Lehigh City Council

without city clerk,
mayor after Dec. 15

The Lehigh City Council terminated City

Clerk Wanda Ganeff at a special meeting on
Monday, Dec. 15.
And Lehigh Mayor Mark Johnson submitted his resignation.
Johnson indicated that he wanted to spend
more time with his family. And the Lehigh City
Council voted 4-1 to terminate City Clerk Wanda Ganeff, citing poor performance.
Wanda Ganeff has been City Clerk for many
years in Lehigh. She has an accounting degree
and has taken many workshops to update her
job skills.
Council membrr Troy Twito said he wanted
the Lehigh City council to vote on whether to
terminate Ganeff because of her performance in
collecting delinquent utility bills. He has been
on the Utility Commission for five months, and
Ganeff has been in charge of the utility committee since Nov. 10. Johnson was in charge before
her according to the Associated Press and the
Fort Dodge Messenger.
Ganeff said the unpaid bills werent her
problem because she wasnt in charge then.
Its been a complete witch hunt since the first
of January, she said.
Johnson was elected mayor of Lehigh in
2013.
The council also unanimously voted Monday to appoint a new mayor and is expected to
make the appointment during its Jan. 22 meeting. If the council doesnt appoint a mayor within 65 days of Johnsons resignation, a special
election to fill the position will happen by default.

Jags survive St. Marys

in a thriller, 66-61

By Tyler Anderson / Dayton Review-Gowrie

News
The Panther Pit was rocking and St. Marys
had the speed, but it was Southeast Valleys size
and toughness that got the job done. In Twin
Lakes Conference action on Dec. 19, the Jaguars (5-3) eluded St. Marys by a score of 66-61
in Storm Lake.
Before the game, we thought we can get
some scoring inside, Kyle Johnson, Jaguars
head coach, said. The guys got the ball to
[leading scorer Dakota Jaeschke] really good
and he was aggressive in there. He went after
the boards on those second shots and rebounds.
Both squads would exchange blows in the
beginning, before St. Marys would assume an
early 5-2 lead. With six and half minutes remaining in the first, sophomore forward Dakota
Jaeschke would score on the put back to keep
a one point gap. Both Southeast Valley and St.
Marys would exchange leads and ties, all before junior guard Cade King would sink a three
from the corner to give the Jags a 20-18 lead by
the first buzzer.
I really thought that Cade King was really
aggressive in that first half and really did a great
job putting the pressure on and getting some
big buckets, Johnson said of Kings performance.
The second quarter displayed even more ferocity between the two squads, each exchanging visits to the charity stripe early on. While
the Jaguars would manage out a 29-25 advantage with less than five until the half, St. Marys
would tie it up at 33 all with a six point run from
Eric Broich.
Both sides continued to battle for supremacy, before Southeast Valley went into the locker
room with a marginal 37-36 lead. Returning
from the break, Jaeschke would use his size
to his advantage and open up a 41-36 lead for
the Jaguars. Junior guard Logan Boerner would
also aid in Jaeschke, knocking in a three from
the right hand side of the arch to give the Jags a
nine point lead with more than four minutes in
the third quarter.
The Panthers would manage to keep the
game within six, before Conner Conrad would
drive it in for a score. St. Marys Demers would
not let the Jaguars get away, as another threepointer kept the Panthers within seven. Along
with a Riley Godfredson free throw, the Panthers would trail 54-48 by the third buzzer.
Jaeschke would begin the final stretch with
four points from the post, the Jags took a 60-52
lead with 6:09 left in the contest. Despite the
advantage, the Panthers would creep back into
the game before a Boerner three would keep
the Jags ahead by five with 3:40 remaining. In
a turn for the best, St. Marys Demers would get
fouled out, hampering the Panthers ability to
score from threeland.
With 1:08 left, St. Marys managed to keep
the game within three. Undeterred, the Jaguars
would play keep away from the Panthers until
King was fouled and brought to the line. From
there on out, Southeast Valley was able to resort
to free throws and seal the win.
Jaeschke led Southeast Valley with 22
points, followed by King with 16 points and
Conrad with 10 points. St. Marys was led by
Josh Demers with 23 points while Broich and
Michael Demers contributed with 12 and 11
points respectively.
Obviously, we had a little size there, Johnson said. I knew Dakota was very good inside,
he had a soft touch and hes real steady. I knew
he would come on. [St. Marys] were in that box
zone with Conner, and it was hard to get him
some good looks. So we basically stayed in our
normal offense for what we were trying to do.

