Capacity crowds
pack screenings
of The Interview
NEW YORK (AP) Critics and early viewers agree
that The Interview is less than a masterpiece. But thanks
to threats from hackers that nearly derailed its release, it has
become an event.
Hundreds of theaters Thursday, from The Edge 8 in
Greenville, Alabama, to Michael Moores Bijou by the Bay in
Traverse City, Michigan, made special holiday arrangements
for the Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy depicting the assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Sony Pictures
had initially called off the release after major theater chains
dropped the movie that was to have opened on as many as
3,000 screens.
But with President Obama among others criticizing the decision, Sony officials changed their minds. The
Interview became available on a variety of digital platforms Wednesday afternoon, including Google Play, YouTube
Movies, Microsofts Xbox Video and a separate Sony website.
Meanwhile, Sony and independent theaters agreed to release it
in over 300 venues on Christmas.

A deeper look at the Nativity

and Christmas tree

That

by HELEN KAVERMAN

The horse and the elephant with the shepherd. (Submitted photos)

The complete Nativity set in the Glandorf Church.

The King, the camel and the caretaker (at Glandorf).

Nearly everyone has a
Christmas tree these days.
Two of our trees from the
60s were planted outside
and now stand taller than the
house. Now I use an artificial
tree.one that can be carried
upstairs for storage without
taking it all apart.
Most historians give

the Germans credit for the

Christmas tree. The most
popular legend says that in
about 1530, Martin Luther
was struck by the beauty
of the night sky, when he
was walking home through
the forest. The starlight was
dancing off the evergreen
branches. Luther chopped

down a tree and brought it

home, where he lit it with
candles in an effort to duplicate the starlight night.
Another Christian legend attributes the origin of
the Christmas tree to a dramatic encounter between St.
Boniface and the German
pagans in the 720s. St.

Boniface was traveling

through the forest and happened upon a group of people
gathered around an oak tree
preparing to offer sacrifice
to their god, Thor. In protest,
St. Boniface struck down the
oak tree with an ax or a single blow from his fist. In any
event, a small fir tree sprang
up in the spot where the oak
tree once stood. St. Boniface
informed the people that this
was the Tree of Life, representing Christ. He told them
this shall be your Holy Tree.
It is the sign of endless life
for it remains evergreen and
points toward heaven.
Way back in time, the
Romans honored Saturn,
god of agriculture, with
their Saturnalia. It was a
time for merriment, visiting
friends, feasting and dancing. Romans trimmed trees
with trinkets and sometimes
placed 12 candles on the
branches with an image of
the sun god on top.
At this same season,
the Druids honored their
chief god, Odin, by tying
gilded apples on the trees.
Christianity continued with
these winter rites but changed
them to honor Christ. They
did not do away with all
the seasonal celebrations
because it would be upsetting

to people who had converted

to Christianity.
St. Francis of Assisi gets
credit for the popularity of the
crche (crib) or Nativity Set.
The earliest known depiction
of the Nativity dates from
about 380 AD in the burial
chamber of a Christian family in Romes St. Sebastian
Catacombs.
St. Francis popularized
the use of the crib when
on Christmas Eve in 1223,
he re-staged the original
Bethlehem, near Greccio.
There was a real peasant
family with a baby in the hay
in the manger, along with
real animals and shepherds.
St. Franciss intention was
to emphasize the humanity
of the Nativity and make the
miracle real to the people of
that time who could not read
or write. For the first time, it
is asserted; many understood
the true meaning of that event
in the stable in Bethlehem.
The popularity of St.
Franciss crche spread
throughout
the
world.
Churches began to have replicas of the Christmas Crib
and some became very elaborate. Now many of us have
a Nativity set in our homes.
Some of us let ours up till
Jan. 6, the Feast of the Three
Kings.

Our Delphos St. Johns

Parish has a beautiful
Nativity set, as do most of
the churches. Several churches and the Delphos Public
Library have crches outside
on the lawn.
One of the most beautiful and the most unusual
Nativity set is in St. Johns
Catholic Church in Glandorf.
The statues are not only
beautiful, they are very old.
One thing special about this
set is the Three Wise Men
and how they arrived. Most
sets just feature a camel as
their means of transportation but in Glandorf, you will
find a camel, a horse and
an elephant. They represent
the animals which furnished
transportation for the Three
Wise Men and others on the
three continents known to
man at that time. The camel
was for Africa, the horse for
Europe and the elephant for
Asia. Put this church and the
Nativity set on your must see
list for this Christmas season
as you celebrate the birth of
Our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Heres wishing you all a
happy and blessed Christmas
season and May God Bless
You in the New Year and
Happy Hanukkah to all our
Jewish friends.

