Karnatakas capital Bangalore on 1 November 2014 shed its colonial


name to become Bengaluru along with 11 other cities across the state,
renamed in the native Kannada language. The renaming of Indias tech
hub and other cities coincided with Karnatakas 59th formation day.
The state government on 31 October 2014 notified that Bangalore and
11 other cities across the state will be pronounced and spelt in Kannada
from 1 November 2014, following approval by the central government to
rename them in the local language. Other well-known cities like Mysore
will be pronounced and spelt Mysuru, Mangalore as Mangaluru ;
Belgaum as Belagavi ; Bellary as Ballari ; Hubli as Hubballi and
Gulbarga in the states northern region as Kalaburgi. The remaining
five cities Bijapur became Vijayapura ; Chikmagalur
Chikkamagaluru ; Hospet Hosapeta ; Shimoga in Malnad region as
Shivamogga and Tumkur Tumakuru.

CSIR Scientist Venkat Mohan Won Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize

S Venkata Mohan, scientist at the Council of Scientific and Industrial


Research (CSIR) Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT),
Hyderabad has been awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar prize 2014
in Engineering Sciences. His contributions in generating wealth from
waste leading to the establishment of a viable link between waste
remediation, renewable energy and third generation biofuels, has been
recognised.

Rajiv Mehrishi Took Over As New Economic Affairs Secretary


Rajiv Mehrishi took charge as Union Finance Secretary under the Union
Ministry of Finance. He was appointed as Secretary of Economic Affairs
of Finance. Rajiv Mehrishi succeeded Arvind Mayaram who was shifted
to Ministry of Minority Affairs on 30 October 2014. Earlier on 16
October 2014 Arvind Subramaniam joined as the new Chief Economic
Advisor.

Laser Drone Defence System Successfully Tested By China

China has successfully tested a homemade laser defense system


specially targeting small-scale drones flying at low attitude.The machine
is able to shoot down various small aircraft within a two-kilometer
radius and can do so in five seconds after locating its target.

Legendary jazz clarinetist Acker Bilk Died

Acker Bilk, the legendary jazz musician and clarinet player, has died on
2 November in Bath, southwestern England. Born in Pensford in
Somerset in 1929, Bilk tried a number of different careers before
becoming a learned clarinet player. Born as Bernard Stanley Bilk, he
changed his name to Acker after learning to play the clarinet in the
Army. He learned the clarinet as a bored army recruit stationed in
Egypt after World War II. He formed his first band in Bristol after his
demobilisation. Bilk was named as a Member of the Order of the British
Empire (MBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2001 for services to music.

Alok Kumar Takes Over As Central Vigilance Commission Secretary


Senior IAS officer Alok Kumar has taken over as secretary of Central
Vigilance Commission (CVC), countrys top anti-corruption body. Alok
Kumar, a 1984 batch IAS officer of Assam-Meghalaya cadre, has also
been entrusted with additional charge of Joint Secretary (Training)
under the Ministry of Personnel till completion of his tenure or till
posting of his successor. The Appointments Committee of Cabinet
(ACC), headed by the Prime Minister, has also extended central
deputation tenure of Kumar for three months beyond December 13,
2014.

Award

Grand Cordon of the Order of the Paulownia Flowers, after becoming
the first Indian to receive the rare honour. He has been chosen for one

Hasmukh Adhia Is New Financial Services Secretary

Hasmukh Adhia, a 1981 Gujarat cadre IAS officer, has been appointed
as the new Financial Services Secretary by the union government on 3
November. Hasmukh Adhia replaces G S Sandhu, who was transferred
as the new Chairman of National Authority for Chemical Weapon
Convention (NACWC).

Veteran Bollywood Actor Sadashiv Amrapurkar Died


Veteran Bollywood actor Sadashiv Amrapurkar, who essayed villainous
and comic roles with equal ease and gave powerful performances in
Ardh Satya and Sadak, died in Mumbai on 3 November. Sadashiv
Amrapurkar was born as Ganesh Kumar Narwode in Nasik in 1950 and
later in 1974 he adopted the name Sadashiv. He was associated with
Marathi stage before migrating to the world of Hindi and Marathi films.
He received the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role
in 1991 for Sadak the first time the award was instituted.