Operation Angel Tree

Thank You!
Christmas is a comin

Christmas is coming the goose is getting

fat; please put a penny in the old mans hat. If
you havent got a penny, a hapenny will do. If
you havent got that then God Bless You!
I remember as a very little girl each year
my Mom would recite that old English verse to
me. I didnt quite understand it then but I liked
the rhythm of the poem. A half penny and a
penny were the lowest coins in England and I
assume worth almost nothing. That is where our
one cent coin gets its common name of penny as it is made of copper as were the British
coins, neither of which is a part of their current
coinage. This verse was most likely quite appropriate in its time and in our great depression
days, the days of my earliest youth. Nine or ten
of those coins would purchase a loaf of bread.
One penny would buy a big stick of candy or an
all day sucker.
While I was doing some computer research I came across some more interesting information, a portion of which I will share with
you. The following bits are direct quotes from
Mr. Internet --- Despite the tales of three wise
men paying homage to baby Jesus, the Bible
never gives a number. Matthews gospel refers
to merely wise men. (Could it have started
from there being three gifts mentioned?) Carols
began as an old English custom called Wassailing, toasting neighbours to a long life. There is
no reference to angels singing anywhere in the
Bible. (Its nice to think of a heavenly choir
of angels though.) Many theologians estimate
that Jesus wasnt born on December 25th but
sometime in September between 6 BC and 43
AD. Jesus was probably born in a cave and not
in a wooden stable, say Biblical scholars. While
many of our customs and forms of celebrating
Christmas have developed over the years and
blended from many ethnic cultures, we still
place the focus on Christs birth in not only our
worship services but our secular and family celebrations.
An e-mail buddy recently sent me a
message which, at the end, had some things to
be thankful for. I am sharing them with you but
with a bit of Sara slant.
Even though I clutch my blanket and
growl when the alarm rings, thank you Lord
that I can hear. There are many who are deaf.
--- Even though I keep my eyes closed against
the morning light as long as possible, thank
you Lord that I can see. Many are blind. --Even though I huddle in my bed and put off
rising, thank you Lord for that warm bed, and
the strength to rise. There are many who have
no bed. There are many who do not have the
strength to rise. --- Even though the first hour

so loud, thank you Lord. - Even though some
of us are old and sometimes lonely, thank you
Lord for family and friends. There are many

our meal tables never look like those pictures

modest, thank you Lord FOR LIFE!
This is the time of year we reminisce and

should continue being thankful and remembering others in special ways. I hope all my

times with friends and families, remembering
the reason for this season.

Jaguar girls hold off

St. Marys, 37-30

By Tyler Anderson / Dayton Review-Gowrie

News
It wasnt pretty, but the Southeast Valley
girls basketball team got it done. In a rather
low scoring affair, the Lady Jaguars defeated St.
Marys of Storm Lake, 37-30 on Dec. 19.
You know, it was a defensive battle that we
won, Amber Sorenson, assistant coach for the
Lady Jags, said. I told them coming into this
game I didnt want to let [St. Marys] score very
many points. I wanted the defensive pressure to
come up a notch. We have to have our defense
there to rely on, because if we cant put points
on the board, we have to keep our opponents
from putting points on the board.
The Panthers began the game by taking
advantage of Jaguar fouls and turnovers, running out to an early 3-0 lead with less than
seven minutes remaining. The Lady Jags were
held scoreless until five minutes left in the first
quarter, where junior guard Josie Breitsprecher
was brought to the charity stripe. This sparked
a 6-0 run with the help of junior guard Cassie
Zinnels three-pointer, extending the Southeast
Valley lead to 6-3 by the end of the first buzzer.
The second quarter would continue to see
the Jaguar girls and Panthers trade possessions
until both sides would exchange scores with six
and half minutes remaining. Southeast Valley
led by as much as seven with 3:24 to go, until
the Panthers bridged the gap to two with less
than 30 seconds left.
However, junior forward Aaliyah Scott
would knock in a backdoor shot to keep Southeast Valleys lead intact by the break.
Coming back from halftime, the Jaguar girls
would lead by as much as seven points with less
than three minutes into the third quarter. The
Panthers would rebound from the deficit, coming within three with a minute remaining. Breitsprecher would respond with a quick layup as
the third buzzer.
St. Marys would begin the final quarter
with a score, before Zinnels second three of the
game kept the Panthers at arms length. With
another score from senior guard Nicole Williams, Southeast Valley took an eight point lead
with six minutes remaining.
Despite the Lady Jag lead, the Panthers

