Change Is gOOd
ne of the great things about Apple is that it never stops working to make
things better. Sure, you might be happy with how everything works on your
Mac or iOS device, but Apple is never contentthe folks in Cupertino are
continuously improving upon the status quo, making changes and advancements,
bringing in new functionality, fixing problems, and more, especially where its operating
systems are concerned.
The upside to such a practice is obvious: suddenly, youve got a whole new set of features
on your hardware, allowing you do new things you couldnt before. Whether were talking

system as a burden
convenient in every update to iOS and Mac OS X
and you can usually enjoy such benefits for free, without investing in new hardware.
The downside, of course, is that its often hard to learn about something new,
especially if youve spent years growing accustomed to previous operating systems.
Things move, things change, and sometimes options that weve relied on get
completely removed (hey, Apples good, but nobody says its perfect). Plus, it can be
tricky to learn how to take advantage of brand-new features.
Luckily, thats where this special issue of Mac|Life comes in. Although its been a few
months since iOS 7 and Mac OS X Mavericks were released to the public, users still have
plenty of questions about all the changes in Apples latest operating systems, which is why
weve collected more than 180 tips from the pages of Mac|Life and compiled them into
one convenient volume. If youre just getting your feet wet with Mavericks and iOS 7, these
pointers will get you up to speed, and even if youve been using the new operating systems
for a while, were here to make sure theres nothing youve overlooked.
So theres no reason to think of mastering a new operating system as a burden; think of
it as a way to get the chance to do things with your electronics that were never previously
possible. Apples quest for innovation means that we never stop learning how to get the
most from our hardware, and that something fresh and exciting is only an OS update away.

Settings
New features in System Preferences let users more easily view and manage their Bluetooth devices, sign into their LinkedIn accounts,
and create text replacement for certain strings when typed into text areas.
Text Replacement
Navigate to System Preferences > Keyboard >
Text, and you will find a new text-substitution
feature that lets you easily specify any text to be
replaced, and what to replace the text with. This
works similarly to other text-substitution tools
available as third-party applications on the Mac.
LinkedIn Accounts
New to the Accounts System Preference pane is the ability to sign into
a LinkedIn account. Doing this will allow your LinkedIn connections to
show up in the Contacts application, give you the ability to share links to
LinkedIn across the system (including Safari), and also allow other thirdparty apps the ability to integrate with your LinkedIn account.

iBooks
With mavericks, iBooks makes its debut on the mac. Now, you can purchase and read both standard and interactive iBooks right from
your mac without any ios device required. iBooks purchased on your mac will sync between your other mac and ios devices with
itunes in the cloud purchases with ease.
Purchasing iBooks
iBooks has finally come to the mac. in
addition to viewing your purchased iBooks,
you can also buy new books right from your
mac and have them sync between your ios
devices. simply open the new iBooks app
and select the iBooks store button in the
upper-left corner of the window (or press
shift + command + H). peruse the iBooks
store and purchase books with the same
ease as in the itunes store.
Viewing iBooks
To view your existing (or newly purchased) iBooks, navigate to the Library by pressing Command
+ L. Here, sign in with your Apple ID (do so in Store > Sign In). After you do, all of your existing
iBooks that you have purchased will be shown in this Library view. To view a book from your existing
library, double-click on it in this library view. If the iBook has an iCloud icon, then it will automatically
download. (Note that you may be
required to authorize your computer
to view these books; standard iTunes
authorization applies, so only five
machines can be authorized at any
given time to view content.)

Creating iBook Notes
All of the conveniences of iBooks on iOS are now available right on your Mac. One of
these conveniences is the ability to add notes to your iBooks as you read them. To do
this, select a portion of text and select Add Note in the popup that
appears after selecting some text. This will automatically highlight the
selected text and give you a sticky to begin typing your notes. Press
Command + 4 to open the Notes panel to quickly view all highlights
and notes.

