Increasing the accessibility of museums and galleries
for people with disabilities
Sarajevo, 13 October 2014 - Foundation Cultural Heritage without Borders (CHwB) and Balkan Museum Network (BMN) in the next 12 months will Implement the the project "People with disabilities in museums." The project will be implemented through a three-day training workshops in Mostar, Banja Luka, Sarajevo, Tuzla and Zenica, and the participants will be museum professionals, practitioners, representatives of non-governmental sector, artists and people with disabilities. This project aims to increase the accessibility of museums and galleries for people with disabilities to enable their participation in the activities carried out by museums and also to strengthen connections between museums and associations of persons with disabilities, in order to create a basis for good cooperation in the future. The first workshop is scheduled to take place in Mostar from 15 to 17 October in area of "Public institution Museum of Herzegovina ". The workshops consist of theoretical and practical parts through which participants will learn more about the social model of disability and the ways in which museums can increase the accessibility of their premises and activities for people with disabilities. Participants will be introduced to manual "Disability - Set of tools and documents on disability which is suitable for museums" as well as positive examples of museums in the region that are in cooperation with the Balkan Museum Network will improve their accessibility. Within the practical part of the workshop, participants will learn about the mechanism of production and use of tactile pictures in museums and galleries. This project is funded by the American Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. Foundation CHwB is a Swedish non-governmental organization founded in 1995. CHwB through various projects deals with the promotion, protection and preservation of cultural heritage, and advocates for equal rights of all persons to cultural heritage.