For the past 10 years Operation Angel Tree has

been a success thanks to a combined effort between the
businesses, organizations, churches, and individuals
in the communities of the Southeast Webster Grand
Community School District. This year the project
served 78 children and 30 families.
We have many people to thank for their efforts
and hard work again this year.
The Operation Angel Tree committee at the elementary school does a lot of the preparations, mailings, organization and distribution of the project. The
students in the Dayton building are involved with the
project by bringing in food items for the food drive.
The 4th graders help carry the food to the church for
distribution and organize it for the families. The families are able to utilize an on site food pantry just for
Operation Angel Tree thanks to the students donations.
We are also very fortunate to have retired school
personel, Barb Peterston, Shirley Gustafson, Diana
VanGilder, and Sharon Heggen assisting with the organization and distribution of this project. The churches,
organizations, businesses, and individuals within the
communities make this project possible through generous contributions/donations which provide food
vouchers for the families to use at the local Dayton
Community Grocery Store as well as providing gifts to
the children. We are always in need of funds to ensure
that the families receive food vouchers each year. We
are also grateful for the donation of hats and mittens as
well as gently used coats, snowpants and boots.
A big thank you to the Emanuel Lutheran Church
in Dayton for the use of the church for organiztion and
distribution of this worthy project. The Security Savings Banks play a very important part in the distribution of the angels and their partnership in this project
is very much appreciated. As you can see, this project
involves many, many generous hands and a big thank
you again this year to all of those involved in making
Operation Angel Tree 2014 a huge success. We look
forward to another great year in 2015.

continued to climb back with a Mackenzie Levan jumper, as St. Marys remained within six
points with 2:54 remaining. The Jaguar girls
would be hampered by turnovers and fouls, allowing St. Marys to trail by two with a minute left. In a proverbial race to the finish, it was
Breitsprecher, Williams and Rittgers who came
through for the Lady Jags at the free throw line.
Breitsprecher would lead the Lady Jaguars
with 11 points, followed by Zinnel with eight
points and Williams with seven. St. Marys
were led by Riley Lenhart with 7 points, while
cousins Katie Lenhart and Trisha Lenhart contributed with six points. Mackenzie Levan also
added six points for the Panthers.
The Lady Jags are now 6-3 and will travel
to Humboldt on Dec. 22. St. Marys (2-6) will
not return to the court until Jan. 9, where the
Panthers will face South Central Calhoun.
We want to go into the break playing strong

off, Sorenson said. We wont play again until

Were you there? The 1st Annual Progressive Community Christmas Program by the
Stratford area churches is now history but has
left a legacy of memories. The support from the
community and the visitors was wonderful as
together we experienced a new understanding
of the Christmas story.
God used a young woman, a carpenter, the
elderly wife of a priest, lowly shepherds and
their animals, angels,a time of taxation, an innkeeper, a stable (and a little burro which checked
out the baby in the manger), a special star, a
cruel king, and wise men with their special gifts
from a far country to tell about the birth of His
Son, Jesus, the Savior. "What a Strange Way to
Save The World."
All ages played the roles, and all ages joined
in the journey and sang together the beautiful
carols of Christmas. Approximately 120 stayed
to share the refreshment and fellowship time
following the program.
Thank you players and thank you community. May you have a new vision of Christmas
this year, and share the story with your families
as was done by those who were there.

Gary Sandholm, Iowa State Grad,

has career in economic development
Involved in Dayton real estate. . .