Finder
originally introduced 30 years ago, the Finder has been the heart of the mac os through many releases. With mavericks, apple is
implementing some much-requested features such as the ability to use Finder in full-screen mode, and the introduction of tabs and tags.
Tabs
Ever since the introduction of tabbed browsing in Safari, Mac users have been requesting the same
functionality for the Finder. Apple has finally listened, and has implemented the ability to browse your
files with tabs. Doing so acts exactly like Safari. Press Command + T to open a new tab from your current
location. New
tabs will open
with the same
view that youve
selected in Finder
> Preferences >
General under the
option for New
Finder windows
show.
Full-Screen Finder
since Lion, full-screen apps have
been a staple of os x, but the Finder
has never received this functionality.
that is, until now. With mavericks,
clicking on the full-screen button
in the Finders top-right corner will
bring the file browser full screen. this
full-screen mode is especially helpful
when dealing with file renaming or
photo browsing.

Notifications
From interactive notifications to web notifications to being able to turn on Do Not Disturb mode,
Notification center for os x has been greatly improved since its introduction in os x mountain Lion.
Website Notifications
in mountain Lion, apple introduced Notification center for the mac and
announced that safari would support notifications from websites. Now, website
notifications can be delivered without users having to be on the website that
is sending the notification. You can manage these web notifications in safari >
preferences > Notifications.
Delaying Updates
instead of the usual mac app store Updates available
notification that appeared in mountain Lion, youll now have
the ability to delay updates if a restart is required for
an update. You can now choose to either perform a
restart immediately, or choose an option like try in
an Hour, try tonight, or remind me tomorrow.

Maps
mapping on the mac has always been primarily spearheaded by Google maps in the web browser, but now apple is moving its own
mapping system to the mac, allowing users to get directions, view flyovers, and more, right from a single app. But mapping in
mavericks goes deeper than that, and integrates into the majority of built-in apps.
View Bookmarks
to view Bookmarks, click the Bookmark icon in the toolbar
(located to the left of the search bar by default). Here, you
can search through your bookmarks, see recent places, and
also view contacts via icloud. if you have an ios device with
icloud turned on, then all of your recents will be synced
between devices.
View Traffic
maps for os x mavericks also includes the ability to view
traffic details right from your mac, giving you important
information before you ever leave. to do this, open the
maps app and select view > show traffic. Now, whenever
your map-viewing area has traffic alerts, you will see them
listed on the map.

Viewing Local
Search Results
When searching for a local
point of interest, you can click
the pin that was dropped for
the location, then press the
Info button for the pin. You
will get a popup that lists
the information for the POI,
along with the ability to view
reviews and photos (from
Yelp if available).
Mapping Contacts
In the Contacts app, you can now hover over an
address to get a Show Map button. Clicking
this button will open the Maps application
directly to the address that you selected.
Getting Directions
Select the directions button in the default toolbar or press
Command + R to view the directions view.
In this view, you can specify a starting
and end location, and the mode of
transportation. (Currently the Maps app
supports driving and walking directions.)
You can print these directions by pressing
Command + P (or File > Print).

Safari
safari is a browsing experience that focuses on the content and what you can do with it. safari for mavericks is no different, allowing
you to store credit cards for easy checkout on online stores, providing the ability to view your shared links from social networks like
twitter, and allowing you to tweak how web plugins work on a per-site basis.
Safari Sidebar
the safari sidebar is a new section that houses both
Bookmarks and the safari reading List. to get to it, select the
Bookmark button in the Bookmarks Bar, or press command +
shift + L. in this section, you now have access to reading List
articles and Bookmarks from one place.
Shared Links
if you have signed into your twitter account in
system preferences > accounts, then you will
now have access to a new feature called shared
Links in the safari sidebar. this sidebar item
will aggregate all of the recent links from your
twitter stream and list them here, ready for
clicking and browsing.

