it to the local food bank
at the First Methodist Church on
Landis Avenue.
LAURA BADGER, SOUTHERN DISTRICT VP
of the NJ State Federation of Women's
Clubs recently congratulated the Woman's
Club of Vineland for celebrating 115 years
and presented Carol Parks, President of the
Woman's Club of Vineland, with two certificatesone from the NJ State Federation of
Women's Clubs and one from the General
Federation of Women's Clubs.
Laura talked about the women of 1899
compared to the women today and how they faced the same things that concern
women today. They had to make family decisions, everyday decisions like what to
make for dinner and dealing with sick children and family members. They
were concerned for their community just as the women of today. The Woman's
Club of Vineland has been beneficial to Vineland for 115 years and plans to continue to give to the community for many more years.
SEVERAL BAGS OF BOOKS were donated to
the Friends of the Vineland Public Library book
sale in November. Annette Lipartito is the
library representative of the Woman's Club of
Vineland and chair of this target project of collecting books in October. Edna Weaver, a club
member, is helping Annette count and transports the books to the library. If anyone missed
the meeting and would still like to donate
books, take them to the library and let the librarian know that it is from the
Woman's Club of Vineland.

residents of the Veteran's Memorial Home
during their Holiday Party. The residents
look forward to receiving their own tin of
home baked goodies. This year 324 tins
were filled and taken to the home by coproject leaders Barbara McMahon and

Cupcakes and Cookies

Tis the season for all things festive.

is the season for all things festive! Id like to share three

recipes that you can bake, and
bring to family gatherings, parties or to
share with co-workers, neighbors or
friends. Be sure to let your children help
with age-appropriate tasks in the kitchen,
its important to let them learn through
hands-on experience; they will feel so
proud of their culinary accomplishments!
From my home to yours, may you have
a very Merry Christmas!

Gingerbread Cupcakes With

Cream Cheese Frosting
1 stick butter
1 cup unsulfured black strap molasses
1 cup sour cream
1 1/2 tsp. grated orange zest
2 1/3 cups unbleached all-purpose
flour
3/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
1/2 tsp. sea salt
Preheat the oven to 350. Line a muffin
pan with paper liners. Place butter and
molasses in a small saucepan and bring to
a boil over medium heat. Pour the mixture

Frosting:
1 pkg. (8 oz.) cream cheese,
at room temperature
1 stick butter, softened
1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
1/2 pound organic confectioners'
sugar, sifted
Mix cream cheese, butter and vanilla in
the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with
the paddle attachment until just combined. Add the sugar and mix until
smooth. When the cupcakes are completely cool, frost them generously and decorate as desired.

Spritz Cookies
1 cup butter, softened
2/3 cup raw sugar
3 egg yolks
1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. almond extract
1/2 tsp. sea salt
2 1/2 cups all-purpose unbleached
flour
Preheat oven to 375. In a large bowl
combine butter and sugar. Beat until light
and fluffy. Beat in the egg, vanilla and
almond extracts, and salt. Stir in the flour
just until mixed. Pack some of the dough
into a cookie press and fit the press with
the desired disk. Press the dough out onto
a lightly greased or parchment paper covered cookie sheet. Sprinkle each cookie
with sprinkles, if desired.
Bake 8 10 minutes or until cookies are
slightly golden around the edges. Transfer
cookies to a cooling rack to cool completely. Store cookies in an airtight container. I

LIHEAP Emergency Assistance

Offered by Gateway

the grapevine { 11 }

Gateway Community Action

Partnerships Low Income Home Energy
Assistance Program (LIHEAP or HEA) is
designed to help low-income families and
individuals meet home heating and medically necessary cooling costs.
Applications are accepted through April
30, 2015. LIHEAP is administered by the
NJ Department of Community Affairs.
To be eligible for LIHEAP benefits, the
applicant household must be responsible
for home heating or cooling costs, either
directly or included in the rent; and have
gross income at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. Call for a chart that gives
specific monthly gross income maximums
for FFY 2015. Persons who live in public
housing and/or receive rental assistance
are not eligible unless they pay for their
own heating/cooling costs directly to the
fuel supplier. The amount of the LIHEAP
heating benefit is determined by income,
household size, fuel type, and heating
region. This year, the medically necessary
cooling assistance benefit is set at $200.
An eligible household that heats with
natural gas or electricity may have its benefits directly forwarded to its utility company. Otherwise, in most cases eligible
households directly responsible to a fuel
supplier for payment of home heating
costs receive a two-party check in the
name of the applicant and the fuel supplier. Households whose heating costs are
included in their rent receive a single
party check made out to the eligible applicant. A household receiving medically
necessary cooling benefits also receives a
single party check.
Renters who live in public subsidized
housing with heating costs included in the
rent are not eligible to receive HEA or any
emergency assistance. The maximum
amount of Emergency Assistance for natural gas, electric, oil, propane and other
deliverable fuels is a one-time assistance
of up to $450. The maximum amount of
Emergency Assistance to prevent disconnection on non-heating electric accounts
continues to be up to $200.
Note the FFY 2015 LIHEAP application is also an application for the
Universal Service Fund Program (USF).
You can apply for two benefit programs at
the same time. USF is a program created
by the State of New Jersey to help make
natural gas and electric bills more affordable for low-income households. If you
are eligible, USF can lower the amount
you pay for gas and electricity. To be eligible, a household gross income must be at
or below 175% of the Federal Poverty
Level, (please refer to income guidelines
at your local office listed below), and pay
more than 3% of its annual income for
electric, or more than 3% for natural gas.
If a household has electric heat, it must
spend more than 6% of its annual income
on electricity to be eligible.
To apply for LIHEAP, USF, or Cooling