Mumbai Has Highest Number of Internet Users In India

According to the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and


Indian Market Research Bureau (IMRB) latest study report, Mumbai
has the highest number of Internet users at about 16.4 million in the
country which has over 243 million web users. Delhi was second with
a user base of 12.1 million. The National Capital recorded the fastest
year-on-year growth rate of 50 percent in Internet user base among top
eight cities of the country.

Union Cabinet Approved Dissolution Of Delhi Assembly

The Union Cabinet on 4 November gave its approval to the proposal for
dissolution of the Delhi Assembly. The approval will pave the way for
holding of fresh Election in Delhi. Delhi has been under the Presidents
Rule since February 2014 following the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP
governments resignation after 49 days in office.

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) gave its prestigious


Presidents Award to Hockey India (HI) President Narinder Batra on 4
November at Morocco. The Presidents Awards were presented to
Narinder Batra and Italian Valentina Quaranta for their lengthy and
valuable services to the sports. Narinder Batra was recently included in
the FIH Executive Board at 2014 Ordinary Congress of FIH.

One World Trade Center Opens For Business In New York


One World Trade Center, the 104-storey building at the same spot
where the twin towers of World Trade Centre (WTC) fell down more than
13 years ago, was opened in New York. This building is constructed at
a cost of $3.9 billion and is the tallest building in the United States.

Anita Kapur Appointed As CBDT new Chairperson

Senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Anita Kapur has been
appointed as the new chairperson of the Central Board of Direct Taxes
(CBDT), the apex authority of the income tax department. Kapur, a
1978-batch officer of the income tax cadre, was till now serving as
member (legislation and computerisation and income tax) in the CBDT.
She took over the top charge after her appointment was made by the
government as incumbent CBDT Chairman K.V. Chowdary retired on
31 October 2014.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made his debut among the worlds
most powerful people, ranked 15th on the Forbes list topped by Russian

MS Dhoni Named Captain of ICC ODI Team

Team India captain MS Dhoni has been named as the captain of ICC
ODI Team of the Year 2014. Sri Lankas Angelo Mathews has been
named as the captain of the Test side that also includes two more Sri
Lankans, Kumar Sangakkara and Rangana Herath. Meanwhile, Dhoni
has been selected in the ICC ODI Team of the Year for the eighth time,
while it is the fifth year he has been appointed captain. Other Indian

Indian-American Niraj Antani Becomes Youngest US Lawmaker

Niraj Antani, a 23-year-old Indian-American student was elected to the


Ohio House of Representatives, becoming one of the youngest state
lawmakers in the US. A law student at the University of Dayton, he is
the youngest Ohio State legislature so far. He defeated 62-year-old
Patrick Morris of the Democratic Party. Antani graduated from Ohio
State University in spring last year with a bachelors degree in political
science. He is the second Indian American after Jay Goyal who served
3 terms from 2006 from the 73rd District in the Ohio House.

Scientists Develop Drug To Replace Antibiotics
Scientists have created the first antibiotic-free drug named
Staphefekt to treat bacterial infections in a major development in
combatting drug-resistance. A small patient trial showed that the new
treatment was effective at eradicating the MRSA (Methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus aureus) superbug which is resistant to most antibiotics.
The drug is already available as a cream for skin infections and

researchers hope to create a pill or an injectable version of it in the next
five years.

Indian-origin Politician Named as Labour MP of the Year

Indian-origin British politician Nigel Keith Vaz named as the Labour MP


of the year 2014 for his valuable work for underrepresented, deprived
and minority sections of the country. Keith Vaz is a British Labour Party
politician and has been Member of Parliament for Leicester East since
1987. He is the longest-serving Asian MP and has been the Chairman
of the Home Affairs Select Committee since July 2007.

Indias first automatic freight train AutoLinxSM was on 7 November


flagged-off by Union Rail Minister D.V. Sadanada Gowda at Melpakkam
near Chennai. This train carried around 280 finished cars and left for
Delhi where it would reach in a weeks time. It will arrive at the multimodal logistics park of Container Corporation of India (CCI) at
Khatuwas near Delhi. This train is developed by Delhi-based APL
Logistics Vascor Automotive, a joint venture between APL Logistics and
Vascor. APL Logistics VASCOR Automotive is the first third-party
logistics provider to offer rail-based services under the Automobile
Freight Train Operator (AFTO) license administered by Indian Railways.
With the AFTO licence, logistics service providers can help to facilitate
bulk movement of automotive traffic by rail from the production hubs
to consumer centres, as well as ports for export.