By: Nicole Presley

Gary Sandholm remembers the little things
about Dayton. He recalls when Dayton went
from gravel to pavement, high school sports and
the racetrack around the Dayton Rodeo.
While living in Dayton as a kid during the
50s and 60s, Gary said he didnt fully comprehend how big the world is.
Dayton was a fun place. We didnt realize
how big the world was because we didnt have
the communication systems that are available
today, said Gary. At one time there was only
one television station that was in central Iowa.
That was WOI when it was a part of Iowa State
University.
In the 1950s Dayton was transformed from
gravel roads to paved roads.
I remember Main Street was paved and
the gutter was installed. It made quite a difference. We lived, for a time, across the street from
George Strandberg who was the town marshal,
said Gary.
Kids would sometimes, in the middle
of the night, coast up and stop in front of our
house and the Strandberg house and squeal their
tiresby the time he could get out of the house
and get in his truck whoever was squealing the
tires was long out of town.
During Garys high school career the Dayton
High School baseball team was state champions
in Pocahontas County. The team from Pocahontas Catholic High School was expected to win,
but Dayton was able to beat them in what Gary
describes as an exciting game.
After graduating from Dayton High School
in 1965 Gary attended Iowa State University
for Major Industrial Administration. During
this time Iowa State was preparing for the baby
boomer generation that would soon be going to
college.
Gary remembers classrooms and residence
halls being built during his stay at Iowa State,
as well as the NCAA wrestling tournament that
Iowa State won.
The armory at Iowa State, where the
wrestling meets were held at that time, just exploded because these were two extremely fine

Gary Sandholm
wrestlers, said Gary.
Enjoying his adventure at Iowa State, Gary
was able to check in on Dayton somewhat frequently.
I still kept 40 miles from Dayton so that I
was back in Dayton on a regular basis on weekends. Not every weekend, but once or twice a
month, said Gary.
After graduating from Iowa State in 1969
Gary became a sales representative at a Hormel packing plant in Fort Dodge. Later he was
a motorcycle dealer
for Yamaha and then
proceeded to his next
job, insurance and real
estate.
For a time Gary
worked at Sandholm
Real Estate and Insurance. While working
for Sandholm Insurance he married his
wife Loretta, who he
had known during

his childhood. They were both members of the
same church and she had also taken piano lessons from his mother.
We had run into each other and known
each other for many, many years. I asked her to
go out and I guess she was dumb enough to say
yes; she would go out with me. We eventually g
married, said Gary.
After selling real estate for many years Gary
now has a career in economic development.
He recruits businesses, works with businesses
within the community, helping a company in
the community and marketing and working
with the community itself.
In his free time Gary likes to bicycle, go

during the winter. As for advice on life, Gary
says honesty is the best policy.
Be honest with yourself, be honest with
other people, take pride in what you do and who
you are and always try to do your best.

Satan is lurking

Now the serpent was more crafty than

any of the wild animals the Lord God had
made. He said to the woman, did God really
say, you must not eat from any tree in the garden? Genesis 3:1
When a small boy was asked, how do
you know when Satan is near? He replied,
well, you just look for the pitch fork! The
truth is, Satan does not want Christians to
know that he is near, but rather he waits for us
to lower our guard...and then, when we least
expect it, he gets us. He doesnt come with a
pitchfork, but through lies about the Word of
God. He comes appealing to our own wishes
and desires.
Perhaps there is no greater example of
this than in Genesis 3, when the serpent talks
to Eve, and asks her a simple question, did
God *really say.. It seems like such a simple
question, but in all its simplicity the greatest
danger is found. In our world today we hear
theologians saying, did God really say.. or
did Jesus really say..?
We know through reading that the
next thing Satan says to Eve is, God said you
would die? Well, sure - maybe you will, but
you dont need to worry about it right now.
Then Satan uses Eve by having her give the
fruit to her husband, which causes Adam to
fall, and therefore, all of man will be condemned. (Genesis 3:2-6)
When we look at this Scripture, it
seems like such a trivial thing. A piece of fruit.
Satan goes on to tell her that she will know
what is right and wrong, just like God. Yet,

what Eve felt was a trivial thing wasnt such a

small matter to God.
Today we have many different ideas on
the Bible. Just as Satan did, many of todays
Christians are challenging Gods Word, and
whether it should be taken literally, or metaphorically. We question whether His commandments were meant for 2,000 years ago,
or whether they are meant for today. We even
question whether the Gospels are correct, since
they arent exactly alike.
Today, Satan is very active in the
world...not with a pitchfork, but with lies about
the Word of God. Today, Satan is whispering
in our ears...did God really say??? Are we
prepared to do what God really did say? Are we
prepared to do what God tells us in His Word?
Until next week...be aware that Satan is
near. You wont see any pitchforks, but watch
that he isnt telling you lies and questioning
Gods Word.

