10.1 Introduction
10.1.1 Application
SDCCH dynamic adjustment performs the following functions:
In the GSM system, most types of calls need to use signaling channel such as location update
and point-to-point message. The voice and data calls also need to use the signaling channel
for a short time when setting up a call.
The number of signaling channels depends on the traffic model, the current traffic
distribution, and the HO statistics.
The following describes how the three factors influence the number of signaling channels.
The cells at the edge of the location areas have more location update services. So they
need more SDCCHs than the general cells do.
When the number of the GSM users suddenly increases, many users cannot have access
to the network. In this case, the TCHs are transformed into SDCCHs. Then most users
can have access to the network, however, calling can still not be ensured.
SDCCH dynamic adjustment lowers the request for exactness of the quantity of the signaling
channels and expands the system capacity.
10.1.2 Availability
All the versions support SDCCH dynamic adjustment without additional software and
hardware.
10.1.3 Restrictions
SDCCH dynamic adjustment occupies the TCHs and thus lowers the traffic bearer capability
of the cell.

When the number of idle SDCCHs is less than two, the system adjusts a proper full-rate
TCH to eight SDCCHs to expand the SDCCH capacity.
If the number of SDCCH is more than ten for a continuous period of time, the system
switches eight SDCCHs back to full-rate TCHs.
To adjust the SDCCH as early as possible, set the number larger in Idle SD Thrsh..
To switch back to the TCH, set the value smaller in TCH Min. Recovery Time.