Assistance, please contact Gateway

Academy juniors
received their class
rings during a special
Mass and ceremony
held in the schools

During the meditation,
students placed photos
of themselves with
their OLMA sisters in a
scrapbook next to a
paragraph they wrote about what OLMA Sisterhood means to them. After the Mass
students and their parents enjoyed refreshments in the cafeteria.

12-month Introductory Rate

*This offer applies to new loans only. To obtain this Annual Percentage Rate you must have your monthly payment automatically debited
from a Newfield National Banks checking account, otherwise the rate is .25% higher. The rate for a home equity line of credit is 2.59% APR

ith the holiday season well

underway, the classic
Christmas songs have been
dusted off again to set the
proper Yuletide spirit. One such recording,
Nat King Coles venerated rendition of The
Christmas Song never fails to conjure the
images and emotions associated with this
time of year. And this season, Vinelanders
may have a special affinity with this singer
based on a recent revelation.
Coles rise to fame began with the formation of his jazz trio, originally called the
King Cole Swingers, in the late 1930s. Over
the following decade, this group appeared
on numerous radio shows. When Cole
began to display his vocal ability on various
tunes in the bands mostly instrumental
sets, a legend was born. He enjoyed his first
hit in 1943 with an original composition,
Straighten Up and Fly Right, and sealed
his status as a popular performer with the
first of his four renditions of The
Christmas Song in 1946. All the while he
continued to tour with his trio.
According to Vineland resident and jazz
musician Wayne Quairoli, who earlier this
year solved the mystery of where saxophonist John Coltrane performed in
Vineland in 1954, there was a story he was
told about Cole decades ago by Vineland
musician Carmen Galzerano.
Carmen is walking home from school
one day and he hears that Nat King Cole is
in town and that theyre playing in this little
bar that, at the time, was literally adjacent
to the high school, Quairoli said. This was
when Vineland High School was on Landis
Avenue. Its now Landis Junior High School.
This little tavern that was there, it was
like a little house. It was called Grosss
Tavern. Carmen heard that Nat King Cole
was in Vineland and thats where he was
supposed to be playing that night. So, on
his way home from school, he walks into
Grosss Tavern and sticks his head in the
door and there he is. The trio was in there
rehearsing for the gig.
Quairoli points out that the exact year
Cole appeared in Vineland remains hazy,
but the timeframe can be determined. It

had to be between 50 and 53 when he saw

Nat King Cole rehearsing in there, he said,
adding that they were the years Galzerano
attended Vineland High School.
It seems likely that the appearance
occurred early in Galzeranos high school
years. According to Daniel Mark Epsteins
biography of the singer, Nat King Cole, the
trios tours on the East Coast, all of which
included a stop in Philadelphia, took place
regularly in the late 1940s and at the start
of the 1950s. And sources indicate that
Coles growing popularity led to the disbanding of the trio by 1953.
Although the date of this historic occasion cant be determined, the history of the
building that housed Grosss Tavern is
known. It was this funky little house,
Quairoli recalled. It looks like it could have
been a one or two-bedroom house. It was
such a tiny, little place, and they actually took
the whole building up and moved it to a new
location. They took the whole building and
took it down to Mill Road and they built a
foundation for it down off of Landis and
Mill and it actually reopened as a bar there.
It lasted like another 20 years at Mill Road
and Landis Avenue and then eventually, I
guess, it just fell apart, so now the lots empty.
But the lot is still there. I can show you the
lot where it used to be. Its about 50 yards
off of the intersection of Mill and Landis.
Quairoli isnt certain if Galzerano
attended any of the performances by Nat
King Coles trio in Vineland. His age at the
time would most likely have prevented it.
Still, he had the opportunity to witness the
band rehearsing, and he preserved the fact
that Nat King Cole played in Vineland several years ahead of John Coltrane. And
Quairoli still has fond memories of the
moment this information was shared with
him. I can still remember when Carmen
told me, he said. I was like, Are you kidding me, man? Nat King Cole played at
Grosss Tavern? I
Anyone with additional information
about the Nat King Cole Trio's appearance
in Vineland is encouraged to contact The
Grapevine.

