D. VHF TRANSMITTINGANTENNA (SeeFig. 3)

F.I

The VHF tronsmitting ontenno should be mounted

on q metol plote meosuring ot leost 18 inches
sguore for best results. Such o mounting plote is
often found directly in front of the windshield in
fobric-covered ships, ond ot the center of the cobin
roof in metol ships. Where no such surfoce is ovoiloble, o piece of thin oluminum moy sometimes be
offixed flush with the fobric. This thin oluminum
sheet or foil moy be mode to conform to the vorious curved surfoces to which it is mounted, but oll
cuts ond seoms should be olong lines rodioting
from the center point. A 7/16 inih hole should be
in the center of this sheet for mounting the ontenno. lt is recommended thot where necessory o
metol supporting plote be provided for the ontenno
to resist the bending lood imposed by the slipstreom. Do not lengthen or shorten the ontenno.
It hos been cut the proper length for the most efficient rodiotion ot the frequencies generoted by this
tronsmitter. Do not ottoch other wires or devices
to it, ond locote it ot leost 12 inches from the
neorest projecting object or other wire. The method
of ottoching the tronsmission line to the ontenno
is illustroted in Fig. 3 ond should be rigidly folIowed. txcess tronsmission line con be neotly coiled
ot ony convenient point provided thot ot leost o
six-inch rodius is used in coiling. All bends in the
tronsmission line should be smooth ond groduol, to
prevent possible trouble loter on.

E. MAR,KERBEACONANTENNA
(SeeFig. 5)
The morker beoconontenno, which is not furnished
with the eguipment, should be fobricoted from
suitoble ontenno wire. lt should be locoted under
the fusiloge ond spoced obout six inches owoy
from it by o poir of suitoble support mostS.Noti
that the point where the leod-in is connected is
five inches disploced from the center of the ontenno wire. This dimension is importont for proper
motching.
A shorter (quorter wove) bent-rod, shunt-fed ontenno mounted on the under surfoce of the oirplone hos been found to be sotisfoctory if the feed
point is corefully odiusted for best reception.

improve oscillotor stobility, nor to the third l.F.

by the FUNCTION SWITCH so os to provide ropid
AVC for communicotion purposes (switch set to

The plote circuit of V-302 is brood-bond coupled

to the grid of V-303 possing oll frequencies from
I I B to 123 mc. Low bond (or 121.5to 127 mc.,high

In the ourol chonnel between the detector diode

3.

Vorioble phose 30 cycles BlEo mod.) produced by effectively rototing o limocon ontenno pottern 30 times per second ot the

The reference chonnel output omplifier (V-208)

provides two independent output signols. One of
these is obtoined ocross the cothode resistonce ond
fed through o very high copocity electrolytic copocitor (C-231) to the L-R metering circuit. The plote
output is fed to o differentioting tronsformer which
shifts the phose of this voltoge by 90' with respect
to the grid voltoge. This shifted phose signol is
used to drive the TO-FROM metering circuit.
D-3.

The 3O-cycle vorioble phose component of the

oudio signol is fed through on RC-type,porollel-T,
bond-rejection f ilter tuned to 60 cycles, ond thence
through on RC-type bond-poss filter tuned to 30
c y c l e s ,t o t h e g r i d o f t h e f i r s t v o l t o g e o m p l i f i e r s t o g e
(V-201A). The purpose of the 60-cycle rejection
filter is to prevent 60-cycle components which ore

errors in the reodings ond slow oscillotions of the
indicotors. The 30-cycle bond-poss filter removes
voice frequency ond 9960 subcorrier components
olong with very low frequency fluctuotions, orising
in the VHF propogotion, which would couse the
m e t e r s 't o f l u c t u o t e e r r o t i c o l l y .

The vorioble phose signol is thus o 3O-cyclesine

wove modulotion whose phose ongle relotive to the
3O-cycle FM on the 9960-cycle subcorrier depends
upon the beoring of the oirplone's receiving ontenno to the stotion. The stotion is odjusted so thot
the vorioble phose signol is "in phose" with the
reference phose ot o beoring due mognetic north
(0' mog.) from the stotion.
Thus the oudio signol developed ocross the detector
lood resistor in the receiver contoins the obove three
seporote ond distinct oudio componentswhich ore
mixed together in simple oddition. lt is the purpose of the omni circuits to seporote these components, ond to indicote by meons of o course

VARIABLE PHASE CHANNEL

The output of the first voltoge omplifier stoge

(V-201A) is fed to the input of the phose-splitter
stoge (V-202A) through onother 30-cycle bondposs filter to further remove the undesired components. This tube hos both plote ond cothode resistors, which ore equol in volue, ond thereby
generotes two output voltoges equol in omplitude

The 9960-cycle subcorrier component of the oudio