Tiptoeing through the minefield of holiday symbols

Anyone passing the Hoffman home in

the Cincinnati suburbs during the holidays
will see festive blue and white lights and
an inflatable bear in the front yard -- a bear
wearing a Santa cap and holding a candy
cane.
This is where things got complicated,
with a typically blunt question from a child:
Should Jews have a bear in the yard during
Hanukkah?
I said it was a Jewish bear, said Neal
Hoffman, a marketing executive. One of
our boys came right back with: What about
the candy cane? Dont candy canes have
something to do with Christmas? I said I
didnt think there was anything specifically
Christian about a candy cane. Is there?
Well, thats complicated, too, since the
candy cane often shown with Santa Claus
is a symbol that links the shopping-mall
superstar back through the mists of history
to the 4th centurys St. Nicholas of Myra,
in Asia Minor. The saint was a bishop and,
thus, this spiritual shepherd carried a crook
staff -- which in Western church tradition is
shaped like a large candy cane.
The main thing is that I want my
kids to know that theyre Jewish and our
celebration of the holidays is different, said
Hoffman. They also know Mommy is a
Catholic and we celebrate both holidays,

TERRY MATTINGLY

On
Religion
but we really celebrate Hanukkah -- big
time.
Were in both worlds, but were trying
to make a statement that were different and
that this is a good thing.
The holiday puzzle is really complicated
during Hanukkah, the eight-day festival of
lights that began at sundown on Dec. 16
this year. The seasons primary symbol is
a menorah, a nine-branched candelabrum
that represents a miracle in which a one-day
supply of pure oil burned for eight days after
Jewish rebels -- the Maccabees -- liberated
the temple from Greek oppressors.
Part of the puzzle, of course, is that this
relatively minor Jewish holiday is aligned
with Christmas during The Holidays, an
explosion of secular marketing and festivities that dominate American life this time of
year. Many Jews avoid Christmas altogether, striving to focus on Hanukkah traditions.

Some keep the seasons gift-giving modest,

to avoid appearances of turning Hanukkah
into a Jewish Christmas.
However, many Jews -- especially in
interfaith homes -- have made their peace
with Christmas, while exploring the line
between the sacred and secular. Is a green
tree safe, especially when topped with a
six-pointed Star of David? Do snowflakes
and icicles suggest the North Pole and, thus,
Santa Claus?
Holiday cards also inspire a swirling snow globe of emotions for many
Jews, noted Lenore Skenazy, a columnist,
author and reality show host. Most generic
holiday cards dont cry out Victory for the
Maccabees!
So the question is: Does sending a
not-specifically Hanukkah card mean the
sender is buying into Christmas? she asked
in an essay for the Jewish Daily Forward.
Some Jews choose purely wintery blue
and silver cards -- avoiding red and green
-- seeking a look that is neither Santa nor
latke.
But some people question all those winter symbols, too. Snowmen, believe it
or not, turn out to be a minefield all their
own, she noted. One friend she contacted
stressed, No trees, wreaths or snowmen
for me! ... By trees, she meant Christmas

trees. Ditto, Christmas wreaths. But snowmen? Big, smiling balls of snow? Those are
taboo?
Are reindeer safe? How about polar
bears? When one of his sons begged for
one of the hip Elf on the Shelf plush toys,
Hoffman responded by creating a Mensch
on a Bench alternative. This toy is now
sold nationwide, with a hardback storybook
explaining its Yiddish roots.
In the age of social media -- especially
zillions of visual Pinterest boards -- all kinds
of secular and religious Jews are sharing tips
on how to create do-it-yourself traditions
that reflect their own unique family trees, he
said. Its hard to imagine a more American
approach to solving the holiday puzzles in
the lives of many modern families.
Were just not accepting whats been
done before and whats out there on the
shelves and thats that, said Hoffman.
Were thinking this through as a family and
coming up with a plan that is meaningful for
us. ... Thats what matters the most. We are
all in this together, as a family.