Inspira Health Network's School Based

Youth Services Program (SBYSP), included
in the Resources Aligned for Teens (RAFT)
at Vineland High School, participated in
Southwest Council's "Sticker Shock" event
recently at Hummel's Wine and Liquor in
Bridgeton.
Youth to Youth is led by RAFT Student
Support Counselor, Ray Adams. "Sticker
Shock is a youth-led initiative to change adult
attitudes about selling and providing alcohol
to minors, especially now that the season for
holiday parties and other celebrations is
here," said Brenda Smaniotto, RAFT director.
The program was intended to reach adults who may be tempted to buy alcohol
for young people under 21 who can't buy it legally themselves. Supervised youth
from the Cumberland County Healthy Communities Coalition's Youth Network and
Vineland High School- RAFT- SBYSP placed green neon stickers on cases of beer
and other alcoholic beverages for all to see that provide a strong reminder: "Keep it

SHELTER
Continued from cover
and has been inspected and been cleared
to begin accepting new residents.
At the dedication on December 15,
Michael P. Killeen, Board President, Rural
Development Corp., thanked all the volunteers, organizations and staff who tirelessly worked on the renovation. He said that
we are all part of a village and it shows
that every life matters.
He acknowledged the volunteers from
Redeemer Lutheran Church, including Ed
Morvay, project coordinator and Wayne
Grant, Representative of Thrivent
Financial and Pastor Gary for their support and dedication. They worked with
Christopher Smaniotto, maintenance person for the shelter.
The Thrivent Community at Redeemer
led by Morvay and Pastor Stiegler asked
how can we help? The congregation
gathered and prepared 125 welcome packets with pillows and personal care items
for incoming clients. This fall they gathered mens, womens, and childrens clothing for these clients.
Morvay recognized the Redeemer
Crew whose names are listed on a plaque
that will be hung in a prominent place in
the shelter.
Two crew members, Augusta Allen,
who prepared lunches for the crew and
Bob Penven were honored posthumously
for their dedication. The Day Room was
dedicated in their honor.
Killeen also acknowledged the efforts
put forth in securing transit bus stop shelters for the clients. Today the clients are
protected from the elements as they await
the bus to take them to their appointments or for shopping.
More than $25,000 was raised by
Redeemer Lutheran Church through
grants from the Thrivent Foundation,
New Jersey Fund for Mission and private
grants.
In addition, the ELCA, New Jersey

Synod, through its Mission Projects

Initiative granted an $8,000 donation to
help the shelter complete its renovations.

Pastor Gary presented the check to

A NEW YEARS EVE CELEBRATION

1058 E. Landis Ave., Vineland. The exhibit

includes original watercolor and acrylic
paintings and most of the art is available
for purchase. Reid, a graduate of Drexel
University and a retired Home Economics
teacher, enjoys painting in watercolor and
acrylics, doing pencil drawings and photography. She finds each medium is different
and has its own quality and method. She uses photography as both reference material for her paintings and as finished artwork.
Reid has studied painting with Alex Alampi, Tony
Parisi, Bobbie Berg, Marie Natale, Charles Reid, Mel
Stabin and Michele Byrne. Her paintings, drawings,
and photographs are exhibited regularly at many
South Jersey Shows and she has won numerous
awards for her work. She gives private lessons in
both watercolor and acrylic painting.
Reid is a founding member of Salem County Art
League, a member of Gloucester County Art
League, Art Educators of Southern New Jersey, and
Hammonton Art Center.

Saving Lives-Building Homes: The Habitat Superheroes

The exhibition Saving Lives-Building Homes: The Habitat Superheroes is scheduled to be on display at Vineland Public Library, 1058 E. Landis Avenue, January
531, 2015. This display is a celebration of all the imaginative superhero drawings
and designs that Habitat for Humanity received from the youth within Cumberland
County. Habitat for Humanity helps families in need every four minutes, thanks to
strong and devoted heroes; this exhibition is in celebration of them.
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit Christian-based ministry dedicated to the eradication of low-income housing both nationally and globally. While the organization has
had the opportunity to work with waves of volunteers from all southern New Jersey
regions and of varying ages, often times the children of Cumberland County, due to liability conflicts, feel that they cannot contribute to Habitats work within the community.
The search for Habitats superhero was a contest crafted for this specific demographicchildren under the age of 14, as a community building activity. The Habitat
superhero had to embody the ideals of Habitat for Humanity- a vigilante with sharp
power tools and apathy for the lack of housing within his or her community.
Out of many submissions from Anthony Rossi Intermediate School, The Boys and
Girls Club of Vineland, the Vineland Public Library, and the Girl Scout Troop #52447,
Cumberland County Habitat for Humanity selected two superheroes to be their mascot on future ads and paraphernalia. All students who submitted a cartoon or drawing were inducted into Cumberland County Habitat for Humanitys young hero
league for saving their community by showing creative power in their design and
volunteering their time and efforts to bringing awareness to a global housing shortage in need of a herotheir hero.
The two winning designs were: Mr. Handiman by Francis Virtucio from Rossi
Intermediate School and Captain Constructor by Dominick Forgen from Bishop Shad
Regional School.