Bonjour Bookmarks and Favorites
Bonjour is Apples local network service that allows software on different devices to
communicate easily over Wi-Fi or wired LAN. Apple has long built Bonjour into Safari for
sharing bookmarks with other Macs on your network, but you now have the option to turn
off this feature in Safari > Preferences > Advanced. Uncheck the options Include Bonjour
in the Bookmarks menu and
Include Bonjour in the Favorites
bar to prevent these shared
bookmarks from appearing.

Keychain Access
the security of your saved passwords in os x falls to the keychain access technology. With mavericks, apple can now sync your
keychain with icloud, which distributes your saved passwords and credit cards to all of your icloud-connected devices. this is great if
you dont already have a password-syncing tool like 1password.
Keychain Sync
icloud keychain is a new feature that allows your os x and ios
keychains to stay in sync, letting you autofill your passwords no
matter which device youre using. to use this new feature, youll
need to head to system
preferences > icloud, and
check the box for the
service keychain. if
you didnt set up icloud
keychain in the mavericks
setup assistant, then
youll be walked through
preparation steps so your
icloud account is more
secure for keychain access.
Generating Passwords
safari is the first app to include a new keychain feature
that automatically generates a secure password
for you to use. Youll need to have icloud keychain
and autofill enabled for this to work properly. When
visiting a website to sign up for a new account
or change your password, clicking inside of the
password field will automatically present you with a
safari-generated password, ready for your use.

Tags
In OS X Tiger, Apple revolutionized the way we store our files on the Mac with Spotlight: we could store files anywhere, and with
a few clicks, could find them again. With tags in Mavericks, Apple is revolutionizing file storage again. Users can now tag files and
folders for easy search and retrieval.
Tagging Items in
the Finder
Tags are a touted feature
of Mavericks, allowing
you to tag nearly any
file across OS X for
later reference. Tagging
existing items in the
Finder is fairly easy.
Simply right-click an
item (or use the Get Info
panel) and select Tags.
In this popup, you can see
existing tags or type in
a new one to assign that
tag to the file in question.
Searching by Tags
Tags are pretty useless unless you can do things with them. One major use of
tags is searching for files containing certain tags later. To do this, open a new
Finder window and search for the tag name. In the search filter that appears,
select your tag name under the Tags heading. This will filter the results to only
files containing that tag.

Performance
With each iteration of OS X, Apple likes to squeeze as much performance out of its machines as possible through software tweaks
and performance boosts. Mavericks does not disappoint in this area. After installing, youll notice the OS is now snappier and has a
huge boost in battery performance. But Apple didnt stop there.
App Nap
App Nap is a new behind-the-scenes technology that aims to help improve your battery power
performance on your Mac laptop. It does this by sensing windows that are behind others, and
automatically slowing down the app until it switches
back into main focus. One such example is iTunes,
which will preserve power consumption by stopping
irrelevant tasks (such as playing videos) when its
window is not visible.
Compressed Memory
If you pay attention to the Activity Monitor
in Mavericks, you will notice that not only is
performance faster, but memory management is
better, as well. This is thanks to the compressed
memory technology that is built into the OS. As
more and more apps begin to run, and physical
memory becomes utilized more and more, the OS
will automatically free up memory space as you
begin to need it. Inactive (or hidden) applications
will automatically have their memory compressed,
making even more memory available for the frontmost applications.
iTunes Playback
Apple has greatly improved video playback in the version of iTunes that ships with Mavericks. Playing back videos in high
definition now utilizes 35 percent less CPU usage. You can fire up a video on battery power without worrying about the
instant energy drain.

Multiple Displays
Lets face itmultiple displays on the Mac have been less than lackluster in previous OS versions. Apple is hoping to make it better
with Mavericks, however, and we think theyve finally succeeded. From the ability to save window state when connecting/disconnecting
displays to being able to finally handle full-screen apps separately, multiple-display functionality has definitely improved.
Changing Default
Screen for Menu Bar
With Mavericks, Apple has greatly improved
the behavior for connected displays. One such
improvement is the ability to select which external
monitor gets to display the menu bar (the top bar
that usually appears only on your primary display).
To select which display gets this treatment, navigate
to System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement.
In this screen, select which display is the primary
display by dragging the white menu bar between the
displays. New to Mavericks is that the menu bar will
appear on all displays, but will be slightly dimmed on
non-primary displays.

