BASIC COMPUTER OPERATIONS
Objectives:
-

To aware the teacher trainees about the basic computer operations


To develop the ability among the teacher trainees to identify the
components and devices used with the computers.
To develop the ability among the teacher trainees to use and apply the
computers and its devices.

Unit-1: Awareness to computers and Information Technology


- History and developments in computers
- Computer system concept and Characteristics
- Types of computers: analog, digital, hybrid, micro, mini, mainframe and super
- Capabilities and limitations of different types computers
- PCs- types and characteristics: desktop, Laptop, Notebooks, Palmtop and
workstations
- Software and Hardware concept
- Use of computers in Educational setup
Unit-2: Awareness, Identification of basic computer components and their
Applications
- Configuration system of computers
- Control Units- ALU, Processors, Motherboard
- Memory- RAM, ROM, EPROM, PROM
- Input Output devices, its functions and Characteristics- Input Devices
(Keyboards, Mouse, Trackball, Joystick, Scanners, Digital Camera,
Microphone, OCR, OMR, Voice Recognition, Pen Drive, Touch Screen)
Out put Devices Different types of Monitors, Video Standards (VGA, SVGA,
XGA, LCD), Printers (DOT, MATRIX, LASER, INKJET), Sound cards and
Speakers, Storage Devices (HDD, FDD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD, FLASH
DRIVE)
- Structural and Functional Adaptations in computers for the persons with
disabilities
Unit-3: Different types of Computer Software
- Operating System-WINDOWS, MACINTOSH, LINUX
- Applications- Word Processor, spreadsheets, database management software,
Multimedia development software (Internet)
- Use Accessibility and adaptations of application systems in Special Education
- Educational and recreational use of computer software for children with
disabilities

Unit-4: Basic Application of different Software/Hardware for Persons with Special


Needs (HI/VI/MR/LND)
- Children with Hearing Impairment
- VAGHMI, VOCAL-II, SSL, Hearing Screening and assessment tools
- Hearing aid prescriptions tools and software and Speech Synthesizing
software
- Other types of software and tools used for the children with hearing
impairment.
- Children with Visual Impairment
- JAWS, MONTY, TEXT READERS, BRAILLER, MIMic,
- Periferals and different types of Printers (Mountbatten Braillers and
others).
- Children with LNDs
- Desktop Reading Software, Robotic Exoskeleton, Head-Tracking System
(head mouse), Eye tracking System (eye mouse), Foot mouse and Special
Keyborads
- Children with Mental Retardation
- Applications for the recreation (Paint, Drawing, Word Processors etc.)
- Computer Applications used for educational and daily life skill training.
**Note:

In Unit-4 students have to select their subunit title as per their selected
Disability Area. In each software according to the disability area they
have to learn about- Configuration of computers for particular software
- Installation/Un-installation process of that particular software
- Working environment of that particular software
- Advantages/qualities of application/ software in the learning process of
the children with particular Disability