Havells India Chairman Qimat Rai Gupta Died


Electrical equipment maker Havells India group chairman Qimat Rai
Gupta died on 7 November. He was 77. Gupta recently also made it to
the Forbes billionaire list for the first time and was ranked Indias 48th
richest man with a net worth of $ 2 billion as of September 2014. Qimat
Rai Gupta started Havells India Limited in 1971 and transformed it to
a multinational company with operations across 51 countries. Guptas
big moment came in 2007 when Havells acquired Europe headquartered
Sylvania Lighting thus registering Havells amongst top 4 lighting
companies in the world.

Laxmikant Parsekar was sworn-in as the new Chief Minister of Goa on


8 November 2014. Parsekar, who was health minister in the Parrikar
cabinet, was administered oath of office and secrecy by Goa governor
Mridula Sinha at a ceremony in Raj Bhavan. He becomes the coastal
states 11th chief minister.

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has become only the third


player in history to take 10 wickets and score a century in a Test match.
The record was created in the second Test with Zimbabwe which
Bangladesh won by 162 runs. Shakib, who hit 137 in the first innings,
joined Englands Ian Botham and Pakistans Imran Khan to take 10
wickets and score a century in a test. Botham and Imran both
accomplished the feat in 1980 Tests against India.

Arundhati Bhattacharya, the chairperson of State Bank of India (SBI),
has been named as the most powerful woman in business in India by
Fortune magazine. ICICI Banks Chanda Kochhar and Shikha Sharma
of Axis Bank follow Ms Bhattacharya at the second and the third places,
respectively. In the Fortune India list of 50 most powerful
businesswomen, there are as many as eight new entrants. Two first
timers Bhattacharya and Nishi Vasudeva, the chairperson and

Virat Kohli became the quickest cricketer in history to reach 6000 OneDay International run mark, bettering legendary West Indian Vivian
Richards record during his 53-run knock in Indias third ODI against
Sri Lanka on 9 November at Uppal, Hyderabad. Playing in his 144th
match and 136th innings, Kohli began the match 50 short of 6000 and
reached the milestone with a single off left-arm spinner Chaturanga de
Silva in the 39th over at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium at
Uppal. Richards had needed 156 matches and 141 innings to reach the
milestone in 1989. The 26-year-old Indian, who was captaining the
home side, was out for 53 and he has so far scored 6003 runs with the
help of 20 centuries and 32 half centuries. He is the eighth Indian to
have scored 6000 or more runs and 47th overall.

21 New Ministers Inducted Into The Union Cabinet

President Pranab Mukherjee administered the oath of office to 21


Ministers, including four Cabinet Ministers, three Ministers of State
(Independent Charge) and 14 Ministers of State on 9 November. Former
Goa CM Manohar Parrikar, Suresh Prabhu, Birendra Singh and JP
Nadda are the new Cabinet ministers. This takes the strength of the
Union Council of Ministers to 66. It is also the first expansion of the
Union Council of Ministers since the Modi government took office on 26
May 2014. The three ministers of state (independent charge) included
Bandaru Dattatreya, Dr. Mahesh Sharma and Rajiv Pratap Rudy. 14
ministers of state included Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Rajyavardhan
Rathore, Ramshankar Katheria, Vijay Sampla, Babul Supriyo, Ram

India Successfully Test Fires Nuclear Capable Agni-II Missile

India on 9 November successfully test-fired its medium-range nuclearcapable Agni-II missile with a strike range of more than 2000 km from
the Wheeler Island off Odisha coast as part of a user trial by the army.
The two-stage sophisticated missile equipped with advanced high
accuracy navigation system, guided by a novel scheme of state of the
earth command and control system was propelled by solid rocket
propellant system. The 20-metre long Agni-II missile is a two-stage,
solid-propelled ballistic missile. It has a launch weight of 17 tonnes and
can carry a payload of 1000 kg over a distance of more than 2,000 km.

President Pranab Mukherjee on 10 November conferred Jnanpith award


on eminent Hindi poet Kedarnath Singh for his outstanding
contribution towards Indian literature. The Jnanpith award was
institutionalised by philanthropist couple Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain and
Late Rama Jain to recognise and award Indian authors for their
contribution to Indian literature.

