This document outlines 5 tasks for a Finite Element Method laboratory:
1. Task 1 involves analyzing an axial problem with an initial constraint and applied load, demonstrating comprehension of complex FEM problems.
2. Task 2 requires further investigation of a space frame structure using more elements, with comments on results compared to a previous exercise.
3. Task 3 involves investigating fiber orientation configurations for a composite structure under longitudinal and bending loading to find the best configuration.
4. Task 4 provides a bridge structure and loading conditions, requiring natural frequencies/mode shapes be found and recommendations if the first frequency is unsatisfactory.
5. Task 5 investigates two aluminum fin designs for heat removal, requiring a recommendation on the

In this task students should demonstrate their comprehension in doing analysis of axial problem in complex problem, including initial constraint set in point F. While applying the load at C, at the same time point F is displaced 1 cm and maintained. The illustration of Task 1 is depicted in Figure 2.10.
Figure 2.10: Lab Task-1
2. FEM Laboratory Task 2
Students are requested to do further investigation of the space frame structure in exercise 4 using more elements. At least every structure member shown Figure 3.16 there must be at least 2 elements. Students are also requested to give comments about the results compared with that from exercise 4.
3. FEM Laboratory Task 3
Students are requested to do investigation to find the best fiber orientation configuration of the composite structure with reinforced fiber by employing LISA. The specimen to investigate is similar with that of exercise 6. 1. Find the best configuration for longitudinal loading 2. Find the best configuration for bending loading The configuration of the fiber orientation is listed in Table .4.1
4. FEM Laboratory Task 4
A bridge structure and the loading condition is illustrated in Figure 5.7. All elements have E = 200GPa and the cross section area A = 10 104 m2. The mass density of the material is 8000 kg/m2. As a design engineer you are requested to provide an information in regard the vibration characteristics of the preliminary design of the bridge. 1. Provide the first 5 natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes 2. Since your report is a printed paper, the mode shapes are not only plotted but also described technically so the reader understand the mode of the vibrations without looking at the animation 3. If your client is not satisfied with the first natural frequency and wants to have higher natural frequency of the first mode, what will be your recommendation. Your recommendation must be convincing and based on the data that you have.
5. FEM Laboratory Task 5
As a research engineer in a company you are requested to investigate two types of aluminum fins as illustrated in Figure 6.7 that will be implemented to remove heat from a surface whose temperature is 150 _C. The temperature of surrounding air is 25 _C. The natural heat transfer coefficient associated with the surrounding air is 30W/m2 _C. The thermal conductivity of aluminum is 168W/m_C. Determine which one of the fin that you would suggest. Your report should be concise, attractive and very convincing.