As usual, too much of it is bad and thats too bad.
There are the fines that were handed out by the National
Football League as a result of Sundays melee involving
the New York GEEE-men and the St. Louis (I still say they

I could write about the wild battle royal after the

There are the cheers that the Carolina Panthers fans

it is both good and bad, in relative terms.
Everyone knows that concussions have become a serious issue, not just in the NFL but trickling down into the
lowest levels of Pop Warner.
Remember a player named Ben Utrecht?
Cincinnati Bengals partisans are among those that
should since he retired from the team in 2009 as part of
an injury settlement.
He is among many former players of more recent vintage that is concerned about what the game has done
and will do to their bodies, especially their brains.
He is part of the former players who have filed suit
against the NFL regarding the issue that is ongoing, as well
as becoming an advocate for research, treatment and care
of former and current players that do and will eventually
need it.
He has also taken to writing and singing songs to his
family for the time when he fears he may not recognize them due to such potential conditions as Alzheimers
disease and the like.
That is sad that he believes this will almost inevitably be the outcome of his time on this mortal coil but
good that he wants them to remember him for what and
whom he truly was.
If you want to learn more I was asked to keep this
short and sweet by my colleagues here at the paper! you
can more about him and his work online.
Merry (belated) Christmas and Happy New Year, everyone!

chance to start for Browns

Associated Press
BEREA Connor Shaw played for his
dad in high school and ran South Carolinas
offense under the ultra-demanding Steve
Spurrier in college. If that wont toughen a
guys skin, nothing will.
Raised in a football family, Shaw
knew when he was 5 years old that
all he ever wanted to do was be an
NFL starting quarterback.
The undrafted rookie may get his
shot on Sunday.
With Johnny Manziel done for the season
with a hamstring injury and Brian Hoyer still
unable to throw because of a sore shoulder
and biceps, Shaw will likely make his starting
debut when the Browns (7-8) conclude another disappointing season this week against the
Baltimore Ravens.
For Shaw, its a dream come true, the
chance to show he belongs.
Im really excited about it, he said. Its
been a long season.
And a long journey for the former
Gamecocks star, who went 27-5 as a starter in
the SEC, but then was invited for just one visit
to an NFL team before Mays draft. He wasnt
selected, but signed in May.
During training camp, he was an outsider in the quarterback battle between Hoyer
and Manziel. But the 6-1, 210-pound Shaw
showed enough during the preseason he
went 8 of 9 for 123 yards and a touchdown
against Washington that the Browns decided to keep him on their practice squad. He
was around in case of emergency and hes
needed.
Shaw doesnt have much time to get ready
for the Ravens, who can still earn a playoff
spot with a win and loss or tie by San Diego,
or with a tie and a San Diego loss. But Browns
coach Mike Pettine believes the 23-year-old
Shaw, who threw 23 touchdown passes and
just one interception as a senior, will produce
even on short notice.
You just look at him and does he pass the
eye-ball test? No, Pettine added. He doesnt
have the strongest arm and hes not the fastest.
Hes not the biggest but he just found a way.
Hes just got something about him.
Thats always been the case for Shaw, who
likened his college game to Manziels. Hes
mobile and can run for a first down when
needed, but dont expect him to flash any
money signs if he scores.
Im a tough, gritty guy, he replied when
asked to describe his playing style. I feel like
Im smart with the ball. Well see. I havent
had a whole lot of reps in the NFL, especially
live reps so well see how it plays out if I suit
up.
Shaw got his first snaps with Clevelands
offense Tuesday and by all accounts showed

hes spent the past few months studying. He

wasnt out of place in the huddle or behind
center.
Although he was out of sight for much of
the season, Shaw worked hard. He was behind
Hoyer and Manziel on the depth chart but
alongside on the ride.
Its been quite a year for Shaw,
who married his high school sweetheart, Molly. They recently welcomed a baby girl, Mila.
And now, his career might take a
step forward, too.
Hopefully we can cap it off with a win,
he added.

