Jeremiah Part 2
Well lets pick up the story of jeremiah where we left of in the prev talk.
we are now looking at the msg of jeremiah
And we are looking at the ways in which his mesg was very is similar to that of the prophets.
So, firt he talks about the people of God
How they turned away from God.
When you turn away from god. You turn away from goodness.
And when you loose Him
You loose the good side of life
The bad side comes to the surface
Because we are basically evil even if we know how to do good things
And when God removes His restrain as
Paul puts in Romance 1
When men give God up, God gives men up
When god gives man up
The worst side of him comes to the surface
And the bad things come out in the society
We all know that without the grace of god
We would be much worst than we are
If he hadnt kept his hand on us
And when i read the terrible things that people do reading about it in newspaper
I am reminded that I am capable of evil just like that
Given the right cercumstances, given the right and pressure
There are men and beasts All men can be beasts nor women
If god takes his hands off us
So we have an
People thy giving up on god
So god lket them go
So the worse side come out
The 2nd major thing that he has in common with other prophets
This is bound to lead to disaster
God has got to do with it
He cant allow his people to go on like this
And so he said he is going to bring the babylonians
That those who say that he is bad news really hadnt read him properly
Because whne he looks further into the future, he had a lovely optimism about the ultimate restoration
of his people
I want to read abit to you
I dont often have time to read the bible in this talks
I hope you read the bible before and after these talks
Lets just look first at the new covenant
the time is coming to curse the Lord
Make a new covenant with the house of israel and the house of Juddah
It will not be like the covenant that he made with our forefathers

When i took them by the hand and lead them from egypt because they broke that cove
Though i was a husband to them said the lord
This is the covenant i will make with the house of israel after
Because the lord i will pout
And wwrite it on their hearts
I will be their god
They will be my people
No longer will a man teaches his neighbor or brother saying know the lord
Because thw will all know me
The lord for i will forgive their weakness and remember the thiungs
But many regions stop there
I want to read on
This is what the lord says
He who appoints the sun to shine by day
Who decrees the moon and the stars to shine by niught
Who sees
The lord almighty is his name
Only is this decrese vanish from my sigh t
The decendants of israel
Ever sees the nation before me
Only if the heavens above can be measured and the foundations of the world be sent out
The decendants of israel because of what they have done
He i s guarantreeing that he will keep his side of the covenant
And they will always be in israel
The fact that back in the day is proof that god really keeps his promises
And always be in israel
We think the lord
That is not far from it
The lord willalways be in israel
Because god promiszed them
As long as the sun and the stars are up there
This is the ultimate resto
And some very precious thing
If you read about the previous chapters
Its all about bringing them home again
Rejoicing singing dancing when they come hoem again
David penance
The beginning of may and i have come dancing with 40k p[eople
And they just put babies down under the trees and knowing they will be safe
And then they dance through the streets
Because they are a nation again under good
Very exciting
He promised that he woulkd bring back
It was jerem who said 70 years
Many years later ... that in the excile
And he realized 70 years was nearly up and he was so excited bec jerem said it
And it was true

It was to ensure that we saw that the lkand as it rest that thegeneration would turn back
So they couldn come back, god only promised to bring their children back and those children
Been born in babylon
They have never seen their own land
Chapter 30
I will bring them home
Thats the magic word, home, where you belong
This is where you belong
Hje also promised them a new leader, a new king
He gave them a lot of titles
They called him the good sheperd
The righteous brance
The messianic prince
The shoot from davids tree
The fountain of life
They talked about this coming king and this beautiful terms
And he also promised that thius man would come and would restore the
So that is the ultimate restoration
The fourth and last point tha which he made, that the other prop[hets made
He is pinished
The baby will pun
Al those agaings israel wld be punishe d
God has allowd the baby to take them all
But he promised tha the wld pun them
All of israels enemies god will avenge his people
There is a list of them, egypt, philistines , amon, damascus/ seria, kida, etc, ilan and last of all baby
Jerem promises them one day baby wiull be concurred by another world power
We now know it was gonna be persia
And that conquest baby
But it will be the release of the jews to come back home
Benevolent ruler and he would want to send
Would have been taken tha baby
From whereever to go back home
Interesting policy
Jerem. Doesnt tell us this but we find ir from other books
Cirus have been concurred by baby
Humanitarian ruler
All of you have been taken from your home could go home
That is that wehen you get home
Be sure to build a temple to your goid in which you cld pray for me
And he said that to many captive people
That the jews had this autrhority to build the temple
Perhaps he didnt know that all the other nations went back home
And built temples to pagan gods butthat was aries
I want yopu to builkd a temple to pray for me
Over all directions
The jews were able to go back and build the temple