Calendar
Calendar has lost its iconic skeuomorphic stitching and has moved into the new era of Mac and iOS applications, bringing along a cleaner
interface that also implements new features like the ability to view weather, maps, and travel time right from your appointments.
Autocomplete an Address
When adding a new event, youll notice a new dialog
that appears to accept the event information. Under
the event title, youll see a location fieldexcept this
field is different than in any other version of OS X.
When you start typing, it will automatically complete
the address using contact information stored in the
Contacts app. Continue typing the address or select
one of the addresses listed.

OS X Server
Apples Server app can turn any Mavericks installation into a full-blown, fairly powerful server for websites, and nowthanks to Xcode
and software cachefor your local network and Mac/iOS devices.
Xcode Server
Xcode Server is a new component in OS X Server that lets
you connect your copy of Xcode so you can do things like
host a Git repository on your OS X server or run scheduled
builds and automated
testing. To turn on this
service, visit the Server
app > Xcode, and slide
the switch to On. Youll
be required to select
the latest version of
Xcode (requires Xcode
5 or later).
Caching Server
Caching Server 2 in OS X Mavericks Server includes new
features that let you download and deliver software updates
through the Mac App Store and the iTunes Store for faster
downloading on connected devices. To
enable these features, open the Server
app and select the Caching service in
the sidebar. From here, you can turn
on the service, learn more about how
it works, and set the size limits for the
network cache.

Accessibility
Not forgetting users with various abilities, Apple has improved the accessibility features in OS X. New privacy options, system-wide
captions that can be customized, and the ability to control the entire Mac with a single button can make for a better experience overall.
Captions
System-wide subtitles is a new feature that lets you easily set
the style for subtitles and captions used by applications such
as iTunes, DVD player, QuickTime, and others that support
captions. Select a built-in caption style in System Preferences
> Accessibility > Captions, or create
your own by clicking on the plus
button in the list of caption styles.
Switch Control
Switch Control is a new feature of OS X accessibility that
give users with motor-control issues the ability to fully utilize
all aspects of the computer. Turning on Switch Control in
System Preferences > Accessibility > Switch Control will display
crosshairs on the screen that let you do things like select
buttons or use the keyboard by pressing only a single button (or
switch) attached to the computer.

and installing or updating apps is no exception.
Instead of the little blue loading bar, a white,

youll even get to see Jony Ives icon grid.
Expanding Files
If you have a lot of apps, you have a lot of folders, but in iOS 7, you wont
have to fill quite so many of them. Apple still doesnt allow nested folders,
but it has lifted the absurd 12- and 16-app
limits, letting you fill them with apps to

7. Three age ranges5 and under, 68,

their audience, and one-stop shopping will
help parents quickly find apps to calm their
restless little ones.
Easy Money
Weve been able to use the iSight camera
on our Macs to redeem gift cards since last
years release of iTunes 11, but it always
seemed to make a lot more sense as an iOS
feature. Now, it is one. Just hold up your
iPhones camera to the code and youll save
about 45 seconds of aggravation.

Bigger Is Better
We were previously able to increase
the size of the text in Calendar,
Contacts, Mail, Messages, and Notes,
but a new dynamic-type option
will let other apps support resized
text, too. Just drag the slider and
give your eyes a rest. Its located in
Settings > General > Accessibility.

Do Not Call
Youll still have to contact
your carrier with any serious
concerns, but Apple has given
you the ability to block any
number in iOS 7. Just check
the info of any of your recent
calls or contacts, then scroll to
the bottom of the page and tap
Block this caller. Of course,
by block, we really mean send
straight to voicemail, but we
could definitely see how it might
come in handy.