Mannan Kumar Mishra and S. Prabakaran Re-elected To BCI


Mannan Kumar Mishra of Bihar and S. Prabakaran from Tamil Nadu
have been unanimously re-elected Chairman and Co-chairman of the
Bar Council of India (BCI). The BCI also elected Bhoje Gowda SL as vicechairman, T.S. Ajith as chairman of the executive committee, and Nilesh
Kumar as the vice-chairman of the executive committee. The officebearers will hold office till April 2016.

Noted Scholar MSS Pandian Died

Noted scholar and JNU professor Mathias Samuel Soundra Pandian,


popularly known as MSS Pandian, died on 10 November in New Delhi.
He was 57. He was working with the School of Social Sciences Centre
for Historical Studies in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). His
publications were many including Brahmin and Non -Brahmin:
Genealogies of the Tamil Political Present and The Image Trap: M G
Ramachandran in Films and Politics. Pandian wrote extensively on the
Dravidian Movement, south Indian politics, cinema, caste, identity and
several other socially relevant issues. Pandian wrote for national
newspapers and for the Economic and Political Weekly for several years
and was known for his incisive articles on Tamil Nadu and Dravidian
politics in particular.

India and Israel successfully test fired long range surface to air missile
jointly developed which also signifies their cooperation in developing
advanced weapon systems. Long Range Surface to Air Missile (LRSAM)
is called Barak 8 missile in Israel. The missile successfully intercepted
a manoeuvring air-breathing target mimicking an attacking combat
aircraft. Long Range Surface to Air Missile (LRSAM) was tested by Israel
Aerospace Industries (IAI) in the presence of DRDO (Defence Research
& Development Organisation) scientists and officials of Indian Army.

Year 2014

Hanumappa Sudarshan of Karuna Trust was named as the winner of


the India Social Entrepereur of the Year award 2014. This award was
announced by Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, a sister
foundation of the World Economic Forum in collaboration with Jubilant

China Unveils Mars Rover After Indias Successful Mangalyaan

China has unveiled its first Mars rover ahead of the 10th China
International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition kicking off in the city
of Zhuhai. The Mars rover has a large dish antenna on its back and is
also equipped with more solid wheels. China International Aviation and
Aerospace Exhibition, also known as Airshow China, is an international
aerospace trade show that has been held in Zhuhai every year from
1996. The exhibition sees the showcasing of life-size products,
technological exchange and serves as a platform for trade talks. In 2014,
the expo will take place from 11 to 16 November 2014.

Legendary Mahabharat Director Ravi Chopra Died

Legendary filmmaker and director of popular television serial


Mahabharat, Ravi Chopra died at the age of 68 years on 12 November
in Mumbai. He started his career assisting his father B R Chopra in
films like, Dastaan (1972) and Dhund (1973). He also assisted his uncle
Yash Chopra in Ittefaq (1969). He made his independent directorial
debut with Zameer (1975), produced under the family banner, B.R.
Films. He was also the first Bollywood filmmaker who was taken to the
court by a Hollywood company over the remaking of a film. In 2009,
20th Century Fox had served a legal notice to Ravi Chopra and his
production company B R Films over remaking of the 1992 Oscar Award
winning comedy film My Cousin Vinny into Bollywood film Banda Ye
Bindaas Hai. Fox sought 1.4 million US dollars in damages.

Pakistan Successfully Test Fires Hatf-VI Ballistic Missile

Pakistan on 13 November conducted a successful training launch of


intermediate range Shaheen-II (Hatf-VI) ballistic missile. The successful
launch was the culminating point of the Field Training Exercise of Army
Strategic Forces Command. Shaheen-II Missile is capable of carrying
nuclear and conventional warheads to a range of 1500 kilometres.

was 61. Chandrasekhar P Sant, a former sports editor of Maharashtra
Times, was a long-time treasurer of the Sports Journalists Federation

to witness Kapil Devs team winning the coveted World Cup in England
in 1983. He was a well-known commentator in Marathi and was

trial by the Air Force. The sophisticated Akash missile was test-fired

system with a strike range of 25 km and can carry a warhead of 60 kg.

Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes has died on 27 November at the age


of 25 after being struck on the head by a bouncer at the Sydney Cricket
Ground on 25 November 2014. He was a left-handed opening batsman
who played for two seasons with New South Wales before making his
Test debut in 2009 at the age of 20. On 11 January 2013, Hughes
became the first Australian batsman in the history of ODI cricket to
score a century on debut, a feat which he achieved against Sri Lanka in
Melbourne. Hughes was also the youngest cricketer ever to score backto-back centuries in a test match, a feat which he achieved in Durban,
2009 against South Africa.

Prize

Lahore-based author Bilal Tanweer has won the 2014 Shakti Bhatt First
Book Prize for his novel The Scatter Here Is Too Great. In its seventh
year, the prize money has been increased to Rs 2 lakh with support from
Priti Paul and the Apeejay Trust.

The first 3D-printed object was developed in space by worlds first zerogravity 3D printer created by NASA and Made In Space Inc on the
International Space Station (ISS). The 3D maker zero-g printer was
delivered to the ISS in september 2014 via a Space X Dragon capsule.
NASA astronaut Barry Butch Wilmore, Expedition 42 commander
installed the printer at the ISS and conducted the first calibration test
print.

Parliament on 28 November 2014 approved a labour law that redefines


small factories and frees small companies from furnishing separate
labour returns. The Labour Laws (Exemption from Furnishing Returns
and Maintaining Registers by Certain Establishments) Amendment Bill,
2011, was approved by Lok Sabha on 28 November 2014. On 25
November 2014, Rajya Sabha had approved the draft law after a
discussion on black money. With this, a company employing between
10 and 40 workers will be called a small establishment. Earlier a small
establishment was one with 10-19 employees.

Iconic Mexican Comedian Chespirito Died


Mexican comedian Roberto Gomez Bolanos, better known as Chespirito,
was died on 28 November. He was 85. Gomez Bolanos wrote and played
the boy television character El Chavo del Ocho (The Boy from the Eight)

Bolanos was the person who changed comedy in Latin America. Born
on 21 February 1929 was trained as an engineer. He achieved smashing
success in 1970 with the creation of Chespirito, a television show that

Colorado). In 1971, he wrote and acted as El Chavo del Ocho, a
reference to the channel that broadcast the show. In career that started
in the 1950s, he wrote hundreds of television episodes, 20 films and
theater productions that drew record-breaking audiences.

in Gujarat. Sulak Sivaraksa, founder, International Network of Engaged
Buddhists (INEB) Thailand, is the international recipient of the award
for propounding Gandhian values. The awards for recognition in the
field of Constructive Work and Application of Science and Technology
for Rural Development were instituted in 1978. The award for the
Development and Welfare of Women and Children was introduced in
1980 in the memory of Jankidevi Bajaj, wife of Jamnalal Bajaj.The
International Award was instituted in 1988 in commemoration of the
birth centenary of Jamnalal Bajaj.

Jhumpa Lahiri, Shamsur Rahman Faruqi In DSC Prize Shortlist


Indian writer critic Shamsur Rahman Faruqi and Indian-American
author Jhumpa Lahiri are among five authors shortlisted for next years
USD 50,000 DSC Prize for South Asian Literature. The shortlist for 2015
was announced in London. Lahiris novel The Lowland, an intimate
portrayal of two brothers and political passion was earlier on the 2013
Man Booker Prize shortlist as well. Her debut short story collection,
Interpreter of Maladies had won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
Poet, novelist and literary critic Faruqi has been shortlisted for his novel
The Mirror of Beauty which he translated from Urdu and deals with

Biomedical Engineering at SRM University, and his Project Instructor
Dr. Shafee Hadi of Harvard Medical School have won the Bright Futures
Prize 2014 for their research on fighting HIV/AIDS using a low cost
flexible microchip. The Bright Futures Prize is a prestigious award with
a cash prize of $100,000 for which more than 200 teams from Harvard
and MIT affiliates had competed.

Russian film Leviathan won the prestigious Golden Peacock Award for
the best film while Marathi movie Ek Hazarachi Note won the Centenary
award at the 45th International Film Festival Of India, which concluded
in Goa on 30 November. Srihari Sathe, director of Ek Hazarachi Note,
received the award on behalf of the team. Ek Hazarachi Note also
bagged the Special Jury Award. Best female actor award went to Alina
Rodriguez for Behavior and Sarit Larry for The Kindergarten Teacher.
Leviathan star Alexis Serebryakov shared the best actor award with
Dulal Sarkar of Chotoder Chobi. The award for best director went to