DEAR ABBY: Im a grad

student who enjoys perusing
social networks for jokes and

across a post from someone
who said he wanted to kill

freaked out.
I contacted the person to
ask him not to and thankfully
he didnt. Normally I dont do
the whole Internet friend

chatting and since then we
have become fast friends.
Im not sure how to help this
person, though.
He is in the military and
fears losing his job if he
seeks help. I dont want to
pressure him into seeing a
professional, since part of
whats causing his anxiety
is being ordered around
constantly, but I dont want
him to hurt himself. I know I
cant save this person; I can
only walk alongside while he
figures it all out, but I dont
want him to suffer. Please
tell me what to do! -- LONGDISTANCE FRIEND

Too much weight gain in pregnancy

is bad for mom and baby

DEAR DOCTOR K: I am pregnant, and my

doctor says that Im gaining too much weight. I
trust the doctor, but Ive heard that its normal
to gain weight during pregnancy. How much
weight should a woman gain?
DEAR READER: Its natural for a womans
appetite to increase during pregnancy. This is
natures way of making sure that she eats enough
for herself and her growing baby. All women
should gain weight during pregnancy, while
eating healthfully and sensibly. But too much
weight gain isnt good for a woman or her baby.
A woman of average weight should gain
between 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy.
Ideally, a woman should gain 3 to 8 pounds in
the first three months of pregnancy and threequarters to 1 pound a week after that.
Most women of childbearing age who are
moderately active require 2,000-2,200 calories

a day before they

get pregnant. They

only 300 additional
calories per day after
they become pregnant
to achieve their target
weight gain.
If
a
woman
is
underweight
when she becomes
pregnant, her doctor
may encourage her
to gain as much as
40 pounds. A woman
who is overweight when she becomes pregnant
should aim to gain between 15 and 25 pounds.
A good way to get needed nutrition and
calories without gaining too much weight is
to eat healthy snacks during the day. Fruits
and vegetables, and cheese or nuts (in limited

For Better or Worse

Your ability to designate

tasks will be an important facet
of your success this year. There
is only so much you can do on
your own, so put your trust in
people who share your visions
and can facilitate your plans.
If you try to handle everything
yourself, you will miss your
goal.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22Jan. 19) -- You will receive
gifts or money from a surprising
source. An unexpected visitor
will brighten your day and take
your mind off your troubles.
Travel delays can be expected.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb.
19) -- Your generosity and
charity will enable you to do
a good turn for someone less
fortunate than yourself. The
reward you get in return will be
surprising and could influence
your future.

Answers to Wednesdays questions:

Bass Pale Ale still produced today appears in
Edouard Manets famous painting A Bar at the FoliesBergere. The artist signed the work Manet 1852 on one
of the two Bass bottles depicted.
According to comic strip lore, Garfield the cat was born
in the kitchen of Mamma Leonis Italian restaurant, where
he acquired his taste for lasagna, and where he ate so much
he had to be sold for the restaurant to survive.
Todays questions:
What personal tool enabled thrifty tailors and seamstresses of yore to make thread more resilient and less likely
to fray or unravel?
What world-famous opera singer would not go onstage
for a performance until he found a bent nail somewhere
backstage?

The 2014 Relay for Life met its goal with more than $70,000 raised. Eighty-plus survivors took the first
lap on Friday of the event.

Screenings

(Continued from page 1)

We are taking a stand

for freedom, said theater
manager Lee Peterson of
the Cinema Village East in
Manhattan, where most of
Thursdays seven screenings
had sold out by early afternoon. We want to show the
world that Americans will
not be told what we can or
cannot watch. Personally, I
am not afraid.
At Atlantas Plaza Theater,
a sell-out crowd Thursday
hailed the films release,

washing down popcorn with

beer and cocktails and uniting
for a boisterous sing-along of
God Bless America before
the opening credits.
This is way more fun
than it would have been,
said Jim Kelley of Atlanta,
who waited outside with his
daughter, Shannon. The elder
Kelley added, with mocking
sarcasm, This is almost dangerous, like were living life
on the edge.
The back story of The
Interview has itself played
out like a Hollywood sat-

ire, in which a cartoonish

farce distracts from some of
the holiday seasons most
prestigious films: Selma,
the drama about the 1965
civil rights march; Angelina
Jolies adaptation of the bestselling World War II story
Unbroken; and the allstar, big-screen version of
Stephen Sondheims Into
the Woods.
Security was light at many
theaters, with the occasional
police officer on hand. The
possibility of violence was
taken more seriously by the

movie industry than by government officials. Last week,

the Department of Homeland
Security released a statement
saying that there were no
credible threats.
Meanwhile,
Darrell
Foxworth, a special agent for
the FBI in San Diego, said
Wednesday the agency was
sharing information with independent movie theater owners
showing The Interview out
of an abundance of caution
and to educate them about
cyber threats and what help
the FBI can offer.