Dyna-mite
Animations are big in iOS 7, so it
only makes sense that Apple has
added a little movement via dynamic
backgrounds. Access them by going into
Wallpapers & Brightness, then selecting
either your lock screen or your home
screen, then tap the Dynamic set.
There are just a few 5c-inspired shades
of floating bubbles to choose from at
present, but were hoping that Apple
gives us more in future updates.

Stop Motion
If youre prone to motion sickness,
Apples parallax wallpapers and
interface animations might make
you a little queasy. Hidden in the
Accessibility settings is a way to turn
off all that constant movement and
help your eyes focus a bit better.
Block Party
If your long-distance significant other is hitting you up on FaceTime around the clock,
iOS 7 understands just how awkward it can be to explain why you declined their call.
If you need a little alone time, Apple lets you block any FaceTime caller, too, so the
person on the other end will just think theres a connection problem.

Photos/Camera
Apple has added a ton of features for amateur photographers in iOS 7,
especially ones who like square photos and preset filters
Stay Focused
If youre taking pictures in landscape mode, focusing can be a bit of pain,
requiring some hand gymnastics if you want to keep your finger on the shutter.
In iOS 7, Apple has incorporated auto focus into the volume up button. Just
hold it down for a second and your picture will sharpen before it snaps.
Live Filters
The Camera app looks a whole lot
different, but it mostly does the same
stuff, save for two additions: a square
option and nine live filters. Were no
longer impressed with sepia-toned
photos, but its about time.

but iOS 7 takes it to a whole new level
Set Boundaries

If youre constantly texting and

any iPhone users nearby who can
accept your delivery. But dont overdo

Now, you can forward images with

Pandora radio
$4.99, Universal
Free, Universal
iTunes Match has put our entire music library at our fingertips,
but no one says we have to use Music to listen to it. Weve
tested more music players over the years than we can count,
but we keep coming
back to CarTunes. it
may be built with your
dashboard in mind, but its
gesture-based interface
is perfect in any setting,
with big, bold album art
and intuitive controls
that make Music seem
downright complicated:
tap to play/pause, slide to
change tracks and swipe
up to access your albums,
playlists, and podcasts.
and if youre listening
to something you have
to share with your
followers? Just swipe
down to tweet it out.
it might not be the newest kid on the block, but Pandora is still the
streaming service to beat. it costs a bit more than iTunes radio to
get rid of the ads, and you cant add your own songs like you can
with Google Play Music,
but neither service can
craft a radio station thats
as perfectly personalized
as Pandoras. Using an
uncanny algorithm that
considers hundreds of
musical attributes to create
a playlist based solely on
your likes and dislikes, it
rarely repeats songs and
never bothers us with
tunes we dont want. and
if eminem radio gets too
predictable, you can always
turn on station shuffle.
When it comes to streaming
music, Pandora sets the
standard.

only the most current
episodes are available

your tastes by studying
what you listen to,
making for the coolest

the planet. and if you
dont like whats on the
air, a simple swipe will
move on to something

hopefully).

We love Real Racing 3 (despite those repair timers), but its playit-safe, simulation-style approach can lose its shine after a while.
For something more raucous, dont miss the amazing asphalt 8:
airborne, which is the arcade-style series best entry by a wide
margin. Youll zip through an array of locales using licensed
supercars, with each gorgeous track punctuated by ramps that
often lead to massive, death-defying air. Gameloft recently axed

those seeking a serious challenge on the go, impossible Road
is one of the best games around. Tasked with guiding a rolling

keep it on the twisting course, all while passing through gates
to slowly advance your score. Falling off isnt necessarily the
end, though, as youll have a few brief moments to get back on
trackbut thats tough. setting a triple-digit score truly feels

With Keychain set up, the first time you log into a website from
one of your devices, it asks whether you want it to record your
details. This isnt compulsory, and you might refuse for sites that
contain sensitive data. However, if you allow details to be stored,
theyre synced to iCloud Keychain. From there, theyre sent to
your other devices, saving you the hassle of having to type them
