TOPIC: Retrieving System Log Files

There are two types of Omneon system log files that can be used to troubleshoot issues:

MediaDirector syslogs, which are stored within the File System.

System Manager pclogs, which are stored on the System Manager PC.

Collecting MediaDirector syslogs

To obtain the MediaDirector syslogs, a connection to the file system is required. There are
several methods available to access the file system, using the Monitor.exe program to open a
Samba connection to the file system, mapping a network drive, or using a UNC path via the
System Manager.

Accessing FS thru the Monitor.exe

1. Start the Monitor.exe program located on the System Manager PC.
2. Locate the View dropdown menu and select the Serial Number List option.
(Figure 1)

3. From the Serial Number List, select a MediaDirector Host and click the Receiver
button. (Figure 2)

4. When the Receiver window is active, press the ALT-E keys at the same time, this
will open a Samba connection to the file system. (Figure 3)

5. Open up the file system and go to the following directory \FS\omDTSSSSS\logs.
(Figure 4)

Where:
FS is the Name of the File System
T is the MediaDirector Type (2 is for MCP-2101-two hosts, 3 is
for MCP-2100-one host)
SSSSS is the MediaDirectors Serial Number (all MediaDirectors
on the same Fiber Channel/File System will be listed in the FS
directory.

6. Copy the specific log files that are needed to the System Manager desktop (or
Temp directory). Once these are copied, compile all logs into a zip file and email them to Omneon Support at support@omneon.com.

The syslog file format is as follows:

syslog_DT_SSSSSFS_YYYY_MM_DD_hh_mm_ss.log

Where:
T is the MediaDirector Type(as listed above)
SSSSS is the MediaDirectors Serial Number(as listed above)
YYYY_MM_DD is the Year/Month/Day when the file was created
hh_mm_ss is the Hour/Minute/Second when the file was created

The modified date listing on the file indicates the last time the log was written to.

Accessing FS thru a Mapped Network Drive

A network drive can be mapped to the file system, so that there is a direct connection to the logs
directory. To do this on the System Manager, follow the normal Microsoft procedure for mapping
a network drive, using the following example: \\MediaDirector\FS\omDTSSSSS\logs

Where:
MediaDirector is the MediaDirectors name or IP address
FS is the Name of the File System
T is the MediaDirector Type (2 is for MCP-2101-two hosts, 3 is for MCP2100-one host)
SSSSS is the MediaDirectors Serial Number (all MediaDirectors on the
same Fiber Channel/File System will be listed in the FS directory.

Accessing FS using the UNC path

To use the UNC path to navigate to the logs directory, use the following steps:
1. On the System Manager PC, click the Start button and select the Run option
2. Type in the UNC path to the file system,
\\MediaDirector\FS\omDTSSSSS\logs. (Figure 5)

Collecting the PCLogs from the System Manager

With respect to pclogs, these must be activated through the monitor.exe application on an active
Receiver window. To activate the Pclogs:
1. Open the Monitor.exe program on the System Manger. From the View dropdown menu,
select Serial Number List
2. Select a MediaDirector Host and click the Receiver button
3. From the active Receiver window, click on the Logging dropdown menu and select the
Logging option. This will now show a (logging) in the window title bar. (Figure 6)

While the Monitor.exe program is running (which is recommended at all times), it will save log
files to the local System Manager PC in the following directory, D:\Omneon\bin\recvData,
(Figure 7) and have two possible formats:
NOTE: With there release of Spectrum v4.6SR2 and higher, the Monitor.exe tool is now part of
the Spectrum installation and not the System manager. Because of this change, the Monitor
program is located in a different location and the logs will now be located in the
D:\Upgrades\omneon.release-4.7_rel\2007.03.05.09.56\pcapps\recvData directory.
(or whatever release past v4.6SR2 you are using.