So jerem was a prophet to the nations

And there is a whole section at the end of his book.
Which predicts what will happen to all the nations who attacked isarel
And it is god who will reap that vengeance not israel
The jews therefore, and this is in jerem
Would need to leave baby
They must not stay there whne they
And im afraid the majority did
Only 50k out of the miliion ort so
Actually came home
Jews have stayed in iran and iraq in the very difficult time
But im afraid when you were born in a coutry
You have built business in that country all that
And to repeat what abraham had to do from the same place
And leave it all behind and go to a country you havbe never seen
Its not easy
God told jerem
Im going to come back to it
I want to just look at the shape or structure of the book of jerrem
Just to see how common his message to other prophets
Again i find
To give you all shape
I tell you that jerem is a bit of a tumble
Its nothing chronological
Nonetheless, there is a pattern that you can see and this is the poattern
It is quite simple
There is a prologue
Chapter 1 how he was called by god as a young man he is
And hoqw he was terribly shy and he was afraid of public speaking
And if you are afraid of public speaking called to be a prophet
That is a bit of a problem
And then from chap 2 45 is all about the discimination, desernation of juddah
And he is saying punishment is coming very quickly
Just about
And so it covers the years 67-BC
Which is mainly potry which means
Communicating gods feelings to them
How gods regrets and anger and conflicting emotions
He loves them but he cannot let them get on
Every parents conflict
And he says babylon will destry seria
And will defeat egypt
Because i am afraid the end wekende of juddah where sayingn if we make a treatyu with powerful
egypt they will protect usagainst seria or against babylon and jerem said no baby cant defeat egypt
No he is making treaty with them
We just trust god
So often the jews think that the way to peace is to make a peace pack to the people outside israel
And all true to their testament god said

Thats not the way to get peace

I wondered just how relevant is that to what is happening right now.
Israel has to look to god for peace and it starts making pacts those who are enemies
Jerem says so can we
Just that we
Now thats chap 2 20n
Chap 21 45 is the good news when he looks beyond all that to the ultiomate resto
And when he reaalized it was hopeless that the disaster is going to come
He then gave them the longer term view of the ult resto of the people again
And now its mainly prose , now it mainly sorts the feeling of god
See the difference
When god talks about the situa
Its heart its sym, bolic of his feelings
His simply sharing his intetion in th elong distant future
Would should not so hart and not so emotional
And in th elong term, after babylon has departted juddah
And jeru is devastated nevertheless some will come backj and drebuild it
And the situa
Is not totally lost
Then towards the end of the book chapter 45All about the nations arround israel
God will one day deal with them
The resto of israel will be accompanied by the judgmt of the trouble
Justice as in history
Chap 52 is a kind of about national catas that is breaking jerem people
It is really written in chap 52
When it happened, jerem was taking away to egypt and jerusalem was left and devast
So far, we simpky been lloking at the things thta jrem that all the prophets have said
Things that he said which are quite unique to him
He emphasis draw them talking new things
But they are certain way that other prophets dont say
They are quite uniqueto this phophet jemrem\
First is his emphasis on