Basketball team continue their tough schedule
on during the week of December 15-19, 2014.
The young jags had a tough three game stretch
with two of the contest being on the road.
On Monday, December 15, 2015 the Jags
got to play at home in which they had not done
so far in the Month of December. The Jags
played host to PAC/LM. The contest was a
battle for SEV all the way with SEV taking a
8-7 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter remained very even as well with PAC/LM
winning that quarter by a score of 7-8 so the
game was deadlocked at 15 at half. In the third
quarter both teams still stayed very even not letting each other pull away. SEV did get a slim
6 point lead but both teams scored 12 points
in the quarter and remained tied going to the
fourth were PAC/LM outscored the Jags 11-9
and won the contest 38-36. Leading the way in
scoring for SEV was Chase Swieter with 14,
Carter Lane had 8, Hunter Kruse had 7, Quinton Clancy had 3 and Jared Kastendieck and
Ross Halligan each had two point each for the
Jags. Coach Valentine commented by saying
that was the most even hard fought 7th grade
games he had seen in a very long time. SEV
put up a great effort and should be proud of the
game they played.
On Tuesday, December 16, 2014 the Jags
headed back out on the road again to travel to
Rockwell City to do battle with the Titans of
SCCC. SEV trailed 1`2-8 after one quarter and
were down 17-15 at halftime. SEV was outscored 10-8 in the third quarter but did win the
fourth quarter outscoring SCCC 12-9 but ended

The Southeast Valley 8th grade lost to Ogden 39-34. The Jags led for most of the game,
but were unable to get the offense going to finish out the game.
The Jags had a 7-2 lead at the end of the
first quarter and used solid defense and steals to
gain an early advantage. The Jags went into the
halftime break with an 18 -11 lead.
Struggling to get the ball in the basket in
the third quarter proved to be costly for the Jags
as they fell behind for the first time 23-20. In a
wild high scoring fourth quarter the Jags could
never regain control and lost 39-34.
Points scored from the night are: Jackson
Housken, Max Davis, and Zach Graves two
points; Dillon Sytsma, Ben Carlson, Mason
Ackerson, Kenny Blunk, and Nyles Johnson
nine points; Nate Montgomery, JJ Graves, Ran- Continued on page 12...

g
Larry Allen Hansen, 69, of Dayton, Iowa
died
on December 19, 2014. He was surroundV
ed by his wife and daughters at his home, and
passed peacefully after a courageous battle with
s cancer. Excellent, compassionate care was proo vided by Unity Point Hospice.
He was born on May 11, 1945 in Des
f
Moines,
Iowa, the only son of Olaf and Pearl
d
- (Twedt) Hansen. Larry grew up in Huxley,
Iowa, and attended Huxley Consolidated Eld ementary School and Ballard High School.
Larry attended Drake University to pursue a
degree in Music Education, receiving both BA
and MA degrees. Later he received certification
as a secondary school principal at Iowa State
University.
He married his high school sweetheart,
Linda Jordan, on August 12, 1967, at Palestine
Lutheran Church in Huxley. His first job was at
Union-Whitten Community Schools that same
year, where he taught instrumental music. In
1968 they moved to Dayton, where they stayed
for the remainder of his life.
Mr. Hansen taught band and music to
students in grades 5-12 in Dayton Community
School, Central Webster and later Southeast
LWebster until retiring in 2000. From beginning students learning their first notes, to high
schoolers trying out for state competitions, Larry was dedicated to every level of music educal
tion. He made sure everyone could get an instrument that needed one, gave private lessons,
and proudly marched with his students in every
p
Labor Day parade.
Never one to sit idle, Larry held a number
of other positions in the community - both paid
,
and volunteer. He was a bus driver, golf coach,
athletic director, referee and score-keeper at
school. In the summer he worked for Lundberg
Heating and Cooling, Grandview Care Center
and the City of Dayton. Both Larry and Linda
were active in their church, Emanuel Lutheran
in Dayton and then Stratford Evangelical Lutheran. Over the last 20 years Larry was a motorcoach driver for Hawkeye Stages/Northwest
Iowa Transportation.
Larry was instrumental in developing the
Dayton Rescue Squad and stayed active for 30
years. He was also a volunteer fireman for 22
years. He worked with a close-knit group of
people who saved hundreds of lives and became lifelong friends through these two organizations. His ability to deal with injuries and
emergency situations was a gift that he shared
in so many ways.
Larry was a wonderful trumpet player, and
stayed very active as a musician. He was a

