The Equations and Effects of Supermoon

Astrologically the Moon governs our emotions and the personal unconscious.
The goddess of the night has a special relationship with the Earth, helping to regulating life. She
is linked to the female menstrual cycle and the reproductive cycles of many other life forms.
The Moon s association with the water element is both symbolic and literal. She governs the
tides and symbolises feminine wisdom.
The Moon does not have light of her own but reflects the light of the Sun. In her ever changing
relationship with the Sun and the Earth she goes through phases, revealing more of herself
during her waxing cycle, then retreating again as she wanes and aligns once more with the Sun
at New Moon.(To know more about Astrology Calendar visit Celestial Insight)

As the Moon orbits the Earth, held in position by gravitational forces, her actual distance from
us fluctuates slightly. This ebb and flow is why she appears to be larger on occasion.
A Supermoon occurs when the Moon is New, or Full, and also making a close approach to the
Earth (Perigee).
The term Supermoon was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle, and it has been adopted by the
astronomical community as well.
New Supermoons are not visible because the Sun and Moon are together in the sky at New
Moon, but Full Supermoons appear much larger than a normal Full Moon. Several Supermoons
happen each year.

This month we have a full Supermoon on August 11. This is the largest Supermoon of 2014.
Interestingly, the August Supermoon falls on the 11th which happens to be a Monday, the day of
the week that is named after the Moon.
Mercury has just reached superior conjunction, so Mercury and the Sun are in opposition to the
Moon. All three planets are squaring Saturn, co-ruler of Aquarius. Saturn is now moving forward
after its recent station.
This fixed T-square involving Sun, Moon, Mercury and Saturn, amplifies all the qualities we
associate with fixity such as; loyalty, passion, determination, intensity, staying power,
thoroughness and resilience. Equally it adds a degree of inflexibility, pig-headedness and
extremism which are some of the negative traits of fixity. Think fixation ; it s easy to become
obsessed by our passions, especially now.
T-square aspects are known to produce tension. In this case it suggests a degree of emotional
tension that may be related to share resources (Scorpio), creative endeavours (Leo), or
community engagement (Aquarius).
It s possible we may get caught up in our own emotions, or embroiled in family issues. Others
may push our buttons, or we may feel compelled to confront others. Fixed signs feel things
deeply, but often hide their emotions. The Moon s close proximity to the Earth suggests
heightened sensitivity.
There are some who view sensitivity as a weakness; however, Supermoons reveal the
importance of honouring our instincts and listening with our heart. Ultimately, this is an
empowering experience. (Except from my 2014 Astrology Calendar)
This Full Moon is a major turning point in our journey through 2014. Falling close to a cross
quarter day (15 degrees fixed signs) we have just passed the midpoint between the June Solstice
and the coming September Equinox.
At each Full Moon activity reaches a peak. This being a Supermoon, and the largest Full Moon of
the year, big projects, major events and emotional responses are likely to take centre stage.
This Supermoon will boost emotional courage, strengthen our resolve and help us confront any
issues of principle, boundaries or responsibilities.