member of the Fort Dodge Symphony, Central

Iowa Symphony Quintet, and Tarnished Brass.
His longest running gig was with the Ames Municipal Band, which he joined in high school.
He was also the guy behind the curtain at hundreds of high school basketball games playing
along with the pep band during half time. His
take on Proud Mary was legendary.
Larry and Linda had two daughters Laura
Jeanne and Letitia Jan. The Hansen girls learned
about the importance of a good work ethic, community involvement, that the arts are essential in
our lives. Life lessons included how to drive a
stick-shift, the intricacies of lawn care, and golf
etiquette. He also tried to teach the importance
of reading manuals before starting something,
being on time and good navigational directions.
However those didnt really stick. Though he
wont be with us to enjoy our Christmas Eve
lefse dinner, we will always carry on his Norwegian tradition.
Larry is survived by his best friend and
wife, Linda, of Dayton; daughter Laura (Teske)
and husband Todd; daughter Letitia (Kenemer)
and husband Hugo; two grandchildren, Kira
Pearl Marcott and Harvey Wyatt Kenemer, who
were the absolute joys of his life. Also brotherin-law and sister-in-law Jerold and Joyce Peterson (Ames); niece Jennifer Kreutner (Vinton)
and nephew Jarrett Peterson (Ankeny) and their
families.
He was preceded in death by his parents,
Olaf and Pearl Hansen and his beloved dog,
Benji.
It was Larrys wishes to be cremated. Visitation will be Sunday, December 21, from 4:00 to
7:00 p.m., at the Evangelical Lutheran Church
in Stratford. A Celebration of Life will be held
2:00 p.m., Monday, December 22, at Emanuel
Lutheran Church in Dayton. For online condolences & obituaries please visit: www.carsonstappfuneralhome.com

up losing the contest 40-34. Coach V commented on the game by saying that the whole game
we seemed to be trying to get over the hump but
never could, SCCC had three good players that
we could not contain that gave up problems,
SEV was lead by Chase Swieter with 16
points, Carter Lane had 8, Hunter Kruse had
4 Ross, Halligan, Mason Goodwin, and Lucas
Samuelson rounded out the scoring with 2 each.
On Friday, December 19th, 2014 the Jags
were determined to end the week on a good
note as they traveled to Lake View to compete
against the Raiders of East Sac County. The
Jags applied some pesky full court pressure and
never looked back take a 8-4 first quarter advantage and lead 16-10 at the half. The offense
really exploded in the third quarter outscoring
East Sac 14-2 and went away to win the game
39-19. Leading the way for SEV was Hunter
Kruse with 16 points, followed by Carter Lane
with 9, Ross Halligan and Chase Swieter each
had 6 and Lincoln Miller rounded out the scoring with 2 points. The Jags will now have some

Both teams fought hard. . .

The Southeast Valley JH Girls Basketball teams played South Central Calhoun at
Burnside Tuesday night. The 7th grade picked
up a solid 27-10 victory with Makenzie Crampton and Cassie Bergland leading the way with
eight points each.

The Jags got outstanding wing play
from Viatris Scott and solid all around play
from Jaynie Ferrari. The 7th grade improves to
3-2 on the season.

The 8th grade dropped a tought 16-12
decision to the Titans however I could not be
more proud of the effort these young ladies
gave against a very good SCC team.

This was a true team effort with the girls
fighting to the very end, The first thing worth
mentioning is the outstanding defensive efforts
by, Kasey Lundberg, Sammy Alphs, Shelby
Cummins, Maddi Jaescke and Lanie Nelson.

The Jags also got outstanding post play
from Cassidy Lambert and solid guard play
from Morgan Castenson. The 8th grade is now
2-3 on the season.
